[HOUR ONE]

-Joe Tessitore introduced the show, shifting to Mondays to accommodate his college football schedule in the fall. They showed an aerial view of Milwaukee as he referenced success for the local football teams over the weekend.

-A three minute video package aired including the return of A.J. Lee on Smackdown on Friday.

-They cut to Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch walking in the back hall.

-They went into the arena as a drone flew over the fans. Tessitore said it was a loud and ruckus crowd.

-Jey Uso made his ring entrance into the arena bowl from the concourse. He was joined by Jimmy. Tessitore said they have each others’ backs and are reunited. “A great scene here in Milwaukee, the Usos together again,” Tessitore sang.

-They went to Tessitore and Corey Graves at ringside. Tessitore said Wade Barrett was on a well-earned vacation. Graves, a bit obsessed with randos on the Internet as usual, made a reference to people online saying Barrett was exiled to some island. They commented on a clip of Jimmy running out to stop an attack by Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed last week.

Eight minutes into the show, the Usos stood mid-ring and spoke. “The Usos are now in the building!” Jey said. He brought up The Vision and made fun of their names. They were interrupted by Breakker and Reed who walked out onto the stage.

Breakker said it isn’t Smackdown and he asked Jimmy if he was lost. He said The Vision runs Monday Night Raw. “The Dogs run Monday Night Raw,” he added. Reed held Breakker back when he got worked up over what they did to Paul Heyman. Reed said all he wants from Roman Reigns’s family is for them to acknowledge “The Tribal Thief.” Fans loudly chanted, “OTC!” Fans sang “Roman, Roman Reigns!” (Oh no, it’s spreading.)

Reed said he isn’t coming back. Jimmy told Reed to shut his mouth. He said it irks him they have the “same name” and that they’re taking orders from Paul Heyman. Jimmy said they’re going up against the best team in the game, The Usos. Jey said they don’t need to wait. Bron said they are going to wait because Milwaukee doesn’t get to see the match. L.A. Knight attacked Breakker and Reed from behind. He was overwhelmed by the Brons. The Usos leaped through the ropes and tackled Bronson and Reed.

Knight and the Usos fought with Reed in the ring. Jimmy quickly superkicked Reed out of the ring. Knight and Jey argued. Tessitore said a lot happened between them in Paris.

(Keller’s Analysis: Breakker and Reed are getting a chance to carry the talking segments here without Paul Heyman and Seth Rollins doing the heavy listing. So far, so good. Breakker is doing well enough, but you’d still like to see him grow and show more range and a more distinct character than a tightly-wound hot-head and accentuates his syllables needlessly like his words are punching an enemy in the face. Reed has been even better and seems to be the “adult” in the room as he not only calms Breakker and restrains him physically sometimes, but has an eloquence to his delivery that contrasts effectively his brutality in the ring. He’s also so pleased with himself in a good way over stealing shoes. They aren’t going to grow without a chance to practice. I’m not 100 percent sold on Breakker as having enough range and depth of character to be a centerpiece star of the future as WWE is pushing, but I’m certainly not ruling it out.)

-They went to Tessitore and Graves who reacted to news of the Usos vs. Breakker & Reed being booked. Tessitore said next week’s Raw starts at 7 ET rather than 8 ET.

-A.J. Styles’s ring entrance took place. [c]

-Byron Saxton approached Knight backstage about his argument with Jey. He said he didn’t care about their family reunion. He said he didn’t throw Reed in front of him on purpose. He said if he has a problem with him, he isn’t a tough man to find. He stumbled over his words as he asked for a match against one of the Brons. He said he doesn’t care if he wins or loses as long as he gets a piece of them.

(Keller’s Analysis: Besides the obligatory one instance of stumbling over his words, this was a good promo. He’s always portrayed being confident in himself, but he was often a big fish in a small pond. He’s holding up in the mix of top stars now in the big pond of WWE. The confidence management is showing in him and the crowd responses have to be buoying for his confidence. The actual content of his promo is part of this, as he’s not backing down to Jey or showing any fear or hesitation to hold his ground when he feels he’s right. And he’s “right enough” not to seem like he’s just being stubborn.)

(1) A.J. STYLES vs. EL GRANDE AMERICANO

Styles was in the ring as Americano was introduced as being from the Gulf of America. Styles dropkicked Americano through the ropes as he arrived at ringside and then beat him up at ringside. Tessitore said Styles is still bothered by Americano perhaps costing him the match against Dominik Mysterio. Styles tossed him around ringside as the ref admonished him. As soon as they got in the ring, Americano took a swing at Styles. Styles ducked and clotheslined Americano. The ref called for the bell 25 minutes into the hour.

Styles signaled for an early Phenomenal Forearm, but another masked Americano pulled Styles off the ring apron by his boots. Americano then threw Styles over the ringside steps and Styles crashed on the floor. They cut to a break a minute in. [c]

Americano was in control after the break. Styles made a comeback with a cannonball in the corner at 6:00. He rallied with a blitz of strikes. Styles put Americano in a torture rack and then delivered a rack bomb for a two count. They announced Knight vs. Reed was just made official for later in the show. Americano went on offense and landed a modified blockbuster for a near fall.

Styles made a comeback and set up a Styles Clash. The second Americano stood on the ring apron. Dragon Lee yanked him off the apron. Lee then sent Americano hard to the mat with a huracanrana off the ring apron. Styles fended off an attack from behind in the ring and landed a Styles Clash for the win.

WINNER: Styles in 9:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: Good athletic hard-hitting fast-paced action on both sides of the break. This is a fine mid-card storyline.)

-Tessitore and Graves hyped World’s Collide.

-G.M. Adam Pearce told Iyo Sky that he had to cancel the contract signing because Stephanie Vaquer couldn’t make it to Raw. She asked about the title match. Nikki Bella walked in and asked for an update on Vaquer. Pearce said he expects her at WrestlePalooza. As Nikki and Iyo chatted, Asuka and Kairi Sane barged in. Nikki told Asuka she doesn’t have to like her, but she will respect her. Asuka said she’ll beat the respect out of her tonight. Nikki said, “You’re on.” As Kairi tried to talk to Sky after Asuka and Nikki left, Asuka yelled at Kairi to follow her.

(Keller’s Analysis: Does Stephanie Vaquer even exist? She’s like WWE’s imaginary friend at this point.)

-Tessitore hyped Sky vs. Vaquer at WrestlePalooza.

-Lyra Valkyria made her ring entrance. [c]

-Tessitore touted 178 million social views for the return of A.J. Lee, the most for any Smackdown highlight of the year.

-A vignette aired on Lee: “Pioneer, Innovator, Trailblazer” appeared on the screen. They used a clip of Cole saying, “I like her spunk.” Clips aired of her initial stint in WWE in 2011-2014 and then her return on Friday.

(Keller’s Analysis: WWE should treat Lee as a huge star. Fans are elated to see her back. A video like this is a great way to catch up newer fans on why the reaction to her is so strong.)

-Tessitore and Cole said she’s be on Raw later. Tessitore said it’s happen in “just moments.”

(2) LYRA VALKYRIA vs. RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ (w/Roxanne Perez)

The bell rang 44 minutes into the hour. Graves announced that Pearce booked Asuka vs. Nikki later tonight. Rodriguez overpowered Lyra in the opening minutes. Lyra made a comeback with a springboard armdrag and an enzuigiri. Lyra played to the crowd and landed a swing kick through the ropes. Back in the ring, she leaped off the top rope with a bodypress. Raquel caught her mid-air and landed a fallaway slam. [c]

They spent the next couple minutes countering each other. Lyra landed a jumping DDT for a near fall at 9:00. Raquel countered Lyra into a slingshot suplex for a near fall. Lyra countered Raquel on the top rope and landed a sunset bomb for a near fall.

Lyra lifted Raquel for a Night Wing. Roxanne jumped onto the ring apron. Lyra decided to walk over and yell at her, turning her back to Raquel. Raquel went after Lyra, but Lyra ducked a clothesline and then landed a swing kick on Perez. Raquel leveraged Raquel’s shoulders down for a near fall right afterward. Lyra followed with a kick to the head and then climbed to the top rope. She set up a legdrop, but Raquel blocked it and then landed her Tejana Bomb for the win.

WINNER: Rodriguez in 13:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: There’s a “try hard” enthusiasm to Lyra that works both for and against her, and it’s always on display in her ring work and promos. Raquel is doing solid in-ring work and was a nice contrast here style-wise to Lyra’s more agile fast-pace. They largely pulled off smoothly an ambitious series of counter-moves. It’s good to give Raquel a win over someone of substance to keep her relevant. The Perez interference didn’t make the win feel cheat as it happened long enough before the pin.)

-Penta and The War Raiders were hanging out backstage chatting together. Penta then told Pearce that when he came to WWE, everyone loved him, but he (Pearce) doesn’t. Pearce said he’s impressed with him. As he talked about the Intercontinental Title, Rusev interrupted. He told Pearce he crushed Sheamus and wants to become champion. He told Pearce not to waste his time with demons and clowns. Penta got in Rusev’s face. Pearce stepped between them and said they should wrestle each other for the first time ever tonight.

(Keller’s Analysis: Rusev does actually live in the same universe as other WWE wrestlers and not just in a dark room with a camera set up pointing at him. Penta showed more personality here and more human-like gestures than his fun but rote routine in his ring entrance and in the ring that could largely be lifted from some video game. Even if you couldn’t make out his words, his body language and inflection made it pretty clear what he was getting at. I like Rusev moving on from Sheamus and stating a mission to go after a title.)

-Tessitore said it was time for Magic in Milwaukee with Lee next.

[HOUR TWO]

[c]

-Tessitore plugged WrestleMania tickets. Then they showed scenes of Milwaukee.

-Styles thanked Lee backstage. Jimmy walked up to them and asked if they had seen Jey. Jimmy saw Jey and asked what he was doing. He said they had a play to run. Jey asked, “What play?” Jimmy brought up Knight vs. Reed. Jey said that’s not his problem. Jimmy said The Vision is their problem. Jey said he isn’t going to let what Knight did slide. He said helping Knight won’t help them at WrestlePalooza or gets his World Title back. He told Jimmy now that he’s at Raw, he’s there to make sure they acknowledge them or they’ll smash all of them. A calm Jimmy told a worked up Jey that he’s not sounding like himself. “You’re kinda sounding like Roman.” Fans oooh’d. Jey said, “Maybe sounding like myself ain’t working.” He turned and left, carrying his bag with him to exit the arena.

(Keller’s Analysis: Jey Uso, like Sami Zayn, is always going through some sort of self-doubt and inner-conflict. WWE has gotten a lot out of him this year as a babyface with the big entrances through the crowd. That bond with fans is strong, so it makes sense to use that investment fans have in him with a more complex story with Knight and Jimmy. Jimmy has played the “big brother” role here, observing and commenting on Jey’s stubborn grudge and attitude shift. Paul Levesque goes to bickering babyfaces too often, but this is a good version of that.)

-A.J. Lee made her entrance. She skipped to the ring to cheers. Tessitore noted she had Becky Lynch’s IC Title belt around her waist. Fans chanted, “Welcome back!” She thanked the fans. She said for those who weren’t there ten years ago and were wondering why their millennial parents were really excited on Friday, “Allow me to introduce myself. My name is A.J. Lee. And I am your favorite wrestler’s favorite wrestler.” A loud, “A.J. Lee! A.J Lee!” chant broke out.

She said ten years ago she retired. Fans booed. “I said I was sorry, oh my god,” she joked. She said she thought she accomplished everything she wanted. She said she didn’t think she would step back in the ring “wearing jeans shorts that were two sizes too small.” She said she went on a mental health journey. She said she wasn’t healthy and needed to take care of herself and “get right.” She said she went to therapy and got treatment. She exclaimed, “Therapy! Cheer for therapy.” Fans chanted, “Therapy!” She said she found a way to turn all of the mental chaos into her super power.

She said the fight is not easy and every day is a fight. She said the fight is worth it and “you are worth it.” She said she was doing really good for a long time. She said then she watched Raw. She said it’s one thing to see your husband fight Drew McIntyre or Seth Rollins or John Cena, but it’s another to see him fighting Becky Lynch. She said she wanted to like Becky and felt they had a lot in common. She said she’s a leader, a rebel, and a best-selling author. “I did it first, yes,” she said.

She said there’s a world in which they could have been friends, “but then she had to go and motorboat my husband.” She said she put her hands on him and defamed him. Becky’s music then played.

Becky walked out, looking very grumpy. She stood in the aisle with a mic in hand and said, “This has nothing to do with your stank ass husband.” She asked if everybody was insane. “Has nobody noticed?” she said. “Is everybody stupid?” She took a dig at Milwaukee. “She’s wearing my title!” she said. She said she has made it the most important title in the division. She said she’s the greatest female wrestler and said it’s not even close. “Other people say it,” she said. “Sports Illustrated said it.” She cited other newspapers who said it. She said she’s going to need to go to therapy after this. Lee said she should.

Lynch said she doesn’t deserve to put a finger on her title. “It works, I swear,” Lee said. “I have a couple numbers I can give you.” Lee said she forgot she was wearing the belt. She said she slept in it last night. Lynch told her not to put her “grubby hands” on her title. Lee pointed out Lynch had a black eye. She said she sometimes she goes feral and apologized.

Lee said since Lynch is “the greatest of all time,” she ought to come get the belt. She lay it at her feet. Lynch stepped toward the ring, but paused and tried to gather herself. Fans chanted, “Chicken! Chicken!” Lynch called Lee, “You Jersey trash bag weirdo.” She said she had to bathe in bleach after touching her “dirty husband.” She asked where he was. Fans chanted, “C.M. Punk!”

Lynch said, “What kind of man hides behind his wife.” She said it had everything to do with their vision and she didn’t need to stick her neck in where it doesn’t belong. She said she should get her “hot husband” out there to show “what a real man looks like.” Seth came out to his theme and fans sang his song.

Seth told Lee to just hand over the title so they can leave the city. Lee said she had a better idea. She told Lynch to come try to take it, but at the risk of getting another black eye. Or she can give her the belt back if she agrees to a tag match at WrestlePalooza. “Pick your poison,” she said. Fans chanted, “C.M. Punk!”

Seth said Lee has been gone ten years and apparently doesn’t understand how things work. He said he is the World Champion and this is his show and they are his people. He said he calls the shots, so he’s going to enter the ring and take the belt and give it back to his wife. “And that’s going to be the end of it,” he said. Lee thanked him for “man-splaining it, everyone loves it.” When Seth entered the ring, Lee blocked him from reaching for the belt.

Seth was seething and told her to listen good. “That doesn’t not belong to you,” he said. As Seth lectured her, Punk came out to cheers. He walked past Lynch and entered the ring. He lifted Seth for a GTS, but Seth slipped free and to ringside. Seth accepted the match at WrestlePalooza. He said they’re both “done for.” He told Lynch they are going to put an end to it. Lee then kissed the IC belt and threw it to them at ringside. Lee’s music played and she hugged Punk.

(Keller’s Analysis: A.J. Lee held court well, with confidence despite not talking live on international TV for that length perhaps ever before. There was a risk of her coming across as too self-involved and even preachy, but I don’t think that happened her. The crowd ate up everything she said about her decision to walk away from WWE, to getting treatment, to then deciding to return because of Becky. Speaking of Becky, she’s been a great foil for Lee to play off of. Lee comes across as a centered, smart, strong alpha who’s not going to put up with Becky’s crap. I hope they don’t try to play off of the “Therapy!” thing after tonight, though. It was fun, but it shouldn’t become Lee’s “Yes!” chant or anything like that. I’d glad Lee ultimately tossed the stolen property (the title belt) back to Becky. It’s not hers to hold onto until she wins it, but using it for ransom to get a match she wants was effective here because Becky took away any sympathy fans might have had for her given how she whined about it.)

-Tessitore got in some plugs.

-Penta made his ring entrance. [c]

-A Bayley vignette aired. She said she’s not sure what the next step is. She said the last person she wanted to hurt was Lyra. She said she hurt a lot of people in the past, but they mostly deserved it. She said they found it in their heart to forgive her. She said she’s a good person and she doesn’t know how Lyra can find it in herself to forgive her “when Lyra can’t even forgive myself.” We then heard Bayley’s inner-thoughts laughing and telling her to “save it for her diary.” Bayley winced at the voices. “Take a hint, move on, we have to do what’s best for us,” the inner voice said. Bayley then said, “I’ll make it right.”

(Keller’s Analysis: The first half of this, with camera angles on both the right and the left interchanging as Bayley shifted between essentially communicating her conflicted thoughts with her two personalities emerging and competing. That’s the way this should have been shot from the beginning. All hope was lost, though, as then they went back to the ludicrous post-production of hearing her inner-voice. It’s not that this, in and of itself, is going to hurt Bayley. This storyline, in fact, I think is intriguing. Bayley needed something new. The issue is just it’s so incredibly narrative-structure-breaking for WWE to present it this way. No where else in the way pro wrestling is presented can we hear someone’s inner thoughts. Everything is presented to us as if a camera person is there filming something happening in real-time, or something is post-produced from Raw footage. If you’re going to defend this as being okay, then you should also be okay with them piping in Bayley’s inner-dialogue over the speakers during her matches. That would be, truly, equally stupid.)

-Tessitore said Bayley’s inner-struggle is fascinating. Graves said she could benefit from Lee’s therapist.

(3) PENTA vs. RUSEV

The bell rang 33 minutes into the hour. Graves said Rusev returned to WWE in better shape than when he left. He tossed Penta into the announce desk and then charged at Penta, but Penta moved and Rusev bashed into the steps. They cut to an early break. [c]

Tessitore touted “the massive crowd” as they showed a wide shot of the arena. Penta was on offense after the break, scoring a two count on Rusev. New Day and Greyson Waller walked out. Penta landed a running flip dive over the top rope onto the crowd at ringside. When he went for a dive into Rusev at ringside, Rusev punched him out of mid-air.

Penta came back with a Mexican Destroyer for a near fall at 7:00. Both were down and slow to get up. When Penta climbed to the top rope, Xavier Woods charged at him on the ring apron. Penta kicked him. When Penta then leaped at Rusev, Rusev landed his signature kick for the win.

WINNER: Rusev in 9:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: Fun match with a contrast in styles. If there was ever going to be a non-clean finish, this is it, as I don’t sense WWE wants to send a message to viewers that either Rusev or Penta is definitively better than the other. The Xavier interference in the closing sequence “protects” Penta from looking like Rusev is better than him, while forwarding a storyline with Penta and New Day. Rusev, as a heel, gets the bragging point of a technical win to then move on.) [c]

-They got in more plugs. They aired highlights of the Sami Zayz vs. John Cena match on Smackdown and then Brock Lesnar’s run-in.

-Jimmy approached Knight. Knight said he tried to play the nice guy and make peace, but it hasn’t worked. He said Jey kept him from winning the World Title. He said if you rewind enough, Jimmy kept him from winning a world title too. He said if he wants to help, don’t help. He said he would do things his way.

(Keller’s Analysis: More good strong-willed justified attitude from Knight. You can at least see where he’s coming from with is frustrations.)

-Nikki Bella made her entrance. [c]

(4) ASUKA (w/Kairi Sane) vs. NIKKI BELLA

The end of Asuka’s entrance aired. The bell rang 54 minutes into the hour. Graves talked about Nikki’s motivation to return to WWE being because she wanted her daughter to see her wrestle. Graves said Nikki is already a Hall of Famer and he is sure Asuka will join her some day.

Nikki landed a spinebuster for a near fall early in the match. Asuka used Kairi as a shield at ringside. Asuka then caught a frustrated Nikki with a kick to the head. They cut to a break as Asuka celebrated. [c]

[HOUR THREE]

Asuka suplexed Nikki and then leaped off the second rope with a senton splash attempt, but Nikki moved. Nikki connected with a kick a minute later for a near fall. Graves said Nikki needed to keep her foot on the gas pedal and not pause to catch her breath. Nikki lifted Asuka, but Asuka turned it into a sunset flip into a clunky near fall. Asuka then kicked her in the head at 8:00. Asuka went for an Asuka lock, but Nikki blocked it. As she charged at Asuka, Asuka kicked her. Asuka then went for the Asuka lock again, but Nikki countered into a roll-up for a near fall. Nikki then landed an Alabama Slam for a near fall.

Nikki set up a Rack Attack, but Asuka slipped free and then ducked a Nikki kick. She then connected with a spin wheel kick. She then applied the Asuka lock for the win.

WINNER: Asuka via submission in 10:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: Good to see a clean finish here. The action was fine. Asuka is really good and Nikki is barely passable while seeming to put in an honest effort every time. I think it’s good to establish Nikki as something below Asuka in the pecking order of the division at this point.)

-They replayed the A.J. Lee segment earlier.

-They got in plugs including John Cena on Raw next week.

-Backstage, The Judgment Day were chatting. Dom walked in. Balor asked where he’s been and asked if he’s been hanging with Americano. Balor said nobody offers help unless they’re expecting something in return. Dom said Americano is trying to help “because it’s a lucha thing.” He said they wouldn’t understand. He ranted about them getting banned last week. Roxanne offered to go talk with Dom. She chased after him.

(Keller’s Analysis: Raquel’s reactions to Dom and staying loyal to Liz in the presence of Roxanne keeps that story alive as they shift some of the focus to Dom shifting to aligning with his fellow luchadors.)

-L.A. Knight made his entrance for the main event. [c]

-Asuka approached Nikki backstage and asked what has happened to her. Nikki said she’s sick of her and is ready for round two. Rhea Ripley showed up. Fans cheered. Asuka poked at her and said she is the top woman in WWE. Rhea asked if it was Iyo wrestling for the world title, not her. Asuka ranted and stormed off.

(5) L.A. KNIGHT vs. BRONSON REED (w/Bron Breakker)

The bell rang 15 minutes into the hour. Knight flung himself at Reed, but Reed caught him. Knight elbowed out of it, but Reed dropped down toward him. Knight moved. Reed took over and battered Knight. Knight landed a wrecking ball kick on Reed at ringside. He turned and yapped at Breakker who returned the verbal attack. Reed charged, but Knight shoved him into the ringpost. Knight threw down the ringside steps and looked at Breakker as they cut to a break. [c]

Reed powerslammed Knight for a two count right after the break. Breakker choked Knight over the bottom rope as the ref was occupied by Reed. Graves said he believes Breakker is a future WrestleMania main eventer and the future of the business. Knight side-stepped a charging Reed and sent him into the corner head-first. Knight punched away at Reed and then stomped on him in the corner. Reed tossed Knight over the top rope. Tessitore said he “rag-dolled him like he weighs nothing.” Graves called that a “morale crusher” and called it “horrifying power.”

Reed then charged at Knight at ringside, but Knight side-stepped him again and threw him over the barricade. Knight then leaped off the announce desk and then onto the ringside barricade and then leaped into Reed. He almost came up short, but knocked Reed down.

Back in the ring, Knight avoided a charging Reed again. He went for a jumping neckbreaker, but Reed blocked it. Reed went for a senton, but Knight moved. Knight climbed to the second rope, hopped to the top rope, and landed a flying elbowdrop. Knight went for BFT. Reed blocked it. Breakker stood on the ring apron. Knight forearmed him off the top rope. Reed then landed his Jagged Edge for the win.

WINNER: Reed in 12:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: Most of Knight’s offense seemed to be side-stepping a charging Reed. A decent hard-hitting match.)

-Jimmy Uso charged out and stopped a post-match attack by Breakker and Reed. Breakker speared Jimmy, who clutched his forearm afterward. Reed landed a senton on Jimmy. Jey then made the save. “I thought he took off!” exclaimed Tessitore. Jey superkicked Reed and exchanged punches with Breakker. He knocked Breakker down. He superkicked Reed, but then Breakker speared him.

When they set up a Tsunami, Knight recovered and cleared the ring with a chair. The heel duo retreated. Knight helped Jimmy to his feet and said, “We’re good.” They shook hands. Jey then speared Knight. Fans were shocked. Jimmy stared at Jey and looked down at Knight. Jey said, “We good now.” Jey yelled “Yeet!” One fan chanted “Holy shit!” as the show ended.

(Keller’s Analysis: I don’t think fans are supposed to see this as a heel turn, but rather just Jey’s frustrations boiling over and his ambition to prove himself as an alpha going a bit too far. Jimmy seemed surprised by Jey’s attack and didn’t show overt approval or disapproval, as he was just processing what happened. I think this is a compelling story to create some week to week drama with this group.)
