Commentators: Roberto Figueroa, Marcelo Rodriguez, Jose Manuel Guillen (Spanish), and Corey Graves, Konnan, John Bradshaw Layfield (English)
Ring Announcer: Lillian Garcia
[HOUR ONE]
-Triple H and Shawn Michaels passed by The Undertaker while walking down the hallway. Penta, Rey Mysterio, Dominick, and El Hijo del Vikingo were shown entering the building. Vikingo was loudly booed.
-Aida Cuevas sang the Mexican National Anthem with the usual in-ring ceremony of WWE and AAA dignitaries standing behind her. She was followed by Lillian Garcia’s rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner.
-The Spanish announce team of Roberto Figueroa, Marcelo Rodriguez, and Jose Manuel Guillen introduced the show.
-Penta made his ring entrance, much to the crowd’s delight. He got the crowd fired up, talking about it being Mexican Independence weekend. My Spanish is a little rusty, but I caught some of it. I believe he said he wanted to challenge the winner of tonight’s main event for the AAA Mega Championship.
(1) OCTAGON JR & LAREDO KID & LA PARKA & MASCARITA SAGRADA vs. CRUZ DEL TORO & JOAQUIN WILDE & LINCE DORADO & ABISMO NEGRO JR – 8-Man Tag Team Match
Dorado and Octagon began by showcasing their spectacular lucha libre skills. They shook hands before tagging out to Laredo and Del Toro. Laredo slapped the taste out of Del Toro’s mouth before climbing the ropes with him and hitting a top rope Frankensteiner, but Del Toro, amazingly, landed on his feet. Laredo tagged out to La Parka to a huge ovation from the crowd. He and Wilde had a brief dance-off before kicking it into gear. La Parka was a real crowd-pleaser here with his athleticism and antics. Sagrada tagged in and may have gotten the biggest pop yet.
Sagrada showed amazing skill and quickness before tagging back out to Laredo. Octagon performed an amazing springboard twisting moonsault that had to be seen to be believed. The LWO contingent, who were booed, cut Laredo off from his corner with some flashy moves of their own. The announce team mentioned that Abismo is quite large and powerful for a mini. Sagrada took a hot tag and spun around Abismo about 87 times before dropping him. Amazing! He hit a Michinoku driver on Wilde, then went to the top and dove onto Abismo on the outside.
Del Toro and Octagon traded corner to corner forearms. Everything came unglued at this point, with everyone getting their licks in. They began a pileup on the outside, with everyone diving through and off the ropes to the floor, ending with Wilde hitting his incredible slingshot dive about halfway up the aisle. The chaos finally ended with Sagrada getting the pin on Abismo.
WINNERS: Octagon Jr & Laredo Kid & La Parka & Mascarita Sagrada at 18:07.
(Miller’s Take: Well, this was more fun than a barrel of monkeys! This was crazy good, and a great way to start off the night by showcasing some of lucha libre’s finest. Del Toro and Wilde are so good, but they are just out of their element in WWE. Their talents are much better showcased here. I’m hoping we can see some more of the AAA roster on WWE programming in the future. I think La Parka and Mascarita Sagrada, especially, would be well-received.)
-Vero Rodriguez interviewed Rey Mysterio backstage. As he was talking, Dom waltzed up and ran his mouth. He told his dad he should put the title around his waist when he wins. Rey said he would IF he wins. Finn Balor walked up and said Dom should win it on his own, with nobody in his corner. Dom didn’t look terribly thrilled.
-A video package aired of Natalya and Faby Apache cutting promos on each other.
(2) FABY APACHE vs. NATALYA
Natalya was in her gritty Nattie persona for this match, as she normally is outside of WWE. Both women traded standing switches at the bell. They collided mid-ring, with neither giving an inch. Nattie was wrestling very aggressively against the equally experienced Faby. Nattie went to work on Faby’s knee, then stood on her head. She followed that up with a vicious surfboard and held her there for a good 20 seconds.
Faby almost caught her with a small package, but Nattie kicked out at the last second. Faby fired up and took down Nattie with a top rope cross body but only got a two-count. Nattie found herself having to fight hard out of a body lock, but Faby locked in a guillotine while still holding onto the body scissors. Nattie powered her up and slammed her to the mat, then applied an ankle lock.
Faby answered with an ankle lock of her own. Nattie kicked her off, but then ate a boot as she went for a discus punch. Faby went for a sharpshooter, but couldn’t cinch it in. Natalya got the better of a series of reversals and finally got the clean pin. After the match, the two still wanted more of each other, but the referee was able to keep them apart.
WINNER: Natalya at 9:14.
(Miller’s Take: This version of Natalya is so much more interesting than the showy, cat ear-wearing Natalya we see in WWE. Nothing terribly memorable here, but it was a solid match, nonetheless.)
-A video package was shown revealing that WrestleMania 43 would be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I don’t think this was a huge surprise, and neither was the chorus of boos and chants of “you sold out”.
-Speaking of boos, Vikingo was shown warming up in the back.
-Chuey Martinez interviewed The New Day with Grayson Waller. Kingston said they would win the AAA tag team championship. Woods said he was injured due to all of the Mexican Destroyers he took from Penta and Grayson Waller would be taking his place.
(3) PAGANO & PYSCHO CLOWN (c) vs. KOFI KINGSTON & GRAYSON WALLER (w/Xavier Woods) – AAA Tag Team Championship Match
Waller began against Psycho. He took down the clown and then slid out to brag with Woods. He began showing off in the ring, but Psycho got the better of him and then slid out of the ring to put his arm around Woods, who thought it was Waller at first, then screamed as he realized it was the clown. That spot never gets old! Pagano tagged in and worked over Waller for a bit, then took over on Kingston when he tagged in.
Kingston showed off after landing on his feet from a monkey flip, but paid for it. Pagano and Psycho double dropkicked the back of Kingston. Psycho followed it up with a split-legged moonsault for a two-count. Waller involved himself from the corner behind the referee’s back, allowing Kingston to take over on Psycho. They tagged in and out quickly, with each delivering a series of stomps. Pagano had been taken out as Psycho crawled over for a tag, and Waller kept beating on him. Kingston tagged in and took over. Psycho managed to hit a cross body off the top and finally got the hot tag on his partner.
Pagano quickly went to work on both challengers, eventually dropping Kingston to the mat for a two-count. The champs hit a couple of incredible dives onto the challengers on the floor. Back in the ring, they hit stereo corner impact moves. Pagano climbed to the top but got distracted when Woods climbed on the ring apron, allowing him to get thumped on. Psycho Clown began viciously whipping Kingston and Waller with belt, then tore off the front of his mask to reveal a bloody skull in front of Woods, who ran to the back in horror. Psycho Clown cradled Waller for the pin.
WINNERS: Pagano & Psycho Clown at 16:56 to retain the AAA Tag Team Titles.
(Miller’s Take: This was a really good tag team title defense. Pagano & Psycho Clown are crazy over in AAA, and the makeshift team of Waller & Kingston worked well together.)
-After the match, Vero Rodriguez entered the ring to conduct a post-match interview with the champions when the arena went dark and The Wyatt Sicks’s music hit. They surrounded the ring, but the AAA champs went on the attack. They were very quickly outnumbered and overpowered by the WWE Tag Team Champions and Rowan, who put Pagano and Psycho Clown through tables. Uncle Howdy also hit Sister Abigail. After the slaughter, the Wyatts picked up the AAA tag belts and held them overhead in a clear challenge.
-Charlotte Flair was shown in the crowd.
-A video package aired of the events leading up to the mixed tag team match coming up.
(4) LOLA VICE & MR. IGUANA vs. ROXANNE PEREZ & FINN BALOR (w/Raquel Rodriguez) – Mixed Tag Team Match
As Vice entered the ring, NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne was shown in the crowd. Layfield ranted about the bag Balor brought to the ring with him, seemingly terrified it might contain Demonito. The men started the match, with neither asserting dominance. Balor went for the bag, but Iguana chucked it under the ring and gave a cheesy thumbs up to the camera. Vice tagged in and looked like she was ready to throw down with Balor. Perez sneak attacked her from behind, but Vice quickly took control. Perez screamed in fear as she was taken down, then conferred with her partner on the outside until Vice took them both out.
Tag to the men. Iguana got tripped by Perez, who then pulled him out of the ring, lifted him, and dropped him face-first to the canvas. Balor easily took control once Iguana was back in the ring. He tried tagging out, but couldn’t quite reach Vice. As Balor put him down, he did the dying Iguana with his hands and feet up. Suddenly, Demonito appeared from between the apron and the ring banner, scaring the bejesus out of Iguana, Perez, and Rodriguez. Balor went over and shoved him back down while saying, “Wait for me…you’re gonna get hurt.” That was funny.
Vice tagged in and hit her side kicks, followed by a hip attack on Perez. Roxanne soon raked the eyes and hit her double springboard moonsault for a near-fall. Vice went for a rear naked choke, but Perez fought out with crazy windmill punches as she screamed bloody murder. She lifted Vice onto the turnbuckle, but Iguana threw La Yesca at her and she freaked out, allowing Vice to drop her to the mat with an armbar. As Iguana put on La Yesca, Balor came up from behind him with Demonito. They battled with the puppets on their hands for a bit. Balor wrapped Demonito over his shoulder and attempted a coup de gras, but was thwarted by Vice.
With Balor and Demonito on the outside, Iguana threw La Yesca over the top rope, knocking Demonito off Balor’s hand and to the floor. This was highly entertaining stuff! Iguana then dove onto Balor. In the ring, Vice took out Perez with a hard back fist for the pin. Jacy Jayne was shown looking disgusted.
WINNERS: Lola Vice & Mr. Iguana at 11:57.
(Miller’s Take: This was so much fun! The battle between La Yesca and Demonito showcased that Balor can have a fun side as well. Not surprising that Vice got the pin, seeing how she’s being built up as a serious threat to Jacy Jayne’s NXT Women’s title.)
-A video package showcasing the upcoming fatal four way match was shown.
(5) HIJO DEL DR. WAGNER JR (c) vs. JD MCDONAGH vs. ETHAN PAGE vs. DRAGON LEE – AAA Latin American Fatal Four-Way Match
Lee and McDonagh immediately went after each other, as did Wagner and Page. Each man took turns with offense. With Page slumped in the corner, Lee took JD down headfirst into Page’s nether regions. JD came back quickly and took control of Wagner. JD’s chest was already noticeably beet-red. Page got a very near-fall on Lee, then tied his mask to the bottom rope. Lee freed himself, but continued being worked over by the North American champ.
All four men started going at it as the arena lights came on in an apparent technical difficulty, making it look like daytime in an outdoor stadium. The lights went back off with Lee in charge of JD. Page tried covering JD, but was dragged out by Wagner, and they began trading blows. All four started trading finishers. After a Wagner Driver, McDonagh ate the pin.
WINNER: Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr at 10:01 to retain the AAA Latin American Championship.
(Miller’s Take: Good, quick action here. Not a surprising finish, seeing how Wagner just won the belt back at Triplemania. You can’t go wrong when you put these four superior wrestlers in the ring with together.)
-A video package aired of the main event competitors, followed by shots of both men making their way to the gorilla position.
(6) EL HIJO DEL VIKINGO (c) vs. DOMINIK MYSTERIO – AAA Mega Championship Match
Dirty Dom was obviously heavily favored by the Vegas crowd. They started with some very realistic-looking chain wrestling that didn’t look overly choreographed, but more like two wrestlers really trying to best each other. With Dom standing on the outside, Vikingo dove through the ropes with a battering ram maneuver, planting the top of his head into Dom’s sternum. The two traded vicious chops, then Dom threw Vikingo into the steps so hard he almost became one with them. Dom hit another chop that sounded like a shotgun going off, then threw him back in the ring.
Dom hit the Three Amigos to a chant of “Eddie”. Vikingo had some slick moves, but Dom quickly put an end to his fancy offense. He got a two-count after a senton as he began slowing down the pace. Vikingo hit a superkick, but got hung into the ropes by Dom as he charged in. Dom grabbed the title belt, but put it back down as he yelled at Konnan that he never won that.
Vikingo hit a beautiful dropkick to the mush, then crossed Dom’s eyes with a meteora. Dom sneaked in a sit-out powerbomb for a two-count. He attempted a 619, but was caught. Vikingo dragged him to the corner and hit a picture-perfect 450 splash for a near-fall.
Balor and McDonagh ran to ringside. Balor distracted the referee while JD used his giant cranium to deliver a headbutt to Vikingo. Dom hit a Michinoku Driver for a two-count. This time, McDonagh distracted the referee while Dom put on a mask and Balor handed him the metal plate to load it with. Before he could load his mask, Vikingo kicked him and the plate went flying out of the ring. Dragon Lee ran out, but Balor and McDonagh put the boots to him. Rey Mysterio then ran out with a chair, and he and Lee chased Judgement Day to the back.
Vikingo hit a spectacular 450 senton, but the referee was pulled out of the ring by El Grande Americano. Dom landed a 619, followed by a splash, but by the time a new referee made it to the ring, Vikingo kicked out of the pin. He hit a poisonrana, then ran over to try to take the mask off El Grande Kaiser. As they struggled, Amerikaiser threw the plate into the ring. Dom loaded the mask and nailed Vikingo with a flying headbutt. He connected with a frog splash for the pin and the victory.
WINNER: Dominik Mysterio at 18:25 to capture the AAA Mega Championship.
(Miller’s Take: A bit of a trainwreck at the end with all the extracurricular activities, but that was fantastic! Dom got a huge pop as the referee’s hand slapped the mat for the third time. Vikingo is really good, and I’m not sure why he’s been booed so vociferously, but Dom winning was the smart call here. This definitely delivered.)
-After the match, Rey Mysterio dejectedly came to the ring and handed the Mega title belt to Dom, who threw it back at him and demanded he strap it around his waist as promised. Dom screamed at his father as he went forehead to forehead with him, then grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him to the center of the ring. Rey reluctantly strapped the belt around his son’s waist and left. The Judgement Day came to the ring to celebrate with Dom, then El Grande Americano slid into the ring. Dom low-key hugged his stablemates, then exuberantly celebrated with Americano as they looked on slightly confused. Dom got in the camera and called himself the king of the luchadors.
FINAL THOUGHTS: This was very good from top to bottom. Definitely worth going out of your way to see. The only thing that dragged this show down a bit was the boorish commentary from JBL, who constantly mispronounced Spanish words and droned on about Dom’s “deadbeat dad” during the main event. MVP’s of the show were Mascarita Sagrada, Lola Vice, and Dirty Dom. The unexpected appearance of The Wyatt Sicks was very newsworthy, and a possible title for title match against Psycho Clown and Pagano could be a potential showstopper. AAA has the potential to reach new heights and new popularity under the umbrella of WWE, and the fans are the beneficiaries.
