SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)...

The following is the latest in a new series of articles exclusively at PWTorch.com which will help put in perspective major wrestling promotions with weekly overviews with a look at developments, results, future line-ups, social media activity, interviews, plus some a timely commentary at the end. We will be featuring similar features on other promotions each week and each will be updated weekly – WWE, NXT, ROH, Impact, and New Japan.

•Top Stories of the Week

-We are coming off ROH’s latest pay-per-view event Death Before Dishonor, which took place at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday Sept. 29, 2018. The event had featured a number of championship matches, as well as the injection of New Japan talent in a ten-man tag match.

Death Before Dishonor did not feature any title changes on the night of the event. However, the next night during a television taping Jeff Cobb defeated Punishment Martinez to become the new ROH World Television Champion. This is Cobb’s first reign as Television Champion, as well as his first championship with the promotion. Punishment Martinez’s first reign as Television Champion lasted 105 days, during this time he defended the title 4 times.

-The next pay-per-view event Glory for Honor XVI takes place only two weeks after the previous PPV event. The ROH World Championship will be defended by Jay Lethal against his bitter rival SIlas Young. Lethal and Young will not have much TV time in order to push this angle further. As of yet, not much has been made except for media on the official website ROHwrestling.com.

-On the latest episode of Being The Elite. Cody Rhodes, Matt Jackson, and Nick Jackson discussed that their current exclusive contracts with ROH are up at the end of the year. The three briefly discussed the topic and moved on with the rest of the episode. In the end an countdown clock was introduced, the clock is assumed to be a countdown to when they are official free agents.

-On the subject of contract talks, it was reported by multiple outlets that ROH-signed talent Adam Page was offered a contract by WWE. While there are conflicting reports that have not been substantiated with named sources, it appears that Page has not completely turned down an offer by WWE. The latest reports are that Page is simply requesting more time to make a decision. The expiration of Page’s as well as other members of the Bullet Club’s contract could be Page’s reason to wait on making a decision.

•Closing Commentary

-Ring of Honor is at a crossroads, and no I am not making a cute reference to Cody’s finisher. ROH is arguably as popular as it has ever been. For as long as the promotion has been around it has been a haven for hardcore fans of wrestling, those who can’t support the machine that is WWE. ROH champion after champion have gone on to financially greener pastures since the inception of the company.

ROH’s most popular wrestlers have an active bit on their weekly YouTube show about when they will be free agents. Is this a joke to try to work people like me who write recaps on the internet? Is this a great marketing campaign for an already powerful brand? Is this pent up resentment that only one member of the Bullet Club has been ROH Champion? No matter the reason, ROH is on an upward trajectory at the moment. But, If it’s five most popular performers leave the promotion within the next calendar year, it won’t matter what the countdown clock meant. It will mean it will be a long, long time before the company can sell out Madison Square Garden again.

Do I think that the Bullet Club will sign WWE contracts and have a run in at WrestleMania 35 to prevent Roman Reigns from retaining the WWE Universal Championship? No, no I do not. However, I am saying that if I were in upper management at ROH I would focus on placing its most popular performers in more prominent roles in all aspects of the company.
