Ring of Honor Quick News Hits – May 2016

Monday, May 9

– ROH announced that Steve Corino (Mr. Wrestling III on commentary) is missing Monday’s ROH live show in Dearborn, Michigan.

ROH did not say whether it’s a personal matter or related to the multiple angles at the end of the “Global Wars” PPV where Corino was given an ominous flash drive by B.J. Whitmer before the main event and then superkicked by Bullet Club during the main event.

Sunday, May 8

– Full Coverage of ROH’s “Global Wars” PPV co-promoted with New Japan.

– ROH COO Joe Koff talked to Jim Varsallone of the Miami Herald ahead of the PPV.

Saturday, May 7

– Among wrestlers, there is a mix of internal feelings about Ring of Honor heading into the big “War of the Worlds” tour.

Most of the mixture centers on how certain wrestlers are booked and whether their ideas are valued behind-the-scenes. This points back to head booker Delirious, whose management style led to veteran wrestler Christopher Daniels being added to the mix as an agent/liaison for talent.

Plus, wrestlers wanting to see the benefits of the relationship with New Japan, but wondering why they keep being booked to lose matches, especially on U.S. shows.

– PWTorch has learned that two wrestlers likely heading out the door when their contracts are due are Roderick Strong and Moose.

Sources say Strong was not pleased with how his ROH TV Title run abruptly ended when he dropped the title to Tomohiro Ishii in February in Japan.

Meanwhile, Moose is expected to entertain long-term offers from multiple promotions, including ROH, when his contract is due.

Friday, May 6

– ROH World champion Jay Lethal threw out the first pitch prior to Friday’s Chicago White Sox game. Lethal promoted his next ROH Title defense against hometown star Colt Cabana this Sunday at the “Global Wars” PPV.

Thursday, May 5

– ROH announced even more matches for next week’s “War of the Worlds” Tour. The latest line-up is here.

Wednesday, May 4

– ROH’s parent company, Sinclair Broadcasting, reported First Quarter 2016 revenue of $578.9 million (about WWE’s annual revenue) and Q1 profit of $24.1 million.

Sinclair mentioned ROH as one of the highlights of their content and distribution deals: “In April, Ring of Honor announced a multi-year partnership to air a weekly series on Canada’s Fight Network.”

Moose, the former NFL player turned ROH star, called out out NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in a new interview with Sports Illustrated. He also credited New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick for preparing him for pro wrestling.

“Playing under Bill Belichick helped me a lot with how I get ready for a match,” Moose said. “Bill Belichick got you better prepared than any other coach in the NFL, and that’s one of the reasons why I come so prepared to my matches. I watch tape of my opponent, I study my opponent and I go into the match knowing more about him than he knows about himself.”
