-The show opened with a series of spots from Deadline. They played around with the order of matches, starting with Page-Iguana then Dame-Paxley, Women’s ISC, Femi-Saints, and the Men’s ISC leading to the return of Tony D’Angelo. The recap was quite long at about six minutes.

-New NXT Champion Oba Femi made his entrance, and Vic ran down the short list of men that have been NXT Champion twice. Femi said true power doesn’t bend or break or beg; it stands still and watches the world revolve around it. He said he was true power. Femi said let’s be real; NXT wasn’t the same without the ruler on top. He said the title belongs on his shoulder. He said he’s done with Ricky Saints, and he transitioned to his upcoming match with Cody Rhodes. He said Rhodes won’t see potential or the future; he’ll see the now. He’ll see the ruler in all his glory: Oba Femi. He said it was time to talk about the end of the show, ostensibly meaning Tony D’Angelo, but Ricky Saints saved us from Tony for just a bit longer.

Saints congratulated Femi and said his bag was lighter because Femi did what he said he was going to do. He said Femi was the better man at Deadline. He said he sees Femi with the championship and he feels like it’s over, but then he remembered who the hell he is, and said he isn’t going to bow down. He said he’s steering the universe back on course, and it’s 1-1 between them, so he’s demanding his shot at the championship.

Je’Von Evans hit the ring to his music. He said he didn’t mean to interrupt, but he’s been watching Deadline over and over, and the Young O.G. survived the Iron Survivor Challenge. He said he earned his opportunity at New Year’s Evil. But then it makes him wonder – why would he wait until January to have a match? He said he’s locked in and nobody’s going to dictate his moment. He asked for the championship match…tonight. The crowd popped.

Saints asked him what the rush is. He said if he wins the title, that’s better than whatever Evans-Femi would be. Evans said he isn’t the future, he’s the right now. He said he doesn’t mean to be cocky, but ain’t nobody touching him at the age of 21. He reiterated his challenge to Femi. Saints got excited and said okay, he’s on board. Femi said no beltless guys are going to dictate his moves. Evans said he was afraid. Femi said he’s never been afraid of him, and he’s always beaten him. He said game on. Vic begged for Ava to sign off on this match because none of us want to wait for New Year’s Evil.

-In a promoted segment, Kelani Jordan’s heel turn and the budding feud with Jordynne Grace was outlined. The first commercial of the show hit at 18 past the hour, which is ten minutes later than usual. [c]

-Hype for Cena’s upcoming match with Gunther.

-Tatum Paxley sat alone in the dark, in a “room” with pallets set up like walls with photos of Izzi Dame on them. She said she has nothing left to lose – but Izzi does. She held up dolls of the men in the Culling. She said one by one, they’ll go, and it’ll just the two of them…alone, together.

(1) JORDYNNE GRACE vs. KELANI JORDAN

The battle got going on the floor during Grace’s entrance. They got to the ring and the ref called for the bell. Thesz press by Grace. Body slam by Grace. Jordan reversed a second slam but ran the ropes and got caught with a Michinoku Driver for two. Jordan reversed another slam but got thrown down into a turnbuckle and hit in the back of the neck with double knees. Grace soared in with a back elbow. Grace Under Pressure missed. Jordan hit a dropkick to take control.

Jordan slowed down and worked the left leg with kicks and elbow drops. Jordan draped Grace on the apron but both of them ended up there in a chop battle. Grace tried to hit a German suplex to the floor, but Jordan held on. Jordan wanted a Russian leg sweep or Spanish Fly to the floor, but Grace thwarted that. After a series of reversals, Jordan drove Grace’s shin into the apron and the match went to commercial. [c]

Grace was working a stretch muffler and then hit a suplex. Jordan bailed and Grace followed her out to the ramp side. Grace was setting up something like a Gory Bomb but Jordan escaped and hit a chop block. Jordan grabbed a chair and swung, and Grace moved her leg and Jordan missed. Apparently the ref didn’t consider it a disqualification-level offense because Grace moved? The intent was the same. The match went back inside and the women were on handstands tied up with their legs, and they started slapping each other’s faces in a pretty amusing spot; I thought maybe I caught Grace grinning for a second. Vic mentioned that Cody Rhodes, via socials, said he’d be watching the main event tonight.

Grace yanked Jordan outside in a match that can’t stop heading to the floor. They reversed a number of times and Grace charged Jordan into the steps and then hit the Grace Under Pressure backsplash from the steps to the floor. “This is awesome” chant. Jordan headed back in, but Grace foolishly grabbed the chair and picked it up to use it. It was ripped away by the ref, and Jordan charged Grace into the barricade. Back inside, Kelani hit a 450 Splash (where’s the split-legged moonsault?) for the win.

WINNER: Kelani Jordan at 11:25.

(Wells’s Analysis: These two have faced off more than a few times and have great chemistry, and the only downside is that both of them have Jordan/Jordynne in their name so I sometimes type the wrong thing. Kelani just seems like she’s hitting on all cylinders right now. Her mic work could still be polished, but in the ring, she’s all there. Grace needs a win, like, yesterday)

-Blake Monroe sat in a makeup chair ahead of her open challenge. [c]

-Jordynne Grace beat herself up in the locker room among silent Evolve talent. Thea Hail tried to gas her up and Grace said “Am I really getting advice from a 6-year-old?” Hail said she was 22, but she’s been there since she was 18, so you could say she’s “grizzled.” Hail had to run because she wanted to be part of the Blake Monroe Open Challenge.

-Monroe hit the ring and said the holidays are approaching and she’s in a giving mood. She said it’s time to see which lucky lady is getting the opportunity of a lifetime. Lola Vice and a large number of Evolve talents hit the ramp, but Hail ran in from the back, snapped on a Kimura Lock, and Monroe tapped. It hadn’t been a real match, though, so it didn’t count. And…that was the scene. No match. Seriously.

-Shiloh Hill talked all sciencey to Kelly Kincaid ahead of his debut. [c]

(2) SHILOH HILL vs. LEXIS KING

In a very weird moment, Lexis King was already in the ring upon return, and Booker said “Put him on the main roster. Oh yeah, man!” He was the unannounced opponent for Shiloh Hill.

King tried to jump Hill, who dumped him. Hill dominated early but King got into it with a running back kick for two. There was a “Shiloh” chant, so people are responding to his stuff as much as I am, it seems (if that’s possible). They both went down with stereo kicks. Hill pulled out his mouthguard with the extra tooth as kind of fire-up move. There was a “Toothless Aggression” chant as Hill hit a big block. King hit a superkick and Hill got weird and asked for more. Back body drop by Hill. Diamond Cutter by Hill finished. Vic called it “Whisper to the Beast.”

WINNER: Shiloh Hill at 2:56.

(Wells’s Analysis: We’ve just gotten a taste, but I already loved him on the mic and I’m liking what little we got here. This guy is going to absolutely own crowds. I feel bad for King, who had a good heel thing going a handful of months ago but has been lost in the shuffle since)

-Ethan Page walked through the back ahead of the next segment. They’re going to rapid commercials here after the early lack of them. [c]

[HOUR TWO]

-Kelly Kincaid talked with Oba Femi. He said when you’re champion, you expect the unexpected, but when Oba Femi is involved, the outcome is predictable. He cut a promo on Cody Rhodes and said he might carry the company on his back, but who’s going to carry him when he puts him in the ground? He said “I must prepare” and left the scene.

-Mike Rome introduced Ethan Page. The hair-trigger CW censor got its weekly quota in as the crowd said “asshole” at him a few times. He said he’s successful because he figured out how to do this business because he asked the right questions. He said other wrestlers asked how to throw a great dropkick, and he was asking how to break someone’s jaw. He said now, those athletes can stay in the back and stare at him holding his two belts. He said we’ll all watch John Cena have his last match in a few days, and then he walks away for good. Page said a week after he’s gone, he’ll be a distant memory, and his spot will be filled by a man with a giant ego. He said he turned the NXT North American Championship into the most sought-after title in NXT. He said he wasn’t satisfied, and he become AAA Mixed Tag Team Champion, making him “one of one,” unlike anyone else in this company. Is he goading Carmelo Hayes here or has “one of one” become more…out there?

The lights went out and the Tony D’Angelo walking scene played on the tron again. The spotlight came up, Page realized D’Angelo was behind him, and D’Angelo laid out Page. Oh great, he’s a tweener, because he’s so interesting we need questions surrounding this guy.

-Sol Ruca and Kendal Grey (with Wren Sinclair) walked through the back separately ahead of the next match. [c]

-Ava gathered the four men who didn’t win the Iron Survivor Challenge. She said the Oba-Je’Von match is tonight, but she needs a challenger for New Year’s Evil. She said since they were all tied at the end of the match, they can have a match to decide who gets the next shot. Ethan Page showed up and ranted about what Tony D did just a bit earlier.

(3) WREN SINCLAIR (w/Kendal Grey) vs. SOL RUCA

They jockeyed for position early. They did mat reversals until Ruca controlled briefly with a headlock. Sinclair rolled up Ruca for two. Ruca hit an X-Factor for two. Up in the audience, Zaria was leaning on a post, watching. Ruca waved at her and Wren rolled her up for two. Wren strung together a series of kicks and hit a bulldog for two. Sinclair charged Ruca’s historically problematic knee into the mat, then worked a leg submission. Ruca finally escaped and hit a few back elbows. Ruca exploded out of the corner with a pretty shotgun dropkick. Wren laid in a big palm strike, and a double-handed one right after. Double-underhook suplex by Sinclair. Ruca hit a backstabber but didn’t catch one of Sinclair’s arms, so it was pretty messy. The Sol Snatcher afterward looked great, though.

WINNER: Sol Ruca at 3:29.

(Wells’s Analysis: We all know either Ruca or Zaria are turning, but increasingly, I think both are acting heelish to a fair degree)

-As Ruca disappeared, Fatal Influence hit the ramp to their music. Jacy Jayne vibed to the theme music as the show went to commercial. [c]

-Jacy had a mic. She said Kendal Grey was living the dream, going from Evolve Champion to Iron Survivor. She said this feeling, this moment, is as good as it’s going to get. She said she has all these people cheering her, and she’s not just the future, she’s the now (that statement loses its power when they use it five times a night). She said reality would smack her in the face at New Year’s Evil, and her 15 minutes of fame will be up when she loses, and the people will move on to the next new flavor of the month. Wow, this is just loaded with wrestling cliches. She said potential doesn’t win championships, but holding the NXT Championship is a whole different level. She said Grey spent a year trying to make a name of herself, but Jayne owned this year. She said she was the most dominant champion of the deepest division in history. Well…I guess she is a heel so these half-truths are okay. She said she’s the glue who holds this place together, and a bootleg Kurt Angle in a ponytail isn’t going to steal her spotlight. She said Kendal doesn’t have a chance in hell to beat her.

Grey said “Wow. That was a lot. Can I talk now?” She said she has a lot to learn, but nobody expected her to win the Iron Survivor, and she did. She said nobody expects her to beat Jacy. But now that she thinks about it, nobody expected Jacy to beat Stephanie. Jacy’s smile faded. She said if Jacy wants to treat their match as a joke, she can do that, but what happens when the underdog bites back?

Wren said the Wren QCC already has one title, and they’ll have two soon. And Fallon, maybe we’ll make it a clean sweep. Henley acted like she was going to make a point, but mid-sentence she threw a hard right. The sides brawled, and Fatal Influence took control because they had numbers. Fatal Influence stood and posed after the beatdown.

-Hank & Tank, via socials, were presented on a video with some of their work in their Pro Wrestling NOAH excursion, including a shot of them with Yoshiki Inamura. Tank has learned functional Japanese, which is pretty cool. Presently, Kelly Kincaid was talking with them. She called them the “Belly Boys,” which they did in the video also. They talked just a little bit about what they did over there, and OTM walked in on the scene and the two sides found their way to making a match for next week. [c]

-Ava asked Blake Monroe how her Open Challenge went. She said Ava set her up. She told her there wouldn’t be any more Open Challenges. Ava said okay, no more. She said she’s not going to apologize for tonight, or for her match next week with Thea Hail.

-Out in the parking lot, Zaria told Sol Ruca they hadn’t had their talk yet, but she wanted to support her. Ruca said she wanted Zaria there on Saturday for the match with Bayley. They tripped over each other in an attempt to apologize, and then just hugged. Ruca said “Let’s go get some sweet treats.” I know it’s still going to go south, but it would amuse me if this was it and they were just friends again.

-Je’Von Evans was introduced ahead of the main event. [c]

-Vic showed a clip of Stacks beating Steve Maclin for a championship at TNA Resolution.

(4) JE’VON EVANS vs. OBA FEMI (c) – NXT Championship match

They aren’t going to go super long here, so although I can see a lot of reasons for a quick title change, I’d expect a more epic length of match if it was going to happen. Mike “Guy Fieri” Rome handled formal introductions.

Femi charged Evans to a corner, because he can. They reset. Femi charged him to the same corner and waited out the count. Evans laid in a superkick and then went for the springboard cutter, but missed. He nailed a flash knee to the jaw and got a long two that had a lot of the crowd fooled. Vic mentioned that Evans is 0-9-1 in championship matches, which feels like the kind of thing you only bring up for one reason, but again…there’s not much time left. Bicycle kick by Evans got two. Evans charged, but Femi drove him to a corner and threw uppercuts and rights. Femi held up Evans, pretended to smoke a joint – seriously – and hit a delayed side slam. Oba slowed it down and worked a chinlock. Evans fought to his feet and threw elbows back, and then took Femi to a corner to break. He dropkicked Femi, who bailed to the floor. Evans went to the apron, jumped a slap attempt, and then tried a springboard move but Femi yanked his head down to the apron. They jockeyed for position and each hit big spots on the apron and the floor. The match went to split-screen with just eight minutes left to the hour. [c]

Femi was in control. Vic said that whoever won the match would go on to face Cody Rhodes, which was a massive giveaway, because they’re not going to pull Femi’s main roster debut. Dammit, Vic. Femi set up a powerbomb, but Evans hit a rana that sent them outside. Evans hit another one outside. With so little time left, I feel like we’re headed for a draw (and a six-man ladder match?) at New Year’s Evil. Femi got launched into Booker T and both announcers lost their headsets. Wow, this IS a face vs. face match. Back inside, Evans hit a frog splash for a long two. After a small amount of offense, both guys went out on the ramp side. Evans hit a big kick there, and went back in. He flew in and ate a forearm. Evans hit a German suplex but Femi no-sold, but walked into a cutter for a long two. Evans ran himself into a big uppercut for two. Femi bealed Evans, then set up a Fall From Grace, but Evans hit a cutter, then one from the top, and had the match won, but at two, the referee was yanked out of the ring. It was Ricky Saints, fresh into a new heel persona, apparently. Evans laid him out, but was left open toa Fall From Grace.

WINNER: Oba Femi at 13:44.

Femi stepped out of the ring and vaguely shook his head at Saints as he walked past him. Saints might be real close to a callup, given this sudden turn.

(Wells’s Analysis: In record time, we’ve got the match for the Iron Survivor Challenge out of the way, and it was an unsuccessful challenge as Evans is, once again, a bridesmaid. These two always have great big-small matches and this was no exception. Ricky Saints got involved in a way that made it feel like he, Evans and Femi were on a crash course for a triple threat at New Year’s Evil, but Ava already talked with the guys from the Iron Survivor Challenge about being the next challenger, so we’ve suddenly found ourselves in a pretty interesting time for the men’s division with a lot of legitimate suitors for the title)

FINAL THOUGHTS: I kind of loathed last week’s show with its breakneck pacing and endless series of messy tags, but tonight was a joy, with four singles matches that either delivered from a quality standpoint, furthered storylines or both, and we’ve already planted seeds for the next big show. There are too many special episodes of NXT, but given that this is the reality, I like that we have something to dig our teeth into immediately. Jayne-Grey has show-stealer potential written all over it, which is something I wouldn’t have said a handful of months ago, but the strides made by both are impressive. I’m going to gush a decent amount about this show on PWT Talks NXT, and I’ll try to work in some thoughts about Deadline, as I couldn’t be on the post-show for that event. Nate Lindberg and I will be with you shortly.
