Former champion reportedly returning to WWE

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)...

The following is the latest in a new series of weekly in-depth articles exclusive to PWTorch which will help put in perspective major wrestling promotions with a weekly overview, looking at news and roster developments, results, future line-ups, social media activity, key interviews, plus a timely commentary at the end. We will be featuring similar features on other promotions each week and each will be updated weekly.

•Top Stories of the Week

  • Brock Lesnar won the Universal Championship at Crown Jewel and the Authors of Pain won the Raw Tag Team Championships on Raw
  • WWE announced that Triple H sustained a torn pectoral muscle during the DX vs. Brothers of Destruction match at Crown Jewel. The injury appeared to happen fairly early in the match, but he continued with the match and heavily favored the injured arm. Triple H is expected to cut his international tour short and come back to the United States for surgery to repair the torn muscle.
  • WWE TV this week avoided Crown Jewel as little as possible, only showing brief video packages to recap the storylines being advanced at that show including the Universal Championship and DX vs. The Brothers of Destruction. Shane McMahon talked about the World Cup tournament on Tuesday as well. All focus has shifted to Survivor Series because there is only one more week of television before that event which takes place on 11/18/18.

•Latest TV Highlights

Monday Night Raw

  • The Authors of Pain win the Raw Tag Team Championships after Baron Corbin forces Seth Rollins to defend them by himself. Rollins got in quite a bit of offense, but eventually lost. After losing Dean Ambrose comes to the ring through the crowd and asks Seth if he wants to know why he turned on him. Instead of answering he hit Seth with Dirty Deeds and left. The announcers asked Renee if she knew what was going on (addressing the fact they’re married) and she said “There’s no reasoning with him right now”
  • Survivor Series teams are starting to take shape. Baron Corbin announces Bliss is the captain for the women’s Survivor Series Team, but she will not be wrestling. No women participants have been announced. Corbin announced Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, and Braun Strowman are three members of the men’s team. Kurt Angle was scheduled to fight Corbin for the right to be the captain of the men’s team, but this match was changed by Corbin to be Angle vs. McIntyre. Drew McIntyre won in dominating fashion (I assume this makes Baron Corbin the captain?) and the announcers really played up how humiliating the loss was for Angle.
  • Ronda responded to Becky Lynch’s promo last week. Ronda acknowledged the fan support for Becky (a Becky chant broke out) but noted that she shouldn’t mistake her respect for weakness. Ronda also mocked Becky’s time in Clown College and her former job as a flight attendant saying that while Becky was doing those things, she was dominating the sport of MMA. Ronda ended her promo by saying Becky may be “The Man,” but “I am the baddest bitch on the planet.”

Smackdown Live

  • Charlotte named to women’s Survivor Series team, but there has been some signs of doubt. Last week Paige asked her to be the captain of the team, Charlotte initially turned it down, but at Paige’s request Charlotte agreed to consider it. This week Paige announced the members of the team and when she announced Charlotte, she did not come out.
  • Becky Lynch responded to Ronda Rousey’s promo on Monday. Addressing Ronda mocking her former jobs, Becky said she wasn’t hand-picked like Ronda was. Becky also said that Ronda’s titanium body will be let down by her weak mind. Becky closed out by saying “I don’t care if you’re the baddest bitch on the planet, because I’m going to make you mine.”
  • The men’s Survivor Series team was announced tonight. Shane McMahon and Paige named Daniel Bryan and The Miz the co-captains. Together they selected Shane McMahon to join them. Daniel Bryan wanted Rey Mysterio to be on the team and The Miz agreed as long as he impressed in his match (which he did.) For the final member they each picked someone to fight for the final spot, Daniel Bryan picked Jeff Hardy and The Miz chose Samoa Joe with Samoa Joe winning the spot. After winning the match, Samoa Joe gloated in front of Daniel Bryan who attacked him, then The Miz when he yelled at him for attacking Joe, and lastly Daniel Bryan blindly arm dragged Shane who came down to calm everyone down.

•WWE in the Media

-Ronda Rousey was interviewed on The PWI Podcast last Thursday. Ronda was interviewed after being named the number one women’s wrestler in Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s first “Women’s 100” list which was expanded from the “Women’s 50.” Ronda talks about her expectations when arriving to WWE considering other people wrestle on the independent scene for years before being signed by WWE, but she didn’t have to do any of that. Ronda said she honestly expected fans and other wrestlers to hate her for that, but that everyone has been very welcoming and she also understands how privileged she is knowing that other women work for years just to get noticed.

Ronda said the biggest challenge is trying to cater to both her MMA fan base who is watching WWE for her, while also catering to the WWE fans and that’s a hard balance to find. Ronda talked about the tough travel schedule, saying her schedule is much easier than most of the wrestlers with WWE, noting that when she first joined she thought they only wrestled for television and there wasn’t a live event schedule.

Ronda also said that the one person she wants to wrestle right now is Sasha Banks and that she needs to improve her abilities before doing so because she doesn’t think she is on Sasha’s ability level right now. Ronda closes by talking about what the goals on women’s wrestling should be, saying in the short term she hopes they can main event Wrestlemania, but looking further into the future she’d love to see the women represent 50% of the roster and 50% of the matches on a PPV card. The interview with Ronda begins at 8:55 and you can listen to it HERE.

•WWE Social Media Highlights

Triple H shared a picture of his chest and arm Monday afternoon before his scheduled surgery Tuesday morning.

Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch had an exchange on Twitter this week. Becky is really embracing the new confidence in her character on Twitter picking fights with any WWE wrestler. Last week it was Alexa Bliss and this week it was Seth Rollins.

Karl Anderson tweeted this out on Sunday. This is a good look at the behind the scenes moments these wrestlers go through having to leave their family every week to travel.

Closing Commentary

-The Survivor Series main event (i.e. final match) needs to be Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch. While we still have one week of television for us to find out the majority of the Raw teams, nothing they could announce will change my mind. Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch has gotten the most build out of any of these “champion vs. champion” matches. Part of the reason for that was Crown Jewel and the men’s championships not all being decided. The Smackdown Tag Team Championships, the United States Championship, the WWE Championship, and the Universal Championship were all defended at Crown Jewel. The build towards Ronda vs. Becky started right after Evolution with the video of the two talking after they both successfully retained their championships. Becky Lynch has been excellent delivering promos and Ronda’s response Monday was good as well. I think that they’re doing an excellent job of building up the match even though there has been no face to face interaction. I know this match probably won’t go on last because Brock Lesnar is there and his match with AJ Styles could be pretty good as well, but I think the women should main event Survivor Series and to me it isn’t even a close call.

-Can we please stop with this ridiculous Survivor Series “brand supremacy” stuff? Two years in a row now of having to listen to the announcers pretend to care about their brand like anyone actually cares. Are there any WWE fans at all who only root for Raw or Smackdown like they are their own separate entities? What differentiates the two shows apart from name and primary color? They share the same equipment, the stage looks the same, the ring looks the same, Corey Graves is on both shows. The only other difference I can think of is the location of the commentary table. It’s annoying that November hits and suddenly everyone has brand loyalty and pride, it’s almost as ridiculous as when September or October hits and they have to find a reason to have feuds go into a Hell in a Cell match. The saving grace this year was actually Crown Jewel. As hard as it is to find a positive about that show, I think this is it. We may have escaped Survivor Series season without another awful invasion angle, but we still have one week to go so I’m not holding my breath.
