(1) ANDRADE EL IDOLO vs. PAC (w/Marina Shafir) – AEW National Title match
They stared each other down and the crowd fell silent. It built tension but was also awkward. Fans chanted, “How you know? He’s a bastard!” They each tested each other with various signature moves early. They fought at ringside a few minutes in. Andrade had Pac in the corner. Rather than try to win the match and keep his title, he played to the crowd and teased taking off his pants. Pac recovered and overhead tossed Andrade hard into the corner. Fans, in the spirit of the pre-show comedy match, chanted, “Take your pants off!” (There’s no reason to expect fans to take the match seriously at this point.)
Andrade made a comeback and kipped up. He again began to take off his pants. Pac recovered and attacked him. Excalibur said he should be keeping focused. Andrade gave Pac three unreleased vertical suplexes, then clotheslined Pac out of the ring. Andrade, for a third time, went to his buckle and removed his pants. He had trouble getting them past his boots. Some fans cheered. After all that, Andrade landed a leaping tornado dive onto Pac at ringside and landed it. Andrade then strutted to a woman in the front row who flirted back with him. They took a selfie. Shafir came up behind the woman and put her in a sleeper. Pac then attacked Andrade. He leaped off the top rope with a moonsault onto Andrade.
Pac then landed a 450 splash in the ring for a near fall. Andrade made a comeback. Shafir stood on the ring apron. Andrade let himself get distracted for like 20 seconds by that. Pac recovered and rallied with a reverse huracanrana and then applied a Brutalizer, but Andrade leveraged Pac’s shoulders down for a three count.
WINNER: Andrade in 18:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: Andrade playing into removing his pants at the expense of trying to defend his title successfully took me out of the match, no matter what else they did that was strong. The ringside selfie spot in the midst of a title match was also stupid. And then Andrade being completely needlessly preoccupied by Shafir and almost losing because of it made me resent the finish seconds later where he managed to win despite that. I thought this had potential to be great, and it was just sports entertainment silliness overshadowing the sense of sports competition throughout.)
(2) DARBY ALLIN & STEVEN BORDEN vs. KYLE FLETCHER & KEVIN KNIGHT (w/Don Callis)
A fan in the aisle seat held up a sign that said, “TKO fears TK.” Callis joined in on commentary. The bell rang 35 minutes into the hour. Fletcher asked for Borden after the bell rang, so Darby tagged in Borden. They engaged in a collar-and-elbow. Fans chanted, “F—, Don Callis!” Borden threw some big roundhouse punches. Darby knocked an interfering Knight to ringside. Darby and Borden stood together after clearing the ring. Schiavone said Borden said training for pro wrestling was harder than football because he has to keep up with Darby and deal with feedback from his father. Taz emphasized that pro wrestling is unlike anything else.
Darby tagged in. He was focused on Knight, so Fletcher jumped him. Fletcher powerbombed Darby at ringside as a counter to a huracanrana attempt. FLetcher stood on the steps and flexed his arms as Darby writhed in pain at ringside. Fletcher darted Darby into the middle turnbuckle in the ring. The ref didn’t see Darby tag in Borden and disallowed it. Fletcher laughed. Borden tagged in a minute later and hit rapid-fire moves on both Knight and Fletcher. When he dove at Fletcher with a Stinger Splash, Fletcher moved and Borden overshot to the floor. Knight and Fletcher threw Borden into the ringside barricade next. Darby dove at Fletcher and they both hit the announce desk. Knight leaped at Darby at ringside.
Borden and Knight each leaped off top turnbuckles and collided. They immediately called for the doctor. They checked on him. They called for the bell to stop the match. Fletcher asked Callis, “What happened?” He smiled and gloated. Callis jumped up and down excitedly. Borden didn’t move and fans were concerned. They replayed the landing and his head landed hard and his arm flexed resembling a concussion. Taz said you can’t fault the medical team for calling off the match. Callis looked concerned on teh ramp as Knight and Fletcher celebrated.
WINNER: Match Stopped Due To Medical.
-They went to the announcers and stopped showing the ring. As Taz and Excalibur discussed the situation, Schiavone looked at the ring and seemed seriously concerned. The crowd was silent. Fans stood and applauded. The announcers seemed shaken. Excalibur said Borden was now leaving the ringside area. Excalibur complimented the medical team for the call. He said it was an unpopular opinion. (Why did he think it was “an unpopular opinion?” I can’t imagine anyone was upset by the decision.) Excalibur’s voice was trembling a bit as he said they had to transition awkwardly to previewing the next match.
(Keller’s Analysis: That was scary and honestly brought me back to how everyone acted after Owen Hart fell from the catwalk and died. You could tell the announcers and the fans behind them who were visible were as concerned as anyone gets in pro wrestling for injuries. The fact that they didn’t go back to the ring to show Borden getting up to leave made it seem even more ominous.)
-A promo segment aired with Britt Baker and Persephone.
(3) PERSEPHONE (w/Britt Baker) vs. DANI LUNA – TBS Title match
When Luna went for a German suplex from the ring apron, Baker held Persephone’s boot to prevent it. Persephone then gave Luna a Crucifix bomb for the win. Baker was a pest at ringside throughout.
WINNER: Persephone in 14:00 to retain the TBS Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: It was tough to get engaged with the match after the situation with Borden. It’s so rare that a wrestling company doesn’t show a wrestler being helped out of the ring, even on a stretcher. The crowd seemed disengaged and shaken up.)
(4) KAZUCHIKA OKADA vs. TOMMASO CIAMPA – AEW International Title
Ciampa kissed his eight year old daughter at ringside from the front row. (I hope she didn’t have to watch what happened to Borden before watching her father wrestle 20 minutes later.) They stayed in first gear early, with Okada smugly gloating when he got in any offense. They exchanged strikes mid-ring. When Ciampa got the better of him, Okada dropped to ringside to regroup. He made his way slowly into the ring.
Okada eventually taunted Ciampa’s daughter at ringside and gave her the middle finger gesture. The girl looked at her mom wide-eyed, then fired back at Okada with double middle-fingers. Ciampa then took over and tossed Okada around at ringside. Back in the ring, he landed Angel’s Wings for a two count.
Ciampa chopped Okada on the top turnbuckle and then set up a Project Ciampa. Okada broke free and raked Ciampa’s eyes. DOn Callis left the commentary table and yelled at the ref on the ring apron. Okada then produced a screw driver and laughed. When he leaped at Ciampa, Ciampa met him with a flying knee to the chin. Okada dropped the screwdriver.
Ciampa rallied and scored another near fall. Fans chanted “AEW! AEW!” Ciampa played to the crowd with Okada on his knees. He lifted Okada and went for a Rainmaker. Okada blocked it. Ciampa elbowed him. Okada rolled up Ciampa for a two count and then hit a short-arm lariat. Ciampa ducked another. Okada dropkicked Ciampa and then gave him a tilt-a-whirl slam followed by The Rainmaker for the win. They cut to Ciampa’s daughter soaking up the loss. Okada snickered at Ciampa’s daughter. She stuck her tongue out at him.
WINNER: Okada to retain the AEW International Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: The crowd seemed to get a kick out of it, but I’m not a fan of kids that young getting directly involved in wrestling angles, even if played for mostly comedy like this and she played her role really well. As for the match, it was very good and the crowd was solidly behind Ciampa, but also enjoyed Okada’s comedic heel actions.)
-They went to ringside. Tony Schiavone said Tony Khan has given him information that Borden is conscious and responsive and has arrived at the hospital for evaluation. He said they heard he is being tended to by a doctor. Taz said, “He’s tough as hell and he’ll get through it.” Fans stood and applauded, presumably the update
(5) THE BRAWLING BIRDS (Jamie Hayter & Alex Windsor) vs. DIVINE DOMINION (Lena Kross & Megan Bayne)
Nigel McGuinness replaced Taz on commentary. They were using kendo sticks, chairs, and tables in the early minutes. Hayter was powerbombed through a table at ringside. Windsor bled from her forehead. Kross and Bayne tried to smash head between two chairs, but she ducked so the chairs crashed into each other. Hayter then rallied with cane shots. Windsor brought a trash can into the ring and bashed Kross and Bayne with it.
All four squared off and swung wildly at each other. All four were down and slow to get up. They went back to brawling with the apparatus. They incorporated a guard rail leaning in the corner as a landing pad for spots. Hayter and Windsor suplexed ross onto the barricade in the corner.
Kross and Bayne slammed Windsor onto two chairs and scored a near fall, broken up by Hayter. Bayne and Kross then revealed a barbed wire board at ringside and slid it into the ring. Fans chanted, “You sick f—!” Kross poured a bag of thumb tacks onto the canvas. Hayter interupted by hitting Kross with a fist wrapped with a chain and then clotheslined Kross onto the tacks and Windsor scored a three count.
WINNERS: Brawling Birds to retain the AEW Tag Team Titles.
-A commercial announced that Nov. 4 will feature a “Blood & Guts” Dynamite in Jacksonville, Fla.at the Veterans Memorial Arena.
-They went to the announcers at ringside. This time Schiavone had a live mic so the crowd could hear. He said Borden has been responsive and was talking with the doctors about the match. He said he had a CAT scan and if they get another update, they’ll pass it along. Fans chanted, “Steve! Steve!”
(6) THE NEW LEVEL (Austin Creed & Kofi) & SWERVE STRICKLAND (w/Prince Nana) vs. BANDIDO & BRODY KING & “HANGMAN” ADAM PAGE – AEW Trios Title match
The bell rang 9 minutes into the second hour of the PPV portion. Kofi and Bandido had an early exchange that led to a respectful bow by each and cheers and applause by fans. Creed then tagged in against Brody King. Fans loudly chanted “F— Ice!” (Chanting is truly great. But VOTE TOO!) Creed tried to knock Brody down, but Brody barely budged. Fans chanted “New! Le-vel!” Brody took Creed down. Hangman took a shot at Creed at ringside and then Brody put him on a chair and charged at him with a crossbody into the barricade.
Hangman tagged in officially at 5:00. Creed shoved Hangman into his corner and chopped his chest. The announcers pointed out that Nana was trying to calm down Swerve at ringside
