SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)...

Samoa Joe suffered a foot injury in his match last night on Raw against Rhyno. “During his match, [Samoa Joe] felt a pop at the bottom of his [right] foot,” WWE Physician Chris Amann said in a WWE.com report. “We took a look and believe he has a plantar fascia rupture, which is a thick tissue rupture under the foot. We will get an MRI to confirm. Treatment includes a period of immobilization in a boot with crutches and platelet rich plasma injections.”

No details were provided on how much ring time Joe could miss, but Runner’s World says the typical time to heal from this injury is 12 weeks, which would take Joe out of the Royal Rumble and also out of a possible February TV feud with Cena on Raw.

AnkleFootMD.com says months might be needed before returning to the same intense activity that caused the injury in the first place.

The good news is that even if you are diagnosed with a full or partial tear, you probably won’t need surgery, unless another problematic issue is detected. The general care for a ruptured plantar fascia is a heavy dose of rest, non-weight bearing, and over-the-counter pain/anti-inflammatory medications. Depending on the severity of the injury, you’ll need to avoid full weight-bearing for days or weeks. If you suffer a full rupture, you may be able to bear weight on the foot after a few weeks, but it could be months before you’re ready to return to intense activities, like the one that caused the fascia to rupture in the first place.

Keller’s Analysis: This is just terrible timing for Joe and WWE in general. He’s been heating up, and after already missing some ring time with an injury, this runs the risk – fair or not – of giving Joe a rep for being injury prone. At age 38, carrying the weight on his build that he does, and wrestling the style that he wrestles, with the cumulative effects of big hard-hitting matches dating back 18 years to his start, Vince McMahon might begin to question whether he should invest to heavily in Joe. If the tear is minor or the initial diagnosis is more severe than the actual injury, Joe could be back in time to perhaps work limited physical activity in the Rumble match in a few weeks.
