The following is the latest in a new series of weekly in-depth articles exclusive to PWTorch which will help put in perspective major wrestling promotions with a weekly overview, looking at news and roster developments, results, future line-ups, social media activity, key interviews, plus a timely commentary at the end. We will be featuring similar features on other promotions each week and each will be updated weekly.

•Top Stories of the Week

-In what has to be one of the most talked about pro wrestling stories over the weekend, IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega was attacked by former NJPW commentator and current IMPACT Wrestling Executive Vice President Don Callis this past Friday night at a Premier Championship Wrestling event in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After speaking highly of Omega and how far he has come in the wrestling business, Callis turned a complete 180 and ripped Omega and his career apart before attacking him with a microphone. The following day on Twitter, Omega responded with one single sentence, “See you on the cruise.” Chris Jericho’s Rock ‘N’ Wrestling Rager at Sea officially gets underway on Oct. 27.

-Many top wrestling websites including PWTorch.com are reporting that talks are rumored to be underway to bring a brand new wrestling promotion to AXS TV. Being funded by the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Shahid Khan, major names linked to the new promotion in various reports include Chris Jericho, Jim Ross, “Hangman” Adam Page, Cody Rhodes, and The Young Bucks. Some of those have pushed back publicly and privately that they are involved.

-To honor the 60th anniversary of Tokyo Sports and the 20th anniversary of the passing of Giant Baba, Tokyo Sports recently announced that “Wrestling All-Star Battle” will take place at Ryogoku Sumo Hall in Tokyo, Japan on Feb. 19, 2019. The event will feature talent from New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Pro-Wrestling NOAH, All Japan Pro-Wrestling and Big Japan Pro-Wrestling.

-ROH/NJPW Global Wars Tour 2018 is set to take place next month and talent from NJPW will include Tetsuya Naito, ‘King of Darkness’ EVIL, SANADA and BUSHI of Los Ingobernables de Japon, former IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion Juice Robinson and former IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion KUSHIDA. The four city tour begins in Lewiston, Maine on November 7th and will end in Toronto, Ontario on Nov. 11.

-After six nights of this year’s Road to Power Struggle: Super Jr. Tag League, here are your current standings:

  • Shingo Takagi & BUSHI | Points: 6 Wins: 3 Losses: 1
  • SHO & YOH | Points: 6 Wins: 3 Losses: 1

-Tomohiro Ishii will defend Revolution Pro Wrestling’s British Heavyweight Championship against former champion Minoru Suzuki at NJPW Power Struggle: Super Jr. Tag League 2018 coming up on Nov. 3 in Osaka, Japan. Ishii defeated Suzuki for the title on Oct. 14 at RevPro’s “Global Wars UK” event.

-Lanny Poffo recently announced on “The Genius Cast” that he will be heading to Japan this week to audition for a commentary role with NJPW. On top of his frisbee throwing abilities, being behind the microphone was always one of Poffo’s greatest talents.

-Wrestle Kingdom 13 tickets officially go on sale to fans in North America this coming Thursday! If you’re looking to attend the event live in Tokyo on Jan. 4, 2019, tickets start at about $45 US. You can check out NJPW1972.com for more details.

•Closing Commentary

Don “By Gawd” Callis.

The internet was a buzz this past weekend over the vicious attack, both verbally and physically by Don Callis on current IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega at the PCW show in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. With Chris Jericho’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling Rager attacking the water this coming weekend, what better way to hype up the event than an angle between one of the best on the mic and one of the best to ever step foot inside of a wrestling ring.

With all the buzz surrounding the futures of Omega and The Young Bucks, it’ll be interesting to see Matt & Nick Jackson align themselves with Chris Jericho this coming weekend when Alpha Club takes on the Bullet Club’s Cody, Marty Scurll, and Omega. Will we see Callis play a role in the match? Will we see both him and Jericho have the worst Superkick Party in the world?

Maybe we see Jericho play up the fact that he’s unaware of what Callis did to Omega as he’s yet to comment about the incident on social media which a rarity for Jericho. Any way you look at it though, Callis proved he’s got so much more to offer the world of wrestling than just a guy doing color commentary every Thursday night. Because of the angle in Winnipeg, I went from possibly ordering the event to now looking forward to seeing Callis get his ass handed to him when “Streaming For Vengeance” airs on FITE on Nov. 3.

If that wasn’t big enough news for the week, the rumour of a new wrestling promotion launching on AXS TV being funded by Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan and backed by wrestling legend Jim Ross and the main guys behind ALL IN, including Chris Jericho, has potentially started a very HUGE tsunami!

You go from whether the guys will re-sign with NJPW to when they’ll show up in the WWE to now a completely different scenario where not only they would be competition to the WWE but to NJPW as well… Kinda reminds me of this thing that happened in the late 1980’s when this Ted Turner guy wanted to get into the business. No offence to Ted Turner but when it comes to AXS TV, Mark Cuban, Shahid Khan and Khan’s estimated net worth of 6.9 billion in 2018, every major wrestling promotion out there including NJPW will be on edge if the rumour becomes a reality.

Finally, my thoughts and prayers are with Roman Reigns right now. I watched WWE Monday Night Raw last night and as a wrestling fan for the past 39 years, I “may have” gotten choked up during the opening segment. Reigns is 33 years old and about to battle leukemia for the second time in his life. The Big Dog is potentially in for the biggest fight of his life and whether you love to cheer him or boo him, believe in Joseph Anoa’i.

#ThankYouRoman
