WWE EVOLVE TV RESULTS (9/9): The Mog Squad vs. Team ID 1.0 in a Team Gauntlet Series, Gianna Capri vs. Anya Rune

-The show opened with The Mog Squad walking in the back, talking trash about their competition. Max Abrams chose Jacari Ball to start the gauntlet match for their team tonight.

-Blake Howard announced that tonight’s show was going to be an ID Showcase special featuring all ID talent, then explained the rules of the Team Gauntlet Series between The Mog Squad and Team ID 1.0.

(1) GIANNA CAPRI vs. ANYA RUNE

Capri immediately took down Rune with a big boot at the bell, but Rune fought her way out of the corner. She attempted to use her “anime” powers, but Capri caught her and kicked her head into the second turnbuckle, then beat on her for a bit before getting a near fall. She grounded Rune with some elbows, then tried to twist her head off her shoulders. Capri talked trash and taunted Rune, which prompted her to fight back again. Rune wound up again with her anime powers, but this time, to everyone’s surprise, a flame shot from her hands that caught Capri under the chin. She executed a reverse DDT into a chokeslam for the win.

WINNER: Anya Rune at 4:01.

(Miller’s Take: Redemption for Rune after weeks of bullying and ridicule at the hands of Capri. It was a nice surprise to see Rune actually pull off something visually spectacular with her so-called anime powers, which got the results she’s been looking for. Unfortunately for Rune, that redemption was likely her swan song with WWE, as she was one of several Evolvers who were recently released. Rune is cuter than a bug, but the whole anime gimmick seems a bit outdated and indyriffic. Hopefully, she can hone her craft and tweak her gimmick enough to find her way back to WWE someday.)

-In the back, Sloane Jacobs marveled at Rune actually winning a match, then started gushing about her BFF, Evolve Women’s Champion Nikkita Lyons, when she was interrupted by P.J. Vasa, who said she was there to collect on her favor. She said she’d be back next week to declaw Big Kat. [c]

-A video was shown of WWE ID prospects who have seen success in Evolve and NXT, including The Vanity Project, Sean Legacy, E.K. Prosper, and Aaron Rourke.

-In the back, Chazz “Starboy” Hall was firing up Team ID 1.0 for their gauntlet match when Kale Dixon and Alix Brooks shoved past them en route to taking a seat in the VIP Lounge. They were joined by Adriana Rizzo, who asked them what they were doing there. Dixon said they were there to add star power to the show. As Dixon continued to drone on, Rizzo cut him off abruptly to move on to the next segment.

(Miller’s Take: Unfortunately, this is also probably the last appearance of Rizzo, who was also among the several cuts to the Evolve roster.)

-Blake Howard ran down next week’s card, including Lewis defending against James, and a women’s showcase special in two weeks.

(2) THE MOG SQUAD (Max Abrams & C.J. Valor & Santi Rivera & Jacari Ball) vs. TEAM ID 1.0 (Aaron Rourke & Capuccinno Jones & Marcus Mathers & Sam Holloway) – Team Gauntlet Series

Rourke began the gauntlet against Ball. Rourke rolled up Ball out of a waistlock, but ate a forearm after failing to take him over with an armdrag. Ball nailed a very high dropkick that flattened the former champ, then dropped a series of elbows for a near fall. He lifted Rourke for three consecutive gut-wrench suplexes for a two-count, but Rourke fired back and took the fight to the floor. He was briefly distracted by Dixon, but landed a Molly-Go-Round on Ball for the pin.

Eliminated: Jacari Ball at 3:41. [c]

Next up was C.J. Valor, who took some shots at Rourke and got a two-count after a stiff clothesline. Valor lost his headband, then lost his footing after Rourke delivered a flat-back dropkick. As Rourke climbed the ropes, Kale Dixon threw a pillow at him, which allowed Valor to grab a handful of tights to get the pin.

Eliminated: Aaron Rourke at 9:28.

Sam Holloway entered the ring and demolished Valor with his combination of power and agility, but Valor survived to mount a comeback. He got a near fall after a shoulder tackle, then hit some rabbit punches to the gut, which Holloway returned. He hit a nasty double underhook on Valor that launched him into the corner. He went for a chokeslam, but Valor held on with an armbar. That was impressive. He executed Chaos Theory for a very believable near fall, but got eliminated after Holloway succeeded with a second chokeslam.

Eliminated: C.J. Valor at 14:01 [c]

Santi Rivera was next up for The Mog Squad, and quickly went to work on Holloway’s back. He cinched in a headlock that Holloway fought his way out of, but Rivera quickly regained control. Amazingly, the large Holloway landed a high dropkick and pinned Rivera after a chokeslam.

Eliminated: Santi Rivera at 17:01.

Max Abrams entered the ring with his swim goggles-looking mask on. He jumped off the ropes and bounced off Holloway and then rolled to the outside. As the referee was concerned with Abrams, Cutler James ran in the ring and blasted Holloway. Abrams rolled back into the ring and scored the pin.

Eliminated: Sam Holloway at 18:44.

Marcus Mathers entered the match and went to work on Abrams, who kept losing his stupid-looking mask. As the Moggers congregated on the outside, Mathers took a running leap over the top rope onto all of them. [c]

Back from a quick commercial break, Abrams was working over Mathers when the cameras cut to the back, where Shido Ash had taken out Capuccinno Jones before being shooed away before Chazz “Starboy” Hall. Back in the ring, Mathers got a two-count after a Spanish Fly. He hit a 450 splash for a two-count after being briefly distracted by the Moggers, who were still hanging out at ringside. They were promptly ejected to the back, but a very bloody-faced Abrams scored the pin on Mathers shortly afterwards.

Eliminated: Marcus Mathers at 26:29.

With Jones having been taken out by Ash in the back, Foreman Thatcher came out and told Sarah Schreiber the match was over because there were no more members of Team 1.0 left to continue the match. As Schreiber began to announce The Mog Squad as the winners, It’s Gal’s music hit, and he came out saying he wanted in. Thatcher allowed it.

A highly energized It’s Gal entered the ring and took the fight to Abrams. He nailed a discus clothesline, but missed a springboard dropkick. Abrams landed a blockbuster, but It’s Gal came back with a blue thunder powerbomb for the pin.

Eliminated: Max Abrams at 28:13.

WINNERS: WWE Team ID 1.0 at 28:13

(Miller’s Take: That was a very exciting main event! The surprise appearance of It’s Gal was not only a pleasant one, but also the determining factor in the match. Gauntlet matches, when done right like this one was, can be a whole lot of fun to watch, while still maintaining ring psychology and storytelling that other multi-person matchups sorely lack.)

-After the match, a jubilant It’s Gal called for a hugs from Rourke and Mathers. They smiled widely and embraced Big Daddy Red, who appears to have finally made some friends. The three posed together in the ring for a feel-good moment before a happy crowd.

-In the men’s locker room, a disgusted Harley Riggins mumbled a threat under his breath before walking away.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Very good show. It was cool to see Anya Rune put Gianna Capri in her place with her anime powers that actually worked this time. The main event gauntlet match was a hard-hitting affair with a surprise ending that made me smile. What more could you ask for? See you next week!
