(1) ROMEO MORENO & NOAM DAR vs. THE VANITY PROJECT (Brad Baylor & Ricky Smokes) – Dusty Classic semifinal match
Moreno got bumped to the floor immediately. Dar had his head taped up from an injury suffered at the hands of VP during a live event this weekend, so the baked-in story was that the Vanity Project would be focused on it. Dar took a few bumps but was able to make the tag, and Moreno took over on offense. Breaking news: apparently, next week’s show is on Wednesday (which likely means a non-live post-show for us since our host doesn’t work properly when two shows are attempted at once). The finals will be on that show, so my month-long assumption that the finals would be wrestled on Halloween Havoc because of the perfect timing is out the window. Dar sold on the outside as Moreno checked on him as the match went to split-screen. [c]
Baylor had Moreno downed. In an inset promo, Grayson Waller was filming a selfie video outside of Tony D’Angelo’s house. He said he was going to see if anyone was home. Messing with family is the new NXT way, it would seem. Dar made the hot tag and got a rollup on Smokes for two. He threw kicks at Smokes, and when he covered up, he went with a European uppercut. Dar covered again for two. Moreno tagged in for a double suplex and a cover for two. Moreno set up Smokes on the babyface corner and tagged Dar, but Smokes raked the now-exposed injured forehead and ran for the tag. Baylor ran himself right into an armbar for two. Somewhere I missed some blood, because the ref had his gloves on. VP slowed it down and double-teamed but Moreno neutralized the illegal man, allowing Dar to catch Baylor in an ankle-lock.
Everyone got involved for a mess of activity for about thirty seconds, ending in a jawbreaker by Baylor on Dar. VP set up an assisted spike piledriver for a long two, broken up by Moreno. All four ended up in the ring again, but Moreno and Baylor bumped to the floor, where Moreno hit a suplex on the mat outside. Dar caught Smokes in a leg submission and they rolled outside. Myka Lockwood tried to get involved but couldn’t convert. Both men tagged. Moreno hit a missile dropkick, then took Baylor up in a corner. He hit a cutter from above as Dar hit one on Smokes inside the ring also.
VP double-teamed on offense but Moreno countered and Smokes ended up hitting Baylor from above. Dar tagged in and he and Moreno hit high-low to beat the champions and move on to the finals.
WINNERS: Romeo Moreno & Noam Dar at 14:13.
(Wells’s Analysis: Kind of a mess here, as they went for workrate over telling any sort of coherent story, other than the lip service paid to the injury in the first couple of minutes. I know that’s the NXT way, but it doesn’t have to be. I picked Moreno & Dar to win the tournament when the brackets were released, but I can very easily see them losing to a heel Hank & Tank next Wednesday)
-Tony D’Angelo was pacing in Rob Stone’s room and said if Grayson Waller touched his family, he’s “going to kill him.” That wording very rarely, if ever, makes it to WWE TV. Tony stormed out to head home. Not sure why they made it look like he waited to leave until 10 minutes after NXT showed the video, and twenty minutes after it was posted to socials. [c]
-Continuing the story set up last week, Cruz Montana – in a pre-taped segment, said last week he briefly became the man he spent years trying to bury. He said Dion Lennox pulled it out of him, and next week, nobody will be able to stop what he’s going to do. He said nobody should bring his family into things, and now his past will become Dion’s future.
(2) LIZZY RAIN vs. CHANTEL MONROE
Vic got his strained ’80s rock reference out of the way early as he said there’s “always hysteria” when Lizzy heads to the ring. Bizarrely, the debuting Monroe didn’t get a televised entrance. Moore hit a snap mare early and got into her taunts early. She hit anoter one, but Rain quickly escaped and snapped off one of her own. Rain tried a headscissors and Monroe escaped, only for Rain to go for a headlock. After another brief headscissors, they reset.
Rain hit a big boot. Rope run and a shot to the knee, followed by a spinning heel kick by Rain for two. Rain laid in a chop, ducked one, then laid in another. Monroe missed in a corner and Rain hit a step-up kick that showed a ton of light. Production is catching a lot of these bad angles lately. Backslide by Rain got two. Springboard elbow and a fisherman’s suplex by Rain. Monroe rolled to the apron, then hit a neckbreaker over the rope and covered for two. The match went to commercial with no split-screen. [c]
Monroe dominated during the break, obviously. She had Rain downed. She took Rain and put her into the corner head-first a couple of times. Rain charged into a back elbow. Monroe tried another neckbreaker over the rope, but Rain went out with her and spiked her on the apron. Back inside, Rain hit some kicks and missed one, but connected on the rewind. Rain did her “make it rain” chops in the corner. Rain hit a German suplex and a spinebuster. Rain put Monroe up in a fireman’s carry but Monroe escaped. Rain rolled up Monroe for two, but Monroe kept rolling and grabbed a rope for apparent leverage, despite the angle offering none, and got the win.
WINNER: Chantel Monroe at 9:28.
(Wells’s Analysis: This was a pretty good match outside of the poor angle on the one kick. It’s a good start for Monroe and Rain has an out for losing, even if that out is the weird “she was holding a rope” thing that we all agree somehow makes it harder to kick out despite the angle not making a lick of sense)
-In a promoted segment, Izzi Dame presented more old photos and videos of Zaria being normal to say Zaria was hiding her true self, still going for psychological warfare. Zaria hasn’t turned face exactly, but is she de facto babyface -not just for the match, but in general – considering Dame is the clear heel and has gone so far? I guess we’ll have to see what she does next.
(3) SAQUON SHUGARS vs. SEAN LEGACY
This face-face match was built when Legacy questioned Shugars’ focus last week. The early part of the match was rapid-fire with reversals until Legacy put together a few shots and a standing moonsault for two. The match went to commercial with no split-screen just ninety seconds in. [c]
Shugars got back into it and laid out Legacy for two. The two took their time to get back into it. Legacy got in some chops and Shugars managed some kicks. Legacy snuck in a superkick and they sold on the mat. Back to their feet, Legacy got in some ax-handles, and then a step-up kick in a corner. Sliced bread got two. Legacy held a rope to avoid a slam and then hit a springboard bomb for two. Legacy set up Shugars on the mat and went for a 450 but ate knees. Shugars set up Legacy and hit F-12, but Legacy got a foot on the rope to avoid the loss. Vic laid it on thick that Shugars should’ve hooked the leg, keeping up the story that Shugars isn’t focused enough. Legacy hit standing Spanish Fly for the win.
WINNER: Sean Legacy at 10:25.
(Wells’s Analysis: Vic said the frustration is “continuing to build” in Shugars, which is odd because Shugars isn’t exactly stacking up losses, this match notwithstanding. The match never got into a high gear but was an acceptable TV match)
-Tony D’Angelo was shown getting to his house. He got a call from Waller, who was coy about where he was and what he’d done. He never even entered the house, and instead told Waller to stay where he was so he could go beat his ass. Uh…seems like he would’ve at least checked inside.
-Myles Borne and Tavion Heights were walking backstage (separately) ahead of whatever they’re up to this week.
-Another video hyping Agent of Shadows focused on Nikkita Lyons beating up some guy in a courtroom. I sure it’s high art. [c]
