[HOUR ONE]
(1) KENNY OMEGA vs. ROCKY ROMERO
As Omega made his ring entrance in a cold open for the show, Excalibur introduced the show. The bell rang 1 minute into the show and Romero attacked him. Omega fought back right away. Omega slingshot himself over the top rope and nearly overshot Romero below at ringside. Excalibur said Samoa Joe suffered a non-contact injury this week and is out for a while. Taz said it’s tough to get hurt while training. Excalibur plugged scheduled matches and segments as graphics appeared in the lower left corner.
Omega caught a kneeling Romero with a running knee to the back of his head as Romero as Sammy Guevara-ing for the camera. He followed with a V-Trigger and One-Winged Angel for the win.
WINNER: Omega in 4:00.
-Tony Schiavone entered the ring in his suit with bright yellow sneakers and a matching tie. “Who is dressing Schiavone lately?” asked Taz. Schiavone congratulated Omega for being “back in classic wrestling shape.” Schiavone said he’s one fo the four top contenders along with “Hangman” Adam Page, Andrade, and Swerve Strickland. He said at Grand Slam Australia on Feb. 14, the two top contenders will wrestle to earn a shot at the AEW World Title at Revolution on March 15.
Omega said he hasn’t felt this good in years. He said AEW is supposed to be the place where the best wrestle, and he if he didn’t think he was ready, he wouldn’t aim for MJF’s AEW World Title. He said he will become champion. He was interrupted by “Hangman” Page’s music.
Hangman said he’d rather be fighting beside him than thinking about fighting against him, but with the World Title at stake, so be it. He said he made the mistake of looking beyond Samoa Joe and The Opps. He said because of Hook and a kick to the balls from MJF, he lost the title. He said this time is different. He said as much fire and passion as Omega has, he will not be the next champion, nor will it be Andrade or Swerve Strickland. He said he will be. He got a mix of cheers and boos throughout listing those names. Swerve’s music then played.
Swerve and Prince Nana walked out. Swerve said since he returned, he hasn’t been pinned. He said he believes he has just as much of a claim to the World Title as Hangman. He said he is going to come back and win the title. He said he doesn’t care who he has to stomp out, ravage, and go through to get what he wants. He said it can be against anybody. He approached Omega and said, “I do mean anybody.” Omega said he fancies himself being pretty astute at reading the room and as much as he and Hangman have their eyes on the belt, there seems to be animosity between them. He said it seems like he is looking for a fight. Swerve laughed and said, “Oh, Kenny, more than you know.” Don Callis interrupted.
“I have something to say,” Callis said as he walked out onto the stage. Fans booed. He said Swerve should enjoy being undefeated while he can because Andrade will pin him later. Callis said Daddy is there to tell Omega that Andrade is coming for him next. Callis said he hasn’t forgotten about Hangman, either. He said The Don Callis Family runs the show. Omega’s music played, but Omega asked them to cut his music.
Omega said maybe Callis should have been worried about himself and not others. Omega charged at him, but Callis fled to the back.
(Keller’s Analysis: There was a strange moment there where nothing happened and Omega’s music then played, and Omega told them to cut it. I wouldn’t rule out that Omega was supposed to speak before his music played and then he remembered or someone jostled him. It just felt like oddly timed otherwise. A solid scene-setting segment with a solid showing from Omega with more stress on him being in shape again, and then three top babyfaces all making their cases, ending with build for the TV main event.)
-Excalibur hyped upcoming matches on the show. Then a vignette aired on the Kris Statlander vs. Thekla main event for the AEW Title. Willow offered a shot at their tag titles on Collision if they stay out of the AEW World Title match later.
-Jon Moxley made his entrance, starting in the concourse area. Renee Paquette stood at ringside and said Ace Austin wasn’t able to compete on Saturday on Collision against Katusyori Shibata due to travel issues. She said he was on a four-match win streak in ROH and now he is facing Moxley instead tonight.
(2) JON MOXLEY vs. ACE AUSTIN
Someone held up a sign that said “We Miss you Louie Spicolli. Happy Birthday.” The bell rang 19 minutes into the hour. Moxley kicked Austin in the face and Excalibur laughed like he heard the funniest joke ever. Excalibur explained if he wins or lasts the time limit against Moxley, he will earn a shot at the Continental Title. At 2:00 Austin dropkicked Mox who rolled to ringside. They cut to a double-box break. [c/db]
Austin dominated during the break. Mox superplexed Austin. Both were down and slow to get up. Mox eventually caught a flying Austin with a cutter and then a Death Rider fro the win.
WINNER: Moxley in 10:00.
-As Moxley celebrated, Konosuke Takeshita came out to his music and entered the ring. He pointed at Moxley’s title. As Takeshita left the ring, Davis and Doyle attacked Moxley from behind. [c]
(3) MARK BRISCOE vs. EL CLON – TNT Title match
Don Callis accompanied El Clon onto the stage during his entrance and then joined in on commentary. The bell rang 36 minutes into the hour. Don Callis said he was going to rename AEW Dynamite after himself. Taz said he liked the idea, so Callis said he’d have a one-man booth with Taz. Briscoe set up a chair was going to launch off of it, but Clon blocked it. Briscoe chopped Clon. Taz said he’d rather get hit with a chair than a Briscoe chop. Briscoe landed a leaping cutter off the ring apron onto Clon at ringside. Clon trapped Briscoe’s head under the ring apron and kicked him and then they cut to a double-box break at 3:00. [c/db]
Briscoe landed a top rope elbowdrop for a near fall at 10:0o. Briscoe landed a Jay Driller. El Clon popped up and no sold it. (Huh?) Clon landed a Pelé kick to Briscoe and went after him at ringside. Clon landed a double-stomp off the top rope. Briscoe landed a back elbow. Clon kicked him. Briscoe countered and rolled up Clon for a three count.
WINNER: Briscoe in 12:00 to retain the TNT Title.
-Afterward, Briscoe said he loves the concept of the TNT Title Open Challenge. He said one little “astericks” is no Don Callis Family members, but anyone else. He said he’s sick of Don Callis members. The lights went out and a beating heart showed up on the big screen. Then after silence, “Psycho Killer” showed up on the screen and a shadow figure showed up on the stage. Then the lights revealed it was Tomasso Ciampa. Ciampa stood on the second rope and saluted the fans. They showed fans reacting in the crowd.
As Ciampa and Briscoe had a staredown, fans chanted “Holy shit!” Ciampa pointed at the TNT Title and said, “I’m coming for that.” He kissed Briscoe on the cheek and walked away.
(Keller’s Analysis: Collision gets the gift of a big match that you would have expected to see saved for Dynamite. I’m looking forward to seeing how Ciampa does in AEW. It seems like fertile ground for his strengths as a performer on the mic and in the ring. Is this an attempt to keep Impact on AMC from routinely beating Collision in the ratings?) [c]
-Renee was standing backstage with Kyle Fletcher. She said Kazuchika Okada requested Fletcher’s presence. Okada said when he took the screwdriver at World’s End, he just wanted to win and he wanted to face Fletcher so the Continental Title would stay in the Don Callis Family. He said he didn’t want to hurthim, but he wanted to tell him he is sorry. Fletcher said he was really upset with him after World’s End, but it takes a real man to come out there and admit he was wrong, so he accepted his apology. They shook hands.
-MJF made his ring entrance. MJF asked Taz why they have them working “in a dump like this.” He said they should listen and not talk. “It’s not complicated,” he said. Brody King then made his way out to his music. MJF said with ears so big, he should be better at listening. He said he is stupid. Brody stepped onto the ring apron. MJF asked if he was going to be a professional and speak like men.
[HOUR TWO]
Fans chanted, “Brody! Brody!” He called Brody “Bark Boy.” He said he made it clear last week if you want a shot at the World Title, you have to beat someone who matters. He said he’s following him around just like he followed Malakai Black around. He mocked him for being spooky and turning the lights on and off. He then mocked him for following Buddy Matthews. He asked how his ankle is coming. He said now he follows around a guy who is a complete loser, Bandido. He suggested he should follow him around. He said he’d pay him handsomely because he is big and talented. He said he could use a guy like him, but he’d want to fix an aesthetic. “With love and respect, never in my life have I met a liberal man who looks more like a Nazi,” he said. Brody laughed. MJF chastised the fans. He said he’d make Brody look presentable.
MJF said becoming champion is just a dream of Brody that won’t happen. He said in order to be the champion of the world, “you need to be a leader like me.” He said he is nothing more than a follower, just like the schmucks in the crowd.
Brody told MJF he doesn’t need to follow anyone. He said what he described is friends, something he said MJF has never had. He said MJF says he is right that he hasn’t defeated a big enough name to earn a title shot. He said he sat down with Tony Khan and discussed who the best opponent would be. He said they came up with MJF. MJF asked, “What?” Brody said next week they have an eliminator match and he will beat him and then go on to win the World Title at Grand Slam Australia “and become leader this company needs.” Taz said that is completely unfair.
-A vignette aired on The Young Bucks who said humility helped them go back to their old routes – “tassels, superkicks, superkick parties.” Matt Jackson said everyone is on notice. NicK Jackson said they’ll see them in Las Vegas next week.
-They went to the announcers at ringside to react.
(4) KRIS STATLANDER vs. THEKLA – AEW Women’s Title
Justin Roberts did formal ring introductions. The bell rang 9 minutes into the hour. Statlander landed a delay-drop vertical suplex at ringside a minute in. Thekla tried to fight back, but Statlander blocked her and sent her hard onto the ringside steps. As Statlander flexed her arms on the ring apron, Thekla recovered and kicked her off the ring apron. Taz tried to explain the mindset of a wrestler getting caught up in feeling good about yourself and getting distracted. They cut to a double-box break at 3:00. [c/db]
Thekla then landed a Spider Suplex on Statlander. She then leaped off the top rope and landed on Statlander at ringside. Thekla speared Statlander back in the ring. Both were slow to get up. They exchanged wild swings mid-ring. Thakla rallied and did her spider walk, but when she charged at Statlander, Statlander kicked her and then landed a powerbomb and Staturday Night Fever for the win.
WINNER: Statlander in 12:00 to retain the AEW Title.
-Afterward Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron joined Statlander in celebrating. Julia Hart and Megan Bayne walked onto the stage and eyed them.
(Keller’s Analysis: Solid action. I wouldn’t have been against a Thekla win here to shake things up, but the Statlander push continues for now,.)
-Backstage, Callis stood with Takeshita and Fletcher. He said Andrade is the latest recruit and will get one step closer to bringing the World Title back to the Family. Callis praised Takeshita, but said he should do what Fletcher did and forgive Okada. He asid Davis & Doyle are about to squash FTR. He said he was going to make a martini. Takeshita asked Fletcher if he really forgave Okada. Takeshita hung his head and walked away. Fletcher looked guilty. [c]
-A video aired on “Jungle” Jack Perry and Ricochet.
-A promo aired with Ricochet taped earlier. They showed Perry being held in the. background by GOA. Perry tried to fight back. Ricochet asked what he was thinking when he tried to threaten him. GOA lifted Perry and slammed him through a table. Ricochet said that is what happens when you try to take what is his.
(4) FTR (Dax & Cash) vs. DAVIS & DOYLE – AEW World Tag Team Title match
Justin Roberts introduced Davis & Doyle first. Then FTR rolled Stokely Hathaway to the ring down the ramp. Stokely joined in on commentary. The bell rang 32 minutes into the hour. They cut to a double-box break at 3:00. [c/db]
Davis put Dax in a sleeper. Dax flailed to escape. Moxley and the rest of the Death Riders came to ringside and hit Davis with his belt. FTR then landed Shatter Machine for the win.
WINNERS: FTR in 10:00 to retain the AEW Tag Team Titles.
-Renee interviewed Orange Cassidy backstage. She asked him about Wheeler Yuta. He said he is unrecognizable from who he was five years ago. He critiqued his hair. Yuta confronted him. Marina Shafir yanked on his hair. Toni Storm got in Shafir’s face. They exchanged heated words and then security intervened. [c]
(5) SWERVE STRICKLAND (w/Prince Nana) vs. ANDRADE
The bell rang 52 minutes into the hour. Callis said there aren’t a lot of guys he thinks he can stretch, but Nana is on his list. Fans chanted “Swerve’s House!” after the bell. Andrade got the better of Swerve at ringside and they cut to a double-box break at 3:00. [c/db]
Swerve landed a Death Valley Driver on the ring apron. Swerve battled back and took it to Andrade at ringside. Andrade backdropped Swerve on the top of the ringside barricade. Andrade crotched the barricade when he landed. Both were down and slow to get up. They battled inside the ring back and forth. Swerve landed a House Call. Andrade grabbed the ref’s wrist and then gave Swerve a mule kick. He followed up with his finisher and scored a three count. Schiavone said the next couple of months in AEW will be incredible.
WINNER: Andrade in 15:00.
-Excalibur plugged MJF vs. Brody and Ricochet vs. Perry for next week.
-Renee interviewed MJF to get his reaction backstage. Omega interrupted and said, “One more week, one more win, and then I’ll see you for that at Revolution,” pointing at bis title belt. He offered a handshake. MJF walked away. The camera followed him (which cameras never do) and he “just happened” to bump into Andrade in the next area. Andrade said he wants the title. Fans chanted, “Idolo.’ The camera continued to follow MJF outside where he had an SUV awaiting. A hand slammed the door shot as MJF opened it. It was Hangman. MJF got in the car and told the driver to go. The car sped off. The last scene was Hangman looking intense and satisfied as fans applauded.
