[HOUR ONE]

-They opened with Excalibur introducing the show as they panned the audience holding up signs and cheering. They hyped upcoming matches and then threw to a video package previewing the MJF vs. Kevin Knight match including the set-up on Collision last Saturday.

(1) MJF vs. “THE JET” KEVIN KNIGHT – AEW World Heavyweight Title match

“Speedball” Mike Bailey accompanied Knight onto the stage. Justin Roberts did formal ring introductions. MJF walked over and pie-faced Knight during ring introductions. The ref held Knight back. The bell rang 5 minutes into the hour. When Knight had MJF backed into a corner, the ref forced a separation. MJF punched Knight. Schiavone praised the tactic by the heel that was inherently designed to get heel heat. “That was a good move,” he said. “Take advantage of that if you can.” (MJF should pull him aside and politely ask him to not take a fire extinguisher to the heel heat he is attempting to get through his tactics.)

MJF rammed his crotch into Knight’s face as Knight was sitting up mid-ring. Knight stood and threw a barrage of punches at MJF after MJF was done gloating. MJF avoided a Knight dive into the corner at 6:00. Knight went back on the attack including a turning splash for a two count at 8:00. When Knight climbed to the top rope, MJF rolled to ringside. Knight landed a running flip dive onto MJF.

Knight thwarted an MJF comeback and landed a DDT for a two count. MJF avoided a charging Knight in the corner and kicked him, followed by a face planted him for a two count. They went into a series of leverage near falls with reversals. Knight landed a running leaping lariat to MJF at ringside. With both down, they cut to a shorter-than-usual 90 second double-box break. Excalibur said there were limited commercial interruptions. [c/db]

During the break, MJF took over and rammed Knight into the ringside stairs. Knight leaped off the ringside barricade and landed on MJF after the break. Knight favored his ribs. MJF knocked Knight off balance on the top rope and set up a superplex. Knight blocked it and knocked MJF upside down in the corner. Knight tucked MJF’s boot to create a greater sense he was helpless. He the hit a Coast-to-Coast dropkick as MJF hung upside down. Knight landed a UFO splash, but MJF kicked the ref from his back. Knight covered MJF, and the fans counted well past three. The ref recovered enough to count slowly to two before MJF kicked out. Excalibur said MJF will claim it was incidental contact.

Knight went for another UFO Splash, but MJF lifted his knees. MJF then hit the Heat Seeker for the win.

WINNER: MJF in 18:00 to retain the AEW World Title.

(Keller’s Analysis: Really good, straight forward match that relied on doing the fundamentals really well to tell a story with clear-cut characters. Some well-executed highspots and near falls, but neither wrestler seems like they were “chasing stars” or seeking “This is awesome!” chants.)

-As MJF was celebrating, he shoved the ref out of the ring. Schiavone said there should be fines for that. (At least Schiavone didn’t praise that.) “Hangman” Adam Page stepped out before MJF could punch Knight with his Dynamite Diamond Ring. Speedball then showed up behind MJF and delivered a karate side kick to MJF’s chin. MJF bumped to the floor. Speedball checked on Knight.

(2) ORANGE CASSIDY & DARBY ALLIN vs. “WAR READY” GABE KIDD & CLARK CONNORS

Cassidy and Darby came out first. (If Gabe is “War Ready,” I’m sure that can be accommodated and tested given what’s going on in the world.) All four brawled at ringside before the bell when Darby and Cassidy attacked Kidd and Connors as they came onto the stage. (Makes sense given the backstory to this match.)

Gabe shoved the ringside steps against the time keeper’s area. Cassidy and Darby took back control. Darby charged at Connors and dropkicked him hard into the security barricade (which Excalibur found hilarious). Connors side-stepped a charging Darby and then Connors checked him hard into the barricade. Gabe and Cassidy battled at ringside. Connors speared Cassidy off the ringside barricade and through the time keeper’s table. “Holy shit!” chanted the fans.

Gabe clotheslined Darby in the ring right after the bell rang to officially start the match 32 minutes into the hour. He followed up with a fisherman’s buster. As Gabe and Connors gloated, they cut to a double-box break at 1:00. [c/db]

Back from the break, Darby and Connors were battling. Four-way action broke out. Gabe shoved Darby over the top rope and Darby took one of the worst bumps onto his head on the ring apron you’ll ever. Excalibur and Schiavone barely sold it the first time or on slo-mo replay. (Was that landing something I just imagined? My god. They treated it like a regular dive to ringside or something like that.) Darby appeared fine afterward, thankfully after initially holding his head and neck in pain.

Cassidy tagged in at 5:00. Excalibur wondered what condition he was in after the crash through the table earlier. He hit a series of moves against both Gabe and Connors. Cassidy landed a Beach Break on Connors. Gabe interrupted the count and Connors lifted his right shoulder. Gabe gave Cassidy a stiff clothesline to the chest. Darby caught Gabe with a Code Red and then Connors with a stunner. Darby landed a Coffin Drop on both opponents at ringside. Cassidy hit Connors with an Orange Punch for the clean win.

WINNERS: Cassidy & Darby in 7:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: There was more to the match than the “official” seven minutes. A heck of a two-match start to the show.)

-David Finlay attacked Cassidy and Darby afterward. Excalibur said he has been affiliated with Connors and Gabe in New Japan. Finlay stacked Cassidy onto Darby after a three-on-two beatdown and stood over them. Excalibur said, “I never thought I would see it.” (Why would he? It’s such a oddly specific thing to think you would ever wonder if you’d see.)

-Renee Paquette interviewed Bandido and Andrade backstage about facing each other at Revolution. Bandido talked about how excited he was to face him. Andrade said in a demeaning, condescending tone that he couldn’t tell if he wanted to fight or have a selfie. Andrade took out of his phone as if to take a selfie, but then said he was getting a call and walked away.

(3) THE BRAWLING BIRDS (Jamie Hayter & Alex Windsor) vs. THE IINSPIRATION (Jessica McCay & Cassie Lee)

The Birds came out first. As The IInspiration came out for their Dynamite debut, an inset soundbite aired with them. They introduced themselves. They danced to their theme in the ring. The bell rang 45 minutes into the hour. The Birds went on the attack in four-way action. They clotheslined one onto the other and scored a double pin that the ref for some reason counted despite two of them being illegally in the ring. Oh well. Excalibur called it “a lop-side victory.”

WINNERS: The Birds in 2:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: For those worried that AEW would overpush The IInspiration, nope. At least not out of the gate.) [c]

(4) “HANGMAN” ADAM PAGE vs. MARTY SNOW

Marty Snow looked confident as Hangman entered the ring and he was introduced. He charged and ate a Hangman boot. Hangman then hit the Buckshot Lariat for the win.

WINNER: Hangman in 10 seconds.

(Keller’s Analysis: My dream of occasional squash matches being brought back has been realized. It’s a good way to get over signature moves and change up the cadence of the show. Occasionally, it can create a 1-2-3 Kid or Goldberg moment.)

-Hangman spoke afterward toward MJF. He said he has no conscience in a Texas Death match. He vowed to “rip you, tear you, and only let you lie when I am finished with you.” He said MJF showed he was itching to punch someone with the diamond ring. He told him to slip it back on his pinkie and “get your dumb ass out here now and show me the good it’ll do you at Revolution.”

MJF walked out and complained about having to be “in this C-town El Paso.” He said he just whipped “your boy Kevin Knight’s ass.” He said it’s bad enough he has to listen to him yap at next week’s press conference. Kyle Fletcher, Mark Davis, and Kazuchika Okada attacked Hangman from behind. MJF laughed. Speedball ran out with a chair in hand. Knight also ran out for the save. Don Callis’s theme played.

Callis walked out with Lance Archer, smiling broadly. Fans chanted “F— Don Callis!” He said he had something important to say. He said he saw three millennial punks in the ring. He said Knight is going after Okada’s International belt and Speedball is going after Fletcher’s TNT Title. He said he hates a greedy guy. He asked fans to be quiet so he could talk. Fans booed. He said he heard them say on Collision that they’d defend the Trios Titles anytime, anyplace. Callis suggested that main event Dynamite tonight.

-They went to Excalibur and Schiavone at ringside. They confirmed Tony Khan made the match official.

[HOUR TWO]

-A sitdown interview aired with Renee at a table with The Young Bucks with Brandon Cutler. FTR and Stokely Hathaway showed up late. Cash said they wanted to end the feud at Revolution. Nick Jackson called them out for going after their mom and dad. Cash called it self-defense. Nick said it’ll be revenge for their family at the PPV. Matt said it’s taking everything in their souls not to kick the shit out of them right now. He said they want to do it in front of their family at Revolution. Cash said he hopes their family is there so they can teach them another lesson. When the Bucks stood, FTR said since they can’t handle this professionally, so they’ll show themselves out. Dax said they’re so lucky for the no contact stipulation. Dax punched Cutler, noting the clause didn’t include him. The Bucks checked on Cutler.

(5) JON MOXLEY vs. HECHICERO – AEW Continental Title Eliminator match

Marina Shafir led Moxley through the entrance tunnel. Daniel Garcia and Wheeler Yuta followed behind Mox. Excalibur hyped the Moxley vs. Konosuke Takeshita match at Revolution. They went to Renee at ringside who talked about what Callis told her about getting Takeshita ready to face Moxley. The bell rang 8 minutes into the hour. They cut to a break at 5:00. [c]

After several minutes of back and forth action, Hechicero scored a near fall at 13:00 after rolling Mox into a pinning position with his legs. Moxley got up and landed a stomp and then a knee strike followed by a Death Rider for the win.

WINNER: Moxley in 14:00.

-As Mox was celebrating his win and heading to the back, Takeshita stepped out and eyed him from the ring. Mox noticed and stared back.

-Excalibur plugged the Trios Title match. [c]

-Brody King made his entrance. He called out Swerve and said he knows he is the most dangerous man in AEW. He called him out so he could prove it tonight. Prince Nana stepped out, cackling. He asked if he’s sure he wants to “go down that rabbit hole with the man himself.” Brody told him to bring his ass out there. Swerve’s music played.

Swerve jumped Brody from behind. He hit Brody with a House Call kick. He hung him with a chain over the top rope and then told him he had a message to send to him and all AEW wrestlers. He said there’s a difference between saying you’re the most dangerous man and doing it. He said he’d see him at Revolution. Bandido ran out for the save. Excalibur said Brody’s face was turning purple. Fans at ringside chanted “Swerve!” Swerve didn’t play to the crowd and turned and left.

(Keller’s Analysis: Swerve resisted acting a way to draw cheers this week, unlike last week.)

-Backstage, the Death Riders were gathered. Garcia asked if the Callis Family were “stupid or dumb.” Yuta pulled off his hood and yelled, “Take a look, okay!” He said losing his hair was the darkest day of his career. He complained about fans screaming mean, hurtful things to him, but his Death Rider cohorts have his back. Shafir told Toni Storm she better shoot from the hip and make her laugh. Mox said there is no team like them willing to go as far and as hard as them. He said he and Takeshita will go as long as it takes and see it through the very end.

(6) THEKLA vs. THUNDER ROSA – AEW Women’s Title match

The bell rang 38 minutes into the hour. They fought to the floor at 2:00. Rosa used a fan at ringside to help balance her on the ringside barricade before leaping onto Thekla. She played to the crowd, which gave Thekla a chance to recover and kick her in the head. Thekla then leaped off the ring apron with a double-stomp onto her back. They cut to a double-box break at 3:00. [c/db]

Thekla had Rosa grounded after the break. Rosa fought out of it, but Thekla retook control. They exchanged strikes mid-ring. Rosa hit a Stunner. Rosa rallied. They battled on the top rope. Thekla suplexed Rosa to the mat and then hung upside down afterward before sitting up. Thekla speared her and scored a two count, but lifted Rosa’s shoulders. Schiavone said that was a big mistake. Rosa landed a cutter and then a Fire Thunder Driver for a near fall at 10:00.

Rosa charged, but Thekla bridged back to avoid her and then speared her. She followed with two stomps and a three count.

WINNER: Thekla in 11:00 to retain the AEW Women’s Title.

(Keller’s Analysis: A good back and forth spirited battle. A bit surprising they gave Thekla a clean win here with a shoulder lift during a pin attempt along the way.)

-Afterward, Kris Statlander walked out and confronted the Sisters of Sin at ringside. Thekla stomped Rosa again. Statlander charged past security and made the save. Thekla retreated. Statlander had an intense, stoic disposition.

-A highlight package aired on the Mile High Mayhem match last week with narration from Jack Perry.

-Renee interviewed Tommaso Ciampa at ringside. Ciampa said Fletcher gave the TNT Title a makeover without his consent and now he’d hiding. He said Fletcher knows as soon as they run back their match, he’ll regain the title. He said if he has to play the games, he’ll do it. He said if he has to go to war with Mark Briscoe one more time, he’d do that. He said he didn’t come to AEW for instant classics, he came to be a top guy. He was interrupted by FTR’s music. FTR walked out with Stokely. Dax and Cash hugged him. Dax called him an old friend and said he was there to welcome him to AEW. He said when he heard him say he came to AEW to be a “top guy,” he couldn’t see a better way than be surrounded by top guys. He invited him to join them to take over the company. Ciampa said he hated their guts ten years ago and he still hates them. Ciampa punched Dax because he didn’t sign a no contact clause with them. Dax said he isn’t mad at him. He said he’d see him Saturday on Collision. [c]

[OVERRUN]

-Storm checked on Cassidy who w as icing his ribs backstage. Cassidy said he and Darby will continue to fight the War Dogs. Toni Storm went on a rant to get Cassidy even more hyped.

(7) “HANGMAN” ADAM PAGE & JET SPEED (“Speedball” Mike Bailey & Kevin Knight) vs. KAZUCHIKA OKADA & KYLE FLETCHER & MARK DAVIS – AEW Trios Title match

The bell rang 4 minutes into the hour. Excalibur said they’d stay with it as long as it took. Excalibur announced Fletcher would defend his TNT Title against Speedball next Wednesday on Dynamite. The heel trio isolated Speedball early. Hangman hot-tagged in and rallied. The three babyfaces took turns hitting Fletcher with a barrage of moves. Davis and Okada re-entered the ring as the babyface trio played to the crowd. All six battled. Hangman slingshot himself onto Davis at ringside. Speedball leaped over the top rope onto Okada. Fletcher pressed Knight off the top rope and threw him into the ringside barricade. They cut to a double-box break. [c/db]

Bailey leaped off the top rope and dropkicked Davis. When Fletcher went after him, Bailey landed some karate kicks and then a standing shooting star press. Davis went to break up the pin. Speedball moved and Davis landed on Fletcher with a senton. Fletcher ducked and then kicked Speedball. Speedball fought back and landed a shooting star press. Davis “broke up the pin” Okada went for a Rainmaker, but Speedball landed a spinning hook kick.

Hangman hot-tagged in against Davis, but Davis landed an enzuigiri. Hangman came back with a Dead Eye. Fletcher interrupted the count. Speedball rallied against Fletcher and flipped onto him at ringside. Hangman then landed a top rope moonsault and several lariats. As Davis stood, MJF yanked Hangman off the ring apron. Knight leaped off the top rope, but Okada hit him with a Rainmaker. Davis then delivered a leaping piledriver for the win.

WINNER: Okada & Davis & Fletcher in 13:00 to capture the AEW Trios Titles.

(Keller’s Analysis: Who had Davis scoring the pin? That’s a smart move, though, since the other two didn’t really need that, but it’s a boost to Davis to be the one to end the match. Good main event.)
