20 YEARS AGO – ROH LIVE EVENT REPORT (9/15/2006): Austin Aries vs. Davey Richards, Nigel vs. Daniels, Samoa Joe vs. Strong, plus Kenta, Briscoes, Claudio, Cabana

These results are per Torch Columnist Sean Radican, who attended tonight’s event. The event was said to be held outside in a tent, with it pouring rain throughout most of the evening. The crowd was estimated at 450-500. The rain may have kept a lot of general admission people from coming.

(1) The Ring Crew Express (Dunn & Marcos) defeated ROH students Rhett Titus & Pelle Primeau. The finish came when Marcos pinned Titus with a senton.

After the match, Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli came out through the crowd. They said they were the best tag team in the world, and challenged Dunn and Marcos to a match.

(2) Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli defeated Dunn & Marcos. The finish came when Hero pinned Marcos after a powerbomb. Hero and Castagnoli had their Chikara belts with them, and the fans chanted “plastic belts” at them.

(3) Jack Evans defeated Ricky Reyes, Colt Cabana, and Jimmy Jacobs in a four corner survival match. The finish came when Evans pinned Jacobs after a 450 legdrop. Before the match, Cabana had ring announcer Bobby Cruz announce that he (Cabana) and Lacey did not get to third base with each other in the bushes before the show. Jacobs was really upset by this and Cabana basically had fun at his expense throughout the match. Evans hit some spectacular high flying moves, as is usually the case with him.

(4) Nigel McGuinness defeated Christopher Daniels. Lots of mat based back and forth action in this one. McGuinness hit the Tower of London for the finish. Said to be a really good match. McGuinness takes on Marufuji tomorrow night in Manhattan with the GHC title on the line.

It was announced that they would be returning to East Windsor on December 22.

Bobby Cruz brought out the NOAH guys, and Danielson came out and said he would beat the crap out of all of them if he had to. He faces KENTA tomorrow night in Manhattan for the ROH title.

(5) Austin Aries defeated Davey Richards. The match was said to be really stiff, with both guys basically beating the crap out of each other for 20 minutes. Aries kicked Richards as hard as he could in the face and then gave him a brainbuster, but Richards kicked out of the pin attempt. They went back and forth for awhile, including hitting some stiff forearms on each other. Aries gave him another kick of death/brainbuster combination for the victory. Radican said he would rate the match at about 3 and 3/4 stars.

There was a brief intermission.

(6) Delirious defeated Shane Hagadorn. Delirious managed to get the victory with a modified cobra clutch.

(7) Samoa Joe defeated Roderick Strong. This was said to be an incredible match. There was a feeling out process at first, and then they exchanged chops back and forth. They teased Strong hitting his backbreakers several times throughout the match, and Joe would escape each time until Strong finally hit one. Strong basically threw every move in his arsenal at Joe. In one cool spot, Strong lifted up Joe like he was picking up a paper clip for a suplex. Strong locked in his submission move, but Joe escaped. They ended up fighting on the top rope and Strong went for a superplex, but Joe cut him off with a slap to the face. Joe then hit a top rope Island Driver for the victory. Radican would rate the match at about 4 1/4 stars.

(8) Kenta & Marufuji defeated The Briscoes. This was said to be another incredible match. There was plenty of back and forth action in this one, with one team holding the advantage for awhile, and then the other team regaining the momentum and holding the advantage for a period of time. All four guys hit a series of moves on each other. Fans were going crazy for all of this, with lots of “ROH” chants and the like. KENTA and Marufuji isolated Mark in the ring and hit stereo superkicks and stereo roundhouse kicks to the face. KENTA made the cover but Jay came in out of nowhere to make the save at the last possible moment. Jay and Marufuji ended up brawling on the outside while KENTA hit the go to sleep on Mark in the ring for the finish. There were plenty of “ROH” and “NOAH” chants afterwards.

And then people got the heck out of there because of all the rain. It was said to be a really good show, with the last two matches being among the best last two matches that Radican said he’s ever seen.
