[HOUR ONE]
-Michael Cole introduced the show as they showed Oba Femi and hyped the Oba Femi-Brock Lesnar contract signing. Then they showed backstage and arrival snippets of Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky; Penta, Je’Von Evans, and Dragon Lee; and C.M. Punk.
Punk walked right to the ring. Cole acted surprised as if it were not scheduled. His music played as he walked past Gorilla position toward the ring as fans cheered. Fans chanted “OTC!” as Punk sat cross-legged mid-ring. He said Houston was a wrestling city. “This is Paul Boesch territory.” He said he likes to hear about the old timers and can’t help but wonder how they would operate in times like this. “Sometimes I dream, what would Harley Race do?” He said the important stuff happens when they’re awake.
He stood and said Roman Reigns was not present tonight. He said two weeks ago, with help from his cousins, he put him through a table with a powerbomb. He said he couldn’t wait to get to Madison Square Garden to get revenge. He said he got his receipt with his two fists. He said he put Reigns through a table alone. He said Roman says he hates him, which is good, because that means he’s doing it right. “I won’t trade my authenticity for approval,” he said. “Being hated by losers is the price I pay for not being one of them.”
When an “OTC” chant broke out, he said they should chant it because he might show up. “I doubt it, but maybe,” he said. “I showed up and I’m an old man. Old, not weak.” A “C.M. Punk!” chant started. He said he is going to explain why he hates Roman. He stood on the announce desk and took off his jacket. He said WrestleMania is the biggest show of the year.
He said he has tools that were sharpened through self-belief, years of hard work, and sometimes spite but always sacrifice. He said Roman’s tools are store bought and hand-delivered and plastic. He said back in the day he was too young and stupid to understand, and now he’s too rich and too old to give a damn.
He said he understands why TKO sends Roman’s “beltless ass to Jimmy Fallon.” He said, “It’s because you’re safe and you’re boring and you’re plastic and you’re saccharin and you’re manufactured. And me, I’m dangerous.” He said you never know what he’s going to do or say. He said he can film a half dozen TV shows and movies and make it every week, whereas fans are going to boo him when he gives them the news that he’s not there. “And when you do bother to show up, you show up late, gleefully leave early, and puff your chest out in the back like you’re The Rock. At least The Rock is a Hollywood Superstar. Oh, I’m sorry – was a Hollywood Superstar. Just like you, Roman, were a champion.”
He said that fairy tale is long over “because this is pro wrestling and not cinema.” He said his gloated cousin isn’t on the Board of Directors. He said he doesn’t surround himself with yes-men and wise man and advocates who protect him from the truth. He said he didn’t have a dad who gave him a job because he sucked at football. He said he has earned everything he has. He said Roman is a buck-toothed nepo-baby who ate dog food for a weird old man.
He said “that weird old man” for years treated him like a dog, but he had FU money and left with his dignity. He said he can’t be controlled like Roman tries to control his cousins. “They can’t control me,” he said, gesturing toward the fans. A loud “C.M. Punk!” chant broke out. He asked if they are having fun yet. He said they should be careful when they tell him to throw a pipe bomb. “This is what you get,” he said. He said Roman got so many chances and sucked at the first eight so bad that he should have blackballed. He said he can stand on the bridge and blow it up because he knows how to swim.
He then hopped to ringside and said he’s not done. He cut a promo on Pat McAfee. He said he thinks he can come to “my business and run your mouth.” He said he wrote a check he can’t cash. He said if wants to talk about ticket sales, he should call that agent who shoe-horned him into the show “and tell him to lower the ticket prices.” Fans popped huge for that. “I’ll be damned if I’m going to have you – someone who kicked a football for a living – come to my business and come to me and tell me about selling tickets and putting asses in seats. You’ve got a receipt coming from me.” He said he wants ticket prices lowered because he wants the families to come to Las Vegas and see him stand on Roman Reigns’s throat at WrestleMania.
(Keller’s Analysis: Great delivery. Some biting content. I’m on record consistently saying there’s a serious downside to Roman and Punk continually demeaning each other in ways that land when both are babyfaces, forcing fans to choose a side or reconcile the weaknesses and faults of the wrestlers they love. They can turn what McAfee said into TV content and those were upset by what he said – certainly including Punk – can be co-opted into making it seem like an angle or try to turn a negative into a positive by speaking out against what McAfee said, but real damage was done on Friday by people who don’t understand this business including Ari Emanuel and Pat McAfee. I can understand Punk being especially ticked off that the WrestleMania he’s finally truly headlining was framed as a failure on Smackdown on Friday.)
-They went to Cole and Corey Graves at ringside. Cole threw to a video package on LA. Knight crashing IShowSpeed’s YouTube show and threw him into the camera.
-They cut backstage to IShowSpeed who said he “can’t be doing this no more” He saw Danhausen and asked him to rescind his curse. Danhausen said he would if he gave him his mansion. Raw G.M. Adam Pearce asked IShowSpeed what he was doing there. IShowSpeed said he needs his help. Pearce told him to go home. Austin Theory and Logan Paul walked up to them. Logan said what Knight did to him is unforgivable IShowSpeed said he was going to leave. Logan said his only safe space is with them now. Theory said the parking lot is not safe. They led him away. Pearce said, “That is a terrible idea.”
-Theory, Logan, and IShowSpeed made their entrance. [c]
(1) AUSTIN THEORY (w/Logan Paul, IShowSpeed) vs. L.A. KNIGHT
Knight’s ring entrance took place. Cole wondered if IShowSpeed knew who Theory’s opponent was. The bell rang 24 minutes into the hour. Cole said Theory and Knight haven’t wrestled each other in three years and a lot has happened since them. Graves said Knight needs to realize that this is a different Theory. Graves said Theory’s head is clear and he now refers to himself as “The Pressure” because he has learned to embrace the pressure. Cole said Theory told him when he was young and before he even knew who he was, the expectations for him were high and “that was pressure.” He said he has learned how to use the pressure in his favor. Theory said that youthful indiscretion may have benefited him now. He said he’s a more complete package now. Cole said he is less than three years removed from beating John Cena at WrestleMania. Graves said people want to gloss over that. Cole said he’s all business now and no more laughing and goofing around. Knight wrecking ball kicked Theory and then clotheslined him over the ringside barricade as they cut to a break at 3:00. [c]
Knight rammed Theory’s head into the announce desk at ringside right in front of Logan. Knight eyed IShowSpeed and told him to keep his distance. Logan shoved IShowSpeed into Knight. Knight thought it was IShowSpeed retaliating for Knight’s words seconds earlier. IShowSpeed ran away. Knight pursued him. The Usos stepped out onto the stage to their music, which trapped IShowSpeed until he ran and leapfrogged Knight and dove into the ring. Knight caught him by his boots. Knight knocked Logan off the ring apron and then Logan rolled him up with a handful of tights for the win.
WINNER: Theory in 10:00.
-IShowSpeed soaked up the situation afterward and pleaded his case to the Usos and Knight. Fans chanted, “You f—ed up!” Jey backed him into the corner and said, “It was you!” Jimmy encouraged Jey to go for a 2D. Logan pulled IShowSpeed to safety. Graves said, “That’s what friends are for.” Knight told them not to go anywhere. He asked Pearce to walk out. He suggested a six-man tag match at WrestleMania. Knight said they IShowSpeed really stepped in it. He asked Pearce if he would make the match. Pearced looked to the crowd. Fans cheered. Pearce asked Logan if he’s willing to participate. Logan sai dhe was. Pearce said he warned IShowSpeed he should have gone home, but now it’s official. IShowSpeed soaked up what was going on and looked like things were spiraling out of control for him.
(Keller’s Analysis: They set up IShowSpeed aligning with Logan and Theory pretty believably, but the babyfaces had to be a bit unfair to IShowSpeed in the process.)
-They went to Cole and Graves at ringside. Cole said McAfee ticked off a lot of people last Friday. He said he and McAfee were as close as brothers, and what happened was one of the most bizarre, surreal, and disappointing things. He said he had so much to say, but he decided to take a step back to see what the end game was. He threw to a video package on the Randy Orton-Pat McAfee-Cody Rhodes angle.
-They showed Finn Balor backstage as Cole hyped his scheduled match against J.D. McDonagh next. Kofi Kingston and Grayson Waller were bickering in the background. [c]
-A vignette aired with C.M. Punk noting the time he was an extra playing a gangster at WrestleMania 22 and how he thinks about that every time he arrives at a WWE event.
–As Balor made his entrance, he said, “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.” Dominik Mysterio charged out and attacked Balor from behind as J.D. was already in the ring. Balor fought back. J.D. joined in. Balor threw J.D. into the ringpost. Balor stomped away at Dom in the ring and then tossed J.D. over the top rope. Dom hit Balor with his AAA Title belt. He bashed him across his back with a chair.
(Keller’s Analysis: So no match?)
-A vignette aired on A.J. Lee.
-A sitdown interview aired with Cole and Lee. He asked how she was doing just a couple weeks before her first WrestlewMania in 11 years. As she began to speak, Becky Lynch interrupted. She took a dig at Cole throwing softball questions at her. He said he’s a terrible play-by-play announcer and now a terrible interviewer. Cole said he didn’t need that and he got up and left. Becky took his chair and confronted her. She accused her of giving her a hug with “your fake niceness” early in her career. She said Lee knew she just saw her replacement, and that’s why she left the next day.
Lee said she is proud of Becky. Becky told her not to condescend her. Lee said she couldn’t have achieved her heights without what she did first. She said the fans never forgot her. She said she knows who she is. “I am your favorite wrestler’s favorite wrestler,” she said. She told Becky to ask her daughter who her favorite wrestler is and she’ll say it’s her. She stood and said, “See you at Mania.” Becky threw a brief tantrum.
(Keller’s Analysis: No new material there, but new setting. I just don’t know if there’s a ton of heel heat for Becky based on her having to listen again to Lee tout her influence in her relatively short time in WWE during her first stint.)
-Cole said they will reveal tomorrow morning on ESPN the full first and second night line-ups.
-Bayley made her ring entrance, accompanied by Lyra Valkyria. [c]
(2) BAYLEY (w/Lyra Valkyria) vs. LASH LEGEND (w/Nia Jax)
Cole noted that Nikki Bella suffered an ankle injury last month and is working hard to rehab it in time for WrestleMania. The bell rang 59 minutes into the hour. Cole said this is a first-time one-on-one match-up.
[HOUR TWO]
Cole said Bayley told him that no one is taking her and Lyra seriously as a team. Lash kicked Bayley to ringside. Lyra checked on her. They cut to a break at 2:00. [c]
Lash was in control after the break. Bayley avoided a running boot by Lash and then took control. She landed an elbowdrop and scored a two count. Jax tripped Bayley from ringside. Bayley ducked. acharging Lash. When Lyra leaped at Jax, Jax caught her and slammed her into the ring apron. Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss came out and went after Jax. Bayley leaped onto the entire crowd. Lash set up a superplex on Bayley, but Bayley countered and landed on her. Lyra was supposed to help make that happen by holding Lash’s boots, but she was pretty late and weak with the interference. The announced acted like it went as planned. Cole said that wouldn’t even be illegal in a Fatal Four-way.
WINNER: Bayley in 9:00.
-A recap aired of the Paul Heyman and Seth Rollins segment last week when Gunther attacked Seth. [c]
-They showed scenes of the Houston downtown skyline. Thjen they showed DeMeco Ryans, the Houston Texan’s football team head coach. They showed Bun B, a rapper, also. Then they panned over to Mark Henry, who blew kisses to the crowd.
-They went to Cole and Graves at ringside. He said this is the first WrestleMania without Hulk Hogan. “No matter how you think about the man, we never would have had WrestleMania” without him. He threw to a video previewing a new documentary on Hogan on Netflix.
-Seth’s ring entrance took place to his theme song. No NPCs in black masks or anything anymore. He let out a “Yeah!” He said he’s been gone for six months and has been waiting to make his entrance again and hear the fans sing his song. They sang it. He circled the ring and encouraged it to continue. Then he re-entered the ring. He said, “Let me say this with my full chest – I am back!” He said in less than two weeks, he goes one-on-one with Gunther. Fans booed.
He said he’s been running it through his head why Gunther attacked him and all he can figure is that Gunther entered into some sort of business relationship with Heyman. He said he has two missions in his head. One is to take back the title he never lost. The other is to kill The Vision. He said Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed are on the shelf and things won’t go well for Logan & Theory if they’re facing The Usos. He said he put Brock Lesnar on a silver platter for Oba Femi. Fans began singing and chanting “Oba! Oba!” He said that man is the future.
He looked into the camera and told Gunther that if he is maintaining a business relationship for Heyman and be a shield for him, then he has made it very personal for him. Fans roared. Gunther then went after Seth. Seth slipped free and applied a sleeper and then went for a stomp. Gunther moved. Seth dove at Gunther. Gunther caught him and threw him into the announce desk. Officials ran out and pulled Seth off of Gunther. Gunther kicked Seth as he was being held. Cole called it a cheap shot and Graves agreed with that characterization. Gunther walked away as Seth was held back.
-They cut backstage to Heyman telling Gunther he isn’t sure why he did what he did at MSG. He said to his knowledge, there is nothing personal between him and Seth, so all he can say is thank you. Gunther said things are personal for different reasons than he is thinking of. They shook hands and smiled. Gunther pulled Heyman toward him and said he owes him so much more than a very big thank you. Heyman blinked hard and rubbed his face.
-They went to ringside where Graves wondered why Gunther did that if he isn’t aligned with Heyman. Cole said Oba and Brock will be in the ring face-to-face later. [c]
-A recap aired of Liv Morgan’s promo last week. Then a vignette aired with Stephanie Vaquer.
-Penta made his ring entrance. [c]
(3) PENTA & DRAGON LEE & JE’VON EVANS vs. EL GRANDE AMERICANO & BRAVO & RAYO
The bell rang 36 minutes into the hour. They cut to an early break. [c]
Penta gave a Mexican Destroyer to Bravo. Je’Von then gave Rayo an OG Cutter for the win.
WINNERS: Evans & Lee & Penta in 8:00.
-Afterward, Rey Mysterio made his surprise entrance to cheers from the fans. Rey said the ladder match at WrestleMania is missing one person. He said he talked to Pearce about it earlier, and he’s now in it. Penta said, “Let’s make history!”
-They went to ringside where Graves said, “Wow! Wow! Wow!” Cole said Rey has been part of some of the greatest ladder matches in WrestleMania history. They threw to a video recap of Cody’s rebuttal of McAfee last Friday. [c]
-Cole hyped Cody interviewing Paul Levesque on his podcast dropping Thursday.
-They showed Iyo Shy and Rhea Ripley backstage. Theory was chatting with Maxxine Dupri in the background again.
-Cole and Graves commented on a recap of what happened earlier with Knight and IShowSpeed.
-A recap aired of the Brock-Oba interactions so far.
-Rhea and Sky made their ring entrance. [c]
-Cole plugged the WWE Hall of Fame. He listed A.J. Styles first, then Demolition, Stephanie McMahon, Sid, Dennis Rodman, and Bad News Brown.
-A vignette aired with Asuka who said Sky’s selfishness tore their family apart. Asuka spoke in Japanese and captions revealed what she said in English. She said she will always be Iyo’s Senpai (a higher-ranking officer or mentor).
(4) RHEA RIPLEY & IYO SKY vs. MICHIN & B-FAB (w/Jade Cargill)
Cole said he still didn’t understand why B-Fab and Michin decided to align with Jade. Graves said they couldn’t beat her, so they decided to join her.
