[HOUR ONE]
-After Breland’s rendition of “God Bless America,” they showed an aerial view of the stadium.
-Wrestlers were shown arriving including Drew McIntyre, Logan Paul, Randy Orton, Jelly Roll, Gunther, and C.M. Punk.
-After a video package featured comedian Druski introducing the event, Michael Cole introduced the show and touted the big crowd of “over 50,000” in the stadium (it looked great) and the great weather.
-The host for the evening, Cardi B, came out to the ring and gushed about Summerslam being a big deal.
(1) ROMAN REIGNS & JEY USO vs. BRONSON REED & BRON BREAKKER (w/Paul Heyman)
Jey made his entrance through the crowd first. Then Reigns. Cole and Barrett talked about Reed and Breakker seeing taking down Roman and Jey as their key to the kingdom. The bell rang 20 minutes into the hour. After the match began, Jey and Reigns had an advantage. Jey called for his music to play. As he danced to his music, the heel duo recovered and took over (making Jey and Reigns look totally foolish for the sake of “a fun moment for the fans.”) Reed whipped Reigns into the ringside steps as Breakker went on the attack on Jey inside the ring. When Reigns stood up at ringside, Breakker charged at him and shoulder tackled him at 4:00.
At 9:00, Jey pulled himself up at ringside next to the announce table. Breakker leaped off the ring apron toward him, but Jey moved. Heyman checked on him. Jey crawled back into the ring and leaped to tag Reigns, but Reed yanked Reigns of the ring apron. Breakker then went back on the attack on Jey. A minute later, Jey managed to dive and tag in Reigns who went on the attack on Breakker to cheers. Reigns battered Breakker with clotheslines in the corner and then clotheslined him over the top rope. Reigns then ran and flip dove over the top rope and overshot both Reed and Breakker and sorta blockbustered them as he flipped mid-air and landed safely, but not without some concern he might not.
Back in the ring he knocked Reed off the ring apron with a Superman Punch. Breakker hit Reigns from behind, then lowered his straps. As Breakker set up a running spear, Reigns countered. Reed, though, was technically legal and he attacked Reigns.
Reigns tagged out to Jey. Reed landed a Death Valley Driver for a two count at 15:00. Reed then dove to ringside on both Reigns and Jey. Breakker then sprinted and clotheslined Reigns onto and over the Spanish announce table. Breakker walked on top of the table and gloated to the crowd.
Breakker landed a top rope bulldog on Jey as Reed had him lifted on his shoulders. Breakker then charged at Reigns at ringside, but Reigns met him with a Superman Punch. Reigns then speared Breakker through a barricade at ringside. Heyman, by the way, had Reigns’s sneakers hanging around his neck by their tied-together laces.
Reed then yelled “Tsunami!” When he climbed, Reigns knocked him down with a Superman Punch. Reigns and Jey came back with a 1D on Reed. Breakker broke up the cover. Breakker went for a spear on Jey, but Roman shoved Jey out of the path and then absorbed the Breakker spear instead. Jey then went on the attack on Reed and landed an Uso Splash for the clean win.
They cut to a fuming Heyman backing up the entrance aisle, yelling at Reigns. Cole the massive story developing was that Reigns put himself in harm’s way and sacrificing him for his cousin. Barrett said he had never put his body on the line for family or faction-mates in the past. Barrett said that’s why Reigns has been successful, because he was focused on his own success. Barrett asked if he was getting soft.
WINNERS: Roman & Jey in 22:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: Nice crowd-pleasing opener with a feel-good finish. It was a standard timeless tag match formula working toward a big hot tag and coming up short at first with a lot of big signature spots mixed in before the finish.) [c]
(2) RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ & ROXANNE PEREZ vs. CHARLOTTE FLAIR & ALEXA BLISS – Women’s Tag Team Title match
Charlotte made her entrance first followed closely by Bliss. Barrett said things weren’t going well for Charlotte lately, but her friendship with Bliss seems to be turning that around. Rodriguez and Perez came out next. The bell rang 56 minutes into the hour.
Raquel settled into battering Charlotte early. Bliss tagged in and took over against Perez at 9:00. She went for Twisted Bliss, but Perez raised her knees. Raquel tagged in and scored a two count on Bliss. Charlotte clapped to get the crowd encouraging Bliss to fight back. The claps faded quickly.
Charlotte rallied and landed a top rope moonsault onto both Raquel and Perez at 12:00 leading to a near fall on Raquel. All four brawled and Bliss mistakenly punched Charlotte during the melee. Cole said it was clearly inadvertent. Raquel then gave a Tajana Bomb to Charlotte. Perez entered and delivered a Pop Rocks to Charlotte. Bliss broke up the cover. Bliss took control and set up Sister Abigail on Perez. She watched as Charlotte stood by ominously looking her way. Charlotte charged, but to give a big boot to Raquel as she tried to interfere. She then hit Sister Abigail for the win. Cole called it an “odd sequence” at the end.
WINNERS: Bliss & Charlotte in 13:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: The inadvertent strike by Bliss on Charlotte was played well rather than overplayed. The tease of Charlotte looking she held a grudge but was just looking out for Raquel was a bit contrived, but overall I think it worked as part of the story they’re telling, which is we are doubting their alliance holding more than we should.)
-A skit for a pizza sponsor took place with Akira Tozawa, New Day, Grayson Waller, Nikki Bella, Dragon Lee, Joaqin Wilde, and Cruz Del Toro took place. [c]
(3) SAMI ZAYN vs. KARRION KROSS (w/Scarlett)
Kross made his entrance first with Scarlett.
The bell rang 20 minutes into the hour. Barrett said if Sami doesn’t embrace the hatred that resides in his heart, he will never be World Champion. He said Kross is trying to bring it out in him.
Kross went on the attack early, battering Sami in the corner. Sami quickly fired back and clotheslined Kross over the top rope. Kross yanked Sami to the floor and whipped him into the barricade, but Sami leaped onto it and moonsault pressed Kross to the floor.
Kross took over back in the ring. He played to the crowd and then charged, but Sami caught him with a back elbow and a leaping axe handle. Kross made a comeback with a suplex and scored a two count at 3:00. He yelled, “Just say it, you stupid bastard!” He shoved him against the bottom rope and berated him.
Sami tried a comeback, but Kross took him down with a Doomsday (Saito) suplex. Scarlett slid a steel pipe to Kross in the corner. As Scarlett distracted the ref, Kross swung. Sami ducked and then landed a Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall. Sami picked up the metal pipe. He contemplated using it, milking the moment. He then threw to ringside and yelled at Scarlett. Kross rolled up Sami from behind for a believable near fall. Sami gave Kross an Xploder suplex into the corner onto his head. He then landed the Helluva Kick for the win. Cole said Sami just proved that “sometimes nice guys can finish first.”
WINNER: Sami in 8:00.
-They went to Cole and Barrett at ringside. Cole said he knows he wouldn’t be sitting there if not for Hogan. He said he was the greatest performer of all time. He narrated photos of his matches at Summerslam events over the years. He said he “carried professional wrestling on his back for three decades.” He added, “Red in peace, brother.” They showed Nick Bollea in the crowd looking touched. “Real American” blared. [c]
(4) TIFFANY STRATTON vs. JADE CARGILL – Women’s Title match
Cole got a bit obsessed with liquor during this show when he was reading promotional spots, including lamenting here that he had to drink water at ringside during the show. Jade came out first. When Tiffany came out, Cole said she started training just four years ago. Barrett some young first-time champions seem like they’re destined to lose quickly as it feels not quite right, but not with Tiffany.
The bell rang 45 minutes into the hour. They traded brief advantages. Tiffany took a nice bump from an early boot to the chest leading to a two count. She then rolled to ringside. Jade followed and rammed her into the ring apron and then into the ringside barricade.
Jade landed Eye of the Storm sitout powerbomb for a two count at 4:00. Tiffany countered a Jade press slam attempt with a huracanrana. Tiffany took Jade down with an Alabama Slam and then went for a top rope Prettiest Moonsault, but Jade lifted her boots. Jade then gave Jaded to Tiffany, but Tiffany’s boot was in the ropes on the pin attempt.
Tiffany countered a top rope move by Jade and then landed a Prettiest Moonsault Ever for the win.
WINNER: Tiffany in 8:00 to retain the Women’s Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: They pulled that off quite well. It’s not a classic, but I think very much passable for the general audience. I like the finish as I think the future of these two is with Jade eventually as a heel, and part of her turning heel could be that she’s not quite living up to projections and thus has to resort to a bad attitude and cheating to top Tiffany in the ring.)
(5) JELLY ROLL & RANDY ORTON vs. LOGAN PAUL & DREW MCINTYRE
Logan and Drew came out first. Then Orton and Jelly Roll. Cole touted Jelly Roll losing 230 pounds. The bell rang 11 minutes into thethird hour. Logan jumped Jelly Roll before the match. Orton tried to start the match when the bell rang, but Jelly Roll insisted he start against Logan. Orton let him. Barrett said it’s “basically a handicapped match.” Cole said he tended to agree with him, but they should see what Jelly Roll has learned in the last few weeks. Barrett said it will be a massacre.
Jelly Roll managed to bodyslam Logan and then an elbowdrop for a two count at 2:00. Logan scurried back to his corner to tag out to Drew, looking like he wasn’t expecting that level of competence from Jelly Roll. Drew tagged in. Jelly Roll stayed in the ring, but Orton implored him to tag out to him. Jelly Roll walked up to Drew and had a few words, then turned his back. Drew slapped him in the back of his head. (He deserved it for turning his back, to be honest.)
Orton then yelled to Jelly Roll, “Show him what you’re about!” Jelly Roll walked up to Drew “face to chest.” Drew grabbed him by his throat. Jelly Roll slapped Drew. Jelly Roll jabbed Drew, but Drew gave him a Glawgow Kiss. Drew battered Jelly Roll and taunted Orton. He slapped Jelly Roll across the chest. He twisted his arm and stomped on it. Logan tagged in and continued to methodically batter Jelly Roll including a split-legged moonsault for a two count.
Orton hot-tagged in at 8:00 and went on a flurry of offense against Logan and Drew. He played to the crowd and then signaled for the RKO. Logan pulled Drew to safety at ringside. Orton slammed Logan onto the announce desk at ringside. Drew landed a Claymore. Jelly Roll checked on Orton. Logan hit Jelly Roll from behind with an axe handle to the back. He followed with his right KO punch. Barrett said Jelly Roll tried to “duck out of it” to cover for it not looking great.
Drew returned to the ring to break the count, then put Jelly Roll on the announce desk. Logan then leaped off the top rope with a splash on Jelly Roll on the table. Yikes. Logan got high on that, and the landing on Jelly Roll looked great. Medical personal and officials rushed to check on Jelly Roll. Cole called it a serious situation. Barrett said Jelly Roll’s wife at ringside looked terrified.
Logan and Drew gleefully took over against Orton in the ring as Jelly Roll was helped to his feet and to the back. Logan laughed as Jelly Roll shook his head. Cole said they’re telling Orton he was an idiot to team with Jelly Roll in the first place. Jelly Roll saw enough and returned to the ring to cheers. Orton tagged him. Jelly Roll clotheslined and chokeslammed Logan. Jelly Roll ducked Drew and then one-arm slammed him. Jelly Roll played to the cheering crowd. Jelly Roll powerslammed a leaping Logan with Drew breaking up the cover. Drew delivered a Claymore to Jelly Roll. Orton gave Drew a an RKO. Drew rolled out of the ring logan threw Orton shoulder-first into the ringpost and then leaped off the top rope with his frog splash for the win.
Cole touted Jelly Roll’s “in-ring debut.” Logan and Drew celebrated as Logan’s theme played.
WINNER: Logan & McIntyre in 18:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: That worked and they didn’t disrespect the art of wrestling by featuring Jelly Roll in a way where he was unrealistically effective or athletic. Logan was really good here selling everything Jelly Roll did and gloating like the awful person he is.) [c]
(6) GUNTHER vs. C.M. PUNK – World Hvt. Title match
The bell rang 47 minutes into the third hour. Punk ducked an early big chop attempt by Gunther. A “C.M. Punk!” chant rang out. Gunther eventually took control with a barrage of chops. He hung Punk upside down in the corner and chopped away at him at 5:00.
Gunther applied an abdominal stretch. Punk slipped out and went for a GTS, but Gunther resisted. Punk small packaged Gunther for a two count. Gunther popped up and kicked Punk in the head. “Precision offense from Gunther,” said Cole.
Gunther stayed on the attack with a big boot and a chop. Punk teetered Punk on the middle rope. Gunther grounded Punk and held him down and yelled at him with taunts. He applied a sharpshooter at 13:00. Punk slipped out and then applied a leglock and tried to turn it into a sharpshooter (and it started to look like that time Miz screwed up the figure-four). Gunther sold it and grabbed a rope to force a break. Punk held his right leg in pain afterward.
Gunther went back on the attack. Punk finally rallied and showed signs of life. Barrett said Gunther was getting to arrogant. Punk went for a running knee in the corner, but Gunther caught him and powerbombed him to the mat. Gunther moved in on Punk, but Punk went for a sudden triangle choke. Gunther blocked it, but then Punk landed a Russian leg sweep at 19:00.
Punk gave Gunther a running bulldog for a two count. Barrett said Punk looks exhausted from an extended beat down, but now Gunther is exhausted from all the offense he dished out. He said it was almost a rope-a-dope strategy. Punk climbed to the top rope, but Gunther met him up there and press slammed him to the mat. Gunther then quickly climbed to the top rope and leaped off with a splash for a two count.
Gunther avoided a GTS a minute later and landed a powerbomb. Gunther kneeled and yelled for Punk to stand. When Punk stood, Gunther landed a dinosaur dropkick. Cole said, “That’s the beginning of the end, folks.” (Has Cole ever been right about that? Or is it as transparent of a giveaway that the end is most definitely not near as a I think it is?) He powerbombed Punk for a two count. Barrett said he knew Punk was good, but he didn’t know he was unbreakable.
Gunther stood over Punk. Punk sat up and swung at Gunther half-heartedly, looking exhausted. Gunther chopped him. Cole wondered if Cole even knew where he was. Gunther put Punk on the top turnbuckle and slapped him. Punk collapsed to the ring apron. Gunther kicked him to ringside. Gunther lifted and tossed Punk neck-first into the middle rope.
Gunther walked over to his title belt and said it represents the best in the world. Gunther stood on the announce desk and extended his arms. Punk swept his legs and Gunther bounced face-first onto the desk and then to the ground. Gunther came up bleeding heavily from his forehead. (This match kinda needed this.) He rolled into the ring and stumbled. Barrett said he was blinded by his own blood. Cole said Punk smells blood. Barrett and Cole said they can’t remember the last time Gunther bled in a match.
Punk landed a running knee and a short-arm clothesline and then a top rope flying elbowdrop. Punk struck a pose and signaled for the Go to Sleep. Gunther surprised Punk with a sudden sleeper. Punk stood and then lifted Gunther into a GTS and landed it. Gunther staggered, but didn’t drop. Punk delivered a second GTS and that time Gunther went down for the three count.
WINNER: Punk in 29:00 to capture the World Heavyweight Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: Consider Gunther had something like 98 percent of the offense during the first 85 percent of that match, Punk really had to win or else this would seem like a burial. No shenanigans from Seth Rollins during the match, but…)
-Cole started to sign off the show as Punk teared up as the ref presented him with the title. He clutched it to his chest and hugged it. Fans chanted “C.M. Punk!” The scene kind of hovered without anything happening. Then Cole stood and emphatically said Punk has proven he is the best in the world. Then the celebration sorta dragged on until the obvious, which is Seth Rollins’s music playing. Cole said Seth, who came out on crutches, has until next June to cash in the contract. Barrett said Seth plans to haunt him until then. Seth turned and left on crutches. Heyman held up the MITB briefcase. Seth then paused and shoved the crutches down and took off his knee brace and revealed heis just fine. He then charged to the ring. “Oh – my – god,” said Cole. “Not tonight of all nights!”
Punk met Seth in the ring and set up a GTS. Seth slipped free and elbowed him and then hit Punk with the briefcase over and over and over across the head and back. He then cashed it in.
(7) C.M. PUNK vs. SETH ROLLINS – World Heavyweight Title match
Seth stomped Punk and scored a three count. “Seth Rollins outmaneuvered C.M. Punk again,” Cole said. He dubbed it the “ruse of the century.” Heyman, Breakker, Reed and Seth surrounded Punk as Cole said, “It’s about power, absolute power.”
WINNER: Rollins in about 10 seconds.
(Keller’s Analysis: So we’re to believe Seth pretending to be hurt had anything significant to do with Punk being vulnerable to losing in that way by going through a grueling 29 minute beat down and then being bashed with a briefcase and then getting stomped? What a needless “swerve” for the sake of a “swerve.”)
