-WWE Remembers Dory Funk Jr. – 1941-2026
-Vic said we have a huge main event in the Underground, but let’s see what the NXT Universe thought about the Grayson Waller Effect. A brief recap of Waller last week, as well as Cruz Montana’s intentions for the NXT Championship, aired as well as Tony D’Angelo’s rebuttal. The recap ended with Waller’s soundbyte “consider your cages rattled.”
-The players for tonight’s main event were shown arriving earlier.
(1) JAIDA PARKER & THEA HAIL vs. NIKKITA LYONS & KARMEN PETROVIC (w/Nattie)
The KFC Popcorn Chicken sponsorship, already pretty obtrusive in scenes, is now splashed in all four corners of the ring. Parker and Petrovic started the match and went to wristlocks and grapples. Petrovic grounded Parker, but after a rope run, Parker hit a block and made the blind tag to Hail. Parker slammed Hail onto Petrovic for two. Back kick by Petrovic, who tagged Lyons. Lyons booted Hail and covered for two. Lyons worked a brief wristlock on the mat, and Hail tried to power up and reversed. The ref got hung up with Parker and soon everyone was involved. The babyfaces did a little dance together and laid out the heels outside. Parker got shoved into the stairs, and Nattie took out Hail. Lyons hit a Pearl River Plunge on Hail for a long two and the match went to split-screen. [c]
Hail hit a crucifix for two on Lyons, then an inside cradle for another. Lyons cut off a tag until Hail nailed a kick. Lyons yanked her away from a kick and hit a lariat to boos. Wow, an actual heat sequence shown on TV? Hail made the hot tag and Parker dominated both heels. Rana for Lyons. Hard short clothesline on Petrovic, the legal woman. Gourd buster by Parker. Parker set up Petrovic in the corner and went for the teardrop, but Lyons and Nattie broke it up. Sling blade by Petrociv. Lyons tagged in and the heels hit the Hart Attack for two. All four women were in the ring as Nattie gloated to the announcers about the move.
The match cleared up to Parker and Lyons. Parker hit Hipnotic on Nattie on the apron, then got rolled up for two. Parker set up Lyons and hit the teardrop. High-steps and a tag to Hail, who hit a flying senton on Lyons to finish.
WINNERS: Hail & Parker at 9:18.
Nattie tried to make it a beatdown, but the faces won the day.
(Wells’s Analysis: Strong tag opener that actually had some classic tag elements rather than NXT’s usual cluster. Lyons has finally gotten to the point where I have nothing to complain about, which took a long time, ut they proved they can make it work if both parties are committed.)
-Myles Borne & Tavion Heights gassed each other up ahead of their tag team championship match later tonight.
-Tony D’Angelo made his way to the ring ahead of the next segment. [c]
-There was a segment of decent length promoting alumnus Oba Femi’s defeat of Brock Lesnar, and Lesnar’s retirement, after Hell in a Cell.
-Tony D’Angelo entered to his theme and said he wasn’t going to let Grayson Waller talk trash without consequences. He also said mistake or not, Cruz Montana laid him out, so he wants him out here.
Waller showed up on the perch and said he was bored already. He said he was the money fight, so D’Angelo and the title go through him. D’Angelo said he was talking trash from afar, just like usual. He said they could talk man to man, but he’s hiding like usual because he’s a bitch. He said his panties were in a wad over his own career. He said they were partners back in the 2.0 days. He talked about all the guys from WarGames who became champion, and Waller was the only one who didn’t. He told Waller to be honest with himself, and he was back to become relevant again, but unfortunately for him, he’s the champion.
Waller said more people are talking about the NXT male roster than ever thanks to him. He went on about the softness of the roster until…
Cruz Montana’s music played him through the crowd. He revved up the crowd and said nobody called Waller out here. He said last week he rattled some cages, and he gave props for it. He said he didn’t grab a mic and bitch to the world – he worked his ass off to show he’s the man that he says he is. He said Waller has a chip on his shoulder because his life isn’t as nice as he wants it, but Montana has a chip on his shoulder because there’s no other option. He said he hopes and prays that Waller never meets the man in the mirror that Montana wrestled with. He said he spents months and years he should be there.
Waller asked how many times Montana will tell the same sad story. He said Montana laid out his story and Waller’s going to piss all over it.
Montana said he’s a funny dude but he only fights for himself. He said when you have people that depend on you, people that hold you accountable, that’s what makes you unstoppable.
D’Angelo said he doesn’t care what their motivations are – they can make a match and the winner will see him at Heatwave. He tossed his mic and the segment ended.
-A video segment laid out the saga of the NXT Women’s Championship.
-Wren Sinclair paced in the locker room, worrying to Kendal Grey that she thought they were in over their heads tonight. Grey said she’s got this.
-Zaria entered ahead of the Speed Championship match. [c]
(2) WREN SINCLAIR (c) vs. ZARIA – Women’s Speed Championship match
Wren’s entrance wasn’t shown, despite this being for her championship. Zaria hit a big boot and missed an elbow drop early. Arm drag by Sinclair. Zaria fougt off a second and battered Wren in a corner. Wren dropped Zaria on a rope and hit a bulldog for a one count. Wren again dropped Zaria on a rope and hit anoter arm drag, then a headscissor takedown. Back elbow by Sinclair. Zaria yanked her off the top rope and dumped her into a corner, then booted her from the apron. Zaria pounded down on Sinclair and hit an elbow drop. She stalked Sinclair and Vic wondered why she wasn’t working quickler. Zaria hit a couple elbows, then a running pump kick. There was a dueling chant that was about even, with the vocal males mostly favoring Zaria. After a collision, both sold on the mat. The two minute warning passed.
The women fought to their feet and exchanged rights. Sinclair got the better of an exchanged and rolled up Zaria for two. Zaria hit a clothesline and a back elbow, and then an x-factor for two. One minute left. Sinclair missed in a corner and Zaria picked her up, but Sinclair reversed into a rollup for two. Dropkick and a double-underhook butterfly suplex by Sinclair for two. Sinclair went hih. High cross-body, roll-through by Zaria. Zaria charged and both spilled to the floor. There was a reversal of moves back inside, but time expired.
TIME LIMIT DRAW at 5:00.
Zaria was ticked off afterward and hit an F-5 after the match.
(Wells’s Analysis: An inevitable result as Zaria shouldn’t be losing and there’s no reason for her to take another championship that Sinclair needs. A pretty nice big-small match here)
-OTM talked and felt they were on the same page, but Birthright showed up and threw dust in the clean house. They talked about OTM wanting singles matches for the Speed Championship, and there was a moment between OTM.
-Vanity Project entered ahead of their defense. [c]
-Grayson Waller and Kelani Jordan ran into each other in the pantry. Jordan said Waller she appreciated what he said about everyone being unready. She said she’s going to do something he couldn’t – win the top championship on her first attempt. Waller told her “don’t miss” for those in the know about Lani and Carmelo Hayes. After Jordan left, Mason Rook showed up and got into Waller’s face about his comments on the men’s roster. It devolved quickly into a brawl.
(3) MYLES BORNE & TAVION HEIGHTS vs. THE VANITY PROJECT (Brad Baylor & Ricky Smokes) (c) (w/Jackson Drake & Myka Lockwood) – NXT Tag Team Championship match
Heights grounded Smokes early, then put him down with a big block. Body slam, then another by Heights. Heights caught a flying Smokes for a powerslam for two. Tag to Borne, who hit an Angle Slam for two. Smokes got in a couple of blocks and made a blind tag, but Borne put Baylor down with a dropkick immediately. Borne battered Baylor around the ring and charged him hard to a neutral corner. Heights tagged in and he reversed Borne into a lariat to Baylor. VP double-teamed to take down Heights, and Smokes covered for two. VP was in control as the match went to split-screen. [c]
[HOUR TWO]
VP continued a heat sequence on Borne, making frequent tags. Smokes leaned on him and the heels posed to boos. They made more tags and stomped mudholes in the heel corner. Baylor hit a Mr. Perfect float-over neckbreaker for two. Borne got in some strikes and the match slowed down as they hit their knees, then feet, throwing rights. Smokes tagged in and Borne flipped through a double-suplex attempt and made the hot leaping tag. Heights tossed VP around effortlessly and slammed Smokes for two. Borne tagged in and Vic, in a rarity, called out how Borne might not be ready (which of course may factor into the finish). Smokes hit Meteora on Borne and tagged Baylor. Heights was bumped to the outside but he broke up a pin after a double-team move by VP.
Borne crawled to another tag, so never mind that narrative for now. VP snuck out of suplexes by both faces but ran right into scoop-slams by both. Lockwood and Drake both tried to interfere and got tossed. Borne knocked the heels together and hit Borne Again on Smokes, then took Baylor to the outside. Heights hit his finisher on Smokes to score the pin and his first championship ever in the company; this also made Borne a double champion.
WINNERS: Tavion Heights & Myles Borne at 10:47.
(Wells’s Analysis: Satisfying finish as they set up a nice red herring with Heights tagging in Borne too early, leading to a narrative that seemed to open the door for the loss, but it wasn’t to be as the faces stayed on the same page to take the win)
-The entire Vanity Project walked out through the back and Drake complained loudly to no one in particular. Keanu Carver passed the other way, and Lockwood got thirsty over him just like with last week’s little moment. Drake asked what she was doing. Carver continued on, assumingly to the ring. [c]
-Izzi Dame & Niko Vance caught Lizzy Rain between them. Izzi said Lizzy got lucky that Shawn Sears showed up. Spears showed up and said he made a mixed tag match for the four of them next week. Vance said Spears always said to quit while he’s ahead, but he never takes his own advice. Dame & Vance left. Rain said she doesn’t trust Spears and if things go sideways, it’ll be three on one real quick. She left, and Spears said “Smart girl.”
(4) EK PROSPER vs. KEANU CARVER
Carver powered Prosper to a corner, then gave a surprising clean break and slapped Prosper on the shoulder like he was encouraging him. Prosper worked a brief hammerlock and Carver tossed him with one arm to a corner. Carver mnissed in a corner, and Prosper hit a hich kick from the apron. Prosper leapt to a lightning-quick moonsault for two. Rope run and a dropkick by Prosper. Another rope run led to a dropkick by Carver. Prosper dumped Carver and then dropkicked him to the floor. Carver caught a flying Prosper, who hit a rana to put Carver into the announce table. Carver put on the brakes and apologized to the announcers as he continued his strange ways in the match. Prosper hit another move on the outside and had control as the match went to commercial, this time with no split-screen. [c]
Prosper controlled with quick kicks. Carver caught one and hit a short-arm clothesline. He hit a rear naked choke and Prosper dropped into a jawbreaker to free himself. Carver hit a big uppercut and a suplex got turned into a jawbreaker of his own. Prosper hit a couple of rights and a superkick, then a thrust kick. Springboard moonsault by Prosper. Top rope blockbuster into a cover by Prosper for two. Booker called it a swanton buster and Vic said Book was in a naming mood tonight. Carver hit a German suplex for two. Nice of him to get an offensivemove in. Big powerbomb by Carver for a long two.
Rollup by Prosper for two. After a couple of reversals, Prosper hit a step-up dropkick. Shining wizard by Prosper. Prosper went up and missed a moonsault, but Carver caught him and won with a…small package?! (Vic’s response was the same as mine)
WINNER: Keanu Carver at 10:39.
(Wells’s Analysis: Weird story, acknowledged as such, as Carver lost a match working his own way and instead he grappled his way to a victory. That’s nice enough, but he did get totally dominated by Prosper throughout, which was a strange scene. Interesting new wrinkle for Carver)
-Osiris Griffin and Cutler James talked about Dion Lennox’s bad mood, not realizing he was sitting behind them. Lennox got fired up and said he wants the group to be untouchable. He said they used to be feared, but he’s not good with being soft and complacent like Grayson Waller keeps talking about. He said next week, Saquon Shugars won’t walk away from them, because when DarkState is around, ain’t nobody safe.
-There was a sponsored segment promoting the main event.
-In a selfie video, Shiloh Hill said he fractured part of his skull in the match with Tristan Angels. He said it might be a bit before we see him in the ring. He segued into Kam Hendrix getting healthy way too fast after his injury. He also talked about going down rabbit holes, putting over Kali Armstrong’s tournament, then talking about the open secret of Pat Patterson winning a tournament in Brazil that never existed to win the first Intercontinental Championship. He then went into the history of green mist in Japanese wrestling.
-Vic and Booker T acknowledged Dory Funk Jr. after his death today, and as usual, they were quick with a nice video covering his career and his giving back to the business by training a ton of wrestlers at the Funk Dojo. We got a few words from his Hall of Fame speech as well, talking about how he’d do it all over again for the love of pro wrestling. It was very brief given the time they had to prepare, but as always, it was a great touch.
-Tristan Angels ran into Cruz Montana and said he didn’t appreciate a “new” talent getting all the attention. Montana asked how long Angels has been here, given his appearances last year. He said “Three months. And I’M the new guy.” He shook his head and took off.
-Vic promoted next week’s mixed tag and Shugars-Lennox tilts.
-PC & Evolve talents flooded to the “ring” for the Underground match. The TakeOver thumping music played as the two combatants walked through the back. [c]
(5) KENDAL GREY (c) (w/Wren Sinclair) vs. LOLA VICE – Underground match for the NXT Women’s Championship
The lights went lower. Mike Rome made formal intros. After some dancing around, Grey shot in but Vice caught her. Vice landed a kick but Grey caught the next on. They rolled all the way to the edge of the rope-less ring and broke and went back inside. Vice missed two shots and Grey hit a rana to the outside, where they fought near the announce table. Grey, caught in a chancery, charged Vice to the steps. Grey charged from inside and Vice yanked her down face-first into the steps. It looked like a genuinely painful landing. Grey was bleeding HARD from the ear. The ref checked on her and the match went to split-screen. They showed the hard landing three times. It didn’t look fun. [c]
