SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)...

In a stunning development, Brock Lesnar is close to signing with UFC to be part of the milestone UFC 200 event in July, reports MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani.

Lesnar, who is under contract to WWE, is reportedly close to working out details on a return to UFC.

Lesnar has not appeared on WWE television since WrestleMania in April, and he is not expected back until this summer. UFC 200 takes place July 9 in Las Vegas.

The UFC 200 card has some good fights, but not the mega-super-huge fight that Brock Lesnar would produce after retiring from UFC at the end of 2011 to return to WWE.

If Lesnar, UFC, and presumably WWE work out a deal, the next question is who the right opponent would be for Lesnar after nearly five years away from the octagon.

Lesnar even noted in an interview on ESPN SportsCenter last year when he re-signed with WWE over UFC that he did not feel he as mentally prepared to fight again.

“I felt physically great, but something was lacking mentally,” Lesnar said about his UFC training. Lesnar said he decided that it was not worth the training at this stage of his life to fight again, despite the competitor inside him wanting to fix his last UFC loss.

“I am officially closing the door on MMA,” Lesnar said as ESPN flashed a headline on the screen reading: “Brock Lesnar rules out returning to MMA. Will remain with WWE.”

In this case, it’s the old WWE adage of “never say never,” this time on Lesnar potentially returning to UFC for a marquee fight in-between WWE stints.
