LIVE ON YOUTUBE RIGHT AFTER WWE RAW TONIGHT: LIVE ON YOUTUBE
[HOUR ONE]
-Joe Tessitore introduced the show as they showed an aerial view of Mexico City. He said it’s the first Raw there in 15 years. A video package aired on the Penta vs. Rey Fenix tournament final. A video message showed Reigns saying he was going to throw his “little ass” around the ring. Soundbites with Penta aired in Spanish.
-They showed Reigns getting off a jet and into a shuttle. Boos erupted. Then they showed Penta arriving at the arena on horseback, surrounded by cheering fans. Tessitore said there are few places like Mexico City with 22 million people who are immensely proud.
-Rey Mysterio made his ring entrance to cheers from the crowd. He was wearing a neck brace. Graves discussed events at TripleMania over the weekend. He spoke in a mix of English and Spanish. He said one moment really stood out in WWE’s recent international travels. A clip aired from a live event in Santiago, Chile on Saturday night of Stephanie Vaquer beating Liv Morgan to win the Women’s Title when Liv lost her focus when she argued with special referee Becky Lynch.
Back live, Rey introduced new champion Vaquer, who made her entrance wearing the title belt. She entered the ring and spoke in Spanish to the crowd. Then she spoke in English about her big win, calling it “the joy of my life.” Then Liv’s entrance theme interrupted her. Liv walked out with Dominik Mysterio. As they spoke, the boos got louder.
Dom said all he sees when he looks at Vaquer is a cheater. “This is what a real champion looks like,” he said. Rey said, “Didn’t you lose your championship yesterday?” He then threw to a clip of Dom missing a top rope splash, leading to El Grande Americano scoring a three count to win the AAA Mega Title.
Dom asked if that’s how they want to play it, then they should fight a mixed tag. GM Adam Pearce said Rey’s neck is injured and it’s not happening. Dom said it’s a fake neck injury. El Grande Americano came out to offer his services in place of Rey. He was wildly cheered and then fans sang.
Americano entered the ring and in Spanish offered to team with Vaquer. Pearce said it sounded good to him and made it official. [c]
(1) EL GRANDE AMERICANO & STEPHANIE VAQUER (w/Rey Mysterio) vs. DOMINIK MYSTERIO & LIV MORGAN
The bell rang 21 minutes into the hour. Liv took it to Vaquer at ringside early and then continued the attack in the ring. She taunted Americano. Americano and Dom each tagged in a minute later. Grande dominated. Dom took over after a brief distraction by Liv. They cut to a break at 4:00. [c]
Americano reached for a tag, but Liv yanked Vaquer off the ring apron. Dom schoolboyed Americano for a two count. Americano came back with an Air Raid Crash for a two count at 9:00. [c]
Vaquer gave Liv her Devil’s Kiss. Dom entered the ring. Liv gave a back stabber to Vaquer as she turned to Dom. Americano went after Dom. Dom set up a 619. Americano countered and sent Dom into position for a 619. He played to the crowd for a while. Liv slapped him. He brushed it off. Vaquer knocked Liv onto Dom. Rey told Vaquer to go for it. Vaquer gave both a 619. As Americano climbed to the top rope, JD McDonagh ran out and knocked him off the top rope. The ref called for the DQ.
WINNERS: Americano & Vaquer in 13:00 via DQ.
-Dom pulled Rey up onto the ring apron by his neck brace. Americano made the save. JD attacked Americano and landed a moonsault. Liv, JD, and Dom beat up Rey, Americano, and Vaquer. Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez entered the ring and posed over the fallen bodies.
-They went to Tessitore and Graves at ringside. They threw to a video of Bronson Reed attacking Oba Femi at Sunday Night’s Main Event last week.
-Je’Von Evans made his ring entrance. [c]
-Backstage, Dragon Lee offered encouragement to Penta.
(2) AUSTIN THEORY (w/Maxxinne Dupri) vs. BIG CASS vs. JE’VON EVANS – Money in the Bank qualifying match
Theory and Dupri entered the ring. Then Cass’s full entrance took place. The bell rang 46 minutes into the hour. Austin attacked Evans. Cass attacked Evans. Evans made a comeback and knocked Theory over the ringside barricade. Cass caught him mid-air and chokeslammed him into Theory in the time keeper’s area. He let out a roar as they cut to an early break at 2:00. [c]
Theory lifted Cass onto his shoulders and landed a helicopter rack bomb. Evans landed a top rope splash on Theory before Theory could follow-up on Cass. Dupri checked on Theory at ringside as Evans let out a yell and then ran and leaped over the top rope with a bodypress on Theory.
Back in the ring, Cass gave Evans a side slam. When he aimed for Theory, Dupri yanked Theory out of the ring by his boot. Evans then tried to surprise Cass with an OG Cutter. Cass blocked it. Evans went for a springboard move, but Cass swatted him out of mid-air. Theory intervened and went for the pin, but Cass yanked him off the cover at two. Dupri yelled at Cass for “touching my man.” Cass tossed Theory around ringside. Evans leaped at Cass at ringside. Cass shoved Evans into the ring apron and then chokeslammed him onto the ring apron.
Cass stalked Evans in the ring and went for a big boot, but Theory cut him off with a forearm. Evans then leaped onto Theory and slammed him onto Cass. Evans then gave Cass a springboard cutter off the top rope for a three count.
WINNER: Evans in 10:00 to qualify for the MITB ladder match.
(Keller’s Analysis: Surprising to see Cass lose clean here, but not complaining.)
-Tessitore said WWE Club members are entitled to a 10 percent discount to get their name on the canvas at MITB. (How generous.)
-A video package aired on last week’s happenings with Royce Keys and his cohorts setting the Usos rental SUV on fire.
-The Usos were shown backstage saying they hadn’t seen Keys and his cohorts in the 946 yet. Jacob Fatu came up to them. Jey said what they need to do is protect Roman at all costs. Fatu yelled that he understands that. He said they’re going to try to take them out before the match so it’s clear shot at Reigns. Jey asked what the play is. Fatu said the play is to stick together. Jimmy looked skeptically at Fatu.
[HOUR TWO]
-Chad Gable’s ring entrance took place. He blew kisses to the crowd and yelled that it was good to be back. [c]
-Tessitore hyped that Raw, Smackdown, and NXT would begin airing on Netflix on Japan starting Oct. 1.
(3) CHAD GABLE vs. DRAGON LEE – Intercontinental Title match
The bell rang 6 minutes into the hour. Graves noted Gable had a home town advantage at Summerslam, but Lee had it here. Lee landed a dive at ringside and then threw Gable back into the ring. Gable made a comeback and overhead-suplexed Lee.
Lee took a runing leap off the ring apron and crashed into Gable on the announce desk. They cut to a break with both men down and slow to get up. [c]
They exchanged strikes mid-ring. Gable got the better of Lee and landed a sitout powerbomb for a near fall at 9:00. Lee went for Operation Dragon. Gable countered. Lee thwarted Gable’s offense. Gable knocked Lee off the top rope and then tried to superplex him off the top rope. Graves said that would not end well for either of them. Lee knocked Gable backwards and then landed his leaping double stomp. Lee clutched his ankle when he landed, though.
Gable rallied with an overhead suplex. It seemed Lee landed partially on the top of his head. Gable landed a nice top rope moonsault for a near fall. He followed with a series of unreleased German suplexes. Lee landed on his feet on the third and then he hit Operation Dragon for a near fall that popped the crowd at 13:00.
They battled back and forth with mat holds and counters rapid-fire. Gable tried for an anklelock. Lee blocked it and eventually rolled through and then gave Gable a Styles Clash for a near fall. Graves yelled, “New champion!” as the ref counted, virtually assuring a kickout before three. Gable managed to apply an anklelock seconds later. Lee crawled toward the bottom rope, but tapped. Gable hugged him afterward, almost apologetically. Tessitore said there are times they have to stand up at their announce desk and give a match an ovation and this is one.
WINNER: Gable in 16:00 to retain the IC Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: Really good match, elevated by A-level crowd reactions rooting for Lee the whole way.)
-A vignette aired with Bayley speaking about her history with Lyra Valkyria. She said she tries to use everything she stands for against her. She vowed to show Lyra and the world that she is the standard of women’s wrestling.
-They went outside the arena where a band was playing. Tessitore touted 49,017 in attendance over three days in Mexico City.
(4) KELANI JORDAN vs. LOLA VICE vs. RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ – Money in the Bank qualifying match
Jordan made her entrance first. The bell rang 33 minutes into the hour. Lots of non-stop action in the early minutes that spilled to ringside. Jordan springboard-moonsaulted onto Raquel at ringside. Vice leaped off the ring apron onto Jordan with a Thesz Press. Raquel took Vice down with a running crossbody. They cut to a break at 3:00. [c]
Vice rallied against Raquel and landed some butt-first “hip” attacks. He then gave Jordan a belly-to-back for a two count. Raquel took Vice down with a clothesline. Jordan leaped off the top rope at Raquel. Raquel caught her, but Jordan turned it into a roll-up for a two count. Jordan landed a top rope frog splash. Vice entered and took Jordan down with a lightning-fast tornado kick. Raquel broke up the cover.
Raquel charged at Jordan, but Jordan moved. Jordan went for a 450 splash, but Vice turned it into a head scissors. Raquel broke up the hold and then went for a Tejana Bomb. Vice countered. Raquel gave Jordan a big boot to knock her off the ring apron. Vice rolled up Raquel for a three count.
WINNER: Vice in 11:00.
-They went to Tessitore and Graves at ringside who reacted to Vice’s win and then threw to a video.
-Keys and his cohorts were shown speaking about The Bloodline. Keys asked what they were even doing in Mexico. Keys lit his lighter and said, “Good luck, Roman.”
-They showed Penta backstage. [c]
-A video aired wth Joe Hendry singing “Give Joe Hendry Every Single Belt (Right Now).”
-Becky told Vaquer outside that she wouldn’t be champion if not for her, so she should get the first crack at it.
(5) ROMAN REIGNS vs. PENTA – World Heavyweight Title match
Penta wore a giant peacock headdress on his way to the ring. Graves said we could be minutes away from a religious experience in the biggest match of Penta’s career. Graves said Reigns has to fight an entire nation tonight. Boos erupted for Roman’s entrance. After formal ring introductions and a staredown, they cut to a break. [c]
The bell rang 6 minutes into the hour. Reigns and Penta stared each other down. Roman methodically punched away at Penta. Penta made a comeback at 3:00 and then landed a running flip dive onto Roman at ringside. They cut to a break. [c]
Reigns was in control after the break, acting cocky as fans booed him. Penta showed some fire and attempted a comeback, but Reigns brushed him off. He punched away at him in the corner again. He walked around the ring looking disgusted. Penta avoided a charging Reigns in the corner and then ducked a clothesline. He followed with a leaping faceplant. Penta scored a two count after a springboard leaping DDT at 10:00.
Penta gave Reigns his signature Sacrifice arm snap. Reigns sold it big. Reigns blocked a Penta Driver and then slammed Penta and scored a two count. They cut to a double-box break. [c/db]
Reigns hit a Drive-By during the break. He then delivered several strikes in the corner inside the ring. He continued to clutch his arm, selling the Sacrifice. Back from the break, he signaled for the Superman Punch. When he punched the mat, he winced. Penta went on the attack. Reigns backdropped Penta to the floor, but lay on the ring apron looking exhausted.
Reigns threw Penta onto the announce desk. He threw Penta back into the ring and signaled for a Superman Punch. Penta countered into a Penta Driver for a near fall that popped the crowd. (Nicely, the announcers did not say the match was over and “new champion” during the count.) Penta went for a Mexican Destroyer, but Reigns intercepted him with a Superman Punch for a two count.
Penta leapfrogged a spear and hit a Mexican Destroyer. Reigns popped up and hit a spear for a two count. Both men were down and slow to get up. Fans were standing. “This is surreal!” exclaimed Graves. “The atmosphere is unlike anything we have seen in so long.” (Yep, precisely. A Peak Fan Experience with a clearcut crowd favorite and an opponent playing up being the heel with arrogance.)
Reigns punched away at Penta, then asked for the mic. Fans booed. Reigns gave Penta an extra stomp, then taunted the fans and demanded, “Acknowledge me!” Fans booed. Penta began to rise behind him. Reigns went for a spear, but Penta superkicked him. He then hit a springboard Mexican Destroyer for a very near fall. They cut to fans going bananas. Both were down and slow to get up at 20:00.
They exchanged strikes mid-ring. Penta landed three superkicks in a row to send Reigns backwards into the ropes. Penta then went for another springboard move, but Reigns landed a Superman Punch to knock him out of mid-air followed by a spear for a clean win. They cut to dismayed fans as Reigns’s music played. Reigns sold the grueling fight and was slow to get up. Graves said Penta should be proud of the valiant effort he put forth. “Unfortunately for Penta, the opponent tonight was Roman Reigns,” he said.
As Raw ended, the mic picked up Reigns saying, “Let me hear you now! I don’t hear shit now!”
WINNER: Reigns in 21:00 to retain the World Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: What a spectacle in a great way. That’s what WWE should be building everything they do toward replicating in any way they can with different match-ups that will get a crowd that engaged. It’s almost shocking they didn’t have Keys and his crew involved in the finish.)
