[HOUR ONE]

-The camera panned the crowd as Kevin Patrick introduced the show. He called it the season premiere.

-John Cena’s music played and he made his entrance. After Cena entered the ring, they showed highlights of the match with Cena and L.A. Knight against Solo Sikoa and Jimmy Uso this past Saturday at Fastlane. Corey Graves called it a massive win for Cena and Knight. After the video, Cena stood in the center of the ring and the crowd chanted his name. Cena said it was a big night. He then welcomed the crowd to the season premiere of Smackdown.

-Roman Reigns’ music played and cut Cena off. Fans in the crowd raised one finger to the air to greet their Tribal Chief. Reigns appeared on the stage with Paul Heyman and Solo Sikoa. Reigns posed at the top of the ramp with Heyman and Sikoa as pyro exploded behind them. Michael Cole touted Reigns’ long championship reign and said he has returned to Smackdown. Reigns posed again on the apron as fans took pictures. Reigns, Heyman, and Sikoa entered the ring and stood opposite of Cena. Reigns stared Cena down. Cena looked to the crowd as they chanted his name.

-Heyman handed Reigns a mic and celebrated when Reigns took it from him. Reigns addressed Cena and said if he’s going to open his show, he needs to do it the right way. Reigns turned to the crowd and asked them to acknowledge him. He was met with a loud mixed reaction. The crowd chanted for Cena again. Reigns said the crowd will chant for a coward. He said Cena only showed up because Reigns took his leave. Reigns said Cena had the audacity to ask people to call him the greatest of all time. Reigns said Cena already knows who the GOAT is and it’s Roman Reigns. Reigns said they have handled this before, so they won’t do it again. He told Cena to leave, or they will make him leave. The crowd chanted for Cena again.

-Cena said there’s a lot of energy and anticipation for what’s about to happen. He said WWE is unpredictable, and with Cena and Reigns in the same ring, who knows what’s next. Cena said he’s going to throw a curveball. He said he’s not here to challenge Reigns, but to acknowledge him. Cena mentioned Reigns’ days as champion and said it’s the greatest accomplishment of all time. Cena said it was earned, and he’s not going to challenge Reigns because he hasn’t earned it. Cena said he knows someone who has.

-L.A. Knight’s music played and he made his entrance. Knight posed on the ropes in the corner as Reigns looked on. Knight walked past Reigns and Cena and posed on the opposite corner. Reigns continued to watch. Cena turned to Knight and said it was his time. Cena handed Knight the mic. The crowd chanted for Knight. Knight looked around at the crowd as they cheered. Reigns pointed and asked the crowd why. Knight asked the crowd if he could talk to them. Knight looked at Reigns and asked if Reigns is pissing his pants yet. Knight asked if Reigns was Tribal Chief and defending champion, right? Knight said no, no, because Reigns is a man standing in his way. Knight said that while Reigns has been at home for a month and half, things have changed a bit. Knight said it’s his game now.

-Reigns said he gave Knight a couple months and the crowd says his name now. Reigns said he has done things Knight could never imagine. Reigns asked why Knight thought he could be in the ring with him. Knight removed his glasses. He said that talking like that is a good way to get yourself referred to in the past tense. Knight called himself the fastest rising star in Smackdown history. Jimmy Uso attacked Knight from behind. Knight recovered and tossed Jimmy to the outside. Knight talked trash to Reigns. Reigns turned and exited the ring with Sikoa and Heyman. They paused outside the ring. Reigns turned to Sikoa and told him to forget about Cena and focus on Knight. Sikoa jumped on the apron and talked to Knight. Sikoa jumped off the apron. Knight said that Sikoa challenged him to a match later tonight. Knight said he’s going to use Sikoa like a mop. Knight stood tall in the ring as Reigns, Sikoa, and Heyman stood on the ramp.

-The announcers ran down tonight’s card. They hyped a match with Pretty Deadly against the Brawling Brutes, an appearance by Triple H, and an Undisputed Tag Team title defense by Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso. [c]

(McDonald’s Analysis: Interesting segment. I was hoping we would get more than that from Reigns after the long absence. I assume we’ll see more as the show goes on, but I wanted to hear him talk about Jimmy Uso and everything going on with the Bloodline. Yet again, they set up another match for free TV that should be saved for a PLE down the road. I fully expect there to not be a finish, so I guess it’s fine, but it’s still not the best idea. After this segment though, it appears the rumors are true and Knight will be Reigns’ opponent in Saudi Arabia. I know quite a few people have talked about Knight getting the shot at Royal Rumble, but I actually think this makes more sense.)

-Spotlights shined around the arena. A voiceover played talking about Elton Prince’s recovery. A spotlight shined on Pretty Deadly on the stage. Prince was in a wheelchair as Kit Wilson held up an Elton Strong shirt. Prince leapt out of the wheelchair and they made their entrance.

-The Brawling Brutes made their entrance. Graves said Pretty Deadly is in to grooming and Butch looks sticky to the touch.

(1) PRETTY DEADLY (Kit Wilson & Elton Prince) vs. BRAWLING BRUTES (Butch & Ridge Holland)

Prince started with Butch. They locked up and Burch went to the arm of Prince. Butch stomped on Prince’s arm and Prince cried out in pain. Wilson and Holland tagged in. Holland sent Wilson to the corner and splashed him before he tagged in Butch. Butch stayed on the attack. Wilson reversed a whip but Butch kicked Prince off the apron. Butch stomped on Wilson’s hands then kicked him. Wilson rolled to the outside and Butch came over the top rope with a dive. Holland hit Ten Beats on Prince on the apron as Butch hit his own on Wilson on the announce table. The Brutes celebrated as they cut to break. [c]

Wilson beat on Butch as they came back from break. Butch got to his feet and chopped Wilson. Prince tagged in and took Butch down. Prince mounted Butch and punched away at him. Cole said Pretty Deadly are wearing super crop tops. Prince kicked away at Butch in the corner. Prince set up Butch and went for Ten Beats but Butch blocked and went to the fingers of Prince. Butch pulled at Prince’s fingers and Prince sold. Wilson tagged in and went after Butch. Butch fought back against the double team. Butch tried to knock Wilson off the apron but Prince saved him and he pulled Wilson up as they screamed “Elton Strong”. Butch was able to recover and tag in Holland. Holland took out Prince and Wilson with power moves. Holland slammed Prince with a Press Slam and made the cover. Wilson made the save. Wilson slammed Butch on the apron. Holland slammed Prince. Prince sold his knee and the ref checked on him. Holland screamed at the ref not to fall for it. Wilson checked on Prince and talked to the ref. Prince said he would be fine but the ref stopped him from getting up. Holland looked on. Wilson landed a kick to Holland and Prince recovered long enough to roll Holland up for the win.

WINNER: Pretty Deadly in 10:00

-Pretty Deadly ran up the ramp and Prince jumped into the wheelchair. Wilson wheeled Prince around on the stage as they celebrated.

(McDonald’s Analysis: Pretty Deadly is awesome. I really liked everything they did here. The spot on the apron where Prince saved Wilson from falling was brilliant. Really good stuff. The finish was different than what we’ve seen recently and that’s a good thing for the most part. I want to see WWE put an emphasis on the Tag Team Division with real teams. Pretty Deadly could be a huge part of that. Yes boy, they can.)

-They showed a recap of the match with the L.W.O. against the Street Profits and Bobby Lashley at Fastlane. The video highlighted the return of Carlito. After the video, Carlito was in the back with Kayla Braxton. Carlito said the only way to describe his return is cool. Lashley appeared. He said Carlito’s return was amazing and masterful. Lashley said the last time he saw Carlito, he was beating him up on Smackdown, but it was a long time ago. Carlito said it was a long time ago. Carlito challenged Lashley to a match. Lashley stalled before the Street Profits attacked Carlito from behind with chairs. Pearce appeared and broke it up. Pearce called for help and the Profits walked off with Lashley. [c]

-Pearce checked on Carlito with the L.W.O. Bayley appeared and complained. Zelina Vega got in Bayley’s face and said they had bigger things to worry about. Bayley and Vega argued back and forth. Pearce got up and yelled at them. He made a match between the two.

-The Bloodline was in the back. Reigns turned to Jimmy and asked what Jimmy was doing. Jimmy said he’s trying to be Reigns. He said if the play doesn’t look right, it’s because he’s calling audibles. Reigns asked Jimmy if he was the quarterback. Jimmy said he’s the back-up. Reigns asked Jimmy what he would do if he was the quarterback. Jimmy said he would get Jey. Reigns said that Jey is old news. He said they need the Tag Team titles. Reigns said it’s a slap in the face that Jey is running around with the titles, and with Cody Rhodes. Reigns asked Jimmy if he could handle it. Jimmy said “yeet” and Reigns said he didn’t like that.

(McDonald’s Analysis: This is what I wanted. Jimmy gave a reasonable explanation. He didn’t say why he wanted back in all of a sudden, but this was fine for what it was. I can’t tell if Jimmy wants to “get” Jey as in beat him up, or “get” him as in bring him back to the Bloodline. Both might work for the context and Reigns’ answer seems to lean toward the former rather than the latter. Obviously, it’s hard to tell if Jimmy feels the same way and that might be by design. I like the idea of Rhodes and Jey against Sikoa and Jimmy so I really hope we go in that direction at some point. Beyond all that, I like that Reigns basically laughed off Jimmy. Obviously, eventually, Reigns is going to put Jimmy in his place, but tonight isn’t the night for that.)

-Bayley made her entrance with Iyo Sky and Dakota Kai in tow. [c]

-They showed a replay of the Women’s Championship Triple Threat match from Fastlane. The video highlighted Bayley’s interference in the match and Sky retaining the title.

-Zelina Vega made her entrance.

(2) BAYLEY (w/ Iyo Sky & Dakota Kai) vs. ZELINA VEGA

Vega kicked at Bayley and took control. Bayley blocked a kick and went for a slam but Vega fought her off. Vega tossed Bayley into the corner then took her down with an arm drag. Vega followed up with another arm drag and celebrated as the crowd cheered her on. Vega hit a couple of punches then went for a hurricanrana but Bayley blocked. Bayley clotheslined Vega to the mat. Bayley followed up with an elbow drop and covered Vega for a two count. Kai cheered on Bayley from ringside. Bayley went for a belly to belly and Vega escaped. Vega set up for a 619 and hit it on the bottom rope. Graves called it the 3.5, 4.5. Vega came off the top rope with a Meteora and made the cover for a two count. Vega knocked Sky off the apron and Bayley took out Vega off the distraction. Bayley hit the Rose Plant and made the cover for the win.

WINNER: Bayley in 3:00

-Sky hit the ring and attacked Vega with Bayley. Charlotte Flair ran down to the ring and chased Damage Ctrl off. Charlotte helped Vega to her feet and stared at Damage Ctrl from the ring.

(McDonald’s Analysis: Not good. Super sloppy and Bayley did her best, but she couldn’t bring Vega up a level. Good thing it was short. Time filler and nothing more. Charlotte remains involved with Damage Ctrl for whatever reason. I have no idea where any of this is going and, unfortunately, I don’t think WWE does either.)

-They showed a graphic for Triple H’s appearance as the announcers hyped it. [c]

-They showed a graphic for Royal Rumble and announced that tickets go on sale next week.

-Triple H made his entrance using his King of Kings theme. The crowd cheered when he appeared on the stage. Triple H slapped hands with fans on his way to the ring. He paused on the steps and pointed out at the crowd. Adam Pearce was in the ring waiting for Triple H. Triple H stood in the center of the ring and the crowd chanted his name. He said part of him misses that. Triple H said it’s electric in the arena. He said it’s October and they came out of a successful Fastlane and Crown Jewel and Survivor Series are coming up. He said it starts here with the season premiere of Smackdown.

[HOUR TWO]

-Triple H said he came out here to draw attention to one of the unsung heroes of WWE. He said Pearce doesn’t know why he’s out here. Triple H said Pearce had a successful in ring career and since then, he’s done a good job managing both shows over the past three years. Triple H thanked Pearce for the job he’s done. They shook hands. He said that no one should have to do that job alone. He said that he won’t be alone and Pearce is going to get a promotion. Triple H named Pearce the General Manager of Monday Night Raw. Triple H said he needs to name a General Manager for Smackdown.

-Dominik Mysterio made his entrance. Graves asked if he was going to be GM. Dominik said Fastlane wasn’t a tremendous success. The crowd booed loudly. Dominik said Judgment Day got screwed out of the Tag Team titles. Dominik entered the ring. Triple H cut Dominik off and said he couldn’t hear him over the crowd. Triple H asked the crowd to keep it down. They booed louder. Dominik tried to talk again and they booed even louder. He said that Jey and Rhodes are defending Judgment Day’s titles tonight when Judgment Day has a title match on Monday. Dominik asked why Triple H would allow Pearce to do it. Triple H said he always thought the noise was piped in and he didn’t know how loud it was when Dominik was out there. Triple H repeated what Dominik said. He said Dominik is yelling at the wrong people. Triple H said Pearce is the GM of Raw. Triple H introduced the GM of Smackdown, Nick Aldis.

-Aldis entered the ring and thanked WWE for the opportunity. He called Smackdown the number one brand in sports entertainment today. He shook Pearce’s hand and said he’s looking forward to healthy competition. Aldis shook Dominik’s hand and said he’s a big fan, of Dominik’s dad. Aldis said that Rhodes was instrumental in a deal that sent Jey Uso to Raw, so now Smackdown needs a new Superstar. Aldis said he’s going to introduce them now. Dominik interjected and said no one cares. Dominik asked what Aldis’ name was. He said Jey and Rhodes are the problem and now Aldis has to deal with him. Dominik said he doesn’t care who Smackdown’s newest star is, he will smack him and make him respect Dominik.

-Kevin Owens made his entrance. Owens entered the ring and hit Dominik with a Stunner. Owens looked at Aldis as the crowd chanted Owens’ name. He shook hands with Aldis and then rose Aldis’ arm. Owens shook hands with Triple H and Pearce. He yelled after Dominik and said Dominik didn’t slap him.

(McDonald’s Analysis: I don’t know if I speak for everyone, and I probably don’t, but that was super disappointing. I’m significantly more excited about Nick Aldis than I am about Kevin Owens. I don’t see anything for Owens to do in the immediate future on this show. On top of that, anything and everything with him and Reigns is so played out and tired at this point. I just have no idea what you do with Owens on Smackdown. I would have much preferred he stayed on Raw and feuded with a heel Drew McIntyre or something. This just feels like a re-run I’ve seen one too many times.)

-The Bloodline was in the back. Reigns said Owens is on his show now. He said Rhodes and Jey are running around his show. Reigns said Jimmy is on his couch. He turned to Jimmy and said he just called the play and Jimmy is sitting on his couch drinking his water. Jimmy asked if Reigns was serious. Reigns said he wasn’t, but imagine if he was. Jimmy said he’s going to go run the play. Jimmy started to walk in front of Reigns but Reigns glared at him. Jimmy yelled “hot route” as he climbed over the couch to go the other way. Jimmy said he’s going to go run the play. He yelled for Sikoa to come with him. Reigns yelled after Jimmy to stop doing that. [c]

(McDonald’s Analysis: Another good segment and another good step in the right direction of explaining everything going on and the dynamic between Jimmy and Reigns. The moment where Jimmy had to call the “hot route” was funny and good stuff. Again, I don’t know what Jimmy is going to do, but it will be interesting to see how Reigns reacts regardless of what it is.)

-Aldis was in the back with Chelsea Green and Piper Niven. Green said she heard the Women’s Tag Team titles are cursed. Green proposed new titles. Charlotte appeared and Aldis said he has another meeting. Green said it was a terrible first impression and walked off with Niven. Aldis said he saw what happened to Charlotte at Fastlane and said she can have a Women’s title match with Sky next week. Charlotte turned to walk away but she walked into Triple H and Jade Cargill. Triple H started to introduce them, but Charlotte said she knew who Cargill was. They stared each other down before Charlotte walked off.

-Jey Uso made his entrance.

-Cody Rhodes made his entrance. They showed a graphic for Rhodes and Jey against Austin Theory and Grayson Waller. Patrick hyped the match for after the break. [c]

-Rhodes and Jey stood in the ring and waited for their opponents. A video recap of the Tag Team title match at Fastlane aired. The video highlighted the miscommunication by Judgment Day and the subsequent win for Rhodes and Jey.

-Grayson Waller made his entrance and paused at the top of the stage. Austin Theory’s music played and he made his entrance to join Waller. Theory posed under the spotlight and Waller appeared behind him. Graves called this the season premiere of Austin Theory Live.

-Patrick threw to some social media posts from Cody Rhodes where he issues an open challenge for the Tag Team titles. They then showed a video of Theory and Waller accepting the challenge.

(3) JEY USO & CODY RHODES (c) vs. A-TOWN DOWN UNDER (Austin Theory & Grayson Waller) – Undisputed Tag Team Championship Match

Waller started against Rhodes. Waller went for a punch but Rhodes blocked it and took Waller down. Rhodes hit a knee to Waller’s gut and took him down. Waller frecovered and tagged in Theory. Rhodes took down Theory with a leg whip and went for a Figure Four. Theory escaped and got to his feet. Waller tagged in. Waller and Rhodes locked up, but Rhodes took control and tagged in Jey. Waller went for a headbutt and Jey no sold it. Graves said Waller didn’t know the rules about headbutting a Samoan. Theory tagged back in. Theory took a punch from Jey but recovered and sent Jey to the floor on the outside. Theory posed on the apron as they cut to break. [c]

Back from break, Theory had Jey in a headlock. Jey fought to his feet and punched at Theory’s gut. Theory threw Jey down. Theory pulled Jey to the corner and stomped away at him. The ref pulled Theory away and Waller attacked Jey. Theory taunted Jey then lifted him to his feet in the corner. Theory went for a punch but Jey blocked it and fought back. Jey tried to fight out of the corner but Theory cut him off. Theory hit a backbreaker on Jey and held him in place. Waller came off the top rope with a knee after a tag and made the cover for a two count. Waller lifted Jey to his feet but Jey recovered and delivered a kick. Both men were down and started to crawl toward their corners. Rhodes and Theory tagged in. Rhodes took Theory down a pair of times then hit him with a snap powerslam. Rhodes landed a Disaster Kick on Theory then tossed Waller to the outside. Waller tried to get back in but Rhodes took him down with a kick. Theory hit Rhodes in the throat and delivered a DDT. Theory made the cover but Jey broke it up. Jey superkicked Waller off the apron. Jey hit a superkick to Theory and then they hit the Cody One-D on Theory. Jey took out Waller and Rhodes hit Cross Rhodes on Theory for the win.

WINNER: Cody Rhodes & Jey Uso in 9:00 to retain the Undisputed Tag Team Championships

-Jey and Rhodes exited the ring and started up the ramp. Roman Reigns’ music played and Jey stopped in his tracks. Jimmy and Sikoa appeared and stared down Jey and Rhodes. Jimmy looked between the two of them and then looked to Sikoa. Reigns and Heyman appeared behind Sikoa and Jimmy. Reigns stepped up to Rhodes and they stared each other down. Aldis appeared and told them not tonight. [c]

(McDonald’s Analysis: Big spot for Waller and Theory and they delivered in a lot of ways with the limited TV time this match got. It was another time filler and another way to make the season premiere feel bigger with some star power, but it worked for what it was. I don’t know if we should read too much into it, but it’s interesting that Theory did the job rather than Waller. Anyway, the real story was the aftermath and the face-off with Jimmy and Sikoa against Rhodes and Jey. I’m kidding, they also teased what many expect will be the main event of Wrestlemania with the staredown between Reigns and Rhodes. Regardless of what you think of either guy, they feel like they have a rivalry, it doesn’t feel played out, and it feels like a big deal. All of those are positives for WWE.)

-They previewed next week’s show with graphics. Patrick hyped a match between Sky and Charlotte for the Women’s Championship. Graves then announced Santos Escobar against Montez Ford as the L.W.O. seeks revenge. Cole said they’re in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas next week.

-Solo Sikoa was in the ring.

-L.A. Knight made his entrance. Graves said that Knight has a tall task tonight against Sikoa.

(4) SOLO SIKOA vs. L.A. KNIGHT

The bell rang forty-three minutes into the hour. They locked up and Sikoa backed Knight into the corner. Sikoa went for a punch but Knight ducked and landed punches of his own. Sikoa recovered and threw Knight into the other corner. Knight fought back with punches but Sikoa threw Knight down. Sikoa set up a suplex but Knight landed on his feet and took Sikoa down with a neckbreaker. Knight ran the ropes but Sikoa took him down with a clothesline. Sikoa went for a slam but Knight landed on his feet. Knight went for a slam of his own but Sikoa cut it off. Sikoa chopped Knight in the corner but Knight fought back with low dropkicks. Knight knocked Sikoa to the outside and Knight kicked Sikoa through the ropes and landed on his feet. Knight slammed Sikoa into the barricade then tossed him back into the ring. Knight climbed to the apron and went for a suplex but Sikoa cut him off and hit Knight with a right hand. Sikoa tossed Knight into the ring post and Knight went down hard on the floor on the outside. [c]

Sikoa had Knight in a nerve hold but Knight fought to his feet. Knight lifted Sikoa but Sikoa landed an elbow that took Knight down. Sikoa made the cover for a two count. Sikoa landed a belly to belly suplex and made another cover for another two count. Cole touted the impact Sikoa has made during his short time in WWE. Sikoa charged Knight in the corner and hit the running butt bump to the face of Knight. Sikoa punched away at Knight in the corner. Sikoa landed a series of headbutts. Sikoa went back to the nerve hold on Knight. Sikoa landed a Samoan Drop and covered Knight for yet another two count. Sikoa stood over Knight and Knight tried to get to his feet. Sikoa lifted him and shot him off the ropes. Knight went for a sunset flip and Sikoa tried to drop on Knight. Knight moved out of the way and Sikoa hit the mat. Knight went to the corner and Sikoa charged. Knight moved and Sikoa hit the top turnbuckle face first. Knight went to the other corner and Sikoa charged again. Knight moved again but this time Sikoa hit the ring post. Knight landed a series of right hands and rocked Sikoa. Knight ran the ropes and took Sikoa down with a flying clothesline. Knight followed up with a DDT then stomped away at Sikoa in the corner. Knight charged and hit a running knee on Sikoa in the corner. Knight charged again but Sikoa caught him coming in and lifted Knight to his shoulders. Knight got free and hit a powerslam followed by his signature elbow drop. Knight measured Sikoa and went for a BFT but Sikoa shoved Knight off. Both men came off the ropes and collided with stereo clotheslines. Both men were down. Jimmy Uso hit the ring but Cena greeted him with an AA. Sikoa took out Cena with a Samoan Spike. Knight hit Sikoa with a BFT and covered him for the win.

WINNER: L.A. Knight in 13:00

-Roman Reigns hit the ring and took Knight down with a spear. Reigns stood over Knight and raised a finger to the sky. Reigns stood over Knight and held the Undisputed WWE title over him. Reigns lifted the title to the air and posed as the show went off the air.

(McDonald’s Analysis: Well, I think they’re going with Knight. At least in the short term. It’s worth noting that the only person who has defeated Solo Sikoa in a one on one match is Cody Rhodes. Beyond that, Sikoa took a pin in a tag match, by Sami Zayn. Knight has added his name to that list. I don’t necessarily agree with the decision, but it shows they have some faith in this guy. They very easily could have had a non-finish here and they chose not to go that route. I think it matters. It may seem small, but it may be a signal that they’re serious about Knight. Again, at least right now. This match was really solid and both guys did a good job and worked well together. I was waiting for the missed move by Knight, but it never came. The announce team did a great job putting over both guys and framing why this match was important for both of them for different reasons. I really liked this. The end affirms most of what we saw at the beginning of the show. It definitely looks like we’re headed to Reigns and Knight at Crown Jewel. I don’t know how that will go over and what it will do for Knight moving forward, but it will certainly be interesting. Is Knight going to fall down the card drastically after losing to Reigns? Or does it become clear his time is coming, just not at the expense of Reigns? They did a really good job on this show and it actually felt more noteworthy than the PLE they just put on last Saturday. It feels like WWE is so hot right now, they can do no wrong. That’s evident when they mention how successful Fastlane was with a lackluster build and a very average show. They rebounded nicely tonight and showed everyone why they’re so hot right now. While other bookers are tweeting and looking for answers, Triple H is finding them and delivering a good product. Good show.)
