-Recaps from last week leading to our men’s #1 contender’s match.
(1) FRAXIOM (Nathan Frazer & Axiom) vs. NOAM DAR & ROMEO MORENO
It was a quick start with a lot of quick tags before I even finished writing the match header. Dar chopped down Frazer and covered for two. Frazer popped up with a kick and tagged in Axiom, and they did some quick team offense. Moreno jumped in and got taken out just as quickly, but after Dar got in a strike, Moreno flew off the top with a capoeira kick. Fraxiom bailed and Moreno hit both with a high cross-body from the top. Dar hit an uncharacteristic moonsault from the same turnbuckle and had his team in control as the match went to split-screen. [c]
Moreno laid in a big kick. Rope run and a lariat by Moreno. He hit a snap German. Dar tagged in and hit a slam into his armbar, but Frazer flew from the corner with a frog splash to break it up. Moreno and Dar got dumped to the outside, where both of Fraxiom hit tope suicidas. They went back in and hit two more. Back inside, Axiom hit a missile dropkick for a long two. “This is awesome” chant.
Axiom and Dar went to rollup reversals with each man getting a couple of two counts. Dar caught Axiom in an ankle lock, and Moreno caught an interfering Frazer with one. After the escape, Axiom hit a thrust kick on Moreno, and Frazer hit a superplex on Frazer. Moreno got two with an inside cradle. Axiom tried to superkick Moreno but hit Frazer, and Vic mentioned it was a callback. Dar and Moreno hit a double uranage and Dar got a very long two for another This is awesome chant. Axiom hit a super Spanish Fly on Moreno. Golden Ratio/flying splash combo finished.
WINNERS: Fraxiom in about 14 minutes.
Fraxiom put over their opponents and Frazer said “I think you just found your new tag team partner” to Dar.
(Wells’s Analysis: I quit smoking years ago, but I need a cigarette after that. This was a wild tag match with all the usual NXT hallmarks, but the work was always fantastic and it raised it above the usual spotfest)
-Wren Sinclair and Kendal Grey talked in the locker room. Wren reiterated that she won’t be at ringside tonight because she’s not cleared and it’ll be a distraction. Kendal still wanted her there, but Wren inisted. After Wren left, Lola Vice showed up and attempted an apology for accidentally hitting Kendal last week, but Kendal said it’s happened twice now and after she beats Kelani Jordan tonight, she’ll beat Lola.
-Mason Rook and Naraku walked (separately) through the back. [c]
-Sarah Schreiber hosted the Mr. NXT Pageant. First up: the runway. Evolve Champion Aaron Rourke, Kit Wilson, and comedian Matt Matthews were the judges. There was a crowd on hand as well (this was in the small venue used for Evolve; no idea if it was filmed live or earlier). Tristan Angels was first, and he had a “Blink if you Want Me” shirt on. He also walked with a very small pair of trunks with Union Jacks on it. Wilson had to shut the dropped-open mouth of Rourke, who is openly gay. Shiloh wore a ridiculous pair of goggles and flippers. Matthews like Hill and said “That’s a man right there,” while heel Wilson said it was an easy choice for Angels. Rourke likes Hill a lot, but said begrudgingly, the right answer here was Angels. Schreiber shared a QR code for fan votes.
(2) MASON ROOK vs. NARAKU – NXT Championship #1 contender’s match
Rook backed up Naraku to a corner, then missed with a back elbow as Naraku ducked. They locked up again and Naraku got the advantage in a corner, and threw a cheap right. Naraku tried a headlock that was broken quickly. Rook hit a big block. Tony D’Angelo was shown in an inset watching on a monitor. Rook hit a lariat and a standing senton for two. Rook charged and missed in a corner, and Naraku hit some elbows. Naraku hit a scoop slam with some very real effort on the large Rook. Rook bailed and the two jawed at each other as the match went to split-screen. [c]
Naraku was up in the corner and Rook threw chops up at him. Rook went up and hit a powerslam from the second turnbuckle. That’s loud with two men of this size. He covered for two. They went to the middle of the ring and did a strong-style exchange of forearms and strikes, with both staggering but neither going down. Rope run and Rook lifted Naraku for a rotation and a slam. Naraku impressively lifted up Rook on his back and slammed him for two. We went two for two on “This is awesome” chants on the night.
Fisherman suplex by Naraku got two. Rook hit a charging Naraku with a boot. Naraku hopped up on Rook’s back and went for a sleeper, but Rook fought it and broke it with a cannonball. Rook lifted up Naraku and Kam Hendrix showed up on the apron for the distraction. Rook bumped Hendrix to the floor, but he was left open to Entering the Abyss, which finished.
WINNER: Naraku at 9:41.
(Wells’s Analysis: After covering this man for seven years, it’s very hard to fight the urge to call him Evil and call his finisher Everything is Evil. This was a fun meat celebration and both guys brought it with the loud, heavy offense. Rook took his first singles loss but he’s protected. I figure Naraku’s stay in NXT will be short and Tony D will get past him at the Bash, but Tony D himself is much closer to the main roster than he’s ever been as well)
-Tavion Heights and Myles Borne ran into all four members of Vanity Project in the pantry. VP got all smarmy about Jackson Drake winning the North American Championship and Heights got fired up and said he would face Drake next week, and the winner would get Drake at the Bash. Borne said he didn’t have a problem with that.
-Kendal Grey and Wren Sinclair parted ways in the back ahead of whatever’s next. [c]
-In a promoted segment, Tate Wilder sat in a chair and talked about his love of extreme sports, interspersed with him doing some of the things he was talking about. Vic said Wilder is an adrenaline junkie.
(3) KENDAL GREY vs. KELANI JORDAN – NXT Women’s Championship #1 Contender’s match
Vic shared the genuinely shocking fact that Jordan has never once challenged for the NXT Women’s Championship. I would’ve set the over-under at about 4.5.
Jordan tried to jump Grey at the end of her entrance, but Grey was ready for it and she caught Jordan in a brief armbar. They reset and Jordan laid in a boot and threw Grey down to the mat and covered for one. Both women missed shots before Grey hit a dropkick for two. Jordan hit a back elbow and laid in some shots in the corner. Grey evaded a corner shot but Jordan caught her shortly after and worked her over with a trio of knee lifts. Jordan charged Grey to a corner, then did it again. Jordan went for a teardrop but Grey evaded and hit a rana. Running uppercut by Grey. Jordan threw Grey off of her in the corner and then hung up Grey on the top rope. Jordan dumped Grey on the ramp side, then slid out and hit a neckbreaker as the match went to split-screen. [c]
Rope run and a block by Jordan, and Grey went tumbling out on the ramp side. Grey yanked down Jordan and they hit a double clothesline on the floor and the count began. The ref got to eight and both women slid back into the ring at the same time. Lola Vice was shown watching on a monitor. The two exchanged some shots and Grey started to string it together. She hit an overhead belly-to-belly and fired up, lowering the upper part of her singlet. She ran right into a uranage by Jordan, who covered, but referee Jeremy Marcus caught Jordan trying to use the ropes and waved off the cover.
[HOUR TWO]
The two exchanged submissions on the mat, then slowly got back into it. Grey very slowly went up in a corner and then jumped off the top and got superkicked in one of those spots where it didn’t look like the person on the top was even trying to hit something. Jordan followed up with a five star frog splash and covered for a long two. Jordan went for a springboard move in the corner but Grey caught her in an armbar. Jordan fought furiously to break the hold. Jordan went to the leg submission that’s been winning matches for her and is the kayfabe(?) reason for Wren Sinclair’s injury.
The two exchanged rollups for two. Grey hit Shades of Grey out of relative nowhere for the win. One more time, Kelani is a bridesmaid.
WINNER: Kendal Grey at 13:01.
(Wells’s Analysis: It was the only match of the night not to get a “This is awesome” chant, but it was the best match of the night so far. It seems Jordan has a lot of fans in the company but she’s always hot at the wrong time, leading to the continuation of her never once getting a championship match. I’m still colder than most on Grey, who’s a very good wrestler but still displays almost zero personality in the ring. They clearly love her, so we’ll see how they follow up on the very good two-week sit-down interview she had recently)
-Mr NXT Pageant: Talent competition. Shiloh Hill very quickly solved a Rubik’s Cube, then did that thing with the string and the cylinders that I don’t know how to describe but definitely has a name. Angels showed up and tossed Hill out of the way and tried the Rubik’s Cube, which didn’t go well. He smashed it in frustration, and the judges simply said it was obvious who won the segment. Schreiber again shared the QR code. [c]
-Blake Howard talked to Tony D’Angelo about Naraku. D said the win was impressive, and he’s always been, but he “doesn’t get his vibe.” He said he needs to bring “every ounce of Evil” to their match. Naraku showed up and presented D with another envelope with Kanji characters on it. He left right away. D looked at the contents of the card and glared out at Naraku, but we didn’t see it.
(4) JASPER TROY vs. DION LENNOX (w/Osiris Griffin)
DarkState looked around during their entrance, trying to make sure Saquon Shugars wasn’t around. Action spilled outside early and Troy got the advantage. Back inside, Troy hit a big block and a body slam for two. Lennox bailed and Troy pulled him up onto the apron where Lennox hit a back elbow. Lennox sidestepped a chokeslam attempt, then snapped on a front chancery. Lennox threw rights and was in control when on the tron, Shugars showed up with his baseball bat and said “Hey, yo, D! Watch your back.” Troy took the advantage as the match went to commercial. [c]
Lennox was in control. He worked a headlock on the mat. Troy tossed Lennox off of him, but Lennox hit a dropkick. Troy charged Lennox to a corner, then hit a powerslam but couldn’t capitalize after the heat segment. Lennox popped up and then Troy, of all people, kipped up to a “What the hell?” from Booker T. Troy put down Lennox near a corner and Troy climbed up, and Booker T invoked the name of Vader. Griffin caused a distraction and Lennox finished Troy.
WINNER: Dion Lennox at 8:10.
Saquon showed up on the tron again, and the video lagged a couple of times to act like it was real, but Shugars showed up with his bat and took out Griffin, but Lennox was able to avoid the same fate and Shugars left, victorious enough.
(Wells’s Analysis: They’re trusting Troy with slightly longer matches, which is cool, but a giant can’t lose too many matches before his aura is gone. Lennox, though, is a far better wrestler at this point in their careers, and he’s got the story going on with Shugars feuding with his old faction)
-Vic promoted the final segment of the Mr. NXT Pageant, public speaking, after the break. [c]
-Vic promoted Triplemania 34.
-Mr. NXT: Public Speaking. This one was live in the ring. She then introduced the judges to the expected reactions. Angels went first and got massive boos despite doing a very good job, but he knew his assignment and he kept saying “order, order” and he heeled on the crowd saying they reminded him of the pigs on his farm. He said he’d already tattooed “Mr. NXT” on the back of his leg. I highly doubt this is the case, and it could possibly be a reference to MJF, I guess.
Hill went next and got uncharacteristically humble and real, rather than silly, talking briefly about his journey and why he should be Mr. NXT. Matthews said “from one trailer park to the other, I have to say I’m impressed with you. He also said he’s impressed Angels got rid of his ramen noodle hairstyle and blew it out. He voted for Hill. Wilson said Hill was toxic. Angels was psyched but Wilson said he was toxic as well. He chose Angels, though, with a “Yes boy!” Rourke put them both over and said it should be up to the fans.
After a brief drum roll, a graphic revealed that Hill was the winner. There was no percentage shown or anything, which was a bummer. Angels lost his mind and went at Hill with a chair, even hitting his finisher on it. His music played to boos.
-Naraku and Robert Stone ran into each other in the back. Stone asked Naraku what was in the card. Keanu Carver showed up and Naraku took off and Carver said he wanted an opponent. Stone said he’d figure it out before next week. Carver said if he doesn’t, he’ll choose one himself.
-Tatum Paxley and Zaria were shown walking separately ahead of the main event. [c]
-Next week, Nattie faces Jaida Parker, and Tavion Heights faces Jackson Drake for top contendership for the North American Championship. Additionally, Tony D & Naraku have a sit-down. Arianna Grace, Layla Diggs, Izzi Dame and Thea Hail will be in the Speed Tournament also.
-The Culling talked in the back. Dame wondered why she was in the tournament. Shawn Spears said he got her into it, and her opponent is Thea Hail, which is a layup. Dame and Niko Vance agreed, which is a departure from the recent issues, though the tension was still there.
(5) TATUM PAXLEY (c) vs. ZARIA – NXT Women’s North American Championship match
Mike Rome handled formal introductions.
Zaria went for a quick F-5. Paxley wriggled free. Zaria hit a spear for a long two. If this show didn’t have a clear end time, that would’ve been a thrilling near-fall. Zaria slowed it down. She bealed Paxley, then hit a high-release suplex. Paxley managed a couple of kicks to get separation but Zaria hit a German suplex. Zaria charged and missed in a corner and Paxley floated over with a double stomp. Paxley hit a moonsault to the outside. She had control, but Zaria recovered and stalked Paxley as the match went to split-screen. [c]
Paxley evaded a slam and took down Zaria. Both women sold on the mat. Paxley hit a couple of ax-handles. Paxley hit a somersault leg drop on a draped Zaria, then hit another inside for two. Paxley set up a pump-handle slam but Zaria fought it off and hit a suplex. She went for another but Paxley leaped through. Paxley fired up and went high and missed, and Zaria hit a spear for a long two.
Things slowed down and the women got to their feet and threw rights. There was an exchange of rights. Rope run and a superkick by Paxley. Paxley went up and Zaria threw up a right to slow her down. Zaria went up with Paxley but Paxley wriggled free and hit a superkick. Zaria ended up in the tree of woe and Paxley went up in another corner and went coast-to-coast for a dropkick for a long two. Zaria fought off Cemetery Drive, but Paxley fought out of the F-5. Action went outside where Zaria hit an F-5 on the floor. Back inside, spear by Zaria, and one more F-5. That’s about as definitive a win as you can have.
WINNER: Zaria at 10:46.
(Wells’s Analysis: Zaria finally wins a championship in NXT. On one hand it’s disappointing that she didn’t go for the big one, but it does make sense that she wanted the one that Sol Ruca kept denying her. Paxley had a fine if somewhat nondescript reign, but Zaria’s on such a roll after Ruca gave her the rub. The match was a good one, with Zaria hitting a spear early, and then a couple more times throughout, leading to a definitive win that didn’t bury Paxley as she was resilient throughout. The match was only marred by the fact that everything pointed squarely to Zaria winning here (including the fact that it got the main event slot).)
FINAL THOUGHTS: The episode was the kind I like, with just five matches, time given to each, and not an overly busy show. The matches tonight all either delivered or over-delivered, and pieces were set for Great American Bash as well as next week’s show. Nate Lindberg and I will talk it over shortly on PWT Talks NXT.
