[HOUR ONE]
-Michael Cole introduced the show and then they threw to a video package recapping the Clash in Italy.
-They went to the parking garage where Roman Reigns and The Usos got out of a black SUV. Reigns was handed his title belt. Jey was psyched up and clapping.
Reigns and the Usos were formally introduced for the “Acknowledge Day” ceremony. Fans loudly chanted “OTC! OTC!” Cole said Reigns was looking to shine a light on The Bloodline’s legacy now. As Reigns was about to talk, but soaked up the adulation and smiled. He asked fans to acknowledge him. They did. Reigns said there is no day like “Acknowledge Day.”
Jey said it was Jacob Fatu’s first day and he was late. He called him out. Fatu came out to his ring entrance. Reigns said, “You know what time it is?” Jey obnoxiously told Fatu to pick up the pace.” Fatu stared down Jey and then took the mic.
Fatu said he knew the consequences of winning the match or losing the match. He said he lost, and in front of his children, he is a man of his word. “Last night, I lost to my Tribal Chief,” Fatu said. “But I didn’t lose to your punk ass, Jey.” Jey smiled.
Fatu then said he’d keep it 100. He dropped to one knee and said, “I acknowledge you.” Reigns helped Fatu to his feet. He told Fatu that he won’t understand it now, “but I love you.”
Jimmy said, “We the ones!” Reigns and the Usos held up their index fingers. Fatu then raised his while standing behind Jimmy. They left the ring together.
(Keller’s Analysis: This was straight forward in that it fulfilled what was advertised, it further cemented Fatu as a stand-up guy, it underlined that Jey is obnoxious now and going to be a problem, it showed Jimmy is the mature member of Bloodline who is going to take on the role of managing egos, and that Reigns is pretty wrapped up in himself and his legacy while not being overtly heelish. It seemed even that they pulled back a bit on hinting that he might end up just being overbearing and eventually cause Fatu to snap and fans will cheer that moment.)
-They went to Cole and Graves at ringside. Cole noted that Reigns was once again isolating himself with his family. He said having Fatu in the family now means he can unleash him at anyone, anytime. They shifted to plugging the AAA event this past weekend featuring Original El Grande Americano vs. El Grande Americano in a mask vs. mask match. They said the match would re-air on Netflix right after Raw.
-They showed Seth Rollins backstage, then Paul Heyman, Austin Theory, and Bron Breakker, and then Sol Ruca backstage.
-Penta made his ring entrance. [c]
(1) PENTA vs. CARMELO HAYES vs. SOLO SIKOA (w/Talla Tonga, Tama Tonga) vs. OBA FEMI – King of the Ring tournament match
Cole discussed Solo Sikoa and his crew showing up at ringside after Roman beat Fatu. He said he wasn’t sure what to make of it, but perhaps Solo’s plan was to win the King of the Ring tournament and go on to face Roman. Oba came pout to a huge ovation. When the bell rang 35 minutes into the hour, all three opponents attacked Oba. Oba was unfazed and knocked all of them down. He even no-sold a Solo Sikoa shot and knocked him to the floor. Penta and Carmelo battled in the ring as Oba pursued Solo down the aisle. Oba made his way back to the ring and had a staredown with Talla. He then entered the ring and chokeslammed both Carmelo and Penta at the same time. He shook the top rope and fans cheered. “Oba Femi has this place rocking!” said Cole. [c]
Back from the break, Oba had everyone down. He lifted Hayes and Penta again for a chokeslam, but Solo gave him a superkick. Hayes gave him a First 48. Oba charged at Penta and Hayes in the corner, but they moved and Oba ended up crashing shoulder-first into the ringpost. Talla and Solo threw Oba into the ringpost. Cole noted there was no DQ. Talla kicked Oba over the ringside barricade. Penta landed a running flip dive over the top rope onto Solo. Hayes then did a flip dive, but overshot Penta. He threw Penta back into the ring and then climbed to the top rope. Penta moved as he dove. Solo clotheslined Hayes. Penta kicked Solo. Solo hit Penta with a lariat. Hayes ducked a Samoan Spike from Solo and took him down. Penta gave Hayes a Penta Driver. Solo broke up the cover. All three were down and slow to get up in the ring while Oba was still down at ringside.
Oba stood and eyed Talla as fans chanted “Oba!” Oba took Talla down with a clothesline. He smacked Hayes off the ring apron with a chop to teh chest. He gave Penta a spinebuster. Oba sped to ringside and slammed Talla onto the announce table. Oba then went back after Solo in the ring. “This is nuts!” said Graves. Oba gave Solo a Fall from Grace for the win. “Wow, just wow,” said Cole. Graves called him a one-man army on a mission. Cole said it was a star-making moment.
WINNER: Oba in0 9:00 to advance in King of the Ring.
-Oba spoke on the mic and said Brock Lesnar asked him if he could take an ass whipping. He said after receiving a beatdown and taking seven F5’s, he’s standing and winning. “I took your best shot and I’m still here,” he said. He said he’ll be King of the Ring. “Don’t you forget, it was 1-1 and I’ll see you down the line.”
(Keller’s Analysis: That was a strong rebound for Oba after taking a loss to Lesnar, although the loss was hardly a burial or a defining down. As he noted, he took seven F5s and it’s not like there’s ever any shame in losing to Lesnar. Oba really feels like he’s on the verge of being the Wemby of WWE who might be on the verge of defining an era.)
-A video package aired hyping the Bron Breakker vs. Seth Rollins match later in the showj.
-They showed Sol Ruca backstage. [c]
-Sol made her ring entrance. Cathy Kelley introduced her. Ruva soaked up looking at her newly won Intercontinental Title belt. Kelley congratulated Ruca and asked if she imagined that less than a month after joining Raw, she’d stand there as champion. Ruca said it’s a dream come true. She said she believed she could be a champion, but most of all the fans believed in her too. She thanked the fans. Ruba said Becky was against the match and thought she wasn’t ready, but she came out there and gave her a chance to test herself. “I proved her wrong,” Ruca said. She said it’s not just her saying, everyone is saying it. Fans cheered a bit her imitation of Becky. She said the IC Title deserves a fighting champion and that’s exactly what she’s going to be. She said if you underestimate her like Becky did, we all know how that will end. “You’re soul will be mine,” she said. She skipped around the ring as her music played and Cole said that now the hard part begins.
-They went to Cole and Graves at ringside. They threw to footage of Cody Rhodes backstage after Clash in Italy where he crossed paths with Reigns. Reigns stepped out of the locker room and eyed Cody, then looked at his belt. Cody kept walking.
-They went to Reigns and the Usos live backstage. Reigns told Jey that he’s the only one who understand tough love. He told him to stay on Jacob’s ass. He told Jey that he’s had the World Title before, but he’s “never tasted the other one.” He told him to go win KOTR. He said there are two ends of the table. Jey left. Roman told Jimmy to stay with him because Jey “has to do this on his own.”
-Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee made their entrance. [c]
-Graves hyped WWE’s tour of Mexico in September including Smackdown on Sept. 11 and Raw on Sept. 14 in Mexico City.
(2) REY MYSTERIO & DRAGON LEE vs. ETHAN PAGE & RUSEV
Rusev and Ethan made their way to the ring after the break. They comnmented on a clip from last Monday or Rey scoring a leverage three count against Rusev, followed by Rusev beating up Rey afterward, then Dragon Lee making the save. Cole said they know that Rey and Lee will coexist as a team, but wondered if Ethan and Rusev would. He called it “a strange alliance,” and questioned whether it’s even an alliance, since Ethan has been trying to undermine Rusev at every turn. The bell rang 7 minutes into the hour. Rusev and Ethan took turns beating up Lee until Lee made a comeback. Ethan blind-tagged in Rusev, but Lee rolled him up for a two count. Lee was about to tag Rey as fans cheered, but Ethan yanked Rey off the ring apron. Graves called it brilliant. Rusev then one-arm slammed Lee as they cut to a break at 3:00. [c]
Back from the break, Rusev and Ethan still had Lee isolated. Lee ducked Rusev, who tumbled over the top rope to the floor. Lee crawled for the tag. Ethan yanked on his boots and pulled him back to his corner. Rusev tagged in and waved his finger at the booing fans. They continued to build toward the hot-tag. Rey finally hot-tagged in at 8:00 and the fans popped. He landed a Drop the Dime off the top rope on Ethan and then springboard bodypress for a two count. He took a shot at Rusev as Rusev reached for him. Ethan then took the opening to take Rey down.
Rusev tripped Rey running the ropes. Lee kicked Rusev. Ethan shoved Rey into Lee and then scored a near fall on Rey. Ethan put Rey in a Boston Crab. Lee kicked Ethan to break the hold. Lee knocked Rusev out of the ring and then dove through the ropes and tackled Rusev. Rey kicked Ethan into position for a 619 and landed it. Rey then did his Drop the Dime for the win.
WINNERS: Rey & Lee in 12:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: Good, traditional tag match formula played out with a responsive crowd. I wonder if the crowd heat in Mexico for the El Grande story is inspiring WWE to aim for more of that States-side?)
-Backstage, Raw G.M. Adam Pearce told Penta that he’s going to make the match with Rey happen. Penta thanked him. LA Knight walked up to Pearce and asked what is on his mind. He complained that Pearce made “house calls” to Roman’s locker room, but he never does that with him. He told Pearce they should make him an honorary Uce. Pearce said it’s not Knight’s business, but he’s visiting Reigns because he’s the champion. Knight didn’t like it and said he can”pull him out of retirement just to put you back in.” He said he thinks he wants Reigns to be World Champion. He told Pearce to make him believe. Pearce said Jacob Fatu is a liability and Knight can believe whatever he wants. He said he’s not playing favorites. Knight raised Pearce’s arm like a Bloodline salute and then left, disgusted with Pearce.
-They showed Breakker warming up backstage. [c]
-They went to Cole and Grave who again hyped the replay of the mask vs. mask match. Graves said many are calling it one of the best matches in decades. They showed highlights of the match and also Chad Gable’s post-match speech about going on a quest to learn Lucha Libre’s culture. He said he couldn’t overcome the Lucha spirit, but he’ll always be the original El Grande Americano, but said El Grande will be the only one from now on. Gable unmasked and pointed as his wife and kids who joined him in the ring. He said he’ll be back in AAA some day, but handed the El Grande mask to El Grande.
-Cole and Graves hyped TripleMania 34. Graves said the highlights did not do the mask vs. mask justice.
(Keller’s Analysis: I can’t recall more of a sense of genuine pride and enthusiasm from WWE for a match than how they’re treating this.)
-Iyo Sky made her entrance. [c] m
(3) IYO SKY vs. GIULIA vs. ROXANNE PEREZ vs. LASH LEGEND – Queen of the Ring tournament match
The bell rang 38 minutes into the hour. Giulia applied a standing guillotine early. Lash pushed her into the corner. Guilia dropkicked all three opponents and then back suplexed Sky and played to the crowd as they cut to a break at 2:00. [c]
Perez proposed to Giulia that they work together. Perez seemed to agree, but then attacked Giulia from behind and rammed her head into the announce desk. Perez then scored a near fall in the ring on Sky. Sky and Perez battled back and forth for a while. Cole touted the quality of the match. Giulia returned and set up a double underhook suplex on the top rope. Perez broke it up and set up a spot for Lash to slam Giulia and Perez to the match. Lash then gave Perez a Lash Extension. Perez rolled out of the ring. She gave Giulia a Lash Extension next. Sky broke up the cover with a top rope double stomp. Sky then gave Giulia an Over the Moonsault for the win.
WINNER: Sky in 11:00 to advance in the Queen of the Ring.
-They discussed a graphic on the screen showing the rest of the tournament four-way first round matches.
-Maxxine Dupri told Pearce she was shocked when she saw the Queen of the Ring Tournament brackets and she wasn’t included. He said the tournament was stacked and he had to make tough decisions. She told him he overlooked her again. He said if an opening comes up, she’s at the top of his list. She thanked him, but still seemed irked. She turned to Otis, who told her they have her back. He said Austin Theory is bad news, and he and Akira Tozawa have noticed she’s been hanging out more with him. She told them she knows what she’s doing and to trust her.
-They showed Breakker warming up. [c]
-Kelley interviewed Bayley and Lyra Valkyria backstage about the Queen tournament. She asked what would happen if they cross paths. Bayley said she’s never been in the Queen tournament. Lyra saw Ruca and turned to congratulate her. She said she’d like to wrestle her for the title. Ruca said she’d be honored. Bayley told Lyra, “We were in the middle of something.” Lyra excitedly grabbed Bayley and asked if she heard that she’s getting a shot at getting back the IC Title. Bayley didn’t seem excited for her.
-Graves and Cole hyped the mask vs. mask match again, then they plugged European tour dates coming up this week.
-Perez was lamenting her loss backstage in the Clubhouse when Liv Morgan walked in and didn’t read the room. She was excited about her chance in the tournament later. Perez said she could have used them earlier. Morgan tried to recover from being wrapped up in herself and said one of them will. She said she was proud of Perez.
-Seth Rollins’s ring entrance took place. [c]
(4) SETH ROLLINS vs. BRON BREAKKER (w/Paul Heyman)
Seth was in the ring soaking up fans singing his song after the break. The bell rang 7 minutes into the hour. Graves said Breaker is still a little green in certain aspects of the game, but he has the speed and power to overcompensate for that. Breakker took early control with a released German suplex. Seth ducked Breakker as he charged and then clotheslined him over the top rope. Seth got in his obligatory dive through the ropes. He did it twice, knocking Breakker down the second time. Breakker came back and tossed Seth over the barericade into some plants in the front row who took odd bumps to the ground in response. They cut to a break as Breakker played into barking fans. [c]
Breakker took over during the break. He ran around ringside and took Seth down with a flying elbow. Breakker cleared the Italian announce table and then the English announce table. Fans chanted “CM Punk!” (Random.) Seth delivered an inverted DDT in the ring to take over at 8:00. Fans sang Seth’s song. Seth took Breakker down with a clothesline for a two count. When Seth climbed to the top rope, Breakker knocked him off balance.
Breakker then gave Seth a top rope Frankensteiner/Breakkensteiner for a near fall. Breakker leaped off the ring apron as Seth leaped off the announce desk and they collided mid-air with clotheslines and then crashed to the mat. They cut to another break at 11:00. [c]
Seth landed a superplex and then a Falcon Arrow for a near fall at 16:00. Breakker surprised Seth with a spear. At ringside, Breakker went for a spear off of one announce table onto the other, but Seth caught him and delivered a Pedigree. He then threw Breakker back into the ring and delivered another Pedigree for a near fall. Heyman celebrated the kickout.
Austin Theory came out. Seth yanked him into the ring and then knocked him out of the ring. Breakker charged, but Seth side-stepped him. Seth then stomped away at Breakker. Theory hit Seth in the head with the belt as Heyman was distracting the ref. Montez Ford ran out and flip dove over the top turnbuckle onto Theory at ringside. Breakker then speared Ford. Breakker then speared Seth for a near fall. Fans popped for the kickout.
Seth kicked Breakker as Breakker charged at him. Seth then landed a Stomp. Seth tried to roll out of the ring, but Heyman put Breakker’s boot under the bottom rope. Heyman then pointed it out to the ref. Cole decried Heyman’s cheating. Seth eyed Heyman as Heyman gloated. Seth got wide-eyed and dropped to ringside and confronted Heyman, who kept running his mouth. Heyman told Seth he had no respect for him. Breakker then charged at Seth, but Seth moved and Breakker speared Heyman through the barricade instead. Breakker looked at the heap of humanity down in front of him in the form of Heyman. Fans chanted, “Holy shit!” Breakker re-entered the ring and speared Seth, but he hit the belt Seth was holding up. Seth then stomped Breakker and got the pin. “What a win, what a match, what a show!” said Cole.
WINNER: Seth in 22:00.
-As Seth’s music played, Seth acknowledged Montez. Cole said they’re apparently put their differences aside. The show ended with fans singing Seth’s song.
(Keller’s Analysis: A heck of a match, and it had all the signature favorite moves and spots that both wrestlers are known for. Heyman doesn’t take many bumps, so I’m curious if they follow up on this strong with Heyman really pushing for revenge on Seth for orchestrating it. Montez keeps getting a spotlight different than anything he’s had before. It’s nice to see it continue.)
