[HOUR ONE]
-They opened with a recap of the developments with Jacob Fatu, The Usos, and Roman Reigns last week.
-An (overly produced) segment aired with Roman sitting at a table flanked by Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso having a meeting. (Who sits next to each other at a meeting rather than facing each other unless you’re creating a TV segment?) Reigns said he appreciated them coming and being there with him. He said they know where he comes from and they understand where I stands. He said the past is the past and he’s going to leave it there. He said he wanted their thoughts because he didn’t know where Fatu was coming from. He said he explained on ESPN that everyone had two years to take advantage of him taking a back seat and he procrastinated. He said he then “climbed the mountain” and beat C.M. Punk.
Jimmy said he agreed with Roman, but he also understands Fatu’s position. He said he wants to upgrade his house for his family. He said that shouldn’t come at the expense of Reigns. Jey then said Fatu is dangerous, noting what happened to the MFTs on Smackdown. He said he’s become “the shot caller” now. He said there has to be consequences. Reigns said they aren’t doing charity. He thanked Jey and said he’s going to chew on it and make it his own and address is later. Jey and Jimmy reached across Roman and shook hands. Reigns put his hand over theirs and looked into the camera and said, “The First Family.”
(Keller’s Analysis: That was 50 percent too slick to feel authentic. Nobody has an important meeting by sitting side by side on the same edge of a table unless they’re producing a TV segment and want to face the camera, but a semi-circle would have worked well and been somewhat natural. The musical score is so over-the-top that it feels like the whole thing was staged for TV rather than a camera capturing a candid, tense meeting with family. Roman and the Usos are good enough in their roles and have established characters, they don’t need this to be “cinema” in a way that undercuts it feeling genuine. I’m still not sure where this goes, but Roman was super-popular, and then he and C.M. Punk tore each other apart and now Roman is opposing Fatu, who is also super popular. I think fans would rather cheer Roman against an actual heel who they want to see him beat up, but WWE doesn’t focus on that and so they get stuck with this – which is a flawed yet compelling storyline that doesn’t really fit what pro wrestling is where the live crowd favoring one wrestler over another creates those peak experiences. A novelty face-face situation now and then is great, but it’s just one feud after another after another that leaves fans conflicted over ambiguity over who they want to cheat which leads to ambivalence in a lot of cases.)
-They cut to Jacob Fatu. Michael Cole said Fatu is “awaiting the decision of Roman Reigns later tonight” and “the future hangs in the balance for Fatu.”
(Keller’s Analysis; What is Roman’s decision and what future hangs in the balance? We can piece it together, of course, from last week and some of what Roman said, but it’s not necessarily so clear that Cole shouldn’t state what that decision is and what’s at stake.)
-Seth Rollins made his ring entrance to his song, leading to fans singing his song. He said Bron Breakker is the reason he lost to Gunther at WrestleMania. He called out Bron with his “little pea brain.” Breakker marched out, followed closely behind by Paul Heyman. Seth and Bron went face to face a few inches apart. Seth said he gave Bron everything on a silver platter and he repaid him by “taking everything away from me.” He said he was the reason he has to forfeit the WWE Title and why he didn’t main event WrestleMania and why he didn’t get his arm raised at WrestleMania. He asked how it benefited Bron.
Heyman was going to speak, but then he paused and looked at Bron and handed him the mic instead. Breakker said, “What did you give Reed and I.” (Grammar Police run-in: “Reed and me.”) He told Seth he needed them to fight his battles for him and put out all his fires that he started on his own. He said he has no friends and is nothing. He said every week, he came out there and kicked off the show and he and Bronson Reed had to listen to him “regurgitate the same stuff every week.” He mocked Seth’s catch phrases. Bron said he never needed him or his vision. He said he only needed Heyman.
Seth called Heyman a “dried up sack of meat.” He asked, “You needed that guy?” He said he called Shawn Michaels and asked him to send him his best to face and he sent him Breakker. He said last year, Heyman asked him how he felt about taking Breakker under his wing. Seth said with one year under his tutelage, he thought Breakker would be “the next main event money-drawing star in this industry.” He said Bron “has it all.” He said he is the biggest, strongest, fastest, and most versatile performer he’s seen in his 14 years in the industry. He said he has everything except the most important thing. He pointed at his head. He said he knows better than anybody what it means to be a young 28 year old that comes into WWE thinking the business owes him everything. He said he knows what it means to bet on yourself and make tough decisions that people aren’t going to be happy with. He said he succeeded, whereas Bron is still just trying.
Seth said every time he bet on himself, it results in main events or world titles, whereas Bron got Austin Theory and Logan Paul “and steak dinners and happy endings from Paul Heyman.” He told Breakker he is not ready. Breakker smiled and said, “I’m not ready? That’s the narrative you are going for?” He said with or without Seth, he was well on his way to becoming a main eventer. He said Seth’s body and mind are brittle and his shoulder can’t handle the weight of a strap on it anymore. Bron said he tried to win the world title and came up short, but he can rest easy because he lost to the best in the world “instead of somebody who self-proclaims it.” He said Seth has all the accolades and championship and is “a first ballot WWE Hall of Famer” He said he is “the very best pro wrestler in the entire world …. [pause]… at being number two.”
Seth said, “That was pretty good, Baby Steiner.” He asked if he came up with that on his own or did he “call Big Papa Pump for his hook-up?” He said he’ll give him an opportunity to back up his words at Backlash in two weeks. He sold him as a Steiner, he’s not even no. 2 in his own family.
-Cole asked Corey Graves if he thinks Breakker is ready. Graves said he wasn’t sure who had the ability to overcome the psychological mind games from Seth.
-They showed Bayley and Lyra Valkyria earlier in the arena. Then they cut to Joe Hendry strumming his guitar in the empty stands. Then Becky Lynch in the parking lot. When they showed Stephanie Vaquer, Raquel Rodriguez attacked her. Roxanne Perez smiledand then shoved a rolling crate into Vaquer.
-Penta made his ring entrance. [c]
-Cole plugged tickets going on sale for Summerslam in Minneapolis, Minn. on Aug. 1 and 2.
(1) PENTA vs. RUSEV
Rusev’s ring entrance aired. Before the bell, “All Ego” Ethan Page made his entrance. Graves told Cole to stand up and pay respect to a man who might be steering the ship in a while. Ethan sat at ringside. The bell rang 29 minutes into the hour. Rusev controlled the opening minute. Penta made a comeback and knocked Rusev to ringside with a dropkick and then flew over the top rope and flipped onto Rusev. Ethan stood and applauded. Ethan told him to keep his eyes on the prize. Rusev went after Penta at ringside, Penta overcame and threw Rusev back into the ring. Rusev kicked him out of mid-air and slammed him as tehy cut to a break at 2:00. [c]
Back live, Rusev set up a superplex, but Penta blocked it and knocked Rusev hard to the mat. Cole asked Graves who Ethan was rooting for. Graves asked him. Ethan said Rusev. Rusev landed his Machka Kick and then set up an Accolade. Rusev stomped on Penta. Penta slipped free and teased a springboard move, but paused and instead rolled up Rusev for a leverage three count.
WINNER: Penta in 8:00.
-Rusev attacked Penta afterward and stood over him with a scowl. He stomped away at Penta. Ethan joined in the beatdown. Je’Von Evans skipped out to his music to even the odds. He springboard clotheslined Ethan. Penta superkicked Rusev. Evans then gave Rusev an OG Cutter.
(Keller’s Analysis: This is that example of role designations matching up with the types of wrestlers fans want to cheer and boo, and it leads to genuine fun crowd reactions as Evans and Penta sent Ethan and Rusev scurrying away. It’s not passe or old school; it’s what WWE should aim for at the main event level more often with the top acts.)
-They went to Cole and Graves at ringside. They plugged Hogan’s four-part documentary series on Netflix. A highlight package aired.
-A vignette aired with El Grande Americano, Reyo, and Bravo. Americano said he’d be competing in a mask vs. mask match in a few weeks. He said it’ll be the most important match of his life and the biggest fight he’s ever had. He said he’ll be fighting for his name and colors. He said he’ll prepare by issuing a respectful challenge to the biggest Lucha star around, Rey Mysterio.
-Cole said it’d be an honor to call that match tonight.
-Becky Lynch made her way to the ring. [c]
-Cole and Graves commented on highlights of Becky beating A.J. Lee to win the Intercontinental Title.
-Becky stood mid-ring after her music stopped to scattered boos. She said she has come around to Laredo, Texas. Fans cheered the mention of their town. She touted that she has become the first woman to win four different titles at WrestleMania and the first-ever three-time Women’s IC Champion. She said she’s won more WrestleMania matches in history than any other woman. She said she’s coming for Undertaker’s record next. Sher said she proved she’s the greatest female wrestler ever. She said Sports Illustrated and Bleacher Report said it. She said it’s all great, but what happened afterward was better.
She said she saw her baby girl sitting in the front row and she was able to take her out and walk with her up the ramp. She said she realized she needed to show her what a real champion was. She said it’s not the five-star hotels and fancy tour buses and private jets, “even though I indulge in all of those.” She said it’s about “showing up in rundown towns like Laredo” and “showing up for common folk like each and every one of you.” She said they want her to defend her title not just against nostalgia acts and underdogs. She issued an open challenge to whoever wanted to come out there and look her in the eyes. “Who’s it going to be?” she said. “Come on!”
Iyo Sky made her way out and said she accepted. Becky said she said she wanted to fight new, shiny, exciting, and the best of the best, “and you are none of those things.” Fans booed. Becky said they were booing Iyo. Fans fired back with a loud “Iyo!” chant. Becky asked if she was going to actually get Rhea Ripley coming out now. She said she wanted to fight Shawn Michaels, not Marty Jannetty. “Clearly you’ve been holding her back,” she said. Iyo smacked Becky in response. Iyo stomped away at Becky. Becky rolled to ringside and grabbed her felt and began to leave. Raw G.M. Adam Pearce stepped out and asked Becky where she was going. Her said she issued an open challenge and Iyo answered it, so the match was now.
Becky attacked Sky. The ref pushed her back. Cole said the match would happen. [c]
(2) BECKY LYNCH vs. IYO SKY – Intercontinental Title match
The match was joined in progress 55 minutes into the hour. Sky was in control and played to the crowd. Becky took over again and delivered a Becksploder suplex. Sky rolled to ringside. Becky slidekicked her and then threw her back into the ring. Becky landed a top rope legdrop for a two count at roughly 3:00. Fans chanted, “Let’s go, Iyo!” Cole said Rey vs. El Grande was made official for later. Cole congratulated Tiffany Stratton on her U.S. Title win last Friday on Smackdown.
[HOUR TWO]
Iyo avoided a Manhandle Slam. Becky rolled to ringside. When Iyo dove toward her, Becky forearmed her out of mid-air. She then sunset bombed Becky off the ring apron. Both were down as they cut to a break around 8:00. [c]
Iyo landed a superkick to the chin and a butterfly backbreaker for a near fall around 12:00. Sky lifted her knees on a Over the Moonsault attempt and then scored a near fall. When Becky climbed to the top rope, Sky shoved her and then landed an Asai moonsault at ringside. Asuka came out and tripped Sky, who landed hard on the ring apron. Becky then landed a Manhandle Slam for the three count.
WINNER: Lynch in around 13:00 to retain the IC Title.
-The ref interbened on Asuka entering the ring afterward. Asuka put her foot on Sky’s chest. “She just won’t let it go,” said Asuka.
-Backstage, the original El Grande Americano (alleged Chad Gable) talked to Rey Mysterio backstage. He asked if he has to watch his back in the hair vs. hair match. Rey said he wants both of them to respect Lucha Libre and that’s what he cares about. When Rey spoke in Spanish, El Grande froze and then said “sí.” The imposter El Grande with Reyo and Bravo walked in. They bickered in Spanish.
-Byron Saxton interviewed the Usos backstage. He asked for intel on which direction Roman is leaning. Jimmy said The OTC would make the decision when he’s ready. L.A. Knight walked in and asked if they are sitting at the table again. He said he wanted to remind him who they are. He told Jey he became champion on his own. He said Jimmy won’t wise in the shadow of Roman. Jey said he should mind his own business. Jimmy said it’s family business. Knight said he respects that, but the power they have eventually corrupts and then it becomes his business.
-Cole plugged Reigns answering Fatu’s challenge for Backlash. [c]
-Joe Hendry sat mid-ring and said, “Say his name because he has appeared in Laredo, Texas.” He said he had a big decision to make lately and he wanted to tell them all about it in a song. He said he’s won titles everywhere he’s gone and he’s been on WrestleMania and many other shows, but the time has come for him to pick one brand, and he’s sorry to the others, but he hoped they understand Joe Hendry signed to Raw. He said next time they turn on Netflix, they won’t just want to chill since they’ll have him believing in a better kind of thrill. He said respect to the ruler and he acknowledges The OTC, but he asked Pearce to fire Logan Paul. Fans cheered that. He asked everyone to sing, “Paul, Paul, can we fire Logan Paul.” Logan’s music interrupted.
Logan and Austin Theory came out. Logan screeched, “You can’t fire me! I’m unfireable.” Theory encouraged Logan and looked outraged himself. He told fans one at a time they were awful. He told Hendry he just made the worst mistake of his life so his first night on Raw will be his last. Cole said, “It was all in good fun.” Theory said he and Logan hold gold and are the greatest tag champions of the world. He said they are winners. Hendry asked fans if they were winners. “Joe says no to that,” he said. “All I see are a couple of prime time losers,” referencing their WrestleMania match.
Theory said The Vision goes through everyone and they’re going to go through him tonight. Hendry clotheslined Theory. He then slammed Logan into the corner. Theory held Hendry as Logan punched away at him. Cole said it was all in good fun and Logan just blew his top. The Street Profits charged out for the save. Montez was going to leap off the top rope onto Theory, but Logan pulled him to safety. Hendry leaped over the top rope onto both of them. His theme played as he stood with the Profits in the ring. The Profits waved their arms in the air and the fans joined in.
-Cole got in a merch plug.
-Backstage, Grayson Waller was demanding an opportunity. He said he is in the best shape of his life. He started bad-mouthing Oba. Waller said he calls him Oba-rated. Pearce pointed out he was standing behind him. Oba said he wanted a match tonight. Pearce told Waller he would now face Oba.
-Rey made his ring entrance. [c]
-The Profits sang Hendry’s song about Logan. Montez Ford told him to replace his blue shirt with a red shirt now that he’s on Raw Seth walked up to them. Ford said last week wasn’t about him, it was about them. They accused Seth of thinking he was special. Seth looked let down and frustrated.
-Cole got in another merch plug.
(3) REY MYSTERIO vs. EN GRANDE AMERICANO (w/Reyo, Bravo)
Graves plugged the Mask vs. Mask match on May 30 in Monterrey, Mexico. Cole noted this was the first ever one-on-one match between these two. Graves talked about the importance of masks in lucha libre and having it taken from you is the ultimate humiliation and it’s hard to recover from. The bell rang 29 minutes into the hour. They cut to an early break. [c]
Rey landed a 619 on El Grande and Reyo. El Grande was about to put a steel plate in his mask when El Grande “OG” Americano blocked him. Rey then hit a 619 and a Drop the Dime for the win. Afterward, Rey picked up the steel plate from the mat and tucked it into his trunks before leaving the ring.
WINNER: Rey in 8:00.
-Afterward, “OG” Americano attacked El Grande. They were pulled apart by refs and producers.
-Cole hyped Roman’s decision later as more clips aired of the backstory. Cole and Graves announced that Seth vs. Breakker and Iyo vs. Asuka were now official for Backlash.
-A vignette aired with Asuka talking about how Iyo thought she was done with her, but she’s not. She said it’s up to her to say when they’re done. She said all Sky has done is disappoint her. She said for so long, she blamed herself for her mistakes, and when she turned on her, she blamed herself, but then she finally realized she is the problem. She said she is ungrateful and selfish and her biggest failure. She said she failed her and her family. She said they’re both alone because she didn’t want another Iyo. She said she spared her until now because she thought they could be family again, but she killed that dream, so now nothing will stop her from destroying her. She said the lesson will be that she is not and never will be ready for Asuka.
-They showed Oba Femi backstage. [c]
(4) OBA FEMI vs. GRAYSON WALLER
Oba’s full ring entrance aired. Waller was already in the ring. The bell rang 48 minutes into the hour. Oba blocked a Waller kick and clotheslined him and shortly thereafter pinned him.
WINNER: Oba in 1:00.
-Oba said as of today, the Oba Femi Open Challenge will commence. He said anyone in the back who wants to prove themselves and see how they fare against him, step up. He said he will be merciless, unforgiving, and relentless. He said he will punish them, since they’ll be stepping into the ring against not an ordinary man, but Oba Femi. Graves said it’s a way to make a name for yourself, just as Oba did by stepping up to Brock Lesnar’s challenge and beating him at WrestleMania.
-Backstage, Liv Morgan was giving a pep talk to Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez. When Raquel left, Liv told Perez she wanted to finish a conversation they started earlier. She apologized for how things went down with Finn Balor while they were gone since they were close. She said she watched Finn bring her into The Judgment Day and they are family. She said Balor put himself before the family and she’d never do that. She said she’d support her and thus she’ll be in her corner as she gets one step closer to tag team gold. She asked Perez if she trusts her. Perez nodded, but didn’t seem convinced. Perez asked for a second alone. Liv agreed and said it was exciting. Finn walked up to shh’d her. Balor told her not to trust Liv or anyone in The Judgment Day. Perez asked if she should trust him. She told him get out of there before he gets hurt. Balor wished her luck and said he hopes she knows what she’s doing.
-Cole got in a plug for Club WWE.
-Lyra Valkyria and then Bayley came out to their entrance themes. [c]
[HOUR THREE]
(5) LYRA VALKYRIA & BAYLEY vs. ROXANNE PEREZ & RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ
The match began near the start of hour three. They cut to an early break. [c]
Perez hot-tagged in at 9:00. When Bayley took over, Liv stood on the ring apron. Bayley turned to her. Perez took advantage and landed a Pop Rocks for the win.
WINNERS: Perez & Morgan in 10:00.
-A video aired on Sol Ruca. Graves said she’d sign her Raw contract officially next week.
-Roman Reigns made his entrance. [c]
-Roman’s music faded after the break. Fans sang and chanted for Reigns. He said it was great to in Lorado. He said they created the World Hvt. Title to try to take away his shine, but it never worked. “The title don’t make the man, the man makes the titles,” he said. He said he put the title in the night two WrestleMania main event. “I made this title relevant. “Now you can finally be proud of this title,” he said. “Now you can respect this title. Now you can actually choose to acknowledge this title.” Fans cheered. He asked fans to acknowledge him. Fans cheered. Fatu interrupteed. Reigns said he was right on cue.
Fatu said Roman gave him a week to decide, but he didn’t need a week or a day or an hour. He said he didn’t hesitate when he told him he needs the title. He told Roman he is stuck in his main event bubble and Tribal Chief land. He said he put in 12 years of hard work and grinding and suffering, not knowing what the next meal was going to be. He said when Reigns was running The Bloodline, he was broke and worrying about his next meal and wondering if he’d ever make it to WWE. He said it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. He said now he’s standing before him. He said he, Jey, and Jimmy didn’t call him, but Solo did. “Solo gave me a chance,” he said.
Reigns interrupted and said, “Solo?” He said either Fatu is confused or dumber than he thinks. He said Solo couldn’t get a cup of coffee delivered. “Who do you think runs this place?” Reigns said. Fans chanted “OTC!” Reigns said the fans are right. He said he’s been distracted and things got hectic, but he never forgot about him and he signed off on his ass. He said Fatu is “sounding like a fool to me.” He said he doesn’t deserve it or earn it. He said allowing Fatu to compete against him is nepotism and he can’t allow it. Fatu attacked him and applied a Tongan Death Grip. Cole said he snapped and is unhinged. He vowed to take everything from him. Fans booed Fatu. Fatu dropped the belt over Reigns and left. Reigns sat up, red-faced and grabbing his throat. As Fatu walked up the aisle, Reigns said, “Jacob! Jacob! You want me at Backlash, I’ll see you at Backlash!” Scattered cheered. Fatu’s music played as Fatu said he’d see his punk ass next Monday.
