[HOUR ONE]
-Corey Graves introduced the show as Mr. Iguana, Laredo Kid, La Parka, Omos, Dirty Dominik, Rey Mysterio, and El Grande Americano were shown arriving at the building.
-AAA GM Rey Mysterio narrated a video package recapping the history of Triplemania.
(1) ADELICIOUS & MASCARITA SAGRADA & MINI VIKINGO vs. LADY SHANI & MINI ABISMO NEGRO & JACK CARTWHEEL – Mixed 6-Person Tag Team Match
The ladies started the match with some smooth, athletic takedowns. Shani appeared to be injured very early in the match. Adelicious backed off while the referee checked on her. She rolled to the outside, where she was checked on by medical personnel. The minis took center stage in the ring for a few moments, then tagged out to Vikingo and Cartwheel, who put on a breathtaking display of flashy, high-energy offense before pausing to shake hands.
Cartwheel executed a move that I can’t even begin to describe off the top rope, then tagged out to Abismo, who began bullying the teenaged Vikingo. He scored a near fall after a crushing senton, then tagged back out to Cartwheel. A double-team effort on Vikingo backfired, as the wiry teen flipped, flopped, and flew out of the way. Sagrada tagged in and wowed the crowd with some spectacular offense before tagging out to Adelicious, who executed a cross body from the top turnbuckle to the floor on Abismo and Cartwheel. Back inside the ring, Vikingo landed a sky-high shooting star press on Abismo for the pin.
WINNERS: Adelicious & Mascarita Sagrada & Mini Vikingo at 9:16.
(Miller’s Take: It’s a shame that the very first match on such an important event started with an injury within the opening minute. I ran it back a few times, and it was still hard to tell what took Lady Shani out of the match, but it appeared that Adelicious may have clipped her in the face with her foot as she cartwheeled past her. The remainder of the match fared extremely well, as the remaining participants took the crowd from a hushed silence to a boisterous uproar with some truly phenomenal action. JBL was at his best here, quipping that the rather large Mini Abismo was in no way, shape, or form, a mini, and that Abismo weighed more than he does. Layfield was obviously having the time of his life on commentary. Hopefully, we’ll get an update on Lady Shani later in the broadcast.)
-Los Perros del Mal and Los Psycho Circus were shown entering the building before they cut to a commercial break. [c]
-Pseudo-celebrity introduction time! Seems even AAA can’t escape this stuff. First was Zuffa boxer Cain Sandoval, followed by comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias. At least I’ve heard of Fluffy and know he’s a real fan.
(2) THE LWO (Joaquin Wilde & Cruz del Toro) vs. TOKYO BAD BOYS (Kento & Takuma) vs. FRAXIOM (Nathan Frazer & Axiom) vs. LOS AMERICANOS (Rayo & Bravo) – Fatal 4-Way Elimination Tag Team Match
Axiom and Kento began the match with some chain wrestling and stiff chops. Axiom landed some dropkicks before del Toro took the tag from Kento. Bravo tagged in from Axiom and proceeded to take everyone out. Fraxion and Los Americanos attempted to outflip each other before the other teams broke up the contest.
Del Toro chopped Bravo hard, then took the tag from Wilde, who continued his partner’s handiwork. Bravo mounted a comeback, then The LWO argued over Wilde spraying his hair and ingoring his partner’s tag. They got back on the same page, with del Toro hitting a beautiful coast-to-coast on Frazer. Wilde accidentally sprayed his partner in the eyes with hairspray, leading to their elimination.
ELIMINATED: The LWO at 6:18.
Frazer took out Los Americanos with a double dropkick before getting beaten up by the Bad Boys, who got a chance to show off their excellent teamwork. Takuma hit an amazing rear springboard moonsault to the floor that has to be seen to be believed. Bravo executed a combination airplane spin and big swing on the Bad Boys that popped the crowd. After simultaneous double-dropkicks out of opposing corners, Axiom scored a pin on Kento.
ELIMINATED: Tokyo Bad Boys at 10:02.
Fraxiom and Los Americanos faced off mid-ring before getting down to Frazer and Rayo. Both men landed very stiff offense before Rayo nailed Frazer with a forearm as he flew off the top. Frazer came back with a superplex into a twisting suplex for a near fall. Axiom and Bravo took over with some very impressive chain wrestling. Frazier saved his partner from being pinned, then ate a pump kick from Bravo. Axiom hit a Spanish Fly into a DDT for what I was sure had to end the match, but Bravo kicked out. Axiom accidentally hit his partner with a missile dropkick, which led to Los Americanos capitalizing on the mistake, but still only got a two-count. All four men were laid out mid-ring as the announcers caught their breath. Rayo split Frazer’s fingers (remind you of anybody?) before they scored a double-team flying headbutt for the pin on Frazer.
WINNERS: Los Americanos at 16:30.
(Miller’s Take: My fingers ache from trying to keep up with that in real time. This was everything I thought it would be with four superbly talented teams known for their speed and agility. If you like your wrestling fast and furious, this match was for you.)
-JBL spewed out another gem after that match when he said, “The worst two words in wrestling…..follow that!” Los Americanos and Fraxiom shook hands afterwards in a show of sportsmanship. [c]
-After a lengthy commercial break, JBL announced that Maricela Pena would be the next inductee into the AAA Hall of Fame next month. The matriarch of AAA was shown seated ringside.
-A video package on the upcoming women’s fatal 4-way #1 contender’s match was shown, with all four participants cutting promos.
-Reina de Reinas Champion Flammer made her way to the Spanish announce table to witness the next match.
[HOUR TWO]
(3) ROXANNE PEREZ vs. NATTIE vs. LA HIEDRA vs. FABY APACHE – AAA Reina de Reinas #1 Contender Fatal 4-Way Match
Perez got teamed up on early and pitched out by the other three women. Nattie got disposed of, then Apache thumped Hiedra before getting thumped by Perez. Crowd favorite Perez took out Hiedra before getting yanked out of the ring by Nattie, who then tossed her into the steps. Back in the ring, Hiedra tried fending off Nattie and Perez. Apache and Nattie applied simultaneous surfboards before fighting each other. Nattie made some unintentionally comical noises while throwing fists at Apache.
Apache locked in an armbar on Hiedra, who Nattie then locked in a sharpshooter. Perez came in and broke up the whole thing. Apache locked in a reverse figure four leglock after what seemed like a miscommunication between the two. La Hiedra broke up a Perez pin on Apache. Nattie tripped up Hiedra and went for a sharpshooter that was broken by Perez. She then applied a sharpshooter on Perez, which was broken up by Apache. The action spilled to the outside for a bit before Hiedra and Perez traded pin attempts. Perez hit a shining wizard before Flammer rushed the ring with her title belt in hand. Perez ducked the belt shot, and Flammer stopped just short of nailing Hiedra. Perez, however, took advantage of the momentary pause to shove Hiedra into Flammer, knocking her out to the floor. Perez then executed Pop Rox for the win.
WINNER: Roxanne Perez at 9:22 to become the new #1 contender.
(Miller’s Take: Not much crowd reaction to this. The crowd was largely silent throughout this match, save for the popular ending that they voiced their approval of. Granted, it was a bit sloppy in spots, and Perez and Apache appeared lost at one point. The Las Vegas crowd was definitely pro-Perez.)
-After the match, Flammer glared at La Hiedra before confronting her in the ring. The members of Las Toxicas continued arguing as they made their way up the ramp. [c]
-In the back, Rey Mysterio was receiving well-wishes for his upcoming match before El Grande American approached and thanked him for everything he’s done for him and for lucha libre. He encouraged him for his match against Omos. Rey said he’d been there for the first Triplemania and reflected on his career.
-A video package was shown highlighting the Latin American Championship victory by La Parka.
(4) LA PARKA (c) vs. LAREDO KID vs. MR. IGUANA – AAA Latin American Championship Triple Threat Match
As friends La Parka and Mr. Iguana shook hands, Laredo Kid attacked them both. Iguana and Parka fought back to take out Laredo, then tangled with each other. Laredo re-entered the fray, took out Iguana, then went to work on the champ. La Parka executed an armdrag on Iguana off the ring apron and onto Laredo on the floor. Back in the ring, an irritated Iguana landed a beautiful crucifix on La Parka before getting smacked around a bit by Laredo and came back with a shining wizard for a two-count.
Laredo landed a suicide dive on the floor to Iguana that looked nasty. He climbed to the top and launched himself off the ringpost with a cannonball to the floor onto his opponents, then hit a 450 splash on Iguana for a near fall. La Parka sneaked up behind Laredo in the ring with a backstabber, followed by a beautiful dropkick for a two-count. La Parka nailed a suicide dive of his own onto Laredo, then turned his attention to Iguana in the ring.
Laredo backdropped La Parka out of the ring, then climbed to the top with Iguana. La Parka recovered, leaped up to the top rope with both men, and delivered an incredible Spanish Fly to both of them. On the floor, Iguana and La Parka got into a shoving match, which Laredo took advantage of. He held Iguana on his shoulders and turned to find La Parka perched on the top turnbuckle. The champion leaped off to execute a Doomsday Device on Iguana, then landed a twisting jackhammer on Laredo for the pin.
WINNER: La Parka at 13:05 to retain the Latin American Championship.
(Miller’s Take: Again, a very entertaining match. Being a relatively new champion, I don’t think anyone expected La Parka to drop the strap, but this was still filled with enough excitement to make you completely disregard an preconceived notions about the outcome.)
-After the match, La Parka danced with a small child dressed like him in the ring while a dejected Mr. Iguana dabbed at his eyes with La Yesca on the floor. [c]
(5) PSYCHO CIRCUS (Psycho Clown & Dave the Clown & Murder Clown) (c) vs. PERROS DEL MAL (Daga & Berto & Angel) (w/Karmen Petrovic) – AAA World Trios Championship Match
Graves announced that Panic Clown was not medically cleared to compete, so Psycho was stepping in to take his place. The match broke down early with the Perros triple-teaming Psycho. The Circus came back with some triple-teaming of their own against Daga before Los Perros took the fight to the floor. Dave took his turn getting thumped by the heel trio in the corner. They isolated Dave in their corner, much to the crowd’s disapproval.
[HOUR THREE]
Dave managed to slip in a crushing powerbomb before making the hot tag to Murder, who began living up to his namesake. He lifted both Daga and Angel onto his shoulders with a fireman’s carry that prompted a very obscure Bill Kazmeier reference from JBL. The very large Murder launched himself off the top rope onto Los Perros on the floor. El Carnicero reached over the barrier and glommed Dave from behind, then fought with Psycho down the aisle.
Daga amazingly performed a German suplex on Murder for a near fall, but the big clown fired up and began mauling Daga before executing a huge superplex. Berto and Dave took over in the ring until Petrovic hopped up on the apron to distract Dave. On the floor, Berto clotheslined Dave over the barrier while Murder fell victim to a double stomp in the ring before being pinned.
WINNERS: Los Perros del Mal at 10:43 to capture the AAA World Trios Championship.
(Miller’s Take: Los Perros del Mal have been on a roll, and they carried that momentum into this match. With El Carnicero effectively taking Psycho Clown out of the picture, it was only a matter of time before the remaining two clowns were overwhelmed.) [c]
-A video package was shown of the events leading up to tonight’s match, with Omos being suspended by GM Rey Mysterio for putting his hands on him. AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio refused to defend his title against El Grande Americano with Omos being suspended. After the suspended Omos bought a ticket and stood ringside to taunt Mysterio, the GM made a match between himself and Omos, with the stipulation being that Omos would be reinstated if he beats him. If Mysterio wins, Omos will never return to AAA.
(6) OMOS (w/Dominik Mysterio & Dorian Roldan) vs. REY MYSTERIO (w/El Grande Americano)
This was a true David and Goliath story, with the top of Mysterio’s head barely reaching the midsection of the towering Omos. I can’t emphasize the size differential enough. Mysterio obviously used his speed and agility to avoid the clutches of the Nigerian colossus. The GM landed some kicks that annoyed Omos a bit, then got clobbered. Omos dug his knee into Mysterio’s spine before Rey escaped the ring and continued the game of cat and mouse until getting caught and broken over the knee of Omos like a twig being snapped. He pressed Rey over his head on the floor in front of Mysterio’s wife before launching him back into the ring.
Omos slowed the pace down while he methodically beat down the legendary luchador. He lifted Mysterio into a crushing bearhug as if he were holding a small child. Mysterio kicked out of an arrogant one-footed pin by Omos, but continued to get beaten on, much to Dominik’s approval. Mysterio went to the eyes, then began bouncing off Omos until the giant fell into the ropes and tied himself up. The GM went to work on Omos before the referee tried to free him.
With the referee dealing with Omos, Dirty Dom dragged his dad out of the ring, which prompted El Grande Americano to retaliate. Rey slipped in a chair shot to the head of the giant while the referee was watching Americano and Dom, which allowed Rey to take over with a series of 619s, followed by a big splash for a two-count. Dom and Americano brawled on the outside, with Dom driving his challenger for tomorrow night throat-first into a chair. Omos delivered a chokeslam mid-ring to win the match and his reinstatement.
WINNER: Omos at 12:39 to win his reinstatement.
(Miller’s Take: Anytime you have a stipulation of “never again”, you pretty much know the outcome. This wasn’t so much about who would win as it was about how it would play out. Omos played whack-a-mole with Mysterio throughout the match, save for the hope spot at the end. Ultimately, the shenanigans on the outside and the power of the Nigerian giant were too much for the Hall of Famer to overcome.)
-After the match, an angry Omos continued to beat on Mysterio for a bit while Dominik smacked Americano with a chair on the outside. El Ojo slowly walked to the back, having won the battle on the first night of Triplemania. Medical personnel placed Mysterio on a backboard before Omos decided he hadn’t had enough fun, and returned to ringside to brutalize the GM a little more. He lifted Mysterio, who was still strapped to the backboard, and chokeslammed him through the announce desk to close Night One.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Wow, let me catch my breath here. Spectacular opening night of Triplemania! The crowd was hot for everything, with the notable exception of the women’s fatal four-way match. The only thing I’ve heard about the injury to and condition of Lady Shani is that she’s okay, but that was definitely a concern at the beginning of the show. Just an all around super night of lucha libre to kick off Triplemania. See you for Night Two!
