-Vic teed up the show and we got a hype segment for the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Cody Rhodes spoke about his father understanding the value of tag teams better than most, and he spoke some very basic stuff about tag team greatness, but it was elevated by the fact that it was Cody, and the fact that it was Dusty’s son.
(1) NOAM DAR & ROMEO MORENO vs. LOS AMERICANOS (Rayo & Bravo) – Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic first round match
Dar and Rayo started it off, and Rayo exited a hip toss with a flourish and tagged Bravo. Moreno tagged in and nailed Bravo with a kick, but then ate an inverted atomic drop after a rope run. Bravo danced a little and tagged Rayo, and monkey flipped Moreno into a forearm by Rayo. Rayo hit a plancha. Dar made a blind tag and nailed Rayo with a kick. All four members of The Vanity Project were shown watching on a monitor, as they’re the champions of the brand and also have a first-round bye.
Dar nailed some rangy kicks but Rayo came at him with palm strikes. Dar trapped Rayo in a guillotine and added a body scissors, and Bravo was caught by Moreno when trying to break, but he eventually wriggled free and slammed Moreno onto the pile to break. Dar and Moreno got bumped to the outside and Bravo hit both with a plancha. Los Americanos danced a little and the match went to split-screen. [c]
Full-screen returned with Bravo crawling for a tag to Rayo, and Moreno trying to tag but being caught as the heat sequence continued. He eventually leaped for a tag and Dar started dominating Bravo. He booted Rayo from the apron and nailed Bravo with a dropkick, then worked an ankle lock. He managed a huge left and tagged Moreno. He draped Bravo to allow Moreno to double-stomp him down into the mat. A social media comment from Axiom put over the match and said that they, who also get a bye into the second round, will face the winners in the next round.
Bravo caught both opponents with his ridiculous strength, did an airplane spin and dropped both. He covered Dar for two. Rayo tagged in and he and Bravo teamed up for a few shots on Dar, but Moreno cut off Bravo with a crescent kick. Rayo hit the Bitter End on Dar and covered for two but Moreno butted into him to break it up. Rayo and Bravo hammered down on Dar and Moreno flew off the top to hit a missile dropkick on Bravo. Bonzo gonzo. Rayo and Moreno got dumped. Bravo went for the Tiger Driver but got caught by Dar. Dar caught a flying Bravo in a leg lock, but Bravo hit his feet and managed a German suplex to get some separation. Both guys sold on the mat as a “this is awesome” chant rang out.
Moreno recovered and tried to fly out onto Rayo, but Rayo caught him with a right. Bravo took Dar up in a corner and hit a super huracanrana. Rayo flew in with a moonsault that got a very long two. Thought it was done there. Rayo worked the digits on Moreno, then on Dar, who was legal. He stomped, then tagged Bravo. Moreno was actually legal, missed by Los Americanos, and he used Dar as a springboard to nail Rayo off the top. Dar tagged in and he and Moreno hit high-low on Bravo. Dar covered Bravo for the win.
WINNERS: Noam Dar & Romeo Moreno at 14:28.
(Wells’s Analysis: Absolutely thrilling opener to the tournament that really made it feel like either team could win, though they’re trying to do something with Dar & Moreno (rightfully so) so I assumed throughout that they were the frontrunners here. This match had all the high spots that fans eat up, but also had a true heat sequence and tag team continuity. Young tag teams who do highspots and nothing else…take notes)
-There was a brief recap of Grayson Waller getting a new #1 contender – Mason Rook – last week.
-Kali Armstrong was introduced. [c]
-An unseen psychologist talked to Kendal Grey about how she was feeling. Pretty sure these meetings are meant to be confidential. She talked about how much it sucks being on the sidelines watching others accomplish things. The psychologist asked what’s so bad about slowing down when she knows big things can come later. She said this time, she doesn’t know when she’s going to be able to come back. She said she was on the highest of highs but she was knocked to the bottom. The psychologist tasked her with figuring out who Kendal Grey is when she’s not competing. She said she didn’t know. Kendal is slowly but surely improving and becoming more confident on the mic.
(2) SKYLAR RAYE vs. KALI ARMSTRONG
Raye got an inset promo during her entrance about grabbing the notice of the women’s division. Armstrong charged Raye to a corner and battered her with rights while talking down to her. She threw blocks in another corner, then ran station-to-station but got caught with some hip tosses. Raye evaded a few shots and hit another hip toss and a dropkick that sent Armstrong to the floor. Armstrong briefly looked under the ring and then went back into the ring. Armstrong threw some rights, doing a little shuffle before the last one. She hit a wicked slam on Raye, then got rolled up for two. She reversed for two. Raye got another rollup for two. Raye hit a high cross-body for two.
They went to their feet and Raye tried to cut down Armstrong with some rights. Armstrong caught Raye and hit a running powerslam for two. The match went to split-screen. [c]
Raye hit a backstabber. She strung together strikes to stay one step ahead of the overwhelming Armstrong. Big tornado DDT by Raye. Raye hit a frog splash for two. Armstrong caught and slammed Raye, then hit a spinebuster for two. Raye charged Armstrong to a corner and rolled her up for two. Raye went high but Armstrong caught her with a scoop powerslam. Armstrong went for the Kali Connection but bumped referee Dallas Irvin, allowing Reina Volcan to interfere and slaughter both women. She dropped Raye, who happened to drape her arm over the fallen Armstrong (in a very convoluted moment). Irvin recovered and counted the three.
WINNER: Skylar Raye at 9:36.
(Wells’s Analysis: There were a couple of moments where they didn’t mesh, but mostly this was a good big-small that gave Raye a win but there’s a huge asterisk on it so Armstrong doesn’t lose anything. I had just about forgotten Volcan after the wonderful first impression, so it’s nice to see her back in there)
-Rob Stone was talking with Shiloh Hill and Saquon Shugars, who had a weird scene about Hill’s ingestion of hallucinogenic mist last week. Shugars said he might be interested in some. Stone promised both men to try to get them the matches they want next week, which was mostly to get himself out of the situation. [c]
(3) LA CATALINA & THEA HAIL vs. KELANI JORDAN & ZARIA
Hail charged at Zaria but got caught early. Jordan tagged herself in, irritating Zaria. Hail rolled up Jordan for one. Catalina tagged in and she and Hail took turns bouncing Jordan hard against the ropes. Catalina & Hail took control and the match went to split-screen. [c]
Zaria went for a delayed suplex on Hail, who reversed and hopped on and worked a brief sleeper before Zaria tossed her off. Jordan tagged in and hit a springboard moonsault on Hail. Jordan tied up Hail in an abdominal stretch. Hail tried to run around Jordan and did so until she was able to reverse the hold. Jordan charged Hail to the heel corner, but Hail managed to fight both of them until rolling for the hot tag but falling short when Jordan hit a wheelbarrow into a suplex. Zaria tagged in and laid out Hail and covered for two.
[HOUR TWO]
Zaria and Jordan went for a double suplex but Hail dumped Zaria, then Jordan to the announce table side. Hail slooowly crawled for a tag, managed a kick on Jordan, then evaded a cannonball by Zaria and finally leaped for the tag. Catalina hit a missile dropkick on Jordan, then started mauling both heels. She hit a victory roll on Zaria for two. She threw a hard right to Zaria and ran around the ring to attack both heels over and over. Hail tagged in and was able to reverse an F-5 attempt into a rollup for the win.
WINNERS: Thea Hail & La Catalina at 9:34.
(Wells’s Analysis: Another strong tag match that had its big moments but also a long heat sequence to get people invested. This was a foregone conclusion as there’s only one non-champion in the match so clearly she’s going to be the winner, but it was a fun ride getting there)
-Zilla Fatu and Sean Legacy talked ahead of their six-man match. Legacy said Dorian Van Dux isn’t cleared. Van Dux showed up and said he was good to go, but Legacy said that was ridiculous because he has a hole in his lung. He said he got a hold of EK Prosper, who then joined the scene and said he was good to go. Legacy told DVD he needs him ready for the Dusty Classic. DVD was bummed as the others headed off.
-Cruz Montana was introduced ahead of the next segment. [c]
-Montana said he set his sights on the NXT Championship, but he hasn’t been stacking up wins yet, but he doesn’t suffer losses, he learns lessons. He started to say he’s got next after the upcoming NXT Championship match, but DarkState’s music played them out into the crowd.
Dion Lennox said DarkState is going to run through the Dusty Cup and he laughed at Montana. Montana laughed mockingly and said if the other two are tied up in the Dusty Cup, maybe Lennox should head to the ring and face him.
Lennox asked Montana if he’s better than him just because he’s been doing this his whole life and set up some dusty rings. Lennox said he never had someone in his corner, nobody cleaning up his mistakes, and he still made it.
Montana asked if Lennox’s feelings were hurt because he said EK Prosper is the future of this brand. Montana said the only person who ever cleaned up his mistakes was the man in the mirror. He talked about how hard he worked to get there and how much he earned everything he’s ever gotten in and out of the ring. He said for all the athletic ability Lennox brags about, he’ll run circles around him in the ring and in all aspects of the business every day. Montana said Lennox walked into wrestling because he couldn’t cut it elsewhere. He said the NFL didn’t want his ass. Montana said he didn’t get Instagram messages about WWE tryouts – he just took his opportunity. He said he carries his message, his city, and his culture on his back while Lennox gets handed everything and still throws it on the floor. Montana told him to get the hell out of the ring.
Lennox asked Montana – wasn’t your mother a drug dealer? His wasn’t. He said everyone here hates him but loves Montana, and why? Because Dion Lennox wasn’t a drug dealer like him? Because he was a mess and has it all together now, when he could’ve just been that guy on day one? He said Montana had to lose everything to become somebody, but he’s been somebody his whole life.
Montana threw hands and the two brawled to the back. That was literally the best segment the two men have ever had in NXT.
-Rob Stone talked to Mason Rook. He told Rook he had an open mic tonight to talk about Grayson Waller tonight. Rook said that was great because Waller isn’t just the Champion, he’s the champion of running his mouth. Hank & Tank showed up and put over Rook, who then left the scene. Hank & Tank got super annoying – the intent was energetic, but whatever – about the Dusty Cup and how they weren’t going to be anyone’s friends for a while. [c]
-Vic talked about the John Cena 1/1 patch auto card going for a record $329,400 on auction.
(4) HARLEY RIGGINS & JAX PRESLEY vs. THE CREED BROTHERS (Brutus & Julius)
Riggins is a promising young heel in Evolve. Presley hasn’t been featured much yet. Brutus & Julius owned the first couple of minutes and Presley played face in peril as Riggins stomped the ring to get the crowd into it, playing face at least tonight (I’m three weeks behind on Evolve, but I’m pretty sure he hasn’t turned face there). Riggins hit a twisting splash out of the corner – an impressive spot as he’s a big man – but he got bumped to the outside and Presley was left prone to the Creeds’ tag finisher.
WINNERS: The Creed Brothers at 3:35.
(Wells’s Analysis: I didn’t get to see much of this as I was dealing with a computer issue, but the Creeds quickly demolishing people is very much one of my favorite things in wrestling, and I’m hoping the tire-kicking goes well here. Riggins showed that he’s more than able to play babyface, though he’s never done it in Evolve. Presley seems like a good bump machine. The Wagner Brothers, from AAA, were shown watching on a monitor during the match and Vic clearly didn’t know who they were but he played it off decently until someone got in his ears and fed it to him)
-Vic teed up the six-man tag, up next. [c]
-A promoted segment recalled the Borne-Heights segment from last week.
(5) ZILLA FATU & SEAN LEGACY & EK PROSPER vs. BIRTHRIGHT (Lexis King & Uriah Connors & Stacks) (w/Arianna Grace)
Legacy started it off with Stacks, and they had a brief exchange before Prosper and Connors took over and kept up the breakneck pace. King tagged in and kicked Prosper in the back, but Prosper ducked one and took down King for two. Fatu tagged in and hit a body slam, then a second on King. Both others attempted to interfere and he hit a flying clothesline on both. King went to the eyes to get an advantage. Stacks tagged in and Fatu continued to fight both men, but Stacks sped it up and got in a few licks. Connors made the blind tag and Fatu mauled him in the corner as well. Is he invincible? The heels got bumped to the floor and the faces hit them with tope suicidas heading into the break. No split-screen this time. The action went silent as the crowd rang out with a holy sh*t chant. [c]
Prosper hit a cutter on Stacks, then hit him with a super rana. He covered for two, broken up by King. Fatu tried to take out King and the two didn’t quite agree on how the bump was going to go so it was a pretty messy road to get them out of the ring. Connors had tagged in and covered Prosper for two. He hit a snap mare and went into a headlock as Prosper continued to sell. Connors hit a big cutter and covered for two. Fatu hit the ring, had uranages for everyone, and even hit a Bubba Bomb. He did the Yokozuna splash to King. King tagged out to avoid Fatu, leaving Connors to the wolves. Arianna Grace distracted the ref and it allowed Stacks an opening to nail Legacy with his finisher for the win.
WINNERS: Birthright at 10:59.
King got in Fatu’s face, and Fatu was ready to destroy him when the other members of Birthright yanked him to safety. Vic said one day, King will feel the wrath of Zilla Fatu.
(Wells’s Analysis: Weird that we didn’t get split-screen here. This was the chaotic mess that NXT loves, but they gave us three pretty good tag matches tonight, so it’s not the right night to complain. Fatu is practically super Cena in the ring as he just doesn’t take any damage no matter the odds. If that drags on, it’ll be interesting to see if people notice)
-Emily Agard said that Robert Stone has made it official that Zaria will defend against Thea Hail next week. Zaria said it’s different to beat her in a tag match and beat her with gold on the line. Behind them on a monitor, a video played of a high school production with a girl in a terrible wig. Izzi Dame showed up and “apologized” for showing the footage which was apparently Zaria as a kid doing her best in a production.
-Grayson Waller was shown walking through the back ahead of the main event segment. [c]
