The following are highlights of Becky Lynch’s interview with James Kincaid for the “In the Kliq” radio show on 107.7 The Bone (KSAN) as provided to PWTorch.com by the show’s producer…
•ON HER JOURNEY TO BECOMING A MAIN EVENTER: “It’s a slow build, but my whole career’s been a slow build. But that’s often times the best, you know what I mean? Because I really felt like the fans got to be with me on every step of the way. They saw the whole journey from start to finish and we’re not finished yet. We still have so much work to do, and they were such a part of that and building that. But coming back and even then though it was, it was the Royal Rumble going into the Royal Rumble and being, you know, the number two, like one of the first two people to ever step in the all women’s Royal Rumble that was incredible. But then, you know, stuff like, I didn’t have my own match at WrestleMania and I wanted that, and I was in the battle royal and the kickoff show. To have gone from that to the main event of WrestleMania, and I know Ronnie has dissed me for that, but that’s working your way up. That’s not coming in, and automatically getting your own WrestleMania match having never paid your dues. She’s paid her dues in other ways, but she’s never paid her dues in my sport. She hasn’t slept on people’s floors. She hasn’t left home at the age of 15 to go and do this. That’s paying your dues. So, you do not ever make fun of me because I am proud, I am proud of working my way from the pre-show to the main event of WrestleMania. Ronnie, you might be there for your, for your name, but we’re the main event because of the work that I’ve done.”
•ON BEING FUELED TO PROVE HER DOUBTERS WRONG: “Absolutely. I think it’s one thing to prove people right, and that’s awesome. I’ve got a lot of fans that I want to prove right, and a lot of people that I want to prove right, but there is just something else about proving people wrong. When people say that you can’t do it, that’s when you absolutely have to. You know, and it’s even, it’s even I think self-doubt more than other people’s doubt is the biggest obstacle. Other people’s voices, they’ll go away right. They might say something and then it’ll be gone, but you live in your own head. So, it’s a matter of like what I found is just learning to tell myself the good things and, and letting myself believe, you know, and, and stopping with the well, but what if, and say no, but what if it all goes right? You’ve got to just let it out, let it go. And you’ve only got one life, freaking live it to its entirety and shine as bright as you possibly can. And I think that was what I struggled with more than anybody else doubting me. It was my own self-belief.”
•USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO GET STORYLINES OVER / WANTING THE MAIN EVENT OF WRESTLEMANIA TO BE EARNED: “We have maybe, what, ten minutes, if we’re lucky on TV a week, I have a live microphone 24 hours a day to be able to get my message across to be able to get people interested, to be able to get people invested. Why would I not be using that? I think that’s, that’s where it is, and then once I realized that I can kind of push the envelope, and find more innovative ways to get people to care and to promote what I’m doing because I’m out here, busting my ass trying to make sure that we are the main event and I’m obsessed with it and I think about it just nonstop because I don’t want to be handed the main event because it’s a historic match. I want it to be earned. I want people to care about this match more than they care about any other match. So, Charlotte can be shoehorned in there and take your freaking selfies and call herself Miss WrestleMania. Well, we’re all hoping that you do miss WrestleMania! Ronnie, I don’t know what she be saying. It’s so freaking, it’s so absurd, it’s incoherent that it’s up to me! It’s up to me to do the work.”
•RONDA ROUSEY USING THE WORD “FAKE” TO DESCRIBE THE BUSINESS: “It’s kind of laughable isn’t it, really? Because she’s going cosplaying as a legend, a legend who would have gotten into a fight, who would have been so insulted by that word and by somebody not respecting our business to be able to go out there and say that. The fact of the matter is let’s talk brass tacks shall we because at Thanksgiving Ronda Rousey was in her kitchen crying, crying about how hard this business is because she couldn’t be at home to cook breakfast for her husband. I haven’t been home to cook breakfast for anybody for years because I’ve been on the road nonstop, nonstop. I have not missed a weekend unless I have been concussed or I have had an operation. And even with that, I was back two weeks later. So, I have had no rest, no rest in at least four years, two years before that in NXT that makes six years and I have not cried about it once, but she has been on the road, not even on a full-time schedule for at this stage, what, four months? And she’s crying in her kitchen because she can’t hack it. So, if you can’t hack it Ronda Rousey, get your jacket and get out because this is my business and you are holding that title hostage. You have had it for a year and nobody was talking about it until The Man came along and made it the most interesting title in the business. I did for the Smackdown Women’s Title and I’m going to do, or for the Raw Women’s Title.”
•ON MAIN EVENTING WRESTLEMANIA BEING HER LIFE’S PURPOSE: “It’s what I’ve worked my entire life for. I’ve been saying it as soon as I’ve been interviewed that my only goal is to main event WrestleMania. That’s my sole goal. It’s my life purpose. I feel like everything that’s happened to me and like, even the fact that I left wrestling for seven years and the fact that I’m here and I’ve got freaking chills right now, you can see them goosebumps. It’s just meant to be. I said as soon as I got signed, I wanted to make women’s wrestling the coolest thing on TV, and I feel like I’ve done that, and I want to continue to do that. I want to ensure that the future of the business so that everybody knows that there’s no limitations anymore. No matter who you are, and no matter where you came from, if you work hard, and that’s the key word. If you work hard, and if you dream and you’re passionate about it then you can achieve it. Or you can be Ronda Rousey or Charlotte Flair and just have a name and get your way in there, but there’s some people that are dreaming and grinding and they make it happen and that’s what means more. And that’s why the people get behind me because they know it means more to me.”
