[HOUR ONE]
-Michael Cole introduced the show as they showed scenes of Perth, Australia. He said it was the final night of a big weekend. Then he threw to a lengthy four minute video recap of Crown Jewel including some corporate sports headlines reacting to the big happenings.
-They showed the arrivals of C.M. Punk and L.A. Knight, then Jey Uso signing photos backstage, and Rhea Ripley walking backstage.
-They cut to a wide shot of the arena as Cole said 13,737 were in attendance.
-Seth Rollins’s music played and he made his entrance, accompanied by Bronson Reed, Bron Breakker, and Paul Heyman. Seth said, “This is my Vision and, while tonight is about me, I want to acknowledge the greatness that is standing before me in this ring, the greatness that I have assembled.” He turned first to Paul Heyman who was teared up. When he introduced him, fans said Heyman’s name and cheered a bit. He said he was betrayed by the Tribal Chief and he came to him in a moment of need. “I took you in, and with my vision, together we have solidified you as the undisputed GOAT. Heyman bowed his head toward Seth. “Sir, I am blessed man for being in your presence,” Seth said. Heyman and Seth hugged. Heyman kissed Seth’s cheek. Fans chanted, “Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” Seth paused and then kissed Heyman’s forehead. Fans popped. “Ain’t no shame, baby. Ain’t no shame in that!” Seth said. Fans cheered.
Seth turned to Breakker. Fans barked. Seth asked Breakker to do his signature head jerk. They laughed. Breakker did it. Fans popped. Seth said Breakker flourished and “became everything I thought you could be.” He said he is “the undisputed future of this industry.” He turned to Reed. Fans said his name along with Seth and cheered. Fans sang “Bronson, Bronson Reed!” Seth said he couldn’t have beat Roman Reigns six months ago, but he passed along all his knowledge that he had about Reigns. “Not only did you beat Roman Reigns, you destroyed Roman Reigns, you embarrassed Roman Reigns. You are the new Tribal Chief!” he said. Reed threw his hand up.
Fans chanted, “C.M. Punk!” Seth said he had two questions for Perth. He said he knows they aren’t very smart, but he’s going to ask them anyway. He asked who was the greatest World Champion of all time “and why is it me?” He said Reigns likes to talk about there being “levels.” He said what’s special about him is that he didn’t need anyone to achieve what he has. Fans chanted, “Bullshit! Bullshit!” Seth said he is going to spit some straight fact at you. He said Reigns needed The Shield and The Bloodline. He said Cody Rhodes needed him to beat Reigns. He said he doesn’t need Reed, Breaker, or Heyman. He said he beat Punk and Reigns at WrestleMania on his own and he “trounced” Cody “with one good arm, on my own.” He said he doesn’t need anybody. He said he has chosen the men in the ring “and they have chosen me because I am a visionary, I am a revolutionary, and I am the greatest to ever do it. I am Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins!” He held the mic up and the crowd joined in saying his name.
(Keller’s Analysis: That whole segment went about 14 minutes. It was, as often is the case with Seth, a mixed bag. I wanted to watch it on 1.5 speed because he stretches out everything he says with a slow cadence and pauses between phrases. Second, he needlessly broke character like this was some sort of out-of-storyline side event, playing into the crowd wanting him to kiss Heyman. His song and his catch phrases continue to undo some of the heel heat he builds up with the stronger aspects of his promo. The strength and more intriguing aspect of his promo was how much he made it about himself and bragged up himself as the leader of The Vision. I don’t recall him leaning into it to that degree. I mean, he was basically flaunting in the faces of Heyman, Breakker, and Reed that he is superior to them and they’re fortunate to have him in their presence. I don’t know what their end game is, but it’s hard to imagine we’re supposed to think that Heyman, Breakker, and Reed don’t have inner thoughts of resentment toward Seth and his self-centered bragging. And I also hope everyone involved realizes how Seth is coming across.)
-They went to Cole and Wade Barrett at ringside. They reacted to Seth’s speech, and then shifted to a recap of the set-up for the Dominik Mysterio vs. Penta match.
-They cut to Penta backstage. He crossed paths with Rusev. Rusev said he already beat Penta and he said Dom cheated him out of his title, yet Penta gets a title match. He said he is allowing it only because he already talked to Raw G.M. Adam Pearce and he promised him the winner. He said he hasn’t forgotten about the kick last week. “So I have one piece of advice, he said. “Pray.” Dom was in the background, and when he saw Rusev, he slowly backtracked. “Smart move, Dom,” said Cole. [c]
(1) DOMINIK MYSTERIO vs. PENTA – Intercontinental Title match
Dom’s ring entrance took place followed by formal ring introductions. Fans sang, “Dirty, Dirty Dom!” The bell rang 28 minutes into the hour. They exchanged wild swings early mid-ring. Penta connected with a boot to Dom’s chin. Dom fire back with his own kick. Penta sent Dom to ringside, dove at him, and then backdropped him onto the announce desk. He played to the crowd as they cut to a ridiculously early break at 1:00. [c/db]
Penta hit a flurry of offense after the break. Dom made a comeback and dove through the ropes and landed a tornado DDT at ringside. Fans sang “Dirty! Dirty Dom!” again. Cole said he had to admit Dom was getting better every week. Dom mocked Penta’s strut and then threw him into the barricade and almost in the lap of a little girl. He then shifted to throwing Penta into the time keeper’s area. (Did he intend to almost throw Penta into the little girl of did Penta leap more than Dom expected and was supposed to crash into the side?) Penta returned to the ring to avoid a countout. Penta also beat the count at nine. Dom landed a dropkick into the corner and scored a two count. With Dom in control, they cut to another break. [c]
Penta made a comeback right after the break with a tilt-a-while backbreaker. He then leaped off the top rope onto Dom at ringside. Fans chanted, “This is awesome!” Penta landed two unreleased vertical suplexes. Fans booed because it was Dom’s sequence, apparently. Dom blocked the third suplex and landed his own suplex for a two count. (How was one suplex worthy of a near fall?) Fans chanted, “Eddie! Eddie!” The crowd popped when Dom set up the 619. Penta ducked and then high-kicked Dom. He followed with a top rope crossbody and a Penta Driver for a near fall at 14:00.
A minute later, when Dom leaped off the top rope, Penta kicked him out of mid-air and scored a near fall. Barret said both men are so tired and beaten down, they couldn’t capitalize on their momentum. Rusev walked to ringside. Penta then landed a running flip dive onto Rusev (contradicting Barrett’s assertion seconds earlier that Penta was too tired to capitalize on his momentum.) Dom, meanwhile, grabbed a bell hammer from the ringside. He slid his title belt into the ring. As the ref threw it out of the ring, Dom hit Penta in the knee with the bell hammer. Penta fell into position for the 619. Dom hit the 619 and then landed a top rope frog splash for the win. Fans counted along and popped. Dom dropped to ringside and threw the hammer back to the time keeper’s area and then grabbed his belt to leave. Barrett defended the creativity and inventiveness of Dom’s strategy. Cole said it was “very Eddie Guerrero-like.” Barrett said Dom is playing chess while everyone is playing checkers.
WINNER: Dominik in 16:00 to retain the IC Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: I wouldn’t want to be a babyface wrestling Dom at this point. Dom is charismatic and fun to watch, using strategies and signature moves of the beloved Eddie Guerrero, plus you have the announcers to one degree or another endorsing and celebrating his cheating. Of course fans are going to cheer him.)
-Jackie Redmond interviewed L.A. Knight backstage about facing Jey Uso and Punk in a Triple Threat to become no. 1 contender. She asked how much confidence he can take from his win in a tag match last week. Knight said Punk might get himself pinned just like Jey did last week. He said he’s going to win tonight and then face Seth and beat him. Punk interrupted and told Knight he won’t pin him and won’t become World Champion. Punk said he stole the win last week. Knight said he needs to accept that he is what is and he can’t do anything about it.
-Elsewhere backstage, Kairi Sane was sitting and looking distressed. Asuka stormed up to her and shamed her for losing. Kairi cried and said she was so sorry. She said she can fix it and maybe talk to Iyo. Asuka said tonight Iyo faces Ripley. She said she’s going to remind everyone that she is in charge. Kairi whimpered that she tried to help her. Kairi slapped her. Fans “oooh’d.”
-Ripley’s entrance took place. She was accompanied by Iyo Sky. [c]
-Scenes aired of scuba diving on the Australian Coral Coast. Then they showed an aerial view of the city.
-They showed Alexander Volkanovski and Jack Della Maddalena from MAGA-FC and plugged an upcoming event.
(2) RHEA RIPLEY (w/Iyo Sky) vs. KAIRI SANE (w/Asuka)
The bell rang 55 minutes into the hour. Kairi slapped Ripley. Cole said Kairi is scared to death to lose to Rhea. Barrett said, “Some people respond well to that.” Barrett said Asuka scared her, noting the look she gave him at ringside. When Kairi rallied, Barrett said Asuka’s approach was working. Cole said Kairi just wanted to survive. When Ripley rallied at 3:00, Asuka leaped onto the ring apron. When Rhea moved toward her, Asuka jumped off the apron to the floor. Cole said that was like a typical bully. When Rhea pursued Asuka at ringside, Asuka taunted her. Iyo came up behind Asuka. Kairi, meanwhile, side-swiped Ripley with a slidekick. Iyo then battered Asuka. Kairi leaped off the ring apron and hit Iyo. Asuka kicked Iyo. Kairi and Asuka celebrated as they cut to a break at 4:00.
[HOUR TWO]
[c] Kairi had Ripley grounded in a chinlock after the break. When Ripley made a comeback, she landed a kick to Kairi’s jaw. They replayed the impact in slo-mo. Ripley set up a suplex on the ring apron. Kairi blocked it. She then ducked a charging Ripley, who hit the ringpost and fell to the floor. Kairi then leaped off the top rope at Ripley. Asuka praised Kairi. Some fans chanted, “Asuka’s a Wanker.” (It didn’t have much rhythm and faded quickly.) Rhea stuffed a spear by Kairi and then landed a Razor’s Edge and a kick to the head for a two count at 12:00.
Kairi landed a double-stomp on Ripley after knocking her backwards after blocking a superplex attempt. She scored a two count. Ripley caught Kairi diving off the top rope and landed a face plant. Iyo yanked Asuka off the ring apron and kicked her. Kairi rolled up a distracted Ripley for a near fall. Ripley came right back with a Rip Tide for the win.
WINNER: Ripley 16:00.
-Asuka attacked Iyo at ringside as Ripley was celebrating. Ripley kicked Asuka and then cleared the announce desk. She set up a Rip Tide, but Kairi hit Ripley with a kendo stick. Asuka then gave Ripley a DDT on the top of the announce desk. Asuka and Kairi stood tall on the table. Kairi jabbed the stick at Ripley’s chest as they cut to a break.
(Keller’s Analysis: Good match. The distractions from Asuka were to be expected here, but the babyfaces fended it off astutely. If that’s the last image fans in Australia have of Ripley, there will be some sad fans.) [c]
-Jimmy Uso told Jey backstage that he’s going to represent well against Reed later. Jimmy asked if they’re really at fault for trying to help Reigns. Jey stood and defended Reigns by saying that Reigns said there’s one way and it’s his way. He said all he does is look out for himself, so maybe they should start doing the same. “What’re you talking about?” Jimmy asked. “That doesn’t even sound like you.” Jey said he can’t make the same mistake he made in Paris and stick his neck out for Roman because he wasn’t ready for his match as resault. Jimmy got upset and told Jey he can handle his business against Reed without his help. “You handle your business, I’ll handle mine,” he said.
(3) JIMMY USO vs. BRONSON REED
Reed came out first. Then Jimmy. Jimmy went right after Reed and the ref called for the bell. Cole said Reed targeted Jimmy’s taped injured ribs. Reed made a comeback, but Jimmy side-stepped him as he charged. Reed fell to ringside. Jimmy went after him at ringside. Jimmy shoved Reed into the ringpost. Cole said, “A very game Jimmy Uso tonight.” (That’s code for Jimmy is definitely losing.) Jimmy chopped away at Reed. Reed caught a leaping Jimmy and landed a powerslam. Jimmy clutched his ribs. [c]
The announcers said Jimmy probably shouldn’t even be wrestling. (The taped abdomen isn’t flattering to his belly, but I doubt that was their point.) Jimmy made a comeback and landed a top rope corkscrew (“Uso in the Wind”) dive for a two count. When Jimmy lifted Reed, he collapsed under his weight and then Reed landed a leaping senton. Reed followed with a top rope Tsunami for the three count. Cole said Reed might’ve broken every rib in Jimmy’s body. Barrett said Jimmy shouldn’t have been in the match.
WINNER: Reed in 8:00.
-Afterward, Breakker joined Reed in the aisle. They stopped and turned back to the ring. Breakker speared Jimmy twice. Breakker then ran around ringside toward Jimmy when Jey’s music played. Jey ran out so Breakker stopped in his tracks. Jey superkicked Reed in the ring and then fended off Breakker. Reed, though, splashed Jey in the corner. Jey caught Reed with a superkick, sending him to ringside. Jey turned to Jimmy and helped him up. They ended up having heated words. Jimmy seemed exasperated by Jey. Jey said, “I told you, man.” Jimmy said he didn’t need his help. Jey stormed out of the ring and glared at Jimmy. Cole said his brother was going to be sent to a hospital, so at least Jey thought about someone besides himself for once.
-Lyra Valkyria and Bayley were warming up backstage. Lyra said she still isn’t sure she can trust Bayley. Bayley asked what she meant. Lyra said unless she knows what she can expect out there, tonight is just a one-time thing. Bayley laughed at that notion and then turned to head to the ring.
-Bayley came out first. Lyra made her entrance next. [c]
-They showed Theo & Nathan Saidden at ringside, who are in a Netflix show.
(4) BAYLEY & LYRA VALYRIA vs. ROXANNE PEREZ & RAQUEL RODRIGUES
Perez and Rodrigues were in the ring after the break and their entrance theme faded. Cole told Barrett that one day, Bayley texts him nice comments and the next day she’ll call him an idiot. The bell rang 38 minutes into the hour. There was an awkward two-on-one by Lyra and Bayley against Raquel where they weren’t on the same page early. I don’t think it was on purpose to convey they weren’t on the same page, but they weren’t. At ringside, Bayley threw Lyra at Raquel, but Raquel caught her and then overhead tossed Lyra at Bayley. They cut to a break at 4:00 with Perez in control in the ring. [c]
The heel duo were in control of Bayley after the break. Fans chanted, “Let’s Go, Bayley!” As Bayley made a comeback, Raquel opened up the ropes and Bayley tumbled to the floor. Raquel kicked Bayley at ringside and then threw her back into the ring. Perez scored a two count, with Lyra breaking the up the cover (and it was a good, forceful, actual break-up of the cover). Lyra gave Bayley a pep talk and slapped her. Bayley laughed maniacally. (Lyra is learning from Asuka??) Bayley went into a rage and dove through the ropes and attacked Raquel and Perez at ringside. She threw Perez into the ring and leaped off the top rope with a flying elbowdrop. She followed with her Rose Plant for the win. Perez and Bayley hugged afterward. Cole said it was a “fun-loving Bayley” until the slap and then she got serious and it worked.
WINNERS: Valkyria & Bayley in 12:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: I’m not sure about two storylines where one wrestler is slapping another and it’s framed by the announcers and the overall narrative as sparking the target out of fear or inspiration. At least with this one, Bayley’s on board and not a subordinate to the aggressor and the intent is to inspire rather than instill fear.)
-Seth told Heyman backstage that he loves him. He said the last six months have been nothing but smiles, but they’re nothing compared to the next 6 or 12 or 18 months. He said the future is special and he can feel it and sense it. “Something big is on the horizon,” he said. Seth applauded as the victorious Reed walked in with Breakker. Seth said he is feeling great energy. Seth said the birth of his child, marrying his wife, and seeing how much they have grown are his proudest moments. He said, “This is the mountaintop, the rarefied air. Breathe that in. Very few men understand what this is like. And you guys are here. The crazy thing is I feel we are this close to taking the next step. I’m on Cloud 9, man. There is absolutely no one who can knock me off that mountaintop.”
(Keller’s Analysis: I’m not sure how much to trust and read into Breakker’s body language and facial expressions, but there are times he just seems to be barely tolerating Seth.)
-A vignette aired for Survivor Series: War Games. [c]
-Cole plugged tickets for Saturday Night’s Main Event tickets going on sale on Wednesday (pre-sale) and Friday. Cole noted Cena’s win over Styles was his 100th of all-time on a PLE, second only to Undertaker.
-Pearce told a ref to give him an update if he sees medical. A.J. Styles walked up to Pearce and said Crown Jewel was a great night. He said it would have been better if he won, “but it is what it is.” Dom interrupted. Pearce yelled at Dom. Dom asked what is up with him wrestling Rusev next week. He said he feels like the only working champion. Pearce asked if he cheated last time. Dom played dumb. Styles said Dom has a point about Dom being the only working champion, so he suggested to Pearce that Dom’s cohorts defend the tag titles against him and Dragon Lee. Pearce said it’ll happen next week. Pearce told a distressed Dom that he provided inspiration. Styles asked who should tell Finn Balor & J.D. McDonagh.
-Cole plugged Raw in Sacramento, Calif. next Monday. He listed scheduled matches: Becky Lynch would defend the IC Title against Maxinne Dupri and Dom vs. Rusev.
-Jackie Redmond introduced Stephanie Vaquer who made her entrance for an interview on the stage. She congratulated Vaquer for becoming the second-ever Crown Jewel Women’s Champion. Vaquer said she feels blessed. She said she is the first person in WWE history to win four titles in one year. Raquel and Perez walked out. Raquel asked why she was getting so emotional over a title she should have never won. Vaquer said it’s not her fault they’re upset for having bad night. Perez said she was the last one to beat Iyo and she should have had that match and she should be Crown Jewel Champion. Vaquer told Perez she will never beat her. She said she should stop crying and do something about it. Perez said she’ll do it on her time, not Vaquer’s. They had a staredown.
-Cole thanked the crowd for an incredible weekend. He said they were sold out for Smackdown, Crown Jewel, and Raw. He said the total combined attendance was 40,503.
[HOUR THREE]
-Jey was in the concourse and made his entrance through the crowd. When he got to the ring, he asked if they wanted a second run through. The fans cheered. His song played again. L.A. Knight’s theme then took over and he made his entrance. Then Punk. Fans sang the lyrics to Punk’s song with gusto after his music stopped.
(5) C.M. PUNK vs. L.A. KNIGHT vs. JEY USO – Winner Earns World Title match
The bell rang 12 minutes into the hour. Knight elbowed out of an early Go To Sleep attempt. Jey kicked Punk in the jaw. Fans enthusiastically chanted “C.M. Punk!” Jey then ran for a dive, but Knight cut him off. Knight then leaped off the ring apron with a wrecking ball kick. Jey dove through the ropes and tackled Knight. They cut to a break at 2:00. [c]
Back from the break, Jey and Knight were exchanging swings in the ring as fans yelled along. Punk recovered and landed a top rope bodypress. Fans chanted for Punk again. Punk kneed a charging Jey (although it was pretty off-target; not sure who’s fault, but Jey turned his body before reaching Punk’s knee and it just grazed his back).
Punk delivered a bulldog/clothesline combo on Knight and Jey. He stomped the mat and shook the top rope and then signaled for a GTS. Punk bodyslammed Knight instead and then leaped off the top rope and landed a flying elbowdrop. He then signaled for the GTS. Knight stood. Punk lifted him. Knight slipped free and landed an inverted DDT.
Jey got in the mix, but Knight quickly DDT’d him. Jey slipped out of his grip, though, when Jey’s legs got caught in the ropes. Knight leaped off the top rope with an elbowdrop on both Punk and Jey. He scored a two count on Punk and then Jey. “Something’s gotta give!” said Cole. They cut to a break at 8:00. [c]
Punk caught a charging Knight with a boot to the face. When Punk climbed to the top rope, Knight leaped up and met him and then delivered a superplex. Jey caught Knight with a quick top rope splash for a two count. A “Fight Forever!” chant started. Knight gave Punk a BFT. Jey yanked Knight off of Punk during the ref’s count. Then he threw him into the ringside steps. Jey quickly climbed to the top rope and went for a splash, but Punk lifted his knees. (That looked odd and lacked impact.) Punk then delivered a GTS for the three count. Cole said Punk has earned his shot at revenge against Seth. Jey’s teeth grill fell out. Punk noticed and grabbed them like he was being sneaky.
WINNER: Punk in 13:00 to earn a World Title match.
-As Punk celebrated his win, Seth’s music played. He walked out with the rest of The Vision. Breakker charged full speed down the aisle and speared Jey. Punk stared at Breakker from the ring. Breakker turned and charged at Knight and speared him. Cole said Punk was now surrounded by The Vision. Reed entered first. Then Breakker. Cole said it could be “a massacre” or “an assassination.” Breakker speared Punk. Seth then entered the ring and watched as Reed hit the Tsunami. Fans chanted, “One more time!”
(Keller’s Analysis: This shows how disengaged fans are from the ideal immersive experience by wanting a wrestler they were wildly cheering for to get another Tsunami. It was years in the making by wrestlers and promoters talking more about entertaining the fans than creating the realm where everything is treated as real during the actual show and where heel actions are decried rather than celebrated as resourceful and entertaining.)
As Seth’s music played, Breakker shocked Seth with a spear. Heyman’s jaw dropped. Fans popped. “What the hell is going on?” said Cole. Reed didn’t reveal if he knew that was coming or how he felt. Heyman looked at Reed as if to say, “Did you know?” or “How do you feel?” Breakker walked up to Reed and said he can choose to go with him or not. “Your call,” he said. Reed dragged Seth to the corner and landed a Tsunami. “What the hell is going on?” Barrett asked. Heyman told Breakker to back away. Breakker walked up to Heyman and grabbed his lapel and had a few intense words for him. Heyman then held the hands of Breakker and Reed and raised their arms. Cole completely missed calling that key moment as he was doing his sign off. He called it “a coup of epic proportions.”
(Keller’s Analysis: That came much quicker than I expected, but Seth was laying it on so thick that he seemed pretty insufferable. I did note earlier I wasn’t sure how to read into Breakker’s body language, but it turned out to be worth reading into; he did seem to getting sick of Seth’s self-centered bragging and patronizing of him and Reed. The question, as is often the case with Paul Levesque’s booking, whether fans will be clearly steered toward cheering one side and booing the other. Neither side is likeable, but I think fans are going to want to side with Breakker and Reed and Heyman. Seth has just been too much. But I’ll see how they tell the next chapter of this story before evaluating that aspect of this twist. If this was accelerated due to Seth suffering a legit shoulder injury that will require extended time off, then certainly some grace should afforded the logic and the timing. That could set up Seth to be easy pickings for Punk, and then Breakker as a heel will immediately step up to be Punk’s heel challenger. It’s a bummer for an angle of this magnitude that most people will hear about it first on social media or websites rather than watching it play out live due to the early Raw start time in the U.S.)
