[HOUR ONE]
-The show opened cold with a scene of the ring from the upper balcony and then the camera panning the audience of around 1,500.
-They cut backstage to MJF with his AEW World Title belt cutting a promo about Brody King. Then Brody spoke about how he’s going to hurt MJF bad and for the first time in his life he can’t talk his way out of it. Then Kenny Omega said Andrade is the next step in his path to regaining the AEW Title. He said Don Callis’s efforts to stop him will be impotent. Callis said his men are going to leave the Death Riders lying after the six-man tag. He got bleeped when he described Omega. He said Andrade will leave him for dead and that will make him happy. Then Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron spoke about facing MegaBad later. Then MegaBad spoke.
(Keller’s Analysis: I love the soundbites with the wrestlers to build the scheduled matches. At three minutes long, though, I think it was too long. One way or another, I’m aim for two minutes tops, whether that mean shorter soundbites or spreading out the soundbites on certain matches until later in the hour. It was very mid-1980s Saturday Night’s Main Event of C.M. Punk-era Collision. I also don’t know how you run an event in Las Vegas and don’t set the scene with a view of the exterior of the arena with all the lights and energy of the street.)
(1) DANNY GARCIA & WHEELER YUTA (w/Jon Moxley, Pac, Marina Shafir) vs. KONOSUKE TAKESHITA & JOSH ALEXANDER & EL CLON (w/Don Callis)
The bell rang 7 minutes into the hour. The crowd got pretty quiet once the bell rang, as there wasn’t much ambient noise at all. It also doesn’t help that it’s a heel vs. heel match-up other than Moxley being popular for just being himself. Alexander tripped Pac running the ropes (and by trip, I mean touched his boots on the sides lightly as Pac face-planted hismelf). El Con landed a springboard moonsault. Alexander yanked Pac to ringside and beat him up. Mox jumped to Pac’s aid. Takeshita and El Clon turned to beat him up as they cut to a double-box break. [c/db]
Mox and Takeshita went at it. Mox stomped on Takeshita as Garcia had him in a half crab. El Clon leaped onto Pac at ringside during a flurry of chaos. Mox then dove through the ropes onto a crowd of opponents at ringside. Takeshita went for a cover on Garcia and scored a two count. Alexander, El Clon, and Takeshita triple-teamed Garcia a minute later. Takeshita scored a two count after a power drive knee. Takeshita went right back at Garcia with a Raging Fire for the win.
Mox consoled a disappointed Garcia afterward. Excalibur said Mox looked disappointed.
WINNERS; Takeshita & Alexander & El Clon in 13:00.
-A clip aired of Andrade beating Swerve Strickland last week.
-Renee Paquette interviewed Swerve Strickland and Prince Nana backstage. Renee told Swerve his loss last week takes him out of the title picture. Nana said losing one match doesn’t mean they lose focus and they aren’t going anywhere.
-Excalibur plugged MJF vs. King, Ricochet vs. “Jungle” Jack Perry, “Hangman” Adam Page vs. Mark Davis, and the women’s tag match. [c]
-A video package aired on Will Ospreay’s hiatus and clips of him going in for surgery. Excalibur said he had successful neck surgery, but there’s no known timeline for his return, but it will happen.
(2) ORANGE CASSIDY & TONI STORM vs. JORDAN OASIS & BRITTANY BROOKES
Cassidy wandered out to his music. Then the music switched and Storm came out to her music.
The bell rang 28 minutes into the hour. Excalibur noted the loser of the fall of the tag match at Grand Slam Australia between Wheeler Yuta & Marina Shafir and Cassidy & Storm will have their head shaved bald. Cassidy ducked Oasis after invited him to slap him. Strom and Brookes tagged in next and Storm tossed her around. Storm and Cassidy danced mid-ring after some charges into the corner. Storm landed a leaping DDT, prompting a “Ho Ho Ho!” from Excalibur. Storm gave Oasis a hip attack and then Cassidy hit him with an Orange Punch. As Cassidy made the cover, Storm pressed down on him for extra leverage (is that legal?) for the three count.
WINNERS: Cassidy & Storm in 4:00.
-Afterward, Cassidy told Storm he likes his hair and he’s not sure if their match at Grand Slam is a good idea. That caused panic with Storm who fretted that her hair is her livelihood and her bald head will look like a boiled egg or a angry penis. The camera cut to Luther. She said she’ll look disgusting. Luther was insulted. She crumpled to the ground, but then popped up and said she is Timeless and Cassidy is Freshly Squeezed “and it’s not going to go down like that!” She said either Cassidy will give Yuta “a cute little comb-over” or she will make Marina “look like Mox.”
(Keller’s Analysis: My money is on Shafir being shaved bald.)
-Earlier in the day, Darby was being filmed skateboarding outside the arena when the War Dogs attacked him. They threw him the trunk of their car and sped off.
(Keller’s Analysis: There’s no way to properly sell a beatdown and an abduction of someone in the context of a pro wrestling show, but Excalibur and Tony Schiavone didn’t even try. They might as well have watched the War Dogs spit on Darby’s skateboard rather than abduct him in the trunk of a car. Just stupid.)
(3) “HANGMAN” ADAM PAGE vs. MARK DAVIS
The bell rang 37 minutes into the hour. Davis caught Hangman with a dropkick at the bell and then chopped away at him. Fans chanted “Cowboy Shit!” early. Davis and Hangman exchanged chops to the chest. Davis took it to Hangman at ringside as they cut to an early double-box break. [c/db]
Back from the break, they returned to ringside. Hangman avoided a charging Davis, who crashed into and over the barricade. Hangman then flipped off the ledge of the lower bowl seating onto Davis. He threw him into the ring and landed a moonsault off the top rope for a two count.
Davis made a comeback and landed a German suplex, a lariat, and a salto sitout slam for a two count. When Davis went for another lariat, Hangman met him with one of his own. Davis brushed it off, but Hangman landed a quick Dead Eye for a two count. Both were down and slow to get up. Hangman went for a Buckshot, but Davis side-stepped it and threw Hangman aside. He then lifted Davis and landed a tombstone on the ramp. Then he hit the Buckshot for the win.
WINNER: Hangman in 11:00.
-Hangman said after this he packs his bags and heads to Australia to try to earn a shot at the AEW World Title. He said he hopes to see Omega there. He then addressed MJF. He said he will “stomp every last future child out of your tiny little balls” and take back the title he should have never lost.
(Keller’s Analysis: Hangman comes across as someone who, if you mistakenly took his parking spot just as he was about to enter from another direction would get out of his car with a sledgehammer and bash your windshield in. Or if you coughed without covering your your near him, he’d break your jaw and yell “I hope you die slowly from starvation, you scum of the universe!” Like, dude, dial it down, okay?) [c]
(4) ANDRADE EL IDOLO (w/Don Callis) vs. KENNY OMEGA
The bell rang 57 minutes into the hour. [c]
At 3:00, Omega set up a superplex. Andrade resisted Omega headbutted him and then landed the superplex. Callis said Omega doubted himself for a while but now seems back on track and isn’t hesitant anymore. Callis said diverticulitis likely came on slowly and affected Omega for a long time. Andrade landed a tornado dive onto Omega and then celebrated with some women in the front row. They cut to a double-box break. [c/db]
Andrade put Omega in a figure-four mid-ring. Omega came back and landed a V-Trigger. He then lifted Andrade onto his shoulders and set up a move, but Andrade powerbombed Omega to the mat. He followed with a DDT for a two count. Andrade landed running knee strikes into the corner and scored a two count at 14:00.
Omega caught Andrade with a high knee and then signaled for a V-Trigger, but as he charged, Andrade landed a spinning back elbow. Callis tossed Andrade a screwdriver. The ref didn’t see. Callis then distracted the ref. Swerve came out and yanked the screwdriver away. As the ref yelled at him, Andrade gave Omega a low-blow and a DM for the win.
WINNER: Andrade in 17:00.
-Omega yelled at Swerve, blaming him for his loss. Swerve calmly explained what happened and Omega listened and realized he was ill-informed and overreacting and asked for a foregivness for snapping. They shook hands and shared a disarming chuckle. No, none of that happened. They yelled at each other shoved each other and then security pulled them apart.
-They went to ringside where Excalibur threw to a video package on Brody King.
-A Brody King video opened with him saying, “Sometimes, violence is the answer.” [c]
-Renee interviewed Kris Statlander backstage. Renee said she agreed to give Thekla a rematch if she agrees not to go to ringside tonight as long as she can choose the special stipulation. She teased revealing the stip, then told her to pray “Cosmic Killer” is just a nickname.
(5) WILLOW NIGHTINGALE & HARLEY CAMERON vs. MEGAN BAYNE & PENELOPE FORD
The bell rang 24 minutes into the hour. They cut to a break at 3:00. [c/db]
Ford landed a leaping double blockbuster off the top rope at 8:00. All four were down and slow to get up. WIllow got first and landed a spinebuster on Bayne for a two count. Ford gave Cameron a Doomsday Device off of Bayne’s shoulders to end the match.
WINNERS: Bayne & Ford in 10:00 to earn an AEW Tag Team Title match at Grand Slam Australia.
-Highlights aired of Tommaso Ciampa pinning Mark Briscoe to win the AEW TNT Title.
-A backstage promo aired with Ciampa who said he won the title after answering an open challenge. He said he’ll honor the tradition. He named the belt Silvee and said she loves her new home and isn’t going anywhere for a long time. He kissed the belt.
-Excalibur plugged that Roderick Strong and Claudio Castagnoli have answered the open challenge. Also on Collision, Kevin Knight vs. Scorpio Sky, a parking lot brawl with Bryan Keith & Big Bill & Grizzled Young Vets vs. The Rascalz & Eddie Kingston & Ortiz.
(6) RICOCHET vs. “JUNGLE” JACK PERRY – AEW National Title match
Perry dove over the top rope onto Ricochet on the rap. The ref oddly called for the bell to start the match at that point, 39 minutes into the hour. (Huh?) Perry threw the belt into the ring and then kicked Ricochet off the stage and then flip dove onto him. They cut to a break a 4:00 after Perry backdropped a charging Ricochet and knocked him to the floor. Perry slid under the bottom rope, but Ricochet caught him and slammed him onto the announce desk. [c/db]
Perry eventually had Ricochet in a sleeper mid-ring. Toa Liona yanked Ricochet to the bottom rope and gave Perry the middle finger. The ref then forced the break. The Young Bucks came out and attacked GOA with a chair. Ricochet placed his belt on the middle turnbuckle and threw Perry face-first into it. He hten finished Perry with Vertigo for the win.
WINNER: Ricochet in 13:00 to retain the AEW National Title.
-The War Dogs (Gabe Kidd and Clark Connors) were in the production truck and choking out two directors. Then they showed a camera on their car dragging Darby behind them. They unzipped the bodybag to confirm Darby was alive inside, then cut the cable and left him in the desert to die.
-They cut to Excalibur and Schiavone at ringside. Excalibur said it was an unhinged attack and they’ll “endeavor to provide you with an update we can find on Darby’s condition.”
(Keller’s Analysis: So, OBVIOUSLY, Kidd and Connors will never be allowed past security again in any AEW venue and charges will be pressed by Darby for those felonies.) [c]
[OVERRUN]
(7) MJF vs. BRODY KING
After ring introductions by Justin Roberts, the bell rang 2 minutes into the hour. The crowd loudly chanted “Fuck Ice!” MJF raised his eyebrows. As they were about to lock up, Hangman’s music played and he walked out. .MJF stood on the ring apron and yelled at Hangman. Brody then put him a sleeper. MJF went out immediately and collapsed to the ground in a cartoonish manner. Brody threw MJF into the ring and landed a cannonball after MJF wriggled himself into proper position. Brody then landed a Gonzo Bomb for the win. The voices of Excalibur and Schiavone cracked as they reacted to Brody earning a title shot.
WINNER: King in 1:00.
-Andrade hit Brody from behind with a spinning back elbow after the match. Andrade gave Brody a DM. Hangman then gave Andrade a Buckshot. Hangman looked down at MJF, then set up a Buckshot. MJF blocked it with a low blow. Brody gave MJF a Gonzo Bomb (which Excalibur found funny, apparently) and threw him to the floor.
(Keller’s Analysis: I don’t know what that was, but it felt like a really awful booker forced his way into Tony Khan’s chair for this show, or at least this main event. The Darby stuff was so stupid, too, though.)
