[HOUR ONE]

-After the Paul Levesque-narrated “Then, Now, Together… Forever,” Michael Cole narrated a highlight package on the Elimination Chamber event from last weekend with a focus on Rhea Ripley’s win, the arrival of Danhausen (including a New York Times headline saying he became “pro wrestling’s strangest star”), and Randy Orton winning the men’s Chamber after Drew McIntyre KO’d Cody Rhodes with his title belt. They also showed Seth Rollins unmasking after he stomped Logan Paul. Then they showed G.M. Nick Aldis lashing out at Drew afterward and announcing he had booked Drew to defend against Cody tonight.

-Joe Tessitore introduced the show as they showed an aerial view of Portland. They showed a pensive Cody Rhodes in the empty arena earlier contemplating his opportunity tonight. Also, Drew stared at his title belt. Then Ripley chatting with Damien Priest, and Jade Cargill admiring herself in her phone. Tessitore said they are “only six weeks away from WrestleMania” and that you could feel it in the air.

-Randy Orton made his entrance. Barrett said he’s never seen him as relaxed as this since he has locked in his chance to challenge for the WWE Title. He said the only question remaining is whom he would face – Drew or Cody. Fans chanted “Randy!” and then “RKO!” He smiled. It’s nine minutes into the hour at this point. He joked that he arrived at the venue “and I swear it was on time.” He said the WrestleMania sign was already up.

He said he has been in 20 WrestleManias. He said he realized he has “only main evented twice.” He said it doesn’t matter how many titles you’ve won or how many records you’ve set, there’s no guarantee you’ll go to WrestleMania, much less main event. “But here we are!” he said with a smile. He said he can officially say he is going back to the main event of WrestleMania.

He said he has never been a guy to stand in the ring and say he is the best. “I’m just not wired that way,” he said. He said he lets his peers do the talking and a lot of them put me in that category. He said men he admired growing up like Ric Flair, the Undertaker, Harley Race, and JBL put him in that category. He said JBL used to say, “Randy Orton is what you get if you were to build a pro wrestler from the ground up.”

He said it makes him so proud that people consider him to be at the top of his game to be in the spot he is in. He said the opportunity wasn’t given to him, though. “I earned this son of a bitch,” he said. (Well, Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre sure helped.)

He said he’ll know in a few hours who his opponent will be. He said he feels differently about the two possibilities. He said either way, he’s not leaving Las Vegas empty-handed. A loud “Randy!” chant broke out. He said he plans to accomplish that one way – by using the three most dangerous letters in sports entertainment, R-K-O. Trick Williams’s music interrupted.

Trick asked them to stop the music. He said the sexiest and most entertaining superstar alive has arrived. He said voices in his head have a bone to pick with him. He said he should be in the main event instead of Orton. He said an even bigger problem is that he came out on Saturday and said he’s 6-5. Orton stood center-ring with his back turned. Trick said he’s in his ring, man-to-man, face-to-face, eye-to-eye. He said he’s as tall as he says he is, and it’s not because of his lemon pepper steppers. Orton gave him RKO.

-They went to Tessitore and Barrett at ringside who reacted to that segment.

-A clip aired from earlier of Carmelo Hayes shaking hands with Aldis. Aldis told him he’s been a defending champion with integrity. Aldis said requests have been coming in from all over the company and the world. He said someone caught his eye in particular. As he was about to reveal who, Hayes stopped him and said surprise him. Aldis wished him luck.

-Carmelo Hayes made his entrance. [c]

(1) CARMELO HAYES vs HIJO DEL DR. WAGNER JR. – U.S. Title Open Challenge

The announced Wagner Jr. as the AAA Latino-American Champion. An introductory vignette aied on Wagner Jr. Barrett said Hayes wasn’t expecting Wagner Jr. The bell rang 25 minutes into the hour.

The match completely fell apart two minutes in as badly as, honestly, any sequence in United States television history. (Okay, my memory is probably weak enough to have forgotten some worse, but this was really bad as they weren’t on the same page, botched a move, stood awkwardly for a second, moved into the next sequence with no momentum that eventually led to Hayes kicking Wagner Jr., nudging him to a different place in the ropes, and then hitting a springboard legdrop. He struck a pose as they cut to a double-box break at 2:00. [c/db]

Hayes landed a flying crossbody off the top rope onto Wagner Jr. at ringside during the break. Wagner Jr. landed a superplex after the break and scored a two count. They stood mid-ring and chopped each other in the chest. Hayes took a flip bump on a Wagner clothesline. Tessitore said he went “heels over head” (which always made more sense than “head over heels,” but I’ve never heard anyone actually say it.) Wagner landed some subsequent moves and scored two counts.

Hayes surprised Wagner with a First 48 after countering a Wagner Driver. Hayes made the cover, and Wagner “kicked out” (although it was perhaps the most listless kickout ever). Wagner landed a running knee to Hayes in the corner and then landed a twisting sitout powerbomb for a near fall. Hayes avoided a top rope moonsault and the hit Nothing But Net for the win.

Hayes, in a classy move, handed Wagner Jr. his AAA belt afterward. Wagner bowed to him.

WINNER: Hayes in 11:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: Yikes. Check your biases if you are going to contend that went well. Quite a bit went okay, but when it was off, it was rough. The crowd was not invested early, but polite by the end. )

-Cathy Kelley asked Ilja Dragunov about refusing his chance to face Hayes for the U.S. Title. He said others would accept an offer even if they hadn’t earned it, but that’s not him. Kelley asked where he developed that attitude. He said from his mother. He said she was kind-hearted, but ridiculed by people. He said she carried the weight of the world on her shoulders. He said until he can become that warrior again, he’ll wait. Miz walked in and asked, “Wait? Wait?” Kit Wilson walked in and told Dragunov that his masculinity has hi so obsessed with violence that it has made him one thing – toxic. (I assume that is based on current events, and perhaps even “Secretary of War” Pete Hegseth in particular, the embodiment of juvenile, unhinged, dangerous toxic masculinity with the most capable military at his disposal.) Dragunov said he thinks fighting is the answer and implied he should face them. He walked away. Miz said as the locker room leader, Wilson should handle this.  Wilson said he was talking about him.

-They showed balloons being brought to ringside for the celebration. [c]

-A graphic touted Orton’s 14 world title reigns, tied for 3rd most all-time.

-They joined Priest mid-conversation with Aldis. Priest said he knows it’s tough to get everyone on WrestleMania who wants it. He asked who he’s wrestling tonight. R-Truth walked in and asked, “What’s up?” Truth told Priest he’s in big trouble. Priest was confused. Aldis said they’re entered as a team in Tag Team Turmoil tonight. Aldis said he thought Priest knew that.  He asked if he’s okay with that. Priest said winning the tag titles sounds good to him. Truth was happy.  Drew walked up to Aldis and eyed him sternly. He said he had a chance to calm down since Saturday. “Now let’s be reasonable,” he said. Drew said he is the face of his brand, and he was assured Cody wouldn’t get a title shot unless he won the Rumble or the Chamber. “He won neither, so make this right,” he said. Aldis said it’s unreasonable of him to look him in the eye and promise not to get involved, but he did, so since he broke his word to him, he is breaking his. He said he must defend tonight or else he’ll have to forfeit the title. Drew said he has defeated Cody before, and he’ll do it again tonight.

-Mark Nash introduced Lash Legend and Nia Jax for what Tessitore preempting called an “over the top celebration.” Barrett narrated a clip of their win last week. Jax told everyone to get a real good look at “two six-foot thoroughbred stallions.” Lash danced a bit and said, “That’s right.” Lash said this is the first and last warning to everyone in the locker room that they aren’t going anywhere. She said since it’s Women’s History Month, it’s only right for them to have a toast and cheer for themselves as the most dominant tag team champions. They each held a glass of what looked like champagne as pyro blasted. Charlotte Flair’s music interrupted. She walked out with Alexa Bliss.

Bliss said they cheated and interfered to become champions. Then Kiana James and Giulia walked out. Kiana said she won a Triple Threat match against Nia and Charlotte, and she came out on top. Giulia then spoke (and easily could have been mistaken for Asuka with her inflection). Aldis said they don’t determine who will get a title shot through words, but action in the ring. He booked the challengers against each other.

(Keller’s Analysis: Jax and Lash play off of each other well and are a good heel team that fans can easily root against.)

(2) CHARLOTTE & ALEXA BLISS vs. KIANA JAMES & GIULIA – No. 1 Contendership match for the Women’s Tag Team Titles

The match was joined in progress 56 minutes into the hour. Charlotte flip dove off the ring apron a minute into the action onto both opponents, then flexed. Charlotte lifted her knees on a standing moonsault attempt by Kiana a minute later. They kicked each other and cartoon-bumped to the mat at the same time. After a few seconds, they both tagged out to their partners.

[HOUR TWO]

Bliss reverse-whipped Giulia and then dropkicked her. She kicked her off the ring apron to ringside and then leaped at her. Kiana caught her and rammed her onto the edge of the ring apron. Giulia kicked Bliss and threw her back into the ring. The heels controlled the action during the break. Charlotte made a comeback and chopped away at both of them.

Back from the break, she landed a handspring clothesline on Kiana and then overhead tossed her near Kiana. She kipped up and strutted. Fans stood and cheered. Barrett said Charlotte “completely turned this one around.” She leaped off the top rope with a moonsault onto both opponents and scored an official two count on James. A minute later, Charlotte delivered Natural Selection on Giulia for the win. “They are right back where they belong,” said Tessitore.

WINNERS: Charlotte & Bliss in roughly 12:00 or so.

-They went to Tessitore and Barrett at ringside. They shifted conversation to the Drew vs. Cody main event.

-A clip aired of Jelly Roll saying he’s headed to Smackdown next week. He congratulated Orton and wished Cody luck tonight.

-They cut to Cody backstage (who seemed to be playing with his nipple through his jacket). Kelley asked how he’s going to navigate everything. Cody said the only thing that remains in his way of a main event at WrestleMania is Drew. He said he hopes the next time they speak, it’ll be to the WWE Champion. Sami walked in and said he isn’t trying to get in his head before his match. He said it’s crazy this match is even happening. Cody impatiently asked what’s crazy about it. Sami asked if he was kidding. He said he lost in the Chamber match, and the whole point is the winner gets a title shot, but he lost. “Once again, Cody, everything falls into your lap,” he said. He said Cody is getting a second-chance, which he never gets. Cody yelled that Sami seems to be already lobbying for a title match and he hasn’t even won it yet. Sami disagreed. Cody told him to explain himself. Sami said he came there to say, “Good luck.” He said it turned into “all of this” instead. Sami said Cody might not believe it, but he wants what’s best for him and go become WWE Champion again. Cody calmly, curly said, “Okay.” Then he walked off. Sami swung wildly at two water bottles on a crate and yelled.

-They went to Tessitore and Barrett who reacted to Sami and Cody. Tessitore then said Trick got a lot of attention on “The Breakfast Club.” He was asked if he’d rather be a Hall of Fame wide receiver or Hall of Famer in wrestling. Trick said he took the helmet off and he’s a superstar now and people know him all over the world. He said football is a beautiful sport, but it’s very American. He said wrestling is all over the world.

(Keller’s Analysis: Trick is checking so many boxes right now in terms of becoming a centerpiece top tier act for WWE. He’s still got more to prove, but so far so good in this short time on the main roster.)

-The Motor City Machine Guns made their entrance for the start of the Tag Team Turmoil match

(3) TAG TEAM TURMOIL MATCH

(a) NATHAN FRASER & AXIOM vs. CHRIS SABIN & ALEX SHELLEY

The match began 18 minutes into the hour. They cut to a break at 3:00. [c]

Fraser landed a flip dive at ringside. Back in the ring, he hit Sabin with a high knee. Sabin and Shelley took over with a double-team sequence. Axiom landed a top rope dropkick as Fraser held him in place. He made the cover near the ropes. The ref counted to three, but Shelley had put Sabin’s leg on the bottom rope. The ref didn’t see it. Shelley protested.

ELIMINATED: Sabin & Shelley in 8:00.

(b) ANGEL GARZA & HUMBERTO CARILLO

Angelo and Humberto charged in and went on the attack aggressively. Axiom set up a top rope move. Humberto knocked Fraser off the top rope on the other side of the ring. Angel and Humberto gave Axiom their finisher for the elimination.

ELIMINATED: Fraser & Axiom in 10:00 total.

The Wyatt Sicks made their entrance. [c]

(c) DEXTER LUMIS & JOE GACY

Back from the break, Angel took over against Lumis. Humberto tagged in. Angel leaped off the top rope and drove Dexter’s head into the mat. Gacy ran in and bashed Angel om the back, so the ref stopped his count at two. Dexter leaped and tagged in Gacy. Tonga Loa yanked Gacy out of the ring. Angel then rolled up Lumis from behind for the elimination.

ELIMINATED: Lumis & Gacy in 18:00 total

Lumis leaped over the top rope onto the MFTs at ringside as Truth and Priest made their way to the ring. [c/db]

(D) R-TRUTH & DAMIEN PRIEST

Truth rallied after the break and landed a Five Knuckle Shuffle. He went for an Attitude Adjustment, but Humberto escaped. Truth applied an STF. Angel broke it up. Truth. mocked Angel. Priest then kicked Angel. All four entered the ring. Truth gave Angel an AA and Priest his South of Heaven and the ref counted both pinfalls at once.

ELIMINATED: Angelo & Humberto in 25:00.

WINNERS: Priest & Truth in 25:00 to earn no. 1 contendership for the WWE Tag Team Titles.

-They showed Drew warming up backstage with arm curls with stretch bands. [c]

-Tessitore plugged WrestleMania.

-Sami chatted with Orton backstage. He congratulated Orton and said he meant everything he said. Sami said Cody qualified because Drew got involved, and he tried to do the right thing. “Whatever,” he said. “But in the Elimination Chamber match, you did the exact same thing to Cody. So, I guess I want to know – how do you do it?” He asked how he can drop Cody the second he drops his back given how much he praises Cody otherwise. Orton said, “Sometimes you’ve got to be selfish. Sami asked if that makes him a bad person. Orton chuckled and said it makes him a 14-time world champion. Sami smiled and said you can’t argue with that. He wished him luck. He said he’ll pulling for him to win no. 15. Orton told Sami that he believes in him and he needs to believe in himself to have championship gold. He told him to maybe try listening to the voices. Orton walked off and in walked Aleister Black and Zelina Vega. Black told Sami that it’s just the nature of the beast. Zelina said Orton can’t help himself.

-Rhea Ripley made her entrance.  [c]

-Ripley said since it seems Jade Cargill has a lot to say to her, come to the ring and say it to her face. Rhea waved her to the ring. Jade’s entrance then aired. Jade offered a handshake. Rhea tepidly accepted it. Jade said she gave her a handshake because she respects her and all her accomplishments and how all the fans love her. “I respect how you earned your way to see in a titles hot at WrestleMania,” she said. “As someone who works hard in the gym, I respect how hard you work to build a body like you have. I respect it. I do.” She paused and then said, “But I’m not impressed. Sure, your arms are big, but mine are bigger. Your legs, yeah, they’re muscular, powerful even, but mine are more powerful. I’m more powerful. And I am more worthy for the WWE Women’s Champion [sic] and come WrestleMania, I’m gonna beat the hell out of you and there’s nothing you can do about it, because I’m that bitch.” She dropped the mic and stared at Rhea with smug self-satisfaction.

Ripley offered a handshake. Jade accepted. Rhea said she respects her honesty. She said now she knows what she really thinks about her. She said she might not impress her physically, but she does impress her physically. She said it like there was a catch. She complimented her shoulders and said they might be bigger than hers. She said maybe her legs are, too. “But, if you me with your best shot, do you really think I’m going to go down and stay down? No. But if I hit you with mine, there’s absolutely no way you’re getting back up.” She said the difference between them is her body is built for show, whereas hers is built for fighting. “You work out so you’re more aesthetically pleasing,” she said. “I work out so my body can survive and thrive in this business.” She said she can flex all she wants once the bell rings, but she is going to fight and take that title from her and take it with force. “And there’s not a damn thing you can do about it because I’m that bitch,” she said, after which she dropped the mic.

(Keller’s Analysis: Nicely done. You’d never know they went at each other on social media this past week. Knowledge of that wasn’t a prerequisite to understand this exchange and be psyched up for the match. It made the match feel big without going anyplace outside of the lines of it being presented as a sport.)

[HOUR THREE]

-Backstage, Alex Shelley asked Candice LeRae what’s going on with Johnny Gargano, who was face down on the crate. Sabin walked in and took issue with Shelley shifting his focus away from their loss. Sabin asked Shelley why he didn’t break up the pin. Shelley told him he did. He said he can watch the replay. Sabin didn’t believe him and said they needed to talk. LeRae then told Gargano, “We can’t keep doing this.” She told him to get up and get back to being Johnny Wrestling. He sat up and said she’s right. “Let’s go,” he said. She asked where. He said, “To the ring.” [c]

-Tessitore noted that Demolition were added to the WWE Hall of Fame class. this year. They showed footage of Undertaker delivering the news to Bill Eadie (Axe) and Barry Darsow (Smash).

-A vignette aired with Uncle Howdy telling Solo Sikoa that he keeps putting his family in compromising positions without taking into account the consequences. He said he won’t rest until the lantern is returned to him and his family will keep looking over their shoulders and learn “there is nothing left to do but run.”

-Gargano and LeRae were in the ring. Gargano was pacing. Tessitore said it’s great to see a re-energized Gargano back. He said it’s time everyone remembers who he is. He said it’s time he remembers who he is, too. “I need to be Johnny Wrestling again.” He said it starts tonight and invited anyone in the locker room to come on out.

After a few seconds, Oba Femi made his entrance. Barrett said that’s not what Johnny meant. “Go comatose again while you still can!” exclaimed Barrett.

(4) OBA FEMI vs. JOHNNY GARGANO

Gargano looked nervous, but got psyched up. He leaped at Oba, who was unaffected. He then went on the attack with a barrage of charges into the corner. Barrett said this was LeRae’s fault as Johnny “just wanted to sleep.” Oba finished Gargano with his Fall from Grace for the win.

WINNER: Oba Femi in 1:00.

-Jade crossed paths with Michin and B-Fab. Michin asked if she already forgot about her. Jade said she’s got a lot going on, but she’d see her next week.

-Tessitore hyped Drew vs. Cody. [c]

-Danhausen startled Aldis backstage. He had a sheet of paper with his demands on it. Danhausen said, “If you’re the boss here, as you say, you can get me this Hall of Fame induction and a mentor who can take Danhausen straight to the top.” Aldis said that’s not his job, but then he saw Miz. He told Danhausen to hold his thought. Miz was on the phone and then told Aldis he wants to lead future Superstars. Aldis said he has someone for him. He introduced him to Danhausen. Danhausen introduced himself to him. Miz wasn’t pleased. Danhausen said he has a legendary career and is perfect. He said he’ll make him WWE Champion and get him his own TV show. Miz said he’s not going to mentor him. Danhausen said if he doesn’t, he’s cursed. He told him to remember what happened to Dom on Monday.

-Tessitore asked Barrett if he’s a Fanhausen. Barrett said he’s skeptical. Then they plugged Jade vs. Michin next week on Smackdown, plus Jelly Roll. Also, a contract signing for the WWE Title match.

-A video package aired on the men’s Elimination Chamber.

-They showed Drew and Cody each ready to make their entrances. [c]

(5) DREW MCINTYRE vs. CODY RHODES – WWE Title match

Cody entered first. Then Drew. Then formal ring introductions took place. [c]

The bell rang after the break 39 minutes into the hour. Drew rolled to ringside right away. Cody pursued him. They battled back and forth at ringside and in the ring for several minutes.

Drew worked over Cody’s arm and stomped on it. Drew pointed at the WrestleMania sign. Tessitore said Drew was “admiring his work.” Barrett said save gloating until after you win your match. Cody recovered and went after Drew in the corner on the top turnbuckle. Cody climbed to the top rope and delivered a superplex. Both were down and slow to get up.

Cody applied a figure-four leglock on Drew at 10:00. Drew reached the bottom rope, but the ref didn’t force a break. Drew yanked on Cody’s sore arm which led to Drew escaping. Drew dropped to the floor and clutched his left knee. Cody leaped through the ropes and knocked Drew down. Cody cleared the announce desk. Cody stood on top of the desk with Drew. Cody set up a Crossroads, but the desk collapsed and both went down. (Imagine one or two injuries there, throwing WrestleMania into disarray!) Fans chanted, “We want tables!” Cody pulled a folding table out from under the ring. Drew attacked him and set up the table. He ranked Cody’s eyes and then powerbombed him through the table. He threw Cody into the ring.

In the ring, Drew gave Cody a Crossroads for a two count at 15:00. Both were slow to get up. Drew signaled for a Claymore. Cody caught him with a sidekick and a Claymore of his own for a two count. Both were slow to get up again. Cody leaped off the top rope. Drew ducked and then spun Cody around. The ref almost got hit by Cody’s boot. He was thrown off in the corner. Cody threw Drew toward the ref, but Drew stopped short. Cody punched Drew and went for a Disaster Kick. Drew pulled the ref into the path. Cody hit the ref instead.

Drew and Cody continued to battle. Cody gave Drew a Crossroads, but the ref was still down. Cody got up to call for a second ref. A new ref ran out, but Drew delivered a Claymore for a believable near fall. Drew sat up, looking frustrated. Drew stood and eyed the second ref. Drew threw Cody into the ringpost twice. Drew stood and delivered a Glasgow Kiss to the ref. Barrett said that could lead to another suspension for Drew. Drew grabbed a chair at ringside and entered the ring. Fans cheered something that the announcers ignored. Jacob Fatu leaned into the ring and yanked the chair away. Fatu laughed at Drew. Cody rolled up Drew and scored a two count, made by original ref Charles Robinson. Drew gave Cody a Future Shock DDT. He thenset up a Claymore, but Cody side-stepped him. Fans chanted “Cody!” Cody landed a Super Cutter and then a Crossroads for the win.

WINNER: Cody in 20:00 to capture the WWE Title.

-Tessitore said the WrestleMania main event is now set: Cody vs. Orton. A graphic appeared on the screen. Cody’s music played as the crowd cheered. Pyro blasted to end the show. “The road to WrestleMania just became the Rhodes to WrestleMania,” said Tessitore.
