The Road to Wrestlemania Tour Live from the Eagle Bank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.  This is a 10,000-seat building and there were about 4,000-4,500 fans in attendance, including lots of families as you might expect.  This was a good crowd which was into most of the things during the evening.

Prior to the show there was a Twitter poll asking which WrestleMania match the fans would like to see video of.  Choices were Macho King vs. Ultimate Warrior from WM VII, Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle from WM 21, and the Women’s Title match from WM 32.  Michaels vs. Angle won the poll.  Sadly, Macho and Warrior got zero votes.  There were also several videos with clips from this past week’s TV, including Ronda Rousey and Byron hyping up the crowd about WrestleMania coming up in two weeks.

Byron Saxton was our Host/Ring Announcer/Timekeeper for the evening.

(1) Bobby Roode defeated Jinder Mahal (w/Samil Singh).  This was a good match, probably the best wrestling match on the show.  Crowd was into this one and Jinder has the most heel heat of the night.  Roode won with the Glorious DDT.

(2) Sin Cara & The Ascension defeated Mike Kanellis & Primo & Mojo Rawley. Sin Cara and the Ascension were the faces in this one.  Nice to see Mike back in the ring.  No Maria, but she was well represented on the back of his jacket.  Comedy early where they did a “Olé” bullfighting spot with Kanellis chasing his jacket.  Strange to see big Konnor playing the face in peril role, but it made Mojo look strong with his offense.  Sin Cara got the hot tag and the victory for his team.

(3) The Usos beat The Bludgeon Brothers via DQ to retain the Smackdown Tag Titles. The Usos were over pretty well with this crowd.  Decent match that ended in DQ when Uso went for a dive but Harper and Rowan hit him with the stairs from the outside.

Byron was plugging some merchandise when Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens came out through the crowd and cut a promo on Daniel Bryan saying he was just as bad as Shane McMahon.  The crowd went nuts for these two. Nice to see the continuity from TV as they were fired and it played as if they were not supposed to be there. They were cut off by Shinsuke Nakamura’s music and left.

(4) Shinsuke Nakamura beat Baron Corbin. Good match between these two.  Nakamura got a clean win after the Kinshasa.

Intermission

(5) Tyler Breeze beat Tye Dillinger. There was a brief Fashion Files clip which led to this match, a short comedy match.  There was a spot where Tye was chasing Fandango around the ring and Tyler was chasing him.  Those two got back in the ring and Fandango kept doing laps around the ring.  Breeze won with a roll up.

(6) Naomi & Becky Lynch beat Carmella & Lana (w/Natalya). “Rusev Day” chants for Lana.  Back and forth match that saw Becky Lynch get the win with the disarmer on Lana.

(7) The New Day & A.J. Styles beat Rusev & Aiden English & Shelton Benjamin & Chad Gable. There were dueling “A.J. Styles” and “Rusev Day” chants.  The crowd was into this one and there was a lot of dancing from all parties.  Styles was in to start the match and then at the end did his signature moves on all members of the other team and then pinned English with the Phenomenal Forearm.  After the match, New Day and Styles celebrated and threw pancakes into the crowd and danced.

FINAL THOUGHTS: This was a fun show first time I got to see guys like Styles and Nakamura in person. I was surprised there was no Charlotte on the show and wonder if Natalya being in the corner instead of a match was some type of change in plans. No return date was announced, but the past couple of years they have done December shows in Fairfax.  Next show in this building will be the ROH TV taping on June 30.
