[HOUR ONE]

-Excalibur introduced the show as the camera panned the crowd.

-Tony Schiavone introduced “Hangman” Adam Page first and then Samoa Joe for a face-to-face segment. Joe came out with Powerhouse Hobbs and Katsuyori Shibata, then went to the ring alone. Excalibur noted that Hangman has never defeated Joe. Schiavone thanked them for “no physicality tonight.” He told Hangman, “The floor is yours, champ.”

Hangman said in the last six years, “I have won, I have lost, I have committed arson, I have dressed as the Stay Puff Mashmallow Man, and one time I might have been proposed to.” He said has never been as confused as he was last week when Joe lost his composure with him.” He said he volunteered to help him in a battle against the Death Riders, a group he had long ago moved on from. He said he sucker-punched him in the face. “Damn, I’m confused,” he said. He said he has realized it was over the fact the he has never defeated him. He said the AEW World Title means more than anything else “in this sport.” (Good to call it a sport, not “the industry” or “the business,” which is too jargony and meta.)

Hangman said he didn’t offer him this title match because he kicked and screamed or suckerpunched him. He said he did it because he owes him. He said Joe led The Opps in making sure his title match against Jon Moxley was a fair one, and he respects him for that and owes him for that. He said the repayment for his gratitude stops there, though. He said at WrestleDream, he has a chance to win the title, “but Joe, I will not let you take this from me.”

Joe smiled. Fans chanted, “Joe! Joe!” He said everything Hangman said “is absolutely true.” He said since they’re talking about uncomfortable truths, he has some of his own. He said his issue isn’t that Hangman is the champion. He said when he looks at him, he doesn’t see the pinnacle of pro wrestling. “I see a pretender,” he said. He said Hangman wouldn’t be champion if not for The Opps.

He said he’s surprised this hasn’t happened sooner. He said he forgot who he was. He said his prime target shouldn’t be the Death Riders, but the champion. He ripped into Hangman for his “oldest hustle in the book” to “pad your stats” with open challenges where the challenger has ten minutes to warm up. He said he provided an opportunity and he’s coming to collect on what’s owed. He said the most uncomfortable truth is Hangman is a fraud and he is going to check him.

Joe said he will torture him and then Hangman will give his best effort, and at the moment Hangman thinks he’s about to prove he’s champion, he will choke him out. He said he will wake up with the truth that he knows his place and that he has given the world “a rightful world champion.” Fans chanted “Joe! Joe!”

Hangman took issue with being called “a fraud” and “a pretender.” He said his proof of who he is comes when the bell rings. He said Joe will probably beat his ass for a while at WrestleDream, but for every shot he gives him, he will give him two back. He said he will not tap to his choke. He said every second that ticks by in the match is in his favor “because you cannot outlast me.” He said when the match is over and Joe is on his back after being beaten as fairly as possible, he hopes he can stand up and shake his hand and look him in the eye and “know that I am the champion of the world.” Taz said that was a lot of passion pouring out of both of them.

(Keller’s Analysis: So good. It felt authentic and intense. It was about going to battle and the importance to each of winning. The crowd likes both Joe and Hangman, so they seemed to be invested in the match, but not a particular outcome.)

-Alicia Atout interviewed The Conglomeration backstage. Mark Briscoe said this is a big week for them. Kyle O’Reilly said he despises anyone else named “Kyle” and if he hears a “Kyle” chant, he’ll lose it. Roderick Strong yelled, “Kyle!” He then told O’Reilly to bring the title home. Briscoe then talked about Orange Cassidy facing Pac. He then said Tomohiro Ishii will be dropping bombs on Jon Moxley. Cassidy interrupted and led the team in stacking hands. Atout joined in. O’Reilly walked like a zombie and said, “Must kill Kyle!” Cassidy awkwardly hung around a few extra seconds with Atout.

(Keller’s Analysis: The crowd is going to enjoy the Kyle-Kyle stuff as they did earlier in the year. A solid show-setting segment.)

(1) JON MOXLEY (w/Marina Shafir) vs. TOMOHIRO ISHII

Danielson said Ishii is one of the hardest hitters in pro wrestling. The bell rang 18 minutes into the hour. Danielson said Ishii has “a stoic philosophy” where he can absorb almost anything you throw at him until you knock him out. Ishii knocked Mox down. Mox rolled to ringside. After Mox returned to the ring, he distracted the ref as Shafir grabbed Ishii’s boots and then gouged his eyes. Mox then knocked him off the ring apron into the barricade at ringside. They cut to a double-box break at 3:00. [c/db]

Mox stayed in control after the break. He punched away at Ishii in the corner, but Ishii powerbombed him out of the corner and scored a two count. He scored another two count after a running lariat. They exchange strikes at 10:00. Both went down and were slow to get up. Ishii was bleeding from his nose. Fans chanted, “This is awesome!” Mox eventually applied a rear choke with a body scissors. When Ishii didn’t respond to the ref, the ref called for the bell.

WINNER: Moxley in 13:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: Makes sense to show Mox in a battle like that heading into the I Quit match at WrestleDream.)

-Renee Paquette walked up to The Young Bucks. Nicholas was banging on Tony Khan’s office door. He said he needed a money match. Paquette brought up that Jurassic Express were wrestling later. Matthew said they got two tickets to watch the match up close later. Nick said, “We can’t afford that.” Matt said he sold some of their sneakers. Nick kept pounding on TK’s door. “I need money and I need it now!” he said. [c]

-Renee narrated a vignette on Kris Statlander vs. Toni Storm, including a lot of background stats on Storm’s history in AEW followed by key stats for Statlander, too.

-Excalibur showed the angle where the Triangle of Madness attacked Storm and Statlander on Collision last weekend. He said Statlander & Storm & Harley Cameron against the Triangle of Madness on Collision this Saturday night.

(2) THE DEMAND (Ricochet & Gates of Agony) vs. THE HURT SYNDICATE (Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin & MVP)

Danielson said Hurt Syndicate didn’t like that they lost and that MVP was the one who lost to them. They went at it on the ramp as the bell rang 40 minutes into the hour. They were dressed in street clothes and hit each other with a crutch and other stuff. They cut to a break at 4:00 after Ricochet flipped off the stage onto Hurt Syndicate. [c/db]

Back from the break, Lashley charged at Tonga leaning on a table at ringside, but Kaun threw a chair at Lashley’s head to stop him. Ricochet put Lashley on a table a ringside and then Kaun leaped off the ring apron with an elbowdrop. The director had trouble knowing where to focus as the wrestlers paired off and hit spots in different places in the ring and at ringside.

Ricochet landed a shooting star press off the top rope onto Lashley on a table. The table didn’t break. MVP and Kaun leaped onto them and then table broke. That was kinda weird. Even Excalibur acknowledged he wasn’t sure what that was or who was doing what to whom. Fans chanted, “This is awesome.” (It was kinda faint and petered out quickly.) A “Bobby!” chant rang out as he went on the offense. He speared Tonga. Ricochet went after him, but Lashley speared him. Lashley and Kaun went at it, and Lashley speared Kaun. Another “Bobby!” chant. Lashley slapped Kaun through a table at ringside next.

Shelton backed Ricochet into the corner. Lashley and MVP entered and they took turns on Ricochet. Shelton delivered a released German suplex on Ricochet and scored a three count. Excalibur laughed for some reason (as he often does after big spots and finishing moves).

WINNERS: The Hurt Syndicate in 17:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: It was a weird mix of wild and hard-hitting and also methodical and dragged out. The Hurt Syndicate are so stoic, which makes them “cool” but also de-energizing.)

[HOUR TWO]

-Renee interviewed The Don Callis Family backstage. (They needed a special wide-angle lens, I think.) She asked how he can possibly strategize with so many members. He said they’re smarter and better than everyone else, so not a lot of strategizing is needed. Callis said O’Reilly “is suck a mark” for Fletcher, he named himself after him. Callis predicted Konosuke Takeshita & Kazuchika Okada would win tonight and then march to WrestleDream and win the gold.

(3) JURASSIC EXPRESS (Luchasaurus & “Jungle” Jack Perry) vs. ORION & A PARTNER

The bell rang 3 minutes into the hour. They showed that Nick and Matt Jackson were sitting the crowd with two kids between them. Taz wondered who those kids were. Perry caught a beach ball from a fan and gave it to Luchasaurus. He batted it out of the ring. Okay. Perry and Luchasaurus hit a series of rapid-fire moves against Orion. Perry finished the match with a leaping powerbomb after Luchasaurus tossed Orion to him.

WINNERS: Jurassic Express in 3:00.

-The Bucks charged to ringside and went after Perry and Luchasaurus. Luchasaurus set up a chokeslam on them, but they kicked him low. They followed with a BTE Trigger. They took Perry out with stereo superkicks. Nick then took the house mic and said, “We call this a callback!” They hit Perry in the gut with the mic. Nick challenged them to a tag match at WrestleDream. They delivered a top rope stuff piledriver on Perry.

-Pac cut a promo in the back outside, flanked by Daniel Garcia, Wheeler Yuta, Claudio Castaganli, and Marina Shafir. Yuta then said they’re going to trim the fat and separate the winners from losers. Garcia said being a winner is a choice. He said they’ll keep winning because that’s what winners do.

(4) KYLE FLETCHER vs. KYLE O’REILLY – TNT Title match

The bell rang 13 minutes into the hour. Callis joined in on commentary. They cut to a double-box break at 3:00 with Fletcher in control. [c/db]

They exchanged chops on the ring apron after the break. Fletcher kicked O’Reilly in the jaw. O’Reilly countered with a dragon screw into a chair at ringside. He followed with a running dropkick off the ring apron. “What an animal Kyle O’Reilly is!” Danielson said.

Back in the ring, Fletcher avoided a leaping double-knee drop. Fletcher took over and lawn darted O’Reilly into the middle turnbuckle. O’Reilly came back with a DDT and then a shoulder-catcher suplex for a two count at 11:00. O’Reilly kicked Fletcher in the back of the head and scored a two count. He followed with an anklelock. Fletcher escaped and landed two brainbuster suplexes for the win.

WINNER: Fletcher in 13:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: I’m impressed the crowd didn’t take over the match with silly “Let’s Go Kyle!” chants. Good battle, as you’d expect with those two. The outcome wasn’t in doubt.)

-Afterward, Archer and Rocky Romero attacked O’Reilly. Strong and Briscoe made the save. Briscoe and Fletcher then faced off. [c]

-Renee interviewed Fletcher with Callis and Archer backstage. She asked why he backed down from Briscoe. Fletcher said she was implying he was scared, but he was exhausted from a hard-fought title defense. Renee informed him that Tony Khan has booked Fletcher against Briscoe at WrestleDream for the TNT Title. Fletcher didn’t look happy.

(5) MERCEDES MONE vs. LACEY LANE – TBS Title Open Challenge

After Mercedes made her entrance, a vignette aired on Lane, a local Florida wrestler. The bell rang 35 minutes into the hour. Lacey scored a two count at 2:00. They cut to a double-box break. [c/db]

Mercedes took over, but Lane lifted her knees as Mercedes dove off the top rope at her. She connected with a thrust kick and scored a two count. Mercedes caught Lane with a knee strike and lung blower followed by a sunset bomb into the corner. She then went for double-knees, but Lane moved out of the corner. Lane then landed a springboard legdrop followed by a hammerlock flatliner for a two count.

Lane hit a signature move for a near fall at 8:00. Mercedes blocked Lane’s next move. They exchanged roll-ups for two counts. Mercedes then gave Lane her finisher for the win.

WINNER: Mercedes in 9:00 to retain the TBS Title.

(Keller’s Analysis: Lane got in a lot of offense. The crowd didn’t have an investment in her, nor did they have any reason to believe Mercedes could lose. Lane looked good, though.)

-Sammy Guevara, accompanied by The Beast Mortos, cut a backstage promo. He called himself everyone’s favorite pillar.

-Eddie Kingston and Hook then cut a promo backstage. Well, Kingston talked while Hook glared at the camera with his arms crossed. [c]

(6) KAZUCHIKA OKADA & KONOSUKE TAKESHITA vs. BRODIDO (Brody King & Bandido) – Double Jeopardy Eliminator match

The bell rang 51 minutes into the hour. They cut to a break at 3:00. [c/db]

Callis said the Don Callis Family is “too big to fail.” (Callis isn’t alone in completely getting wrong what “too big to fail” means. It doesn’t mean it can’t fail; it means it’s so big, that if it failed, the ripple effect would be devastating so it cannot be allowed to happen.)

[HOUR THREE]

The crowd popped for Takeshita powering up Brody and suplexing him. Takeshita then went after Brodido, but Brodido surprised him with a small package for a near fall at 9:00. Takeshita was setting up a closing knee strike against Bandido when Okada intervened (although the timing was off). Okada tagged himself him and hit the Rainmaker for the win. Excalibur said Okada and Takeshita have earned a tag title shot at WrestleDream.

WINNERS: Takeshita & Okada in 10:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: It should not have been difficult for Okada to tag himself in without being so late that Takeshita had to stall like that before going for his move. The action itself was good.)

-Renee interviewed Jet Speed and Willow Nightingale backstage about facing FTR & Megan Bayne on Collision on Saturday. “Speedball” Mike Bailey talked about associating with someone like Willow who stands up to bullies. Willow said when the bell rings, it’ll be three-on-three. Knight said it won’t matter if “Strokeley” is at ringside. [c]

-FTR, Stokley Hathaway, Penelope Ford, and Megan Bayne talked about the Collision match too.

-Renee interviewed Brodido backstage about their loss. She noted that Bandido wasn’t at 100 percent. Bandido conceded he wasn’t, but he didn’t want it to sound like an excuse. Brody said Bandido says they should never stop fighting. “We suffer to return harder,” he said. Brody said they are the best professional wrestling tag team walking the Earth right now and they will leave WrestleDream still tag champs.

(7) ORANGE CASSIDY vs. PAC

The bell rang 15 minutes into the match. Excalibur announced that TK had booked Jurassic Express vs. The Young Bucks in a match at WrestleDream with a $500,000 cash prize. Danielson noted Pac hasn’t wrestled for 181 days. Pac rolled to ringside at 3:00. Cassidy leaped through the ropes, but Pac caught him and landed a Falcon Arrow. They cut to a double-box break. [c/db]

Pac landed a top rope dropkick after the break. A groggy Cassidy did slo-mo chops to Pac’s chest. Pac humored him and then lowered his straps and invited a hard chop. Cassidy obliged and rocked Pac. They exchanged hard strikes mid-ring. Cassidy leaped off the top rope onto Pac on a table at ringside at 12:00. He dragged Pac back into the ring and landed a tornado DDT followed by a kip up. Danielson said Cassidy is “in the zone.” Cassidy hit the Orange Punch next for a near fall; Pac draped his foot on the bottom rope to stop the ref’s count.

Pac crawled up into the stands. Pac gave Cassidy a tombstone piledriver on the floor near fans. Darby then cuffed Pac’s ankles to the railing. Pac broke free after a few seconds and barely beat the ref’s count. Cassidy, though, immediately rolled him up for the win.

WINNER: Cassidy in 15:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: That was a strange finish. Are fans supposed to be proud of Cassidy for winning with Darby’s help?)

-Darby marched out afterward and stared down Pac. Excalibur said he had a crazed look in his eyes. When Pac charged at him, Darby sprayed him with something. Taz started coughing. Darby tossed Pac over the announce desk and then pulled out a taser. Pac fled. Mox, Claudio, and Shafir went after Darby. Darby held up a bottle and a rag and threatened to set it on fire. A security guy tackled Darby hard and then held him back as Excalibur hyped the Darby vs. Mox match at WrestleDream.
