[HOUR ONE]

-They cut to a view of the crowd as Excalibur introduced the show. He breathlessly hyped the matches scheduled as “Winter is Coming” graphics were shown for each match.

(1) TIMELESS LOVE BOMBS (“Timeless” Toni Storm & Mina Shirakawa) vs. BABES OF WRATH (Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron) – AEW Women’s Tag Team Championship Tournament final

After ring entrances, the bell rang 4 minutes into the hour. Shirakawa and Cameron battled at first. Then Storm and Willow tagged in, which got a rise out of the crowd. They exchanged forearms. For no apparent reason, Harley ran in and tried to stop Storm. Shirakawa joined in. They all fought, eventually at ringside. Willow flipped onto an awaiting Storm and Shirakawa at ringside. Back in the ring, Harley scored a two count on Storm.

They battled for a couple more minutes with Willow eventually taking down both Storm and Shirakawa. Willow flexed as they cut to a double-box break. [c/db]

Storm rallied after the break against Cameron. Willow interfered as Storm set up a Chicken Wing. Shirakawa caught Willow with a DDT. All four battled again and they did an entwined leglock spot mid-ring. Excalibur noted that Collision aired live coast-to-coast on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 ET / 1:30 PT.

All four collided and were down and slow to get up as fans chanted “AEW!” AEW!” Shirakawa landed a top rope slingblade on Cameron as Storm held her. Storm landed Storm Zero. Willow interrupted the pin with a senton onto Shirakawa’s back. (This is a visually dumb way to interrupted a count because Shirakawa was still covering Cameron and Cameron didn’t gain any extra room to lift her shoulder since she also got squashed underneath the senton impact; fortunately, Shirakawa sat up in pain before the three count and relinquished the cover, but that reaction was unforeseeable for Willow, thus her strategy made no sense.)

Storm went after Willow at ringside. Willow blocked a tornado DDT and then overhead-suplexed Storm. Meanwhile, in the ring, Harley and Shirakawa exchanged forearms. Shirakawa landed a spinning backfist. Excalibur noted that Cameron sustained a broken nose earlier in the year. Cameron countered Shirakawa with a neckbreaker and then tagged in Willow who landed a sitout powerbomb for the three count.

WINNERS: Willow & Cameron in 14:00 to capture the AEW Women’s Tag Team Titles.

(Keller’s Analysis: Exciting, hard-hitting, action-packed match start to finish. Some of the spots were a bit contrived, but nothing too bad to undercut the crowd investment.)

-Renee Paquette interviewed Willow and Harley in the ring afterward. She noted to Harley that it was her first championship in AEW. Willow said it was a hard fight. She said she is proud of herself and Harley. They embraced. Willow said it’s been a rough year not knowing who is there for her and who isn’t, but Harley has been there all along. Harley said she stands there in disbelief that they’re the AEW Tag Team Champions. They chanted “Babes of Wrath.” The crowd joined in. Storm and Shirakawa congratulated them and raised their arms.

(Keller’s Analysis: Really good post-match interview; an example of that format working well. Willow seemed as natural and genuine and likable as she has in a while.)

=In a backstage promo, Samoa Joe was flanked by The Opps. Joe said Eddie Kingston wanted the “crusader of the independents” and “the person whose footsteps you followed.” He said what he doesn’t understand is that that man has been standing before him the entire time. He said he is “ruthless by design.” He said Eddie is trying to take what he has. He said the man that will beat his ass tonight is going to show him the reality of what this industry is.

(Keller’s Analysis: Better promo from Joe there for sure. He was intense, but only yelled a couple words for emphasis. I didn’t love the closing line about “showing him. the reality of what this industry is.” I get what he’s going for, but it’s jargon-laden and not specific. Overall, though, a good counter to Eddie’s promos setting this up. I’m still craving Joe talking about what the AEW World Title means to him and what him being champion means to AEW. He’s not treating this world title as anything more than a TNT Title or ROH TV Title. His promos are somewhat generic “heel champion” intimidating the babyface challenger. That’s fine, but there’s more to be had here.) [c]

-Jon Moxley stood in his favorite backstage area – a stairwell. Danny Garcia, Marina Shafir, and Wheeler Yuta were sitting on stairs behind him. Moxley said he has proven time after time that if there is one grain of sand left in the hour glass, he can still score, “so go ahead and count me out.” He said if you need circumstances to be ideal to try, then you suck. He said he has to try for them, pointing to his cohorts behind him. He said they are the hardest working group of individuals in pro wrestling. Garcia stood and interjected that some think they’re too cool to try, but if you want something, you have to go take it, and that’s what they do every single time.

(Keller’s Analysis: That was a babyface promo, right? Mox was really good there, and Garcia seemed a like a serious person, too.)

(2) JACK PERRY vs. KAZUCHIKA OKADA – Continental Classic Tournament match

As Perry made his entrance, Renee commented from ringside that Perry is feeling the weight of the moment facing the best tournament wrestler of his generation. She said Perry said he’s ready to soak up the moment, but it’s his first singles match in over a year.

(Keller’s Analysis: This is a cool variation of Renee’s contributions to the show and they should stick with this; it’s a cool concept and Renee is good at it.)

Okada made his entrance next. The bell rang 30 minutes into the hour. Don Callis joined in on commentary. Perry and Okada fought at ringside early. Excalibur said Perry probably has residual anger with Callis and what his family have done to him and his friends. Callis said, “Friends cost you money.” Callis said he likes “twentysomething highly-skilled, highly-marketable athletes and that’s what I see when I look at Jack Perry; what a stud he is on every level.” (Callis knows the homoerotic undertones to his character, right?)

Perry mounted Okada in the corner and punched away. Okada slipped free and kicked Perry to the floor. Perry clutched his ankle after landing. Okada threw Perry over the ringside barricade. They cut to a double-box break at 5:00. [c/db]

Okada controlled the action after the break for several minutes. He landed a top rope elbow, then gave the crowd the middle-finger gesture. Perry made a comeback with a reverse huracanrana and then a running knee strike for a near fall. Fans chanted, “This is awesome!” Perry attempted a Snare Trap, but Okada blocked it and bit his hand. Perry then bit Okada’s crotch as Okada had him lifted upside down for an apparent Tombstone. “What’s good for the goose!” said Schiavone. Perry rolled up Okada for a two count. Perry then applied a Snare Trap. Okada reached the bottom rope.

Okada took over and went for a Rainmaker. Perry ducked and then charged with a knee, but Okada turned it into a tilt-a-whirl slam and then a Rainmaker for the win.

WINNER: Okada in 13:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: Good match.)

-Excalibur reviewed the standings with a graphic on the screen. Okada and Fletcher have 6 points, Knight and Pac have 3. Speedball and Perry/Darby have 0 points.

-Afterward, Callis and members of his family entered the ring. He told Perry he put up a great fight. He said after watching his performance, he is reevaluating the talent he should be pursuing. He said Perry has it all, but he lacks focus and direction. He offered Perry a spot in the Don Callis Family. Rocky Romero and Josh Alexander nodded and smiled. Callis said he would offer him a one-time signing bonus paid out of the duffel bag filled with The Young Bucks’ money. He said if that’s not enough, what is he waiting for? He said someone is handing him the greatest opportunity of his life. He said there are seven of them and one of him. He said if he doesn’t accept, he’s going to “cut your strings and put you in a chair.” Romero held the bag and yelled emphatically, “Take the money!”

Perry said it looks like for the second time tonight, he might bite off a little more than he can chew. He attacked the Don Callis Family members. Luchasaurus charged out to ringside. The heels stopped and stared at him. The Young Bucks entered from the other side of the ring with chairs in hand. Okada begged off, but was in perfect position for a BTE Trigger. Callis then found himself trapped, so he handed over the duffel bag. Takeshita absorbed stereo superkicks aimed at Callis.

(Keller’s Analysis: This was well done.)

-They cut backstage to The Conglomeration celebrating the tag team title win. Storm and Shirakawa joined in.

-A vignette aired on Mercedes Moné. [c]

-Renee interviewed Eddie Kingston. She said this is “the moment we’ve all been waiting for.” She asked how he’s feeling. He said fear is natural and keeps you on your toes. He said tonight is the 50th Anniversary of Terry Funk winning the world title for the first time. He said he’s watching and his parents are watching. He said he’s getting too emotional. He said he wants to just get ready for the match, but he respects Renee too much so he’s giving her time. He looked into the camera and said Joe will have the fight of his life. “I ain’t going down easy, man,” he said.

(Keller’s Analysis: Stellar. So purely Eddie. It stands out so much. He’s vulnerable, he’s real, and he wasn’t yelling!)

-Schiavone stood mid-ring and introduced Mark Briscoe. Excalibur said his title win was a feel good moment of the year. Briscoe said not long ago, people were saying he couldn’t win the big one, but there he stands in front of “the fine folks of Atlanta, Georgia” with shiny hardware – the TNT Title belt. He said the doubters are still out there, but he’d like to give them a clear, concise message: “Y’all can kiss my big white ass.” He said it’s one thing to become champion, and it’s another to be a defending champion. He said he’ll be defending against Garcia on Collision. Yuta interrupted.

[HOUR TWO]

Yuta walked to the ring followed by Garcia and Shafir. He said told Briscoe has the mental capacity of one of the chickens he farms. Fans chanted, “F— you, Yuta!” Garcia entered and said he has a lot of mean, hurtful things he could probably say about Briscoe too, but he’s not going to. He said when he looks at his face, everything is just sad. (That seems to qualify as “hurtful.” Just sayin’.) He said he’ll have to figure out how to provide for his family with a broken leg after Saturday. Briscoe said he has an ass-whipping coming his way on Saturday. He said they just happen to be on TBS tonight and it’d be a shame to deny the fans an ass whipping right there. He asked him to make his move. Garcia knocked the mic out of his hand. Briscoe palmed-faced Garcia. Shafir and Yuta held Garcia back.

-They cut to the announcers at ringside. Excalibur interrupted Bryan Danielson and they showed the Triangle of Madness attacking Kris Statlander. Excalibur hyped Statlander  & Jamie Hayter vs. Sisters of Sin on Collision.

(3) SWERVE STRICKLAND & “HANGMAN” ADAM PAGE vs. POWERHOUSE HOBBS & KATSUYORI SHIBATA – Tornado Tag

Garcia, Yuta, Hobbs, Shafir, and Shibata went after Swerve and Hangman in the crowd. Swerve used a staple gun. Hangman beat up Hobbs in one area as Swerve beat up Shibata in the concourse. Excalibur noted the match hadn’t officially even started. They cut to a double-box break. [c/db]

They made their way to the ring and the bell rang to officially start the match 10 minutes into the hour. Hobbs had Hangman down on the mat. Danielson said there are still rules and a DQ is possible, and the Tornado stip just means all four can fight at once.

At 7:00, Hangman and Swerve powerbombed Hobbs off the ring apron through a table at ringside. Hangman then hit a Buckshot Lariat on Shibata. Swerve hit Shibata with a House Call and scored a three count. He more hovered over him than covered him during the count.

WINNERS: Hangman & Swerve in 8:00.

-They showed Alexander watching backstage rubbing his chin and nodding. He faces Swerve on Collision on Saturday.

-Callis backstage looked into the camera and accused the Bucks of stealing his money. He said possession is not nine-tenths of the law. He said he has all the best athletes. He challenged them to a six-man tag match and the winner gets a million dollars. [c]

-Stokely Hathaway cut a backstage promo and said the world’s most dangerous narcotic is the camera because it causes an addiction where people think they deserve TV time and can win a championship. He told Juice Robinson & Austin Gunn that they’ll get the title shot next week that they’ve been yearning for. He said FTR would cure them of that addiction. He said next time they go through customs, they won’t need to declare their championships, but they will declare they are at the back of the line “where you truly belong.”

(Keller’s Analysis: Look at that! A promo without yelling and without death threats or promises to maim, but it totally worked because it felt grounded in reality with realistic stakes and it was all about winning being the entire goal of the match.)

(4) KYLE FLETCHER vs. “SPEEDBALL” MIKE BAILEY – Continental Classic Tournament match

Fletcher made his entrance first. The bell rang 26 minutes into the hour. Fletcher towered over Speedball. Fletcher had to fall backwards to avoid an early karate kick. They cut to a double-box break at 6:00 after battling at ringside. [c/db]

Speedball took control and leaped off the top rope with a shooting star press, but Fletcher lifted his boot. He then lawn darted Speedball into the middle buckle and then landed a sitout powerbomb for a believable near fall at 13:00. Fletcher landed a half-and-half seconds later, but Speedball countered with a mid-air snap powerslam for a two count. Bailey landed a huracanrana for a two count and then a somersault kneedrop. He followed with a round kick to the head for a two count.

Speedball caught a charging Fletcher with a kick and stayed on the attack including a second rope Ultimate Weapon for a near fall at 17:00. They cut to fans reacting with amazement. Fletcher avoided Speedball’s leap off the ring apron and then release-powerbombed him against the ring apron. In the ring, he delivered a sheer drop brainbuster suplex for a two count. Fletcher looked shocked. “What?! What?!” gasped Danielson.

Fletcher and Speedball continued to go back and forth as the “1 minutes remains” announcement was made. Speedball rolled up Fletcher for a three count. Fletcher rolled to the floor in shock as Speedball absorbed his win in disbelief.

WINNER: Speedball in 19:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: Okay, that was a blast.)

-Renee asked Hangman what is next for him. He said the AEW World Title. He said he’ll be watching the Joe-Kingston match. He said at Worlds End, he is coming for whoever wins. [c]

-Backstage, The Bucks accepted Callis’s challenge. They asked Luchasaurus to be their partner. He shook his head no and pointed at Kenny Omega’s locker room door. The Bucks knocked. Omega answered. Omega said he doesn’t want money, but he’d wrestle for free because he doesn’t like the Don Callis Family.

(5) SAMOA JOE vs. EDDIE KINGSTON – AEW World Title match

Justin Roberts did formal ring introductions. Kingston came out first. Then Joe. The bell rang 54 minutes into the hour. They cut to a double-box break at 4:00. [c/db]

[OVERRUN]

When Kingston charged at Joe in the corner, Joe caught him and slammed him with a uranage. As Joe battered Kingston methodically, fans chanted for Eddie. Eddie stood and chopped Joe. Joe absorbed them and then landed a snap powerslam for a near fall. Kingston came back with a (slo-mo) exploder suplex for a near fall at 12:00.

Kingston DDT’d Joe. Joe rolled to ringside. Back in the ring, Joe headbutted Kingston, but Kingston countered with a cutter. He went for a spinning back elbow, but Joe ducked and applied the Coquina Clutch. Kingston tapped out.

WINNER: Joe in 15:00 to retain the AEW World Title.

(Keller’s Analysis: Solid, dramatic, hard-hitting main event. Straight forward title defense for Joe against a popular underdog opponents.)
