[PRE-SHOW]

Hosts: Renee Paquette, Jeff Jarrett, R.J. City

-Renee Paquette, Jeff Jarrett, and R.J. City hosted a panel discussion during the pre-show (your home for AEW/ROH wrestlers you didn’t know were still on the roster if you only watch Dynamite). R.J. told the Academy Awards to “go to hell.” (That awards show is live on ABC opposite of this event.)

(A) BOOM & DOOM (A.J. & Q.T. Marshall w/Aaron Solo, Big Justice, The Rizzler) vs. THE INFANTRY (Shawn Dean & Carlie Bravo w/Shane Taylor, Trish Adora, Cyrstal XO)

Schiavone said they never thought Big Boom and Marshall would ever trust each other. (True, although that’s only because nobody ever thought about their relationship, period.) Excalibur brought up the Academy Awards were nearby also in Los Angeles. Big Boom rallied with one power move after another on both Dean and Bravo. A minute later, Boom kicked out late so the ref had to stop is count, although Schiavone said his shoulders were covered. (Nice try. Kick out, Boom!)  Taylor yanked on the top rope when Marshall ran toward it, so Marshall tumbled to the floor.

Taylor got in Wayne Brady’s face. Brady slapped Taylor, so Taylor yanked him over the barricade. The Rizzler walked up to Taylor, upset. Taylor shoved the kid down. Big Justice speared Taylor. Marshall then leaped off the top rope onto Taylor, Dean, and Bravo at ringside. “What an entertaining match!” said Schiavone. Big Boom lifted Dean and then Marshall clotheslined him. Boom scored the pin.

WINNERS: Marshall & Big Boom in 8:00.

(B) WILLOW NIGHTINGALE vs. LENA KROSS – TBS Title match

The commentators noted Willow volunteered to wrestle twice on this show as she’s defending the tag titles later. Kross went for a cover by sitting arrogantly on Willow. The announcers commented on her arrogance. Nigel said it’s hard not to be cocky with the early success Kross has had. Excalibur said it could be her trying to get in Willow’s head. Her next cover was strong, but Willow kicked out.

Willow took control at ringside until Kross caught her as she charged and dropped her shoulder-first over the ringside barricade. Kross taunted Willow with half-speed slaps mid-ring. That fired up Willow. She landed a spinebuster on Kross a minute later for a two count. Lena hook kicked Willow. It showed light, but Willow sold it, so Excalibur paused to decide how to address it. He called it a grazing blow that was enough to drop Willow.

They stood and took turns chopping each other. Kross avoided a Willow cannonball in the corner. Willow avoided Kross’s subsequent moonsault. Kross then kicked Willow in the head and followed with a Jackhammer attempt. Willow slipped free and won with a backslide.

WINNER: Willow in 11:00.

-Megan Bayne attacked Willow afterward. Harley Cameron made the save. Willow was selling her shoulder afterward.

(C) BLACKJACK BATTLE ROYAL – TNT Title match

Ricochet was the incumbent champion. Ricochet, Tommaso Ciampa, Jack Perry, Rocky Romero, Trent Beretta, Rush, Anthony Bowens, Hook, Katsuyori Shibata, Ace Austin, Austin Gunn, Juice Robinson, Daniel Garcia, Scorpio Sky, and Drastlico were announced ahead of time. The ref wouldn’t let Toa Liona and Bishup Kaun join him at ringside. Ricochet protested. Perry was driven into the arena on the Jurassic Express School Bus. He then came out as fans sang his “Tarzan Boy” theme song. Excalibur said Perry has to be one of the favorites because he has pinned Ricochet three times in the past, but they were in tag matches. Nigel called out Excalibur for that not making any difference in a match like this. Excalibur said he realized as he said it how dumb it sounded.

Deep into the match, Scorpio Sky was battling Shibata. Bowens intervened and tossed Sky out of the ring. As Bowens and Shibata stared each other down, Rush and Beast Mortos joined in the fight.

Komander hung from the top rope after Trent tossed him. He then used a body scissors to yank him over the top rope. Garcia yanked of Komander’s mask, so Komander got tossed as he protected his identity. Garcia gloated and put on Komander’s mask. Newly turned heel Ciampa, in a babyface spot, eliminated Garcia. Ace, Ricochet, and Rush battled next. Juice eliminated Ciampa as they cut away to the PPV portion.

[PAY-PER-VIEW]

Perry and Ricochet were battling at the end. Perry went for a sunset bomb on Ricochet, but put himself at risk if his boots touched. Neither went over to the floor. Perry climbed to the top rope. Ricochet pulled him into his shoulders, but Perry used a reverse rana to eliminate Ricochet to win.

WINNER: Perry to capture the TNT Title.

(1) FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler w/Stokely Hathaway) vs. THE YOUNG BUCKS (Matt & Nick Jackson) – AEW World Tag Team Title match

The Bucks were joined by six kids who are part of the Jackson family. Schiavone called it a wonderful moment. FTR wheeled Stokely to the ring. They fought at ringside early where Dax ended up cut on the forehead from a ringpost.

FTR delivered a stuff piledriver on Matt at ringside. Nick rolled into the ring seconds later, bleeding from the forehead. Dax and Cash punched away at Nick in the ring and then set up another stuff piledriver. Nick blocked it and superkicked Cash and then Dax. He dropped onto Dax and scored a near fall. Matt remained down at ringside for an extended period. When he stood, Cash drove him into the ringside barricade.

Matt eventually hot-tagged in. He rallied. He got a pep talk from a family member at ringside. Dax yeld onto Matt’s boot and yanked him onto the ring apron. Matt leaped off the top rope a minute later with crossbody press onto Dax for a near fall. Dax continued bleeding heavily. Matt applied a sharpshooter on Dax. Nick stopped Cash from interfering and applied his own sharpshooter. FTR escaped.

Wild action ensued. Dax sitout powerbombed Matt and scored a near fall. Fans chanted, “AEW! AEW!” Cash swung a tag title belt at Matt. Matt ducked. Schiavone said he didn’t fear getting DQ’d. FTR suplexed The Bucks off the ring apron to ringside.

They all reentered the ring where the Bucks took control with a barrage of superkicks. There was blood splattered and pooled several places at ringside. Stokely held Nick’s leg on a springboard attempt, slowing him down. When Nick launched, FTR caught him with a Shatter Machine for a two count. Stokely showed he didn’t need the wheelchair. Nigel was astonished. Dax thought he won a minute later, but Nick’s boot was draped on the bottom rope. The ref informed him. FTR took out their frustrations on Nick with a series of superkicks. Nick kicked out at one and fired up, which got a big rise from the crowd. FTR looked on wide-eyed.

FTR battled back and set up Shatter Machine. The Bucks fought through and gave Dax superkicks and a Shatter Machine of their own. They delivered BTE Drivers for a near fall. Fans chanted “AEW!” Cash dove through the ropes, but Nick ducked. Nick leaped through the ropes on the other side of the ring and tackled Stokely off his wheelchair. Then he delivered their springboard driver for a believable near fall.

Matt psyched up Nick and they signaled for another move. Cash intervened. FTR gave Matta. stuff piledriver and then gave Matt a top rope Shatter Machine for the win.

WINNERS: FTR to retain the AEW Tag Team Titles.

-The lights went out as FTR were celebrating and then the big screen said “Even” which then extended into “Revenge.” Adam Copeland’s music played and he came out to a big pop. Christian Cage’s music played next and he came out behind FTR and Stkely. He sprayed Cash in the face and gave a Killswitch to Dax. Copeland then speared Cash. Stokely begged off. He shook hands with Christian, but Christian gave him a Killswitch. Copeland then tossed Stokely out of the ring.

Copeland and Christian held the tag belts. Copeland told FTR, “This is how we hurt you.” The Bucks stood and had a brief tense moment with Copeland and Christian, who then set the belts down and left to Copeland’s music. (Was that a coin flip to decide whose music played?)

(Keller’s Analysis: Wild, well-executed tag match start to finish. The family at ringside weren’t a big factor except for a pep talk. Although there was some interference from Stokely, the finish itself was pretty clean and decisive for FTR. Given their pivot to Copeland and Christian, it made sense.)

-They went to Excalibur, Schiavone, and Nigel at ringside. Excalibur noted they sold out the arena. He noted they were streaming for the first time ever on MyAEW.com.

(2) TONI STORM vs. MARINA SHAFIR – Everyone Banned from Ringside

Shafir made her entrance first after getting psyched up with Wheeler Yuta and Garcia backstage. The bell rang 41 minutes into the hour with Shafir attacking Storm right away. Shafir landed some strikes, then marched around the ring and gloated to the crowd.

She threw some roundkicks to Storm’s chest as she kneeled. Nigel said she should have put her arms up to protect herself. Excalibur said perhaps it was a strategy to bait her into those kicks with a counter move plan that hasn’t played out yet. Storm caught Shafir with a sleeper. Shafir escaped and stopped Storm’s comeback with a pump kick to Storm’s head.

Shafir avoided a hip attack and went for a suplex off the ring apron. Storm held onto the ropes, so Shafir kicked her in the back. She then landed a back suplex to the floor. Storm avoided a kick, so Shafir sold a foot injury. Storm bit Shafir’s foot.

They battled in the ring. Storm landed three German suplexes mid-ring, then landed two hip attacks. Shafir yelled for her to bring on a third. She did. She then hit a Storm Zero for a believable near fall. Storm bit Shafir’s left boob. “That’s the first time I’ve ever seen that in my life,” Schiavone said.  Storm then won with a small package. Nigel called it “a cinematic victory.” (Head over to the Oscars, Toni!)

WINNER: Storm in 10:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: They pulled this off pretty well, with Shafir staying within her lane of specialty and dominating as Storm sold before making a comeback including a notable strategy with her teeth. The contrast of the two characters worked well here and there was a very good chance it might not have.)

-Ronda Rousey then entered the ring. She called out Storm. Storm had made her way to the stage, but sat up and smiled and headed to the ring. Storm got in Rousey’s face. “A tantalizing prospect,” said Nigel. Shafir sucker punched Storm. Shafir and her longtime friend and training partner Rousey gloated as they left. Mina Shirakawa and Luther checked on Storm on the floor.

(Keller’s Analysis: If nothing else, AEW is helping Rousey promote her May. 16 fight against Gina Carano. Perhaps she wrestles, too. A tag match feels pretty turnkey here.)

(3) JON MOXLEY vs. KONOSUKE TAKESHITA – AEW Continental Title match with no time limit

Moxley made his entrance through a back hall and crossed paths with Shafir and Rousey who wished him luck. As Takeshita came out, they went to Renee at ringside who noted that no one is allowed at ringside and there must be a definitive winner. The bell rang 58 minutes into the hour.

The early minutes were strong, with back and forth intense strikes and mostly matwork. The downside of a “no time limit” stip is that it sends a pretty strong signal there won’t be a finish before they get past that usual 20 minute time limit. At 11:00, they stood and exchanged strikes. Mox ducked a swing and applied a sleeper. Takeshita escaped, but sold a knee injury.

They battled on the ring apron next. Mox landed a stomp, sending Takeshita crashing to the floor. Mox walked around the ring raising his middle fingers in the air. Takeshita bled from the forehead. They went back to exchanging rapid-fire strikes mid-ring. Mox landed a leaping piledriver for a near fall at 15:00. Mox applied a crossface mid-ring and shifted into a chinlock. Takeshita back elbowed to escape.

Mox and Takeshita went forehead-to-forehead. They collided mid-ring with clotheslines. Takeshita then took Mox down with a hard lariat. Mox stood only to absorb a running knee in the corner. Takeshita landed an exploder suplex off the top rope and then a running high knee for a near fall. Mox fought back with a sudden Paradigm Shift.

They took turns suplexing each other, one after another. Mox took Takeshita down with a lariat. Takeshita kicked out at one. Takeshita landed a Raging Fire a minute later at 20:00 for a super close near fall. Excalibur said Takeshita was stunned by the kickout. Fans chanted “Fight Forever.”

Takeshita charged, but his knee gave out. Mox kicked his knee and then landed a Death Rider for a near fall. Fans popped for the kickout.

Mox applied a sleeper. Takeshita gave Mox a middle finger, but Mox held the grip. Takeshita passed out and the ref called for the bell. Schiavone said it would have been “way beyond a draw” under normal rules. (Not “way beyond.”) Exacalibur emphasized that Takeshita didn’t tapout, as if that made a difference. Pac was among those applauding afterward.

WINNER. Moxley in 23:00 to retain the TNT Title.

-Takeshita passed on Mox’s offer of a gesture of sportsmanship afterward. As he began to leave the ring, he paused and returned and agreed to shake Moxley’s hand afterall. Mox celebrated to his music.

(Keller’s Analysis: Expectations were high and it depends on your expectations whether this exceeded them. It was a really good, intense, well-executed match that matched the styles of these two with a bit of a slower pace early but it really peaked well.)

-The lights went out and then a video played featuring a green tint and then red tint and then green and red as someone’s X-ray was shown. Someone was gassed. Then Will Ospreay was shown coming to life again. He removed a gas mask and let out a roar.

-They cut to Mox who was upset and waved his arms as if upset with the interruption. Ospreay’s music played and he walked out onto the stage. Mox continued to look annoyed and he entered the ring. Ospreay charged into the ring and tacked Mox. Pac, Yuta, and Garcia entered and went after Ospreay. Ospreay landed some Hidden Blades to clear the ring. He then landed a twisting dive onto Garcia and Yuta at ringside. Mox fled from Ospreay’s pursuit.

(Keller’s Analysis: Mox’s character remains all over the place, playing a good sport with Takeshita and then being part of a thuggish group of heels against top babyface Ospreay looking for revenge.)

-Renee interviewed Willow and Harley backstage who had their gamefaces on. Willow was nursing a sore shoulder, but said she’d give it her best shot. Harley closed with fired up encouragement.

(4) BABES OF WRATH (Harley Cameron & Willow Nightingale) vs. MEGAN BAYNE & RENA KROSS – AEW Women’s Tag Team Title match

Bayne and Kross attacked Harley and Willow before the bell and were rewarded with the ref calling for the bell. The match began 34 minutes into hour two. Willow landed a Pounce several minutes in. Then she landed a Death Valley Driver on Kross.

As Kross suplexed Harley, Bayne aimed to kick Harley, but the suplex was ahead of the kick. Kross kicked Willow and went for a Jackhammer. Willow countered with a backslide. Bayne clotheslined Willow. Bayne and Kross landed a double slam and in a sudden finish, Kross pinned Willow. Excalibur said Willow’s injury left her vulnerable.

WINNERS: Bayne & Kross in 6:00 to capture the AEW Women’s Tag Team Titles.

(Keller’s Analysis: The outcome was foreshadowed with all the talk of Willow’s shoulder injury and paying a price for wrestling twice on one event. The match was short, but that’s a good choice. I think a submission might’ve made more sense here for a move that put torque on a shoulder.)

(5) SWERVE STRICKLAND (w/Prince Nana) vs. BRODY KING

Danielson took over for Nigel for the second half of the PPV at this point. The fans were worked up before the bell chanting “F— Ice!” and cheering in general. Brody went on the attack early. Brody barked. Swerve took out Brody down. The announcers laughed and conceded it was pretty awesome. Swerve stomped on Brody’s chest and then exposed a turnbuckle. He then drove Brody head-first into the exposed turnbuckle. Brody made a comeback at ringside and slammed Swerve onto the ringside barricade. An audible “F— Ice!” chant broke out briefly here.

As Brody put Swerve on the top turnbuckle, another chant that seemed to be “F— Ice!” broke out. Brody wrapped Swerve around the ringpost. Swerve tapped, but Excalibur pointed out the hold wasn’t legal. Brody leaped off the ring apron and drove Swerve’s back onto the ringside steps. Brody landed a turning sidewalk slam at ringside. Fans chanted, “Brody! Brody!” Swerve writhed in pain.

They stood on the ring apron and exchanged chops to the chest. Swerve landed a powerbomb on the ring apron. Both were down and slow to get up.

They continued to fight back and forth, including the exposed turnbuckle coming into play. Eventually, Swerve landed a Vertebreaker on the exposed concrete floor. Brody’s head bounced off the floor. Brody rolled into the ring at the count of nine. Swerve landed a top rope Swerve Stomp for just a one count. (Is that the third time there’s been a one-count kickout after a big move deep into a match tonight?) Brody powered up and went after Swerve, but Swerve ducked and landed a House Call for the win.

WINNER: Swerve in 15:00.

-Nana slid a cinder block into the ring. Swerve put Brody’s head on the block. Kenny Omega ran out for the save.

(Keller’s Analysis: A clean win for Swerve, although the idea that anything goes at ringside in a regular match is weird when they often do ref distractions just to sneak in an eye poke at times in other situations to avoid getting DQ’d. This was a good, intense match, following the theme of the night.)

NOTE: With four matches left, there’s no good reason for this show to even approach four hours total of PPV time given what’s left – a Women’s Title match, a Trios Title match, and Tornado match that felt like a late throw-in, and the MJF-Hangman main event. I’m curious if there’s a match that goes needlessly long or something else added. If the Women’s Title match goes 18, the Trios match goes 15, and the Tornado match goes 14, they should be rolling with the main event right around the start of the fourth hour, and that feels about right pacing-wise. We’ll see. To be clear, the show is not dragging by any means, but this looks like a chance to win over East Coast fans with a reasonable time that the main event takes place without ruining their Monday with a lack of sleep.)

(6) THEKLA vs. KRIS STATLANDER – Two-out-of-three-falls match for the AEW Women’s Title

The bell rang 6 minutes into the hour. Thekla got a leverage pin with her hand on the bottom rope at 5:00 to win the first fall. (This is one of those stupid early falls in a Best of Three falls match since there’s no way if it was one fall, it would have ended that soon, but there was nothing about it being a Best of Three fall that made that pinfall more likely.)

Thekla did her crab crawl thing at 9:00, but Statlander recovered and blocked a spear and took over. That’s a bad look for Thekla. Stat’s comeback got no heat. The crowd did start to show some fatigue after being hot for Swerve-Brody.

They stood mid-ring and exchanged strikes at 13:00. Thekla countered a Statlander tornado style move into a body wrap of sorts. Stat leveraged Thekla into a Staturday Night Fever to even the score 1-1. That’s another finish that just didn’t feel like it would have been the end of a regular match, but was anti-climactic and sudden merely because they had another fall to end with something more conventional. That’s less of a big deal, than the quick first falls, but it’s still less than idea.

There was a ref bump very early in the third fall. Thekla kicked the ref and then took off his belt and strutted around ringside and then tried to use it as a weapon. Statlander blocked the swing and took the belt and whipped Thekla with it over and over. Statlander landed another Staturday Night Fever. The fans counted the cover, but the ref was still down. Skye Blue and Julia Hart ran out and went after Statlander. Stat fended them off with the ref’s belt. The ref got in the ring and yanked the belt away from Stat. He was angry with Stat, assuming she took it from him. Thekla speared Stat and landed two stomps for the win.

WINNER: Thekla in 18:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: Okay, that went the length I thought it should. That’s good. Stat lost only after interference from Hart and Blue, so not a clean win, so it was meant to protect Stat. Danielson called it an “unfair” advantage for Thekla. The match itself was fine, but didn’t at all need the three falls stip.)

(7) KYLE FLETCHER & MARK DAVIS & KAZUCHIKA OKADA vs. JET SPEED (“Speedball” Mike Bailey & Kevin Night) & MISTICO – AEW Trios Title match
