[HOUR ONE]
-They opened with pryo blasting on the stage and a wide shot of the arena crowd as Excalibur introduced the show.
(Keller’s Analysis: As much as the 99 year old venue was cool the last several weeks, it was refreshing to see a regular big crowd in a larger arena setting this week.)
-A promo with MJF aired backstage. He said Hangman Page refuses to give him a title match unless he executes his contract he won. He said Mark Briscoe will pay a big price as a result. He said he will send Briscoe home to be a chicken farmer and “blue collar bitch.” He said Briscoe is “white trash that got lucky.” He said fans cheer him because they pity him. He said his luck will run out tonight.
(Keller’s Analysis: That’s the type of spot-on-subject and to-the-point promo MJF should cut 9 out of 10 times on TV. He was a jerk and arrogant and his delivery was believable. It made viewers want to see Briscoe beat him up.)
-The announcers hyped the line-up including Jon Moxley vs. “Speedball” Mike Bailey.
(1) JON MOXLEY (w/Marina Shafir) vs. “SPEEDBALL” MIKE BAILEY
Schiavone said he was backstage in his usual pre-show production meeting with Tony Khan when Mox broke down the door and demanded a match. He said TK went into the locker room and asked who wanted to face Mox and the first to volunteer was Speedball. The bell rang 6 minutes into the hour.
Speedball went on the attack out of the gate with a barrage of kicks and then punches and chops in the corner. The announcers talked about how Mox was looking around the arena for Darby. Mox took over with an eye rake. Speedball either really had an actual eye issue or was selling it really well afterward. Schiavone said next Mox tried to rip off his left ear.
Speedball checked on his eyes at ringside at 3:00. Shafir swept his leg and knocked him down as Mox distracted the ref. Kevin Knight came out to ringside and had words with Shafir and Mox. Speedball recovered and springboard moonsaulted onto Mox at ringside. (That’s an example of how to dive on someone without it looking like the target is just waiting to catch them.)
Speedball landed a standing shooting star press kneedrop onto Mox’s back on the ringside barricade. That was cool and precise and drew a “Holy shit!” chant. They cut to a split-screen break at 5:00. [c/db]
Mox took over during the break. Speedball made a comeback with a dropkick at 10:00. Fans chanted “Speedball!” Then he landed a running shooting star press for a two count. He followed with a top rope shooting star press next and then applied an armbar. Wheeler Yuta grabbed at Speedball’s boot. Mox took control from that. Darvy Allin then showed up behind Yuta and yanked him over the barricade and to the back. Mox looked for what happened to them. Speedball rolled him up from behind for a two count. He then landed a spinning hook kick for a two count. Speedball applied an armbar mid-ring. Mox countered into a sleeper and then landed a Death Rider for the win.
Mox with Shafir darted to the back to try to find Yuta and Darby.
WINNER: Moxley in 14:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: Good, competitive match that sorta worked better than most long AEW TV matches where you know who’s going to win just be because Bailey had such a fighting spirit about him.)
-Renee Paquette interviewed Toni Storm and Alex Windsor backstage about their matches at Forbidden Door. Storm said, “If there is anything I know about this clearly nonsexual friendship is you can beat us up, but you can’t beat us off.” Windsor winced. Windsor said you can’t give her lick without her giving a lick back. She then said she’s now doing it too. Storm said she’d tango with Athena tonight if she wanted.
-The cameras cut to the parking lot where Shafir and Mox found a bodybag with a moving body in it. Darby then drove by in a black SUV and honked as Sharif unzipped Yuta from the bag. Yuta had a sheet of paper stuck to his forehead that said, “Forbidden Door.” [c]
-A clip from earlier aired of Renee interviewing Mercedes Mone in the parking lot. She noted she didn’t win the AEW Women’s Title at All In. Mercedes said, “Renee, don’t be such a mark.” She scoffed, cackled, and left.
(2) SKYE BLUE vs. QUEEN AMINATA vs. BILLIE STARKZ (w/Athena) vs. ALEX WINDSOR – Qualifier for Forbidden Door’s TBS Title match
Storm came out to ringside which upset Athena. The bell rang 32 minutes into the hour. After some exchanges in the ring, they did some spots at ringside including a dive by Starkz that the camera largely missed. They cut to a double-box break at 3:00. [c/db]
All four were down and slow to get up at 8:00 after headbutts. Fans chanted “AEW!” When Athena leaped onto the ring apron, Storm yanked her down. Windsor small packaged Starkz to win.
WINNER: Windsor in 12:00.
-Afterward, Mercedes walked out as Windsor stared her down. “Geez, that’s a lot of belts,” chuckled Taz, as Mercedes handed them to the ref to hold. Athena then leaped off the top rope and gave Storm the O-Face. Mercedes then gave Windsor a backstabber. Mercedes and Athena had a truce-like staredown mid-ring. [c]
-Renee interviewed The Young Bucks about facing Brodido. They yelled at a production guy about their entrances being scaled back. They handed him a sheet of paper with instructions.
-As Kyle Fletcher, Don Callis, and the rest of the family (sans Kazuchika Okada) came out, they showed on an inset screen Fletcher beating Dustin for the TNT Title. Excalibur said Dustin has to undergo double knee replacement surgery now. Taz said that’s going to be a long road to recovery.
-Renee interviewed Fletcher and Callis mid-ring. Callis said he is building the largest numerical faction in pro wrestling to gain power. He said there are three belts in the family. He said just like Kazuchika Okada cast Kenny Omega in the trash heap of wrestling history, Fletcher might’ve retired a legend in winning that belt. Fans chanted, “F— Don Callis!” Fletcher said his other opponents will suffer the same fate. He said he’ll be the greatest TNT Champion of all-time on his way to to becoming the overall greatest of all time.
Callis told Fletcher that he will become the greatest TNT Champion of all time. He said all-time greats get art made of them. He said he has been painting him lately. “How bad do you want to see it!” he said. Fletcher said, “Oh, so bad! So bad” Callis said, “How bad do you want it! Do you want to see it?” Fletcher said, “Take it off!” Callis revealed the painting and it was a nude Fletcher with a belt covering his crotch with a muscular chiselled Callis standing behind him. Fletcher loved it and hugged him.
Fletcher said his first defense will be this Saturday on Collision. He said it doesn’t matter who shows up. He said he’ll be TNT Champion for a “very, very, very, very, very long time.” He held up the mic and said the words in a sexually suggestive manner.
[HOUR TWO]
-Alicia Atout interviewed Adam Copeland. She said Christian Cage apologized without a single shred of remorse. Copeland said he didn’t know how to take it, but it wasn’t an apology. “He’s learned nothing and has no concept of what he’s been the last few years,” he said. He said he has his hands full with FTR and Stokely Hathaway now. He said next week, for the first time ever, he’ll face Stokely in an official match. He said if FTR interfere, their restraining order goes away.
(3) BRODIDO (Bandido & Brody King) vs. THE YOUNG BUCKS (Matt & Nick Jackson) – Tag Tournament match
Brodido came out first. When the Bucks came out, the video screen didn’t raise enough and they had to crawl under it. Justin Roberts then read their ring entrance order literally word for word in a mocking way. Taz said he read it like he was sending a voice text. Then pyro blasted, but it was weak and sputtered with puffs of smoke and no noise. The graphic said it was “Max & Jeremy.” Taz called that an obscure reference. Their music sounded like an ice cream truck version, according to to Schiavone. The bell rang 5 minutes into the second hour.
When Schiavone noted the fans were chanting “Jobbers!” at the Bucks, Taz told him not to say that word because it was a bad word. Bandido and Brody got the better of the Bucks at ringside. They cut to a double-box break at 4:00 as Brody held up a fan sign that said “Young Bucks Are Jobbers.” [c/db]
With the Bucks in control, they cut to another double-box break at 10:00. [c/db]
Brody splashed both Bucks in the corner and then landed a cannonball on Matt. Bandido landed a a high springboard flip dive and then played to the crowd. Brody helped propel him higher. Matt avoided a double-team move and then landed a Canadian Destroyer. They stereo superkicked Brody and then stomped Bandido followed by a TK Driver for a near fall. Brody broke up the cover. Fans stood and cheered. A soft “This is awesome!” chant rang out.
Brody gave Matt a Death Valley Driver onto the ring apron. Bandido brawled with Matt at ringside on the barricade. Bandido pressed Matt onto Nick at ringside and then played to the crowd. Nick broke up a bridge suplex cover by Bandido a minute later. Bandido landed a top rope blockbuster for a near fall. Bandido pinned Matt seconds later after the Brodido double-team finisher.
WINNER: Brodido in 21:00 to advance to face FTR in the finals to earn a match at Forbidden Door for the AEW Tag Team Titles.
(Keller’s Analysis: Excellent match with a refreshing clean upset finish. I hope it leads somewhere for Brodido. The Bucks entrance was fun too.)
-A video package aired on MJF vs. Mark Briscoe narrated by Excalibur.
(Keller’s Analysis: This made the match feel bigger.)
-Renee interviewed MVP backstage about Brodido’s win. MVP said they’re magnificent. He wished FTR and Brodido best wishes and said they’d be happy to hurt whoever wins. MJF walked in with a conciliatory demeanor. He said together they can win the World Title. MVP cut him off and said he doesn’t get it. MVP said they hurt people, and since MJF joined them, it was all about him. He said his ego is more than anybody can stand, “and that’s coming from me.” He gave MJF a thumbs down. He said he loves him like a little brother, so they’ll leave him in one piece so he can pursue the title. MJF suggested it’s just business, not personal then. MVP said if he wins the World Title, Lashley will come after him “and that will be personal.” MJF shoved the camera lens in frustration. [c]
-Alicia interviewed FTR and Stokely backstage about Copeland vs. Stokely next week. Cash said they can see through Copeland better than anyone. Stokely said he’s not a wrestler, and he’s also injured. He said he’s short, bald, “and can’t get any ho’s.” Dax assured him, “You can get the ho’s.” Stokely said he’s been fighting his entire life. He said the fight continues next week because his boss asked him to, and he said he’d have a big smile on his face. He said he’ll have to tell his kids that Big Stoke pinned him in the ring. He said, “Top guys out.” He looked worried.
-They went to the announcers at ringside who threw to a video package on the Swerve Strickland-Okada feud.
-Renee interviewed Swerve and Prince Nana in the aisle, so he was able to get his entrance theme played and fans got to chant “Swerve’s house!” He said there’s never been another Swerve and, when he’s done, there will never be another one like him. He said he put the fear of God into Okada. He said he’s the most dangerous man in AEW. He said he has a chip on his shoulder after losing two big matches in London in the past. He said he’s going to continue his legacy by defeating a Japanese legend and stand over Okada’s defeated family. He said he’ll have his arm raised afterward with the Unified Championship belt in his hands.
(Keller’s Analysis: Swerve is an example of a wrestler who has just gotten better on the mic with consistent reps the last couple years.)
-Alicia interviewed Mark Briscoe backstage. Hangman interrupted right away and talked about how they have crossed paths before AEW. He said he admires him more than ever. He said if he wins tonight, he hopes he’s the next one to challenge him for the World Title. He wished him luck and shook his hand. [c]
-Renee interviewed Aminata backstage. Willow Nightingale interrupted and said they’re going to take care of Julia Hart and Thelka on Saturday on Collision, Kris Statlander interrupted and said in honor of womanhood, Willow should give a speech. Willow said she’s there to smile, win matches, and straighten out anyone who gets in the way of that. Statlander rolled her eyes and threw flower pedals in the air.
(4) MJF vs. MARK BRISCOE
MJF came out first. Then Briscoe. The bell rang 51 minutes into the hour. Briscoe took early control and they brawled up the steps into the crowd and then back at ringside. MJF rolled out of range for a top rope elbowdrop at 3:00. MJF then took over after using the ref as a shield. They cut to a double-box break at 7:00 with MJF in control. [c/db]
MJF had Briscoe in an abdominal stretch coming out of the break.
[OVERRUN]
Briscoe rallied and set up MJF for a flying elbowdrop on a table at ringside. MJF then put Briscoe in a Boston Crab mid-ring at 13:00. Briscoe eventually landed his top rope elbowdrop for a two count at 16:00. When Briscoe went for his flying elbowdrop on a table, MJF moved and thus Briscoe crashed through the table. MJF rolled into the ring to try to get a countout win. Briscoe beat the count. MJF landed a Heat Seeker. Briscoe put his boot on the bottom rope, but the ref didn’t see it and counted to three.
WINNER: MJF in 18:00.
-Hangman came out afterward and brawled with MJF. MJF retreated into the crowd after security pulled them apart. Hangman broke free and attacked MJF again in the crowd. Hangman threw MJF into the ring and took off his jacket. MJF rolled out of the ring and retreated up the ramp as the show faded out.
