3/10 WWE in Oshawa, Ont.: Takeaway from first WWE main roster event in 20 years, Seth & Balor & Reigns vs. Miz & Miztourage

Tonight I attended my first WWE main roster event in 20 years.  I’ve been to NXT and ROH shows in recent years but the last time I saw a WWE house show I’m pretty sure The Smoking Gunns were on the card.  Also Goldust.  Some things don’t change.

(1) Braun Strowman defeated Elias. Elias opened the show with his usual banter and singing.  When he sang about the stupid parents in the crowd and their “stupid kids” the boos got pretty loud.  This was a pretty short match that ended with a Strowman power slam.  After the match he hit a second to the crowd’s satisfaction.

(2) Heath Slater & Rhyno defeated The Revival. Seventeen years later and Rhyno’s still getting “ECW” chants.  Once the match started, a “e want tables” chant began, but Rhyno was able to switch the crowd into chanting “He’s got kids!” for Slater instead.  In the end, Slater hit an axe kick on Dawson for the win.  This was the only outcome of the night that was really unexpected.

(3) “Woken” Matt Hardy defeated Goldust. Goldust cut a promo before the match.  He talked about last week’s TV loss to John Cena in the tone of an impeding retirement before turning heel and blaming it on us fans letting him down.  Hardy hit the Twist of Fate for the victory.

(4) Cedric Alexander defeated TJP. As the cruiserweights made their entrance, a significant number of people headed for the bathrooms but people became invested as the match went on.  There were dueling chants at one point and TJP got a surprising amount of crowd support considering how he’s been portrayed on TV.  This match got the only “This is awesome!” chant of the night.  Alexander eventually won with the lumbar check.

(5) The Bar defeated Gallows & Anderson to retain the Raw Tag Team Championship. The only title match of the night and the only heel victory.  Significant Marty Scurll-style “too sweet, woop woop” chants for Gallows & Anderson.  Sheamus hit the Brogue Kick on Karl Anderson to end it.

Intermission.

(6) Apollo (w/Dana Brooke) defeated Curt Hawkins. Curt Hawkins lost, surprising no one.

(7) Sasha Banks defeated Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss (w/Mickie James) by DQ. I believe this was a non-title match; not that it matters.  After a couple minutes of action, Banks locked in the Banks Statement and James tackled her for the DQ.  Bayley ran out for the save and Raw GM Kurt Angle somehow telepathically told the ring announcer that he was turning it into a tag match.

(8) Bayley & Sasha Banks defeated Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss & Mickie James. Bayley hit the Bayley To Belly on Bliss and pinned her while Banks had James locked in the Banks Statement.  Post-match Bayley and Banks left separately to sell the fracturing of their friendship.

(9) Finn Bálor & Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns defeated Intercontinental Champion The Miz & The Miztourage (Bo Dallas & Curtis Axel). If you want to know Vince McMahon’s type, the main event featured six white guys with dark hair wearing black gear.  Loud “too sweet” chants again before the bell.  In the end, Axel took a Curb Stomp and Coup de Grâce while Reigns speared Miz for the pin.

After the event, the staff found a kid in the crowd who had dressed in a full Demon costume and made a Bálor sign.  They invited him into the ring to meet the winning trio and pose with Finn to his music.

Wrestlers with merch for sale included Elias, Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Bálor, Matt Hardy, and Cena. Bliss and Ronda Rousey were the only women with shirts, though Banks had plastic faux sunglasses and Bayley had some snap bracelets.
