SUMMARY of #538 cover-dated March 6, 1999: This issue is the symbolic beginning of an acceleration of the fall of the pro wrestling industry from the heights it had reached in the previous few years. Although there were warning signs for several months, the string of headline stories in Pro Wrestling Torch over the next few months were as alarming and ominous as any stretch of period in pro wrestling history. The Cover Story this week looks at Inside Edition’s feature on the WWF marketing raunch to kids, plus a Cover Sidebar on Eric Bischoff attempting to distance himself from the growing bad rep of the WWF in the mainstream media. Also in this issue: One of my favorite “Torch Talks” ever was with Jim Brunzell, hardly a household headline name, but one of the top tag team wrestlers during the AWA’s boom period in the early-’80s. He also was part of the WWF during its first years of expansion, having been one of the wrestlers targetted by Vince when he was luring away wrestlers from regional promotions all over the country. It is that period of time that I focused on during the “Torch Talk” interview with the fearless, intelligent, insightful Brunzell. In this part one he talked about standing up and protesting the payoff procedures in the WWF in the mid-’80s.
