[HOUR ONE]
-They opened with a shot inside Arena Mexico. Then they went to ringside where Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and Nigel McGuiness were sitting at the announce desk. Nigel introduced the show as the camera panned the cheering fans. He touted a two-and-a-half-hour “epic event.”
(1) ADAM COPELAND & CHRISTAIN CAGE & THE YOUNG BUCKS (Nick & Matt Jackson) vs. THE DEATH RIDERS (Jon Moxley & Pac & Wheeler Yuta & Daniel Garcia)
Adam Copeland made his ring entrance. When the music stopped, fans finished singing Copeland song lyrics. Then Christian Cage came out. Nigel said there are very few venues in the world with the prestige and the atmosphere of Arena Mexico. Third out was The Young Bucks. The Death Riders made their way out through the entrance tunnel from the backstage stage and walked through the crowd. Schiavone raved about the energy and enthusiasm of the atmosphere as the bell rang 9 minutes into the hour. He said the energy is firing up the wrestlers. All eight brawled mid-ring seconds into the match. The babyfaces cleared the ring. Nick did a flip dive onto heels at ringside. Christian leaped off the top rope onto a group of heels. They cut to an early double-box break less than two minutes in. [c/db]
Matt hot-tagged in Copeland at 6:00 to a big pop. Copeland clotheslined both Pac and Claudio. Mox caught him with a cutter and then gave a middle finger gesture to the crowd. The Bucks gave stereo 619’s to Moxley a minute later. Christian gave Mox a low kick from behind. Nigel said the ref was looking the other way. The Bucks gave Mox stereo superkicks. Copeland made the cover. Pac and Garcia interrupted the count.
Copeland gave Mox his Impaler DDT. Shafir held Copeland’s hair to stop him from a spear. Christian gave Shafir a kick to the crowd at ringside. Yuta landed a Busaiku Knee on Copeland. Mox and Pac beat up Copeland until Copeland rolled up Mox for a leverage two count. Copeland then landed a spear, but Yuta was holding onto the ref.
Copeland ran into Matt accidentally on the ring apron and then Mox rolled him up and yanked on his tights for the three count.
Afterward, the Bucks and Copeland & Christian had some mildly heated words as they tried to work through what happened leading to the finish.
WINNERS: Death Riders 12:00.
-Excalibur threw to a video package on the Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay fight. [c]
(2) ANDRADE EL IDOLO vs. TOMMASO CIAMPA vs. KOMANDER – Winner Enters Gauntlet match first
Renee Paquette gave a stage report noting that Ciampa said whoever wins between Omega and Ospreay, their celebration will be short-lived. Andrade was accompanied by two women. Schiavone asked, “Is he not the coolest guy on the roster?” The bell rang 32 minutes into the hour. Komander did a beautiful full top rope walk followed by a graceful aerial flip dive onto both opponents at ringside. Andrade took a selfie at ringside at 2:30 and then of course paid a price for it as Ciampa kicked him in the head as they cut to a double-box break. [c/db]
During the break, Ciampa tossed Andrade ove the ringside barricade and then posed for a selfie with the woman at ringside. He then took her camera, stood in the ring, pulled open his waistband, took a photo of what was showing underneath, and then tossed her the phone. She seemed slightly embarrassed but giggled a bit. Ciampa stayed on offense during the break.
Andrade eventually made a comeback and played to the crowd. He took off his buckle. Nigel said he saw a woman just faint. Excalibur added, “A couple of fellas, too.” As Andrade took off his pants and revealed his trunks that said “How you know?” on the back, they showed a woman excitedly filming it in the front row. Fans chanted “Eddie! Eddie!” after Three Amigos. Ciampa took over and attacked Andrade’s pants, giving the pants Project Ciampa and then he went for a cover on the pants. The ref counted. Komander went for a 450, but Ciampa moved and then gave Komander a back cracker for a two count.
Andrade met Ciampa in the corner and slapped him. He set up a superplex. Komander gave Andrade a reverse huracanrana. Ciampa then countered Komander and slammed him to the mat for a near fall. He complained to the ref. Andrade caught Ciampa with double-knees in teh corner. Komander interrupted the cover. Komander walked the top rope and flipped onto Ciampa. Andrade then gave Ciampa his DM for the win.
WINNER: Andrade in 11:00.
-Afterward, Andrade said he wanted to win the Casino Gauntlet at All In and then win the AEW World Title for the fans. He spoke a mix of Spanish and English. He closed with, “I have one question. How you know?”
MJF made his entrance. “Oh, no,” said Schiavone. MJF came up behind Andrade and hit him with is AEW Title from behind. He snarled and then took back the Dynamite Diamond Ring. He punched away at Andrade’s forehead, which bled. He yelled, “You wanna take what’s mine?” He tossed Andrade off the ramp and he crashed onto the floor. MJF said someone should “get this piece of trash from this piece of shit country of this arena right now.”
MJF told booing fans, “How dare you? I am an American hero… Make no mistake about it; I am your champion!” He said they should talk about the fact that Beach Break he had Omega defeated until Ospreay got involved. He raged (like Ric Flair) that it was his main event at Wembley and it was stolen from him. He said he always gets what he wants. He said in Las Vegas next week, there is a Gaunlet qualifying match for the Casino Gaunlet match for the no. 2 spot. He said he’ll enter the match and win it. He said he’ll dog walk Andrade at Wembley. He said he is the only champion. who should be recognized. He said he’ll remind the world after All In that “whether you like it or not, I am your one true champion.” He held up his title belt. MJF left the ring and yelled at fans as security escorted him away.
-A video package aired on Willow Nightingale’s celebration last week ending with an interaction with Mercedes Mone and then Mercedes and Divine Dominion attacking her. [c]
-Ring entrances for the next match took place.
[HOUR TWO]
(2) DIVINE DOMINION (Lena Kross & Megan Bayne) & MERCEDES MONE vs. THE BRAWLING BIRDS (Jamie Hayter & Alex Windsor) & WILLOW NIGHTINGALE
The bell rang at the top of the hour. At 3:00 Hayter leaped off the top rope onto the three heels and then they cut to a double-box break. [c/db]
After Kross and Bayne gave German suplexes to Hayter and Windsor, Hayter popped up and nailed Bayne with a running clothesline. Willow gave Mercedes a spinebuster a minute later for a near fall. Mercedes landed a Meteora, but Windsow headbutted her. After more chaos, Willow gave Bayne a Death Valley Driver. Willow then set up a superplex on Willow, but Willow blocked it. Willow hit her with a clothesline instead. When she set up a powerbomb, Divine Dominion intervened. The Brawling Birds knocked them out of the ring. Willow and Mercedes battled for a backslide. Willow won the battle for a three count. The announcers noted this is the first blemish on the record of Divine Dominion.
WINNERS: Willow & The Brawling Birds in 12:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: I like Willow getting another win over Mercedes as it’s a bit against the trope of the challenger pinning the champ in a tag match before a singles match, but also it just further builds Willow as the real deal.)
(3) KYLE FLETCHER (w/Don Callis) vs. “SPEEDBALL” MIKE BAILEY – AEW International Championship match
Speedball wore a mask as a tribute to his former partner Mistico. Excalibur said Fletcher and Speedball have split their previous two matches. Renee passed along Fletcher’s mindset that he wanted to test himself against a rival tonight. Fletcher had some words for Speedball mid-ring after the bell rang 17 minutes into the hour. Fans booed when Fletcher disrepected a mask he brought to the ring by rubbing his boot on it and kicking it to the floor.
They opened with some fast-moving exchanges including a leapfrog by Bailey into an armdrag and then a bodyslam. (Ricky Steamboat would be proud.) Speedball sunset flipped Fletcher for a one count. He backflipped to avoid Fletcher and then chopped his chest. He held onto Fletcher’s wrist and then walked the top rope and headscissored Fletcher to the mat. Nigel noted he was gasping for air due to the altitude and it could affect the wrestlers too.
Fletcher caught Bailey diving at him at ringside and then darted him head-first into the ringside barricade. They showed women in the crowd gasping with concern. Fletcher strutted and gloated. Excalibur noted that the barricades at Arena Mexico are bolted down.
Fletcher threw Bailey into the ring where Bailey scored a two count with a backslide. Speedball then backflipped onto Fletcher at ringside. Speedball landed a running shooting star press for a two count at 4:00. Fletcher landed a top rope Michinoku Driver for a near fall a minute later. Bailey rolled to the floor. Fletcher strutted in the ring as they cut to a double-box break. [c/db]
They fought down the aisle to the stage. Bailey blocked Fletcher and took him down with a head scissors. He then leaped off the stairs and backflipped onto Fletcher. Back in the ring, Fletcher scored a near fall on Fletcher. Fletcher landed a leaping Michinoku Driver for a near fall at 12:00. Bailey and Fletcher tumbled to the floor. Fletcher powerbombed Bailey into the ring apron and then kicked him back in the ring. He landed his Brainbuster for a dramatic, believable near fall.
A minute later, Bailey took Fletcher to the mat with a reverse huracanrana. He then leaped off the top rope with his Ultimate Weapon 450 doubleknees for a dramatic near fall. Fans popped. Fletcher propelled Bailey face-first into a turnbuckle and then delivered the turnbuckle brainbuster for the win.
WINNER: Fletcher in 16:00 to retain the AEW International Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: They packed so much athleticism and drama into 16 minutes, almost to a fault just because it felt like it was frenetic for the sake of being frenetic without any lasting consequences from the moves. That said, they were really hitting their spots and Bailey was perfect in his role as a wide-eyed underdog giving it his all. The crowd ate it up.)
-Kazuchika Okada made his entrance afterward, kind of stepping on Fletcher’s celebration. There was a brief moment of tension between them as Fletcher left the ring.
(5) MISTICO & CHRIS JERICHO & DARBY ALLIN vs. HECHICERO & KEVIN KNIGHT & KAZUCHIKA OKADA
Jericho made his entrance to “Judas.” The graphic said Corazon de Leon. Excalibur said Jericho was going in the Wayback Machine to his early days in Mexico. Knight attacked Darby as he approached the ring. He then held up Darby’s skateboard. Schiavone said, “It was a hell of a move; it really was!” The ref called for the bell as everyone brawled 43 minutes into the hour. Knight tossed Darby onto the ringside barricade.
Jericho gave Knight a Death Valley Driver and played to the crowd for cheers, cupping his ear. Jericho tagged in Darby. Knight retreated and Hechicero replaced him. Darby went for a dive through the ropes at Okada, but Okada dropkicked him mid-air. They cut to a double-box break. [c/db]
Knight and Darby battled after the break. Darby landed a Coffin Drop at ringside. Mistico leaped over the ringpost onto Hechicero next. Darby climbed to the top rope, but Knight knocked him off balance. Knight went for a Coast to Coast, but Jericho caught him mid-air with a Judas Effect. Jericho then put Okada in a Walls of Jericho. Mistico took Hechicero down and locked him on the mat as Darby hit Knight with a Coffin Drop for the win.
WINNERS: Darby & Jericho & Mistico in 11:00.
